I found this book intriguing, suspenseful and it grabbed my attention immediately. Some scenes had me spinning while others just gave a deeper understanding of the character's trauma. I would recommend this page turner and look forward to the next by this author.

Strengths:

This book was sent in by the Author herself directly for a fair and honest review both here and also on Reading in Bed and is certainly recommended for those who like their books in the genre off young adult, new adult, romance, and paranormal.

While I am not the target market for this book, the book is well told talking about Grace and Beau who met at college and well… I won’t go any further there apart from just encourage you to read the book if this is your genre.
It’s not mine I have to be honest as I am too old for this and don’t really read books like this, but the book is well told, and the book is structured good and I felt was paced enough to ensure the four hundred pages flowed quickly enough.

Of course the twist with Beau I saw coming a mile off without giving any spoilers, but sometimes I think when you are reading books like this it is too be expected as Grace has lots of her secrets too and the crunch in this book which I guess will happen in Book 2 are the two characters are able to work their way through the secrets they both hold?

Weaknesses:

Yeah, there was a segment in the book at the two thirds stage where the viewpoint went in-between Grace and Beau which I felt came way too sharply and lost my attention for the pages it did it.

Also, the twist at the end I felt ensured the book was finished off way too sharply for me and it annoyed me enough as I don’t mind too books leaving you on a cliff hanger. I’ve reviewed two for Reading in Bed last year which did this, one of which almost had one throwing the book at the wall. This didn’t have the same impact I have to be honest, I didn’t think it was as good as that I have to be honest and whether I will read any of the sequels I am not sure yet, but whether that I am part of the one target audience is perhaps a better answer.

Do you know the feeling when you pick up a new book and wonder whether you will enjoy it or not? That feeling of "how far will I delve into this before making a reading decision either consciously or unconsciously?" Well, I read the preface, it gripped me between the eyeballs and I was there. I was Grace. Even though I am a male reader I was this female, sharing her emotions, feelings, dreams, nightmares and her craving for a certain male.

The fact that this skilled author has written the book in first person amplifies that feeling that you are in the book, what is happening to Grace is happening to you and, at one point, I physically shivered to move some (indescribable due to no-spoilers) beings away from my skin. Yes she has ups and downs and it's a roller coaster ride, mentally, so hang on tight because you are taking the ride with her.

It is a testament to this book and to the author, that before finishing book one I was already looking to make sure there was a follow-up, in readiness.

Well done Billie Jade for taking me to a different place outside of my own world, giving me a different gender (on the page only) and immersing me in a world of escapism.

A five star review without hesitation and a worry that six stars is not allowed.
Can't stop. Just downloaded Ascend which is book two in the Shadowed Veil Series and will then probably start nagging the author for book three

Amazing!!

I listened to the audio version of this book. It’s a YA . . . You could fill in the blank with so many different descriptions. The story is dark with ghosts, demonic spirits, gory descriptions, and more. But at the heart of it is a charming romance between two teenagers—Grace, a nice girl, and Beau, the hot new student at the college.

The vibe is a combination of creepy at times, scary to the point of hair-raising at others, and peppered with sweet moments as Grace and Beau fall in love. Grace is the girl next door type, still struggling with her father's death and plagued by disturbing dreams. While Beau is the super-hot boy, oblivious to the effect he has on women and gifted with the ability to communicate with the dead. Beau’s ability is more curse than gif, however, and prevents him from getting close to people. While Grace undervalues herself, convinced a happily-ever-after is not for her.

The romance between these two young people is lovely and all-encompassing. It was a joy to read. But with Beau’s paranormal abilities comes a very dark side, and not everyone is happy he can intervene in the other world. As the young lovers grow closer, this darkness pursues them, and Grace becomes a pawn to get to Beau.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book—it was equal parts sweet and scary. Plus, the narrator did a fantastic job! Enjoy!

romance, dangGrace had been lost in despair since her father's death. Happiness something so far beyond her reach she no longer recalls how it fells. That was until Beau came into her life, this beautiful stranger captured her heart from the moment she first laid eyes on him, he had a way of easing her pain, but little did she know that whilst his love completed her, it was also the most dangerous thing in the world. Plagued by nightmares that follow her to the waking world she discovers a horrifying truth, and Beau may have some answers, but she fears to tell him would be to lose the one good thing in her life.

Dark and haunting Awoken by Billie Jade Kermack is a combination of paranormal romance and thriller as you are whisked into a world a ghosts, danger, and serial killers. I loved the chemistry between Beau and Grace, there was a sweetness to their every interaction that really made you root for them. Both are broken, but perhaps together they can become whole again. smoothly written, well paced and enjoyable this plot filled with romance, danger, and terror will keep you engaged from beginning to end, and leave you wanting that next book.er, and terror

Review - Awoken - Billie-Jade Kermack
Wow, just wow. I picked up this book and the blurb sounded interesting, but I wasn’t prepared for how much I would love this book!
The author is a talented person who writes beautifully. I cannot wait to read the rest of this series.
I found the story so descriptive and intriguing, this book had me hooked! I am an author myself with four jobs, and my writing to contend with. It usually takes me a month to read a book, but I couldn’t put this book down. I loved how I could relate to many common sayings and places. I felt the emotions on the MC journey, I smiled, my eyes filled with wet stuff and I laughed too. My reading pace quickened while reading any scary parts, I felt like I was there in a scene. This author has done a great job, I will be buying more of her books. I am going to buy the next book today!
I would say this book has something for everyone, from horror to love and everyday life. Supernatural and emotional storylines both wonderfully mashed together. If you are wondering whether you should buy this book, the answer is yes.

Grace is girl who has been through a lot. She's already seemingly the kind of girl I feel like I wouldn't have to worry about if all hell breaks loose. She goes out with her boots on and keeps confident, despite her passive aggressive friend, Amelia. We probably all have an annoying Amelia in our life and the imagery is captured perfectly in this book! Awoken has ghosts, magic, and romance. Billie Jade Kermack beautifully describes Grace's time in school and her experience with the new dashing student, Beau, in a way that made me feel like a teenager again. Beau is a mysterious young man who opens Grace up to a new world she never considered before. Together they fight off an evil spirit who has first been plaguing Beau's adopted mom and now Grace. I couldn't put the book down and now I'm ready for the next one! If you are reading this, you MUST read this series! I can see it easily getting picked up for a successful show one day! It's not cheesy or ridiculous like a bunch of other mystical type of books that have become popular and overrated. It is straight to the point!

I discovered Awoken: Shadowed Veil Series, by Billie Jade Kermack, from a friend group and decided to take a chance on it even though it is not my normal genre. The synopsis sounded interesting and I sampled the audible version and liked the sound of the narrator.

I enjoyed the storyline as Kermack adds her own flavor to a concept close to M. Night Shyamalan’s The Sixth Sense. Kermack also invests a lot of time creating her characters, especially Beau and protagonist Grace, two college-aged lovers who take a wild journey together. As a reader I need that connection in order for a story to work for me. I got to know and like them. As a side note, Kermack uses a tremendous number of both adjectives and detailed, lengthy explanation of just about everything. It was far too much for my particular taste, and she also overused a few words. Besides those few things, it was a great read.

Finally, the narrator Heather Vicky Walker, does an amazing job. One of the best I’ve heard in quite a while… and I read a lot of audiobooks.

Grace O'Callaghan suffered horrendous and frightening nightmares, the same reoccurring dream of the night her father died. She met Beau and was instantly attracted to him, hook line and sinker, but after finding out some fascinating facts about him, his final explosive reveal made it all start to make sense.
This romantic but suspenseful thriller draws you into a journey of life after death where the divide between good and evil still exists. An exciting and creative plot draws you into every scene, your imagination and subsequently your minds eye working overtime. The author skillfully uses graphic descriptions that make you feel the emotion and physical torment experienced by the characters. Great read, well written and a great curve ball thrown in at the end enticing you to follow onto the 2nd book of the series.

Where do I start lol but not give away to much , pretty much Beau can speak with the dead and that alone is extremely creepy 😳 like if this was a movie I wouldn't be able to watch it lol but omgsh Beau is so dreamy. Definitely gives me sixth sense feels but way better as you have a hot Beau that makes it all better 😉

Grace and Beau are attending college and Grace finds out Beau deep dark secret about being able to speak with the dead. Grace is tortured by dreams of her father's untimely death, the details are superb🙌
There is so much going on but in a goodway, like Beau reveals that he has spoken to Grace's father and I swear I almost cried.

One of my favorite quotes:

✨️"One thing I was sure of though, a kiss like that meant forever "✨️

Well done 🙌
I'm looking forward to book 2 !

Wow - what a ride that story was! I went through all emotions! I loved the Naivety that Grace shows at the start -adding more intensity and shock factor when her fixed opinions about the paranormal are blown away. Beau’s character is fascinating. He is able to communicate with the dead and didn't much like people until he walked back int Grace's life. Grace keeps having nightmares about her Father’s Death - about the timing and that she had accepted that maybe she just wasn't destined for a happily ever after.
Fate however the deeper Grace goes into into
Beau's world she is Plagued by the spirit of a sadistic serial killer that she has to defeat.
This dark and compelling story makes you think about a world plagued by evil and the price paid to save the soul of a loved one.

A thrilling, scary but raw love story - can’t wait to read the rest! Highly recommended

I found this book very slow going. It honestly took me about 5 chapters just to realize that it took place in the UK and not the US. It seemed that the term " My inner Bitch" was used too much with in the first half of the book. I couldn't help but roll my eyes the first 5 times it was used. I also felt that I didn't understand how we went from one thought to another from time to time. Maybe it was because this was the first book I read by this author or maybe it was how it was written. Now let me tell you that when the story got good it got really good. I couldn't finish it fast enough and then I was upset when it was done. Billie kept the suspense to the last page. I must read the next two now.

This author is extremely talented. The ebs and flows make you wonder when the other shoe will drop. Her word pictures are so clear it's scary!
The beginning of Awoken had a Twilight feel, but as the story developed it became darker and darker. The connection between the two main characters seemed sweet and pure. As the book went on, and thier relationship bloomed, so did the darkness. This book left me wondering if everything was happening because she did not know she has power in her or if his power was causing the things to happen to her. The final twist left me craving more! I should have purchased the whole set together.

I picked this up because the cover looked interesting and the blurb intrigued me. It took me a little bit to get into the story, but once I was more used to the author’s style, I was hooked on the story unfolding in the pages. I loved Grace, loved the way she came to life on the page. I adored the world built around her and Beau, and there were parts when I was itching to know more. I will be reading the next book in the series, because that ending begged for me to continue on with the story. I have so many feelings about Beau and Grace and I’m hoping for the outcome I want. Overall, a good book!

My personal opinion; While there are many good reviews, I DNF this book because I feel like the concept is cool, but I just was not hooked in the slightest. I got to page 37 in four days, so I was just not interested in reading more to wait for the plot to be good. I had sort of felt like it was a school paper trying to meet the word count? Obviously it sounds like the plot is good more towards the end of the book, but I don’t want to have to wade through 300+ pages just for the last part of the book to be good.

I must say, the first thing that strikes me from this book is the compelling narrative. So passionate and rich! Nothing short from the work of big name authors like Stephen King.
Our MC, Grace, is a phycologically multileveled young lady, fighting in a world completely turned against her, as she confronts her own demons as well.
If you like a novel that completely absorbs into the storyline, as done with Billie Jade Kermack's exquisite and captivating narrative voice, then this paranormal series kickstarter book, AWOKEN, is for you!

The first of a paranormal trilogy.
This book has a great spooky paranormal vibe embedded in the lives of the young main characters. The characters have a sweet budding romance that is thwarted by the problems they both face due to the paranormal interactions in their lives that they must find a way to face together.
WARNING: ends in a cliffhanger
