Both of Rebekah Meier's books on Fabric Art Collage have been excellent. There are numerous techniques and tips for me to try, very well laid out. This is one of my first craft books in the Kindle/iPad format, and I really like it. When I really want to see the detail of a piece of art, I have the option of expanding the photo on my screen, and looking more deeply at those details.
I've seen several reviews of the first of Meier's books complaining about the amount of supplies one would have to have to do the projects. Even though I'm not a collage artist, I wonder if I should be embarrassed to admit that I already own most of the supplies Meier lists. In this second book, Meier seems to point out repeatedly that the supplies she used for any given project are a suggestion and a hint of what works for her, but you are encouraged to alter a project, and make it your own. I didn't not find her suggested supplies unreasonable in the least - more of a relief that I might have new ways to use all the things I keep accumulating!1
Very worthwhile book. Choose a project, double check your supplies, make a Plan B just in case, and enjoy.
Edited to add: As much as I love reading on a Kindle, and as much as I appreciate the ability to enlarge photos on the iPad to see a project in more detail... when it comes to art and craft books, I need paper copies. So even though I have the Kindle version of this book, I've since purchased the paper, as well. I might just go out and have the spine cut off, and have the book done in a spiral binding so it's easier to keep open to a project.
More Fabric Art Collage penned by Rebekah Meier. She does an outstanding job exposing her readers to an assortment of mixed media techniques for art journaling. I enjoyed her writing style. Her instructions are clear and to the point. I appreciate the way she demystifies art of using fabric and paper in journaling. Her explanations are concise and encourages her readers to be bold, to experiment, and to enjoy applying the different art techniques she discussed.
I'd really give this one more of a 4 1/2 star rating -- it's even more complete and engaging, full of new ideas and techniques, than the first one in this set of books. Excellent ideas, great presentation.
Most of this is fabric art and not of interest to me but there is good information on creating a batting fabric with texture, painting and making fabric rubbings, dying fabric with RIT dye that is of interest to me.
