Drug addiction. Criminal behaviour. Murder... and all before his sixteenth birthday. From foster home to children's home to living rough on the streets, Cain never had a normal childhood. By the age of 8 he was carrying a knife. Seven years later he was serving time for killing someone. Based on real events, ex-prison officer Ronnie Thompson tells Cain's shocking story and reveals what really happens to teenage offenders both on the streets and once they're behind bars. Prison riots, assaults on officers, roof-top protests and brutal acts of violence - this is an inside account of life in a young offender's institute and of an angry young man spiralling dangerously out of control.
A really interesting and graphic read from Ronnie Thompson about life in a young offenders institution and the dramatic events that led up to that point. Very gripping.
Loved this book. A fantastic story that had me gripped from the start. The realness is fascinating and captures some of the youth of today, unfortunate but true. Prompts me to think about what can be done differently to support young people in the current social world.
Amazing book, it's shocking to know what life is really like for all the people out there that aren't as fortunate as us. Love the writing style and the ending was perfection. Thompson's way of writing and showing what really happened is amazing and sent me round a roller coaster of emotions. Again I love this book and would recommend it to anyone, especially if you have an interest about life on the inside. I hope anyone with experiences like Cain have an amazing life that they are happy about.
It is a brutal read. Totally takes you in from the first page. Real criminals, teenagers out doing random things that they think makes them look big and tough. Fostering, real scenarios, its all an amazing read. A classic and sad ending. Ronnie Thompson is an epic writer of 2011 and beyond. Very few writers write like that :)
Decent enough youth crime book and I enjoyed it in the main but a couple of spelling mistakes/typos near the start should have been picked up by the publisher.
