This author has done what many other seem incapable of doing: creating characters that jump into your heart and stay there. Jake is your typical hero with a wounded past, yet that doesn't make him an aloof jerk. He's instantly likeable. And Emily is a ray of pure sunshine without being too syrupy sweet or annoying. And beneath that sunny exterior is another person in need of true love. It's not only the main characters that will appeal to readers, though. Even the secondary characters, like Emily's sister Kate, are ones you feel you know by the end of the book.

This historical romance was well researched, and the details woven into the background of the story so well that they never detracted from the romance. This book was a lovely look into the frontier life of Montana at the end of the 1800's.

The author's writing style was very pleasant and easy to read. It was not one of those books where you have to struggle to understand what the writer is trying to say. And it was full of laugh-out-loud moments, as well as the ones that touched your heart. This was a story to give you the "warm fuzzies" when you're finished reading it, yet at the same time, it's not a light piece of fluff. The struggles and fears of the characters are deeply felt by the reader.

It just goes to show that you can create an enjoyable book without having to stuff it full of gunfights and danger and villains and other such things. There is no mystery in this story, no villain dealing death hiding around the next corner. And this novel doesn't need it. This is a book about the hopes, fears, and struggles of the human heart, and if that's the kind of story you're looking for, then this is a book for you.

Very enjoyable, quick read. Probably not wholly memorable, but I liked it a great deal.

I like this author's writing style. The characters not act stupidly, they're very likeable, and their interactions are fun. Yet there is enough tension to the plot to keep it interesting.

Ok so I really liked this one and kinda can't decide it this one or the first one is the better of the two. I did find the epilogue to be well... a big jump.

A good historical romance story, starting in Philadelphia in 1899 and continuing in Montana with Emily Bright setting off on her own traveling to Montana to claim homestead acres from the government. After settling her claim, a shaggy bear of a man, Jacob Sullivan, appears at her claim and informs her that she is trespassing and the claim is his. As the story unfolds they enter into an agreement that leads to emotions of friendship, admiration, passion, and finally love. I liked the characters and the interaction of Emily and Jake. A nice story and a good read.

It took long enough....

Liked the characters in this storyline, lots of dialogue and a little bickering, but Jake and Emily have chemistry, had me laughing at times. Good love story with some steamy scenes.

This is the second book in a three-part series (see below). In this story, Jake Sullivan (hero) is a very complicated man. Two years ago, he lost his first wife; they lived on Montana land Jake was trying to claim. Jake abandoned his claim and drank heavily. When he comes back, he finds a woman in his house.

Emily Bright has always lived by the largesse of her sisters; she wants to be independent. She ran away from Philadelphia, telling her sister Kate that she was going to visit her other sister, Anthea in Colorado. Now, Emily has sunk most of her money in this patch of homesteading land in Montana. When Jake returns to lay claim to the land, he and Emily argue.

Finally, he decides to wait Emily out; she seems too tiny and Eastern to be able to handle the hardships for very long. Kate sends a letter to Emily saying she was coming for a visit to check on Emily’s idyllic life. She also wants to meet Emily’s husband.

Caught in her own lies, Emily promises Jake that she will abandon the land if he will pretend that they are married until Kate leaves. Reluctantly, Jake agrees.

Big thumbs up to Ms Susan Kay Law for giving me the exact story I was in the mood for last night. One of my favorite tropes is the living-under-the-same-roof trope and this worked out beautifully here:) Jake was a dude in need of some emotional nursing and Emily was the perfect woman to do it. I was really surprised by the non-cowboy, non-farmer western theme here. I loved that these two lived in the world and time they lived in because it worked beautifully. It took me a while to adjust to the fact that it wasn't too historical, when westerns are usually all about the war and/or the scary frontier, this one added other more 'modern' elements in... not every man in that time was a cowboy or gunslinger so it's nice to see an alternative:)

I will definitely be on the look out for more of her books especially from this series.

I really enjoyed this Western set in Montana, I'm surprised about the mixed reviews. I thought this was better than the 1st in the series. Young miss travels to Montana, naively thinking settling on a homestead will be easy. How wrong she is - particularly when she finds out the land she's decided on is already taken - by a cranky, cantankerous man who refuses to budge. They put up with each other, she in the tiny shack he's built and he in a tent. Little by little they begin to warm up to each other and when her big sister comes for a visit, thinking she's married him they have to pretend they really are married. He dresses himself up, shaves and acts polite and voila! A new man - a what a looker! I really liked this one and found both heroine delightfully optimistic and refreshing!

This book was very cute and I loved both hero and heroine. I'm not going to get into too many details but here is a list of things that this book deals with in case you like them (from what I can remember, because I read it a long time ago):

Hero and heroine don't know each other.
Hero was married - spouse died.
Heroine strikes out on her own.
Hero and heroine bicker with each other and are at odds (cute/funny irritation).
Heroine wins hero's trust.
Heroine is bright, clever, cheerful and determined.
Hero is brooding, gruff and purposely rude in the beginning but changes.
There's a child involved.
Hero and heroine were both sold the same property.
Story is set in the late 1800s/early 1900s in the (mid?)west.

Montana in the 1800's. Not what I usually read, but this was actually quite good. I usually like a bit of adventure and suspense, but this is just a sweet story.

Read Gemma's review. It is perfect and describes the book exactly like I wish I could! lol

Nice feel good historical romance set 1899 Western USA. A little racier than seems historically likely, but overall an unexceptional inoffensive quick read. (Except for the epilogue which was stupid and annoying).
