Hello! I am a writer of things Dark, Strange, and Queer. I currently live with his partner of eleven years in Illinois with a menagerie of animal children, including a Siberian husky, miniature dachshund, African grey parrot, Quaker parrot, and suspiciously immortal cat. I love creating art, nerding out over science, video games, tabletop RPGs, and spending hours in the kitchen crafting up delectable vegan grub.

More, please! This book has a quick formula for core needs and character arcs at the start, but don’t stop there and miss the insights and case studies the author has compiled within. Writers and editors will see the value in testing their stories with Story Hypothesis.

The voice and style of this author made the lessons easy to digest. They covered theme and human needs, and showed how and what to question about scenes that aren’t working within the story we’re telling. Story Hypothesis will help me make choices that resonate with readers.

If you’re ready to test your character development ideas, or to craft stronger scenes that show the growth of your characters, I recommend this book. If you’re an editor who wants to talk with clients about Story Hypothesis, I recommend this book that covers fundamental human needs for any genre.

Great book not only for new authors but experienced ones as well. Part theory is one side and how to implement is the other. Lots of contemplative thoughts on how I approach my writing process on how I could improve. Highly recommend.

Part methodology, part exploration, The Story Hypothesis is an accessible and fascinating approach to creating and embedding theme within our fiction.

JP’s writes like he’s he speaking directly to the reader, which works really well for what could easily have been an academic text.

Working through the steps of human needs as identified by Mandred Max-Neef, and with a fantastic variety of examples to draw from, this book will challenge and build on what you thought you knew about theme. Wonderfully thought provoking.

I think this is a good study of Manfred Max-Neef's Fundamental Human Needs as it relates to storytelling. If you don't think Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs fits very well, try this book.
