The bored and snobbish Marquess of Kingston-King to his friends-doesn't believe in witches. Granted, he was cursed by a witch when he was thirteen, but King doesn't believe in curses either. So surely it must be an aftereffect of too much drink and debauchery when, on the eve of his thirtieth birthday, the witch from his youth reappears to watch her curse on him take effect. And, whether King believes it or not, the next morning he's gone from nobleman to nobody, a man without a title or farthing to his name.
It seems curses, and witches, are real after all.
Violet Baker has had enough of entitled aristocrats slumming it in Seven Dials and causing trouble in her family's tavern. She has two younger brothers to support, and she can't when her establishment is destroyed by raucous young bucks. The morning after the Marquess of Kingston's brawling leaves her tavern in ruins, Violet confronts him and demands payment for the damages. But, surprisingly, King is in more trouble than she at the moment. He convinces her he'll pay if she gives him a place to hide from his creditors-only for a day or two-until he sorts out the muddle his life has become.
Violet needs the money King owes and figures she can put up with anything and anyone for a couple of days. She soon realizes her mistake. King is spoiled, lazy, and reckless. His thoughtless behavior puts Vi and her brothers in danger from the neighborhood gang and its leader, Ferryman. But to her surprise, King reacts by vowing to protect her. As together they fight the mounting forces against them, Vi struggles to resist her growing feelings for King. They say a leopard can't change his spots, but can a spoiled marquess change his ways?
And if he does, will it be too late to save the family and the plucky tavern owner he's come to love?

Should I read in order?
This is the first of Galen’s Misfortunes Favorites series.

Basic plot:
On his thirtieth birthday, King loses everything. When his creditors come calling, he finds one person there for money from him willing to hide him until he pays her back.

Give this a try if you want:
- Regency – 1814
- London setting – Seven Dials
- heroine is the proprietress of The Silver Unicorn (alehouse)
- riches to rags – hero loses his title
- children in the story – Vi has two younger brothers, 13 and 6 (?)
- curse to overcome
- dare I say ‘ugly duckling’ hero vibes? This hero is a bit self centered and spoiled...perhaps a bit of an idiot – and this book shows his turn around
- villain to overcome
- interesting author notes!
- medium steam – 3 scenes but one is at the very end

Ages:
- Hero is 30, heroine is 21

First line:
Witches scared him.

My thoughts:
The King and Vi starts with a troublemaker hero that desperately wanted attention and ended up being expelled from a number of prep schools. These leads to him eventually going too far in a dare and getting cursed, along with his 2 friends. King loses everything and finds himself facing Vi, whose tavern he assisted in wrecking the night before, demanding her share of his money to right his wrongs. They work out a bit of a bargain where she will house/hide him while he gets his affairs in order.

This leads to some delicious close proximity between King and Vi, and him bonding with her two younger brothers she also cares for. Now King definitely isn’t someone you are really loving in the beginning. He’s a bit lazy, self centered, and doesn’t really think of long term repercussions. And one of my small issues with the story was it was a good 40% before I felt like he started to turn around into someone I didn’t want to kick.

This story really has a lot that is not really my jam in romance. I don’t love children being main characters, and these two get lots of page time and even tend to invade the steamy scenes because they are worried about them having privacy from them (maybe a bit too close to home in my current phase of life haha). It’s also a plot that revolves around a villain character and just isn’t as focused strictly on the characters and their relationship development like I usually prefer.

But maybe it was the curse (I do love magic elements and curses!), but I ended up enjoying so much about this book. I think this is my first by Galen and I definitely want to try some more by her. I enjoyed her writing a lot – the action/suspenseful scenes I was on the edge of my seat to find out what would happen. I loved her humor. I loved the heart she put into her characters! I think she did such a good job turning around King and I thought it ended up being believable.

I’m left quite curious about King’s friends and fellow curse bearers. I will probably pick up the next in the series as well when it comes out this spring.

A really fun Regency romance! This features a real social class difference: "King" is a marquess, while Violet runs a tavern in Seven Dials (if you're a historical romance reader, you know very well this is the roughest neighborhood in London!). King suffers a MAJOR reversal of fortune (let's just say he won't be a marquess for much longer) and somehow finds himself working for Violet and living in her tavern while he hides from his creditors. Soon enough the forced proximity does its Official Romance Business and Violet and King are making out on the bar (oops!).

We've got some tried-and-true plot (King learns to value the small things in life when he loses his tremendous wealth! Violet is afraid to love again because she's lost so many people in her past!), but also some really refreshing elements: Violet is no blushing virgin, which doesn't inform even the slightest bit of the conflict; King really does act like an entitled aristocrat, but again, the class difference isn't part of the relationship conflict at all. All in all it's a refreshing take on historical romance without feeling like it doesn't understand the genre. Recommended for any HistRom fans!

This objective review is based on a complimentary copy of the novel.

This is my 45th book by Shana Galen. I have been reading her since May 2017 and I consider her one of my favorites. I know I'll always get a good read with her. I also enjoy when a new series comes out.

I loved Violet and King. I loved their personalities and their chemistry. I loved the suspense of this story and since most people read book descriptions I don’t think I’m giving anything away but I loved the story with the curse the witch put on him. Made for a very interesting read. I read so many “ton” books and this wasn’t that at all. It was a great change of pace. I really thought this was a good read.

I had a hard time connecting with the characters, but the storyline was intriguing enough to keep me reading. I have to admit that I've never read a historical romance quite like this one. I liked Violet as a heroine; she was very no-nonsense and protective over her two brothers, fighting everyday for their basic needs. Her momentary peace is disrupted by King and his mates who destroy her tavern and her only means to keep the street gangs away. King was the epitome of an unbothered rakehell when we first met him; he was extremely selfish and dare I say unlikable and he had a lot to make up for in order to redeem himself. Recommend to readers who are looking for a touch of magic in their historical romance🖤

Tropes: forced proximity, class difference, rakehell hero, down-on-her-luck heroine, no-strings attached, witch's curse, slow burn, steamy🔥

Shana Galen has a new series and I'm here for it. I enjoyed King and Vi's story. Vi's was a little closed off but thankfully she realized what she was giving up and changed her mind. And I loved that King changed his ways in here. Watching him lose everything and learn how to live was great.

The start of a new series, it was different – a witch putting a curse on three young lords, now it’s time for them to pay. Wonderful characters, fast paced, sizzling chemistry all made for an engrossing, captivating romance. I loved Vi who was one strong woman, determined to make a success of her family’s inn The Silver Unicorn, she has two adorable brother Georgie & Joshua. I must admit I disliked King to begin with who was self-centred, selfish, a bully, arrogant & a wastrel, I wondered if the author could redeem him & to be honest if I wanted him to be redeemed. I loved how the story progressed & developed & read the book in a couple of sittings. I’m looking forward to the next in the series

This author is one of my favorites and this book was okay for me, but certainly not a new favorite. I applaud the original plot, but I think the curse concept maybe threw me off a bit. King started off as a very selfish, unlikeable hero, but as we got to know him, it became apparent that he just really needed a hug. He had never had anyone to love or care about him and that made me thaw toward him immediately. After that, it was Violet I didn't like. I completely understood why she was trying to protect herself so much, but she took it a bit far and made King feel unlovable, for quite some time I might add. I think the ending felt a bit rushed after a bit of a dramatic buildup and some scenes and dialogues felt a bit out of place or unfinished, especially King's visit to his father. I know some of this is likely intentional because there is a plot thread with the curse that will endure throughout the series, but at least the father visit scene felt off. It also felt odd to have some of the scenes told from the point of view of Violet's thirteen-year-old brother. I'll continue this series at some point, but maybe not right away. Overall, I did really enjoy King's development and redemption, but his growing bond with Violet's younger brothers and the love between them may have shone a bit brighter than the one between him and Violet, so not quite as romantic as it could've been. It also made me a bit sad for King to see him lose so very much, driven to the point of homelessness and I'd really love to see him restored later on in the series, with Violet and her brothers along for the ride.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I have always loved Shana Galen books. Her Survivors series was consistently well written and enjoyable to read. In her books you get flawed heroes and the strong, intelligent women who love them.
The King and Vi continues in this vein. I loved the character of Violet and her practical no nonsense attitude. Her interactions with her brothers and those she cared about in her Seven Dials community allowed her soft spot to emerge. The found family that King adopted after losing everything (title, money, material trappings) empowered him with the ability to evolve from the arrogant, entitled aristo to a real man who can love and be loved.

Good start to a promising series with an interesting premise of redemption and atonement.

Wow weird read

I'm having trouble rating it. I just am not sure I liked it. I liked the characters. I liked the hero and the heroine but it was missing that special something that makes Shane Galen so special. It dragged in a couple of places. The intimate scenes just seemed odd and ill timed. And not very romantic for some reason. And all I kept thinking was gross especially because they didn't really bathe all that often. It just fell short. The heroine was not a virgin, and of course neither was he. Lol. The two boys were really amazing though. The old witch curse was odd but it worked somehow but I hated the ending. I'm not going to spoil anything but I was disappointed. It feels like a cliffhanger actually. But now I have to read the others just to see how it ends.

This was a great story, featuring a Marquess brought low, and a struggling tavern owner just looking for the money she’s owed after said Marquess trashed her establishment. The Marquess of Kingston, known as King, ends up promising to pay Violet Baker what he owes her if he can just hide out at her place until he can sort out his affairs. He ends up becoming involved with Vi and her two little brothers, Joshua and Georgie, realizing that their lives are not easy and they can use help. Vi struggles to keep King at arms length, but he grows on her as he stops being so selfish and lazy and begins assisting the Bakers, although he’s a bit reckless at times. The plucky Violet has been making ends meet, but the neighborhood gang leader is a danger to her and her brothers and has been charging “taxes” that make it harder and harder to stay in business. Oh, and King was cursed by a witch when he and his two best friends stole from her, which comes into play with the wreck his life has become. So not only does he need to find a way to end the curse, but he needs to rebuild his life after his fall from wealth and leisure to having just a few items of clothing to his name. What a mismatched couple, but with the circumstances they’re thrown into, it all works. I loved this romance and how King fell in love with the whole family, which is something he never had after his mother died and his father abandoned him. I’m looking forward to reading the rest of this new series.

Publication Date: 1/24/24
Period: Regency - London
Number of Pages: 312

Once upon a time, there was George Oxley (King), Marquess of Kingston, heir to the Duke of Avebury. For all of his thirteen years, King had craved the love and attention of his father. That, however, would never happen because his father was a self-centered, uncaring, disinterested, selfish man who never gave a thought to anything other than himself. His craving for his father’s attention led him to all sorts of exploits and his friends Henry and Rory were right there with him. That is how they came to the attention of an evil witch – and how they became cursed – and how they lost everything that mattered to them when the curse kicked in on their thirtieth birthdays. Or, did they really lose the important stuff?

On King's thirtieth birthday, he and his friends had a wild celebration and ended the evening in a brawl in The Silver Unicorn, a public house in Seven Dials. The following morning, he was awakened from his stupor by a loud knocking at the door of his bed chamber – and there were other noises in the background. He learns his father has been convicted of treason; King is likely to be stripped of everything as well because his father’s blood taints him; and his creditors are stripping his townhouse of everything that isn’t nailed down – and some stuff that is. He just walks out of the house and leaves them all to it – but – he is stopped by a petite, termagant of a woman who demands he pay her for the damage to her pub. He tells her he has nothing to pay with and somehow ends up going back to the pub with her. How did that happen?

Violet Baker is a pragmatic young woman who has had to learn to be tough to survive in Seven Dials, keep her young brothers safe, and manage her public house. When those drunken sots decided to have a brawl in her place, they didn’t care if they were ruining not only her livelihood but the safety of herself and her brothers. Well, she would just take the bill directly to the mighty Marquess. She couldn’t believe he could not pay the few pounds she demanded he owed her. Humpf, she’d just watch him until he could pay it.

Goodness, I loved Violet and King together. He, who had always craved love, and she, who was afraid of love, seemed an unlikely pair. The chemistry though, is strong and you can feel it radiating off the page. Then, there is Georgie (six) and Joshua (thirteen), they are Violet’s brothers are some of the loveliest characters you’ll ever read. Violet’s jaw drops as she sees how her brothers react to King – and he to them. WOW!

This was a delightful read filled with witches, curses, traitors, loss, loyalty, triumph over evil, and a well-deserved HEA. I didn’t expect to love it because – witches – and spoiled, self-centered, entitled, lazy, rich dude – but – I did love it. Now, I can hardly wait for the next book in the series. Will it be Harry or Rory? Who will have the second clue to counteracting the curse? After all the books are done, will they be so happy they don’t care about breaking the curse? Goodness, we’ll have to wait for the next books to find out.

George Oxley, Marquess of Kingston and heir to the Duke of Avebury, King to his friends, led a charmed life, doing whatever he wanted without a thought for anyone else. But his charmed life comes to a screeching halt on the morning of his thirtieth birthday when a curse put upon him and his two best friends when they were just thirteen takes effect. King didn’t believe in curses or witches, but maybe the curse is real as he has lost everything he held dear – his title, his money, and his position within hours of turning thirty, and now creditors are swarming his house taking his belongings to settle his debts. He is taking in the chaos when a very angry yet lovely young woman demands he pay her for the damages done to her tavern. Seeing an escape from his creditors, he returns to the tavern in Seven Dials with her thinking to hide out until things settle down. But King’s life is about to change in ways that he could have never anticipated, primarily thanks to Violet Baker, the feisty, blue-eyed tavern owner, and her brothers. King soon thinks he may have found what he has always been looking for, but he will have to do something he has never had to do; prove that he is sincere and has really changed.

Violet Baker has not had an easy life, her mother died when she was young, and then her stepmother died, leaving her two young sons in Violet’s care, and then her father died, leaving her alone with two young boys and no means of support other than a rundown tavern in Seven Dials. She is barely making ends meet and works hard to protect her brothers from the dangers of Seven Dials, especially the gang leader known as the Ferryman. But when King and his friends come “slumming” in her tavern and start a riot that leaves her tavern destroyed, she is terrified, that if she can’t pay the Ferryman his “taxes” she will lose everything, including her brothers. So she takes matters into her own hands and tracks down King and demands he pay for the damages he caused, but it soon becomes clear that King is having a worse day than she is, so if he can’t pay, she’ll have to keep him in her sights, never expecting that the pampered nob would find a way to worm into her heart, too bad he isn’t staying, no matter what he says.

What a great start to a new series, I was sucked into this story from the very first page and couldn’t put it down until the very last word. I loved Violet and King, both together and individually, Violet is a strong, resourceful, loving young woman and King starts out as a self-centered aristocrat and ends up as a considerate and caring man and I can’t help but hope that he and his friends will find a way to break the curse. This book has a lot going on yet never feels busy or rushed, instead, it is a delightful story filled with curses, witches, loss, heartbreak, wonderful secondary characters, family, evil villains, second chances, steamyish love scenes, hope and finally a happy ever that didn’t seem possible. I highly recommend this book and will be anxiously awaiting the next book in the series!

I voluntarily read an Advanced Reader Copy of Shana Galen’s The King and Vi and the views expressed are my honest opinions. This is the first book in the new Misfortune’s Favourites series.
At thirteen years of age, King, or rather George Oxley, the Marquess of Kingston, had been expelled from nearly every prestigious school he had been enrolled in. He feared nothing and no one, except one thing – witches. When one dark, wet night, someone dared his friends Rory, Henry, and himself to steal whiskey from a perceived witch, he regretted agreeing to such dare as the boys ended being cursed once they turned thirty. Henry, Rory and King believed they had gotten away with it. Until funnily enough, King loses everything on his thirtieth birthday when his estranged father the Duke of Avebury is incarcerated for treason. With King’s creditors descending en masse to grab what every material things they could, he believes he could hide at the tavern of a shabbily dressed pretty woman who accused King of damaging her tavern. Little does King know that this experience would change his life.
Despite his handsome face, Violet Baker does not think much of King. He is the epitome of the spoiled rich nobleman who descends upon Seven Dials to cause trouble. With to younger brothers, Joshua and Georgie, and a couple of employees depending upon her, Violet could not afford to keep the tavern closed. With King unable to pay, the only option left is to have him work in The Silver Unicorn until everyone was back on his feet. Soon, Violet realises that King is lazy, spoiled and more trouble than he was worth, especially when he recklessly endangers them by putting them more prominently in arch rogue Ferryman’s path. With a fine between hate and love, will the constant bickering between King and Vi lead to even more destruction or will they realise that they are stronger together?
Due to some personal issues, it took me longer than expected to finish the book, especially since I used to get mixed up in the characters of this new series. However, slow and steady wins the race and once I got everyone straightened out, I really enjoyed reading the book. I must commend Ms. Galen for the originality of coming up with a hero who tends to need saving initially. Joshua’s side story and Georgie’s little snippets of conversation are very important to the book. I highly recommend you delve into the world of the Misfortune’s Favourites to know more.

The Marquess of Kingston – King to his friends – has never wanted for anything. Except maybe the attentions of his father. Instead, he has spent his childhood in boarding school after boarding school, oftentimes getting into as much trouble as a young boy can. On one particular adventure, he’s tasked with stealing a cask of whiskey from an alleged witch. But during his dare, he’s caught and cursed by the witch. King thinks nothing of it…until his thirtieth birthday when his world falls apart.

But in the middle of his downfall, he finds hope in the form of Violet Baker, a tavern owner from the slums of London, and someone he now owes a lot of money to. Since he has fallen from society, the only way to make it up to her is to work for her. But King hasn’t worked a day in his life, let alone manual labor in the worst parts of town. However, as he works beside Violet he finds more to life than just money and societal standing. But will the curse leave him alone and let him find peace? Or will he have to contend with fate herself to save the promise of a new life?

An image of the book cover for The King and Vi

The King and Vi is a fast-paced historical romance. As such, I found it difficult to form any connection with the characters. There were bits and pieces of them that were enjoyable but nothing about them drew me into the story. The plot was intriguing and that’s what kept me reading. It isn’t often that you read a book where the male lead is brought low and must find his way. Too many times we read those Cinderella-esque stories about lowly women falling in love with a prince to have their world changed.

Aside from the characters, there were some issues I had with the timing of things towards the end of the book. It almost felt as if the ending was rushed and the author was simply trying to meet a deadline. Also, the dialogue seemed amateur and disconnected to some of the scenes. It didn’t flow quite right and was a little disconcerting to read. However, it was a light and quick read and if you’re looking for a book to whet your palette, then this would be a perfect choice

This was such a good book. I've only read Lord and Lady Spy by Shana Galen before and I wasn't sure about this paranormal romance with curses and magic, but boy, I have loved it.

When he was thirteen years old, King stole from the witch who cursed him and the two of his friends. Now at age 30, the witch is back and gleefully awaits his punishment. And the curse works: King loses his house, his title, and his wealth, and his estranged father is accused of treason. He has nowhere to go while everyone invades his house to reclaim the money he owes them.

One of the people is Violet, the owner of the tavern King destroyed the evening prior. He not only started a fight, but in the battle, her employee was hurt, and her supplies and furniture were destroyed. oh, and she has two little brothers to take care of, whi;e the gang leader demands taxes as well. King, hoping to escape everyone, goes with her.

Boy, I loved the chemistry between Vi and King. He was lazy, demanding, whining, and thought himself better than everyone else, and I LOVED his transformation into a caring, dependable man who was willing to risk his life to keep Violet and the boys safe. Violet was resourceful, witty, intelligent, and hardworking and I loved how much she bossed King around. He needed to humble himself before her and boy, did he deliver.

And the amazing nickname he had for her too!! So good!

While the witch and her sister weren't as prevalent in the book as I hoped for, I liked it. And the witch's sister was a surprise too, one that I hope will be continued in the sequel. I hope we get to see the sequel again from King and Violet's perspective (somehow, I don't think I can read Rory's story and not cry), especially because he was the one who received the note (though maybe his friends received next parts as well? Who knows?) and I would love to see more adventures from King and Violet's perspective.

Joshua and Georgie were so cute too! They are precious and I love them.

I cannot wait to read the sequels, I know they will be amazing as well.

The King and Vi by Shana Galen is the story of three little boys (13) who were all destined to become dukes. One of them, a trickster who had already been dismissed from all of the boys’ schools in England, decided they should steal the witch’s whiskey. It didn’t go well and she placed a curse on them to come to fulfillment on their thirtieth birthdays. It left their minds until the Marquess of Kingston’s thirtieth birthday, well a little later really as he was too hungover to deal with anything more than the immediate. As he thought about it, one of his friends had lost his wife and child on his birthday. He realized this was his thirtieth birthday and is estranged father had just been found guilty of treason and all his assets seized, including King’s. It also turned out that last night he and his friends had destroyed a tavern and the owner was amongst those trying to seek retribution before it was too late. She was not going to let up.

King turned out to be a regular guy, much to his own surprise, once the veil of nobility was lifted. He had assumed he would have children some day, but didn’t plan to have much to do with them, but he liked Vi’s brothers, Joshua and Georgie. In fact, he liked a lot of people he was meeting in Seven Dials, about as far from his former life as one could get. When he discovered there was a neighborhood bully demanding “taxes” be paid him, he lost all sense of nobility and decided to fight. Vi thought he was crazy. She had lived this way all her life and she was used to it. They were both fabulous characters as were the brothers, the younger of which, Georgie, called King, “Pa,’” and he liked it. He was not a warrior but he had studied strategy and he thought they could win. It was a wonderful story. I especially liked when the others on the street clapped as the Bow Street Runners hauled the bully away. Thanks Shana Galen for a rousing good book!

"The King and Vi”, the first novel in the new series “Misfortunes Favorites” by Shana Galen, concerns the Marquess de Kingston, “King”, who, at the age of 13, found himself cursed by a witch when caught misbehaving with two of his friends. The curse, which took effect on his 30th birthday, left him homeless, broke, in serious debt, and stripped of his title due to his father's arrest for treason. Never having known anything but a life of privilege and without responsibility, he spent his time doing as he pleased, including destroying a local tavern after a night of serious drinking with his friends.
Violet Baker grew up in poverty.  Her family ran a public house in Seven Dials, the worst part of London. Vi, who was now raising her two younger brothers by herself, could not afford the repairs to her tavern after King and his friends damaged it.  She tracked him down and demanded payment for the repairs. He promised to pay her if she allowed him to from all of his creditors at her place for a couple of days. Would she have agreed so quickly if she had had an idea of what was to come?
The character of Violet is a strong, independent women, typical of Shana Galen's main characters. She knows what needs to be done in order to take care of her brothers and her business, and she does it. Taking in a complete stranger of questionable character seemed a bit out of a stretch for her, but she felt she had no choice. King, on the other hand, is very atypical of the usual Shana Galen hero. He is rude, spoiled, selfish and a troublemaker, but the changes that come seem to happen almost too quickly to be believed.
Ms. Galen's attention to the historical details, and the well written, intriguing plot make this a great opening act for this new series. I imagine we'll see King’s two reputable friends as the stars of the books to come. Bring ‘em on! I also hope that we’ll have a revisit to Violet and her lovable brothers in future installments!
I voluntarily read an ARC of this book and the opinions expressed are my own.

This is the first book of a new series, Misfortunes Favorites, and it is off to a great start! This is a fun story featuring witches, curses, and differences in social classes. George, who is the Marquess of Kingston, known as "King" to his friends, leads a life filled with selfishness and debauchery. Despite being cursed by a witch when younger, he doesn't believe in them, until the witch from his youth appears again the night before his thirtieth birthday to witness the curse take effect. The next morning, King finds himself with no title or wealth, basically a nobody. Violet runs her family's tavern and is tired of entitled young aristocrats coming in and destroying her tavern, all in the name of a good time. When King leaves her tavern in a mess, she goes looking for him the next day to make him pay for all the damage. But she's caught him at a bad time, because now since the curse has taken place, he doesn't have a farthing to his name. He convinces her that if she lets him hide out with her while he sorts out his affairs, that he will pay his debt to her. It doesn't take long for her to realize, though, that he's more trouble than he's worth. But as he starts to help out more and become less lazy and selfish, he eventually starts to grow on her, and King also starts to realize what a hard life Violet and her family lead.
This was a really well-written story about an arrogant, selfish man, brought down to his lowest and evolving into an honest and more compassionate person. The characters were well-crafted and I enjoyed seeing King's growth throughout the story. He and Violet had such great chemistry and I loved how she made him want to be a better person.
If you're looking for a little magic in your Regency, then this is one book you definitely don't want to miss! Looking forward to continuing the series!

The King and Vi @shanagalen is the first book in the Misfortunes Favorites and the beginning of an amazing adventure.

A childish prank ...
Three friends cursed...
A witch seeking revenge
Spicy ☕🔥🔥🔥

The Marquess of Kingston or "King" to his peers has discovered his life is about to change, and not for the better.

Violet Baker must repair the damage to her tavern after it was destroyed in a brawl. As it is she's barely surviving while taking care of her family. What will happen when a stranger turns her world upside down?

One decision King made decades ago has turned his world upside down. Is it too late to fix the damage? Who will he be able to trust?

Will Vi let him stay while he tries to fix things?

Both will discover that money can't fix everything, but it will save you from the Ferryman and hopefully keep a roof over your head.

Consequences of King's childhood pranks have caught up to him. Woven with witches and curses the past is now colliding with the present.

The only way to survive is to make amends and make things right. Will he be forgiven, or is it too late?

King never expected was to fall in love. With everything that's happened to him, will he be able to hold onto it before that gets destroyed too?

A whole lot of passion, desire, devotion, love, faith, trust, and redemption in this spicy historical romance.

I can't wait to read the next installment in Shana's new world!

This spicy historical romance is best enjoyed with your favorite iced beverage, a cozy chair, and maybe a fan. Characters comfortably express their desire with kissing and passionate exploration. If you're looking for a medium level of heat this should be a satisfying read.

Thank you Dragonblade Publishing for the advance reader copy for review consideration. All opinions are my own.

King loses everything because his father is a traitor. Violet owns a bar in a bad part of London. When Violet approaches King to repay her for damage he did to her bar, they begin a journey of self-discovery. They have to learn to work together in order to save her bar and protect her brothers from the gang that rules the Seven Dials area. Can they protect the bar and stop the bad guy together or will their differences keep them apart?

This story starts with King as a child pulling a prank. I thought this was a good choice because it showed how onery he was as a child. That onery personality plays a major role in the conclusion to the story. I thought King made a lot of changes very quickly, but the story takes place over a condensed time frame, so the author had to make him change fast. Violet starts the story determined to survive for the sake of her brothers but broken down from living in a dangerous place like Seven Dials. I like how the author allowed Violet to accept King into her world. I liked the addition of Violet's two younger brothers. Their backstory was good and they added to the story instead of bogging it down with cute kid nonsense.

I thought that the conclusion was a bit odd. I am hoping that it gets a little better conclusion in the next book. I was confused by how many people owed King "favors". If he is pushed out of society because of his father then I would think his favors are null and void. The only one I totally understood was when he went to the police because there was something in it for them to listen to him.

This story takes place in London. It is an historical romance. This story includes witches. It is part of a series and I feel strongly the series should be read in order because of the witches. I will read more from this author in the future.

Oh, I just loved this book by one of my favorite authors. Ms Galen writes a spectacular tale of a curse, lost wealth and a love worth finding. The characters were fully developed with thoughts and feelings of their own. It had me at first chapter and never let go.
When George Oxley Marquis of Kingston was thirteen years old, he and some of his friends played a terrible prank on a supposed witch. They didn't really think what would happened to them in the future. The witch put a curse on each telling them it would makes their lives change for the worse.
Only they thought it can't be true and left it at that .
But when Kingston (King to his friends) tuned thirty, his father was imprisoned for treason. He hadn't really gotten along with his sire. Then his creditors began to descend on his doorstep to get money owned to them. They began taking his things and a woman from a tavern is there too with a bill for a torn up inn. Violet Baker owns the Silver Unicorn where King and associates made a mess and demands her money. So what's a man to do but ask a feisty woman to let him hide at her place and he will work off to recompense her for trouble he caused.
King doesn't really know how to do anything but be a titled lord, but he's willing to try.
Lots of adventure with a gang of men trying to extort Violet, and a man who will do his best to keep her from harm. King has never been in love, but he know it's for real. Violet on the other hand, thinks the man really is above her station and couldn't love her. But fate steps in to make it real for both of them. A happy ever after is the key.
I appreciate Net Galley for this ARC title in which I gave an honest review.

Sparks fly when a curse leads to an unlikely alliance between a down-on-his-luck marquess and a tenacious tavern owner.

This is definitely not the same as all the usual historical romances in which two people from different social stations meet and fall in love. The ending was unexpected, but still highly satisfactory.

King was spoiled through and through and he only thought about himself, even after he lost everything and became involved with Violet and her problems. He was so nonchalant about his world falling apart, it was a bit surreal. I liked that it took time for him to change his views and his ways, and he kept some of his arrogance all the way to the end. He was a charming and likeable character, despite his obvious shortcomings, and he kept his promises to Violet and her brothers.

Violet didn’t fall for his charms initially and she didn’t put up with his nonsense either. She was in a truly dismal situation and King’s presence made things worse. But he also shook up their lives and showed them that it was possible for them to have something better.

The curse was an integral and intriguing part of the story, and I would love to see how it affected King’s two friends. Violet’s brothers were so cute and I just loved them and the roles they played.

I can highly recommend this if you like steamy historical romance with class differences and curses.

I requested an ARC of this book, and all opinions are my own.

I am a huge fan of Shana Galen, so I was excited to read this first book in her new series. I'm happy to say that my expectations were exceeded by this fun tale born out of a prank gone horribly wrong.

King, the (former) Marquess of Kingston, and his two best friends - Rory & Henry - run afoul of a witch while at boarding school in Scotland. The witch places a curse on them, saying when they reach the age of 30 they will lose everything they love. The boys, aged 13 at the time, ignore the warning and go on with their lives.

On the day of King's 30 birthday, his father (the Duke) is found guilty of treason, meaning his titles, lands, and those of his heirs, are now forfeit to the Crown, leaving King homeless and penniless. Also that night, King happens to start a tavern brawl, leaving Violet Baker's only home/source of income in shambles. What is a girl to do? Why, make the Marquess pay up - either with coin or manual labor, of course.

The story had elements of one of my favorite films - Overboard, with Goldie Hawn & Kurt Russell - but without the amnesia aspect. It was a joy to see how King learned to accept his new lot, and to care for Vi and her adorable brothers. And what they do to the local thug, Ferryman? Well, that's just fun to imagine.

This was a very enjoyable read, and I look forward to seeing how things play out through the rest of the series as King & the others work to reverse the curse.

*I received a free ARC from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review*

The Kind and Vi is a little bit romance, a little bit redemption story, and a little bit magic. We get to jump right in with the events that led up to the curse placed on King and his friends. From there we know something terrible is going to befall King, but I wondered how exactly he would lose his fortune and title. There is also a quick answer to that question as those events unfold in the next chapter. I really enjoyed following King's story as he went from lazy, selfish aristocrat to part of a real family with Violet and her brothers. Violet is a great heroine - tough enough to stand for herself but not too proud to eventually learn to accept help from others. It's easy to understand why she pushes King away, especially when he expresses his feelings for her. She has had to survive so long pretty much on her own and it's not like aristocrats at that time were known for getting involved with those living in poverty. I really liked the character of Joshua - I'm kind of hoping we might get to see him in a future series. And really, without him who knows if King would have ever tried to convince Violet to trust that he wanted to be with her and her brothers for good. The supernatural element with the witch and her sister set this story apart from other historical romances. I can't wait to see what happens in books 2 and 3 of the series!

The King and Vi is a Regency romance where King is the young son of a marquess accused of colluding with the French, leaving King destitute as his status, money, and home are taken from him. Vi is a tavern owner who is furious at King for being involved in destroying her business the night before and heads to his estate when the debtors have begun to take everything, demanding that he pay to fix her tavern. King goes with Vi back to her tavern and grows attached to her two young brothers and Vi herself, giving him a new home and family as well as a new place in life. Woven in with the romance plot is the Ferryman, a gang leader who wants Vi for himself and Vi’s brother, Joshua, trying to free his friend from the Ferryman’s control.

One of the best parts was King being exposed for being terrible at cleaning and Vi being exasperated at him. I enjoyed a lot of their banter, particularly how unafraid Vi is to call King out.

There are historical depictions of disrespect towards the autonomy of women, forced prostitution and the claiming of young girls as well as conversations around forcing young boys into gangs to pay for debts, so readers sensitive to that kind of content should proceed with caution.

I would recommend this to fans of Regency romance looking for an exploration of the darker aspects of the time period.

Shana Galen has such an addictive, immersive writing that utterly transported me into this story! I could have read this book in one sitting if not for the fact that I needed sleep last night. I’m on such a historical fantasy romance kick so I LOVED the inspiration behind this story (Maleficent’s curse on Aurora and Merriweather’s counter-spell)! The humbling of our male MC King felt genuine in its trajectory. Vi is in her early 20’s with the sole responsibility for keeping her young brothers off the streets by running a tavern that King is responsible for destroying. The forced proximity of King working for Vi was SO GOOD and the tension it built was so fun to read! I also loved the found family dynamics of King with Vi’s brothers Joshua and Georgie - I’m a sucker for men letting down their walls for kids and the cuteness it adds to the forming relationship between our couple. The bond King develops with Joshua and Georgie had me squealing just as much as watching him fall in love with Violet!

I also loved the detachment from ‘proper’ society in this story’s setting! Vi and her family are so far removed from the world King comes from and that is something I’ve not personally read in most historical romances.

I am so excited to read the rest of this trilogy and experience more sides of this “riches-to-rags” story saga!!!

{Thank you so much to the author for reaching out to me to review her newest story and to Netgally for approving my eARC request!}

King and Vi
By Shana Galen

.I’ve been reading historical romance and to a lesser degree paranormal and contemporary for more than 50 years. This is the first romance I can remember that the author brings the reader into the hero and heroines developing relationship. The author allows us to in join them on their journey to their happily ever after And it’s a wonderful journey it goes without saying I loved it. Bravo Shana

My Fair Katie

I fell in love with these characters. I was totally invested in their lives. They came alive for me Shana did a great job with the plot, characters, their relationship and the resolution. Everything about it was believable. I enjoyed it immensely. Well done, Shana

Wonderful conclusion to the trilogy. I enjoyed them all but I think this one outshone the others. The scene with the witch, where she explains all is riveting. Very dramatic. All in all a great read and a splendid series. Bravo, Shana Write a review (optional):

So many of the novels I read follow the Cinderella theme, that it was quite amusing to read the reverse in this romance as a young Marquess is brought down to his bare bones. King and his friends lose what they love most because of a stupid childish prank, but the one thing that stands them in good stead is their background and training. Although King does not have money, he has resilience and the ability to call on people who can give him help when it becomes necessary. Certainly, Vi's brothers taught him about survival in the slums and Vi demonstrated dignity and the value of earning one's keep. Apart from the fallout of the scandal surrounding his family, King discovers that Vi has her own difficulties and vows to keep her safe. His battle plan, whilst effective, did make me laugh out loud especially as the two young boys entered into the fray with gusto. King also discovers that spending so much time in close proximity to the tavern owner breaks down the stony walls of his heart, and as the attraction grows between them so does King's protectiveness towards the small family. The book is a standalone and comes to a delightful conclusion and I looking forward to reading the next in the series to find out how King's friends fare. I received a copy of this romance as a gift through Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.

When a witch curses King and his friends at the age of thirteen, he doesn’t take too much notice. Yet on the eve of turning thirty, the witch reappears to watch her curse take effect, transforming King’s life from the Marquess of Kingston to a nobody, a man without a title or farthing to his name. Suddenly, witches and curses seem very real. The morning after his birthday, he finds himself confronted not only by his creditors but Violet Baker, whose Seven Dials tavern he and his friends destroyed. Vi demands payment for damages but reluctantly agrees to let him stay with them, whilst he finds the funds. When Vi and her brothers find themselves in danger from the neighbourhood gang and its leader, Ferryman, King vows to protect them. Soon, Vi is struggling to resist her feelings for a man she once though snobbish, spoiled and lazy.
A clever reversal of the Cinderella theme with King, down on his luck, realising that money does not bring love. It was delightful to see King grow into a man, worthy of the title, and find love not only from Vi but her two brothers. Vi’s strength and resilience were touching and made her all the more endearing to King. A great start to a series and I look forward to reading about King’s friends and their woes.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
