With tender encouragement and wisdom born from her own personal journey, Tessa Afshar writes a beautifully gentle devotion filled with truths, stories, and vivid messages that will stay with me for a long while. Her heart for the downcast is evident in these pages, as is her gift of stirring hope to life--even in the midst of the dark.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who has walked through anxiety and discouragement. A true treasure.

[Thank you to @moodypublishers for my gifted copy of this title in exchange for an honest review.]

“Your feet never touch a ground not carpeted by God’s grace.”

I absolutely love Tessa Afshar’s writing. I’ve so enjoyed reading Tessa’s fictional works, so I was really thrilled to finally read something nonfiction from her. This devotional is truly beautiful.

Tessa knows what it’s like to live through anxiety and struggle, and she writes openly and honestly, pointing the reader to Christ and the true rest and peace that is found in Him alone. My copy of this book is filled with highlights. In each chapter, Tessa wrote something that I knew I would never want to forget.

I love that this book is filled with pictures that her husband took as well. Stunning!

If you’re looking for a biblical and beautiful devotional that will help you feel seen and encouraged to press on in whatever God has called you, let me recommend this one to you!

Tessa has written a book that speaks life into dark places.
She understands the battle of anxiety and the peace we seek during the exhausting struggle.

She writes that her father had a similar struggle with anxiety and when she shared her story he said “I know, I know”. As I read each new story in this book I felt like Tessa understands my struggle too and is gently saying “I know” in my ear as well. Just knowing someone else truly understands means they can be a guide in the fog.

She states in one devotional “even thought you are going through a diminished season, you can trust God is laying a foundation in that valley for a greater work in your life”. I wholeheartedly agree. Our lives fell apart when my husband sank into a deep depression shortly after the birth of our fifth child. Our lives were lived in a valley of uncertainty, anxiety, hardships and much prayer for many years. After seven years of depression he was released and began the uphill climb back into life, work and family normalcy.

I see now how this valley has enabled me/us to say “I know, I know” to others as they share their struggle. I can relate and offer the hope to them that was given to me. Much in the same way Tessa is giving clear hope and wisdom in this sweet book.

Tessa has beautifully shared personal stories that I can relate to, she ties it seamlessly to scripture, then she prompts with a time to linger in thought before ending with a prayer. I especially like her section at the end of each devotion titled Oasis, then Rest.

This devotional book is unique in format and I find it encouraging me to look inside myself and allow Jesus to heal my hurting places and fill me with encouragement.

I highly recommend this devotional to encourage each of us and to speak clearly to the anxiety so many of us (and our families) face today.

(I had the opportunity to read an advanced reader copy and look forward to buying a hard copy!)

So often devotionals are either steeped in high theology or filled with platitudes. This one is a welcome exception. Tessa Afshar uses her own real life struggles to reach out to readers with honesty and vulnerability. I appreciate both her skilled writing and use of imagery to offer comfort and reassurance during times of great difficulty. This is a book I will pass on to others.

Meditations for Anxious Souls
Tessa’s compilation of 30 meditations in The Rested Soul is a perfect way to begin your day. Her personal stories are beautifully blended with lessons from Scripture which affirm God’s love and care. In vulnerability she shares her struggles and in gratitude for God’s healing power she offers Him glory and praise. The Rested Soul will touch the heart and soul of anyone who has dealt with anxiety, discouragement, lost hope, burnout, loneliness, abandonment, and other struggles of life. At the end of each mediation, Tessa provides an opportunity to reflect, linger, pray and discover the rest each soul seeks. I received an Advanced Review Copy (ARC) of this book for review purposes.

Tessa’s book is so helpful to guide someone through the process of having peace despite burnout, anxiety or chronic pain. She uses her own experiences and the wonder of creation to reflect on what God might be teaching her and finding the root of her discontent. This is a book the reader can savor and revisit. The inclusion of scripture, communication with God, and self reflection all offer ways to connect more deeply with God while working through suffering. The photographs are lovely and add to the beauty of her words. An excellent book that I highly recommend!

I didn’t know how badly I needed this book until I started reading. In the midst of recent, increased challenges, I’ve realized how NOT rested my soul is, and it was in this place that The Rested Soul ministered profoundly to me. I was blessed. I was challenged. I was convicted. I was encouraged. I was refreshed.

Every devotional draws from at least one main Scripture passage, presenting deep truth artfully framed in an extended illustration that helps bring the truth to life, and to the reader’s heart. After a few pages, each devotional concludes with a pattern of reflection, prayer, and application that encourages the reader to truly embrace the Scripture promises presented. While this book is short enough to be read in two or three sittings (one sitting for the dedicated or fast reader), each devotional presents such depth that I recommend the reader meditate on one devotional a day to let the truth really sink in.

I don’t know what I appreciated most: the thought-provoking (and convicting) questions at the end of each devotional; the variety of verses that reinforce the same theme; Tessa’s artful use of common objects or processes (a sunflower, a rug, gardening, glass-blowing) to illustrate spiritual themes; the way she so sensitively and beautifully encourages but challenges her reader; the depth of meaning in a simple phrase that asks the reader to sit for a few extra minutes to unpack the full import; or the rich and personal prayers included with each devotional that turn the reader’s heart upward with fresh praise, conviction, and worship.

I also can’t praise the photography enough. Taken by Tessa’s husband, each photo not only highlights the theme of the devotional but also adds another kind of refreshment for the soul: the refreshment of visual beauty, expertly captured and tastefully included. I often felt my heart go “ahhhh” in a sigh of peace as I admired the scenes or portraits of nature, animals, or simple objects. Yet these photos do more than add a nice aesthetic to the book; they encourage worship and gratitude in the reader and ultimately add to the message of the devotional in bringing rest to the weary soul.

This book is specifically written for someone in a season of anxiety or discouragement (or both), and Tessa addresses these forces with the power of personal experience (the “I’ve been there” and “I understand how you feel”) combined with the power of God’s truth (the “Here is what God says” and “This is what we need to hear”). I received encouragement from her sympathy, felt welcomed by her transparency, and was blessed by the Bible truths that ministered to her.

As someone who also struggles with chronic illness, I especially appreciated Tessa’s transparency about her season dealing with chronic physical trials, and the emotional and spiritual hardships that came along. While this book is perhaps not designed especially for readers with chronic illness, anyone who has faced or is facing a season of physical difficulty will find special comfort, encouragement, and conviction in these devotionals.

I highly recommend Tessa Afshar’s devotional The Rested Soul to any believer who is walking through the dark valley of discouragement or anxiety. The Scripture truths, Tessa’s sweet writing style, and her husband’s photography together present a beautiful, powerful devotional that will help the anxious, discouraged heart find rest in God.

(I was given an ARC in exchange for my honest review, but I would have bought my own copy anyway.)

Reading this beautiful book was like dipping into a luxurious, warm bath—muscles loosen, chest eases, and body floods with deep and calming breaths. As someone whose personality tips toward worry and who has gone through intense bouts of anxiety-induced insomnia, I understand the wreckage worry havocs on the soul. I’ve tasted and seen how Christ alone is my sustaining comfort in such seasons, and this collection of thirty devotions was a poignant reminder of that truth. In each devotion, the author takes the reader by the hand and walks with her through the dark valley to the truth. She’s been there too and understands the low points on the journey but also the way light pierces through the deepest black and paves a pathway out. With personal stories intertwined with Scripture and deep meditations, the author consistently points the reader’s heart toward Jesus in a loving and gentle way. I’ve included some of my favorite quotes below:

“Right now, in this dark place, a part of you is being enlarged. Strengthened to carry the weight of the increase that God has for you. . . . God is increasing His influence in you in order to increase His influence through you” (28, 29).

“When you yield your heart to Jesus in the midst of your worst pounding, instead of destroying you, the hammer of your pain adds a powerful weft into your soul. The very hammer that Satan wielded against me came with a significant impartation from Jesus. The impartation of a deeper reliance on God” (82).

“You may have enthroned some negative conviction in your mind. You may have elevated a defeatist thought to take the Master’s place in your life. A place of rulership. That false master must be dethroned. . . . No one gets to have the throne of your mind except Jesus” (140).

“We are creatures of the Spirit. Miracle-making, miracle-receiving eternal beings. But we are also simple biological things. Jesus never overlooks that. You shouldn’t either. Part of having a rested soul is to make sure you take time for simple rest” (157).

Stunning, full-color photos sprinkled throughout and reflection questions and prayers at the end of each devotion, make this book even more of a treasure. I highly commend it to you!

Tessa’s new devotional, the rested soul has been a timely respite for a busy season of life for me.
The devotional includes charming photography by her husband and vignettes of wisdom from her personal life.
I really adore the end of the chapter reflective sections which include a prayer, a verse and a deeper call to mediate on liberating truths.
In a world bustling with activity and hustle, it is hard to find pockets of spaces to still the mind, quiet the soul and process events deeply.
As someone who has struggled with anxiety, this devotional has provided me with peace of mind and has helped calm my heart on days when I've needed my soul to rest from the flurry of activities.
Her words are a tender reminder that living in the throes of burnout is not the only option; there is a path forward to obtain soul rest.
Tessa’s words, are laced with a calmness and are a refreshing invitation to enter into an oasis of rest as a gift from God. A timely exhortation that rest is on the other side of anxious thoughts if I choose to surrender and press in to receive from my Heavenly Father’s unlimited supply of peace.
While my own capacity is limited, I am reminded that soul can be filled with rest through safety and security readily available through the presence of quietness and the comforting love of God.
This book for anyone who needs to draw strength and peace from a source that always satisfies, the heart and character of God.
Tessa’s personal spiritual walk and depth shine brightly in this new devotional and I am utterly grateful for this book for it is really what my has settled my heart in my season.
If your soul has lost its way from the path of peace and rest, this devotional is for you.
I received an early reader copy and no compensation for a review.

Tessa Afshar's The Rested Soul is a beautiful devotional book - in every way. Visually, it's lovely, from cover to cover. Her husband took the photos which grace the pages. More importantly, Tessa Afshar's beautiful soul shines through on every page. She's vulnerable, sharing with the reader her own struggles with anxiety and burnout then giving hope that Jesus walks with us through every trial.
Some Bible studies on anxiety and depression can feel like taking your medicine. "I'm depressed. I guess I'll slog through this study, and maybe I won't feel so down."
This book is a day at the spa, a swim in the ocean of God's love. I've been recommending it to everyone I know.
Each meditation begins with a scripture, then the author walks us through how she found peace in the midst of depression, anxiety, burnout, or pain.
Next comes the heading, "Linger," a question urging you to dig deeper.
A prayer comes next. I love prayers that rejuvenate your walk.
The oasis and rest sections take you deeper still, immersing you in God's love and care.
This is a book I will return to again and again and one I will highly recommend for anyone struggling with burnout, anxiety, or depression.
I've read every one of her novels, and I'm thrilled to add this book of meditations to my collection.

As a fan of Tessa's writing, I was excited to get my hands on this beautiful devotional. I went through her Bible study so I was extremely ready for this. Tessa did a fantastic job writing this devotional. I was intrigued from beginning to end. I didn't think this was one of those "cupcake" devotionals that just sweeten you up, but it also wasn't a hard one either. It was a great read!

I felt the feeling of being rested as I went through this devotional. Being in the season I am in right now this was a devotional that kept me in that mindset of being rested. I think it's great if you read this during the day, specifically in the morning as it can set the right tone. The setup of the devotional is as such: Scripture to meditate on, the devotional, Linger which is where you can sit in the presence of the Lord, prayer, and ending with Oasis and Rest.

Tessa's insight is superb! If you went through her Bible study and read any of her books you'd know that she has an intricate way with words that pulls you in. The devotionals connect to your heart and really make you think about your relationship with God. The photos added by her husband were also impeccable and made me think more about resting in God specifically.

I loved it! I highly recommend it!!

The Rested Soul, the new devotional by one of my all-time favorite authors, Tessa Afshar, was a blessing to me during a tumultuous time.
Designed with short, insightful daily readings, this unique book shares wisdom gained through Tessa’s own personal struggles with anxiety and fear. Each section concludes with prompts to “Linger” in the meditation, spend time with God in “Prayer,” reflect on the Lord’s desires for my journey (“Oasis”), and “Rest” in His sheltering arms. I was encouraged by the author’s gentle reminders that Jesus walks with us through all the trials we face. It is illustrated with beautiful photographs taken by her husband that add to the calming nature of the book.
I have also read Tessa’s Biblical fiction novels, as well as The Way Home, her Bible study on the Book of Ruth, and I have never been disappointed. The stories she shared in this devotional deeply resonated with me. Without a doubt, I will be referring to it again, and I highly recommend it to anyone struggling with anxiety. It is truly balm for the soul.

I love this author's biblical fiction novels but I'm also a fan of her non-fiction works. In her newest book, Tessa Afshar focuses on three subjects that are especially relevant to her, and her total transparency becomes a blessing for the rest of us! The Rested Soul targets anxiety, discouragement, and depression and each of the thirty meditations provides nourishment for weary souls. I love that they each follow the same format: God's Word as an introduction, Tessa's reflections, a question to spur our thinking, a prayer to guide us, and encouraging words that promote peace and rest.

I'm always inspired by her eloquent insights, but The Rested Soul has so much more! There are lovely photographs taken by Afshar's husband that capture the beauty of God's creation and offer additional proof of His Presence in our lives! Joy, comfort, and assurance are found within the pages of this book!

I love this book! The watercolor cover perfectly reflects the author’s unique personal reflections to inspire her readers with hope and faith.
The Rested Soul feels like a personal letter from the author to each reader. She shares her vulnerabilities, inviting us to do the same, creating a deep, individual connection.
Her husband created the beautiful photographs, again emphasizing the personal outreach.
It's one of the most intimate and relatable books I've ever read.
Each chapter begins with a Bible verse and then her story. She expands on the meaningful message, bringing wisdom and prayers to bridge the relevance to our lives.
I was tempted to read it through but didn't want to rush it, so I savored a chapter daily.
Tessa Afshar is a consummate storyteller. Her writing and story images stay with you.
I know my Seeds of Faith Book Groups will enjoy reading it. It is also a beautiful gift for family and friends.

Tessa’s new devotional, The Rested Soul, is an oasis of rest for the reader. Unlike many devotionals, she digs deeper past her battle with anxiety, directing us to linger with a question that causes us to look deep within our hearts. Where are we struggling to rest in God’s grace? With a prayer of submission, we are lovingly drawn to uncover our lack of trust in our Heavenly Father and bring it to the cross, where we find forgiveness. A promise from scripture calms us with grace and healing to our burdened souls. There, we find restoration.

Tessa’s transparency as she relates her struggles with anxiety and fear is refreshing. Readers will find peace as they immerse themselves in Tessa’s story and take visual delight in the calming photos on its pages. I highly recommend The Rested Soul to anyone who desires to put aside their burdens and refresh themselves in God’s love and care for them.

Through touching excerpts from her personal struggle with anxiety, Tessa Afshar has created a deeply moving devotional that will encourage both those whose lives are tangled in despair and also those on the periphery seeking to help a beloved friend or family member. Every story, scripture verse, and reflection prompt has been crafted to guide the reader deeper in their relationship with Jesus because as Afshar writes, “that is where you will find rest for your soul.” Because she has struggled with crippling anxiety, the devotions are designed to be simple so as not to overwhelm those in the throes of anxiety and depression. One of my favorite lines from The Rested Soul is the reminder that even though your struggle may seem dark and overwhelming, He has not forgotten nor forsaken you. Rather, “God is increasing His influence in you in order to increase His influence through you.” What a beautiful reminder that in God’s economy, nothing is wasted, not even our struggles.

This devotional is thought-invoking and brings peace to an anxious mind. Tessa’s exploring her own anxiety can help in many situations we find ourselves in this hurried, busy world.
“I discovered an intimacy with God that became the spine of my life.” Pg 10
Hopefully this is a statement that everyone can take to heart. We need to embrace God and hold onto him in our everyday struggles. 30 lessons- one for each day or whatever pace you like. This is a wonderful book to help you work through whatever is holding you back from a peaceful, quiet relationship with God.
“In different situations, whether facing fear, discouragement, or the power of sin, Jesus whispers “Take heart.” Pg 33

I received an Advanced Review Copy of this book for review purposes which I am happy to share. This devotional was a little different than some that require a lot of answers to questions. This one truly helps to quiet your heart and soul by sharing examples of those (sometimes even the author) going through anxious or worrisome times. Then it gives Scripture to turn to to help us through those times. Even if you're not going through a tough time right now, we all know it usually isn't long before we are. These meditations will help prepare your heart and soul for those times and help to put the focus on the One Who will see you through them. The pictures in the book, taken by the author's husband, are exceptional, too!

Sometimes I need a reminder to quiet my heart. There is so much going on in the world, so much going on in my life, that I forget to do that. What a perfect devotional for such a time as this. Afshar not only encourages and inspires, she shares her own life experiences that readers will connect with and learn from.

I enjoyed the set up of the devotional, as well as the beautiful pictures! Each devotion will cause you to pause, ponder, and reflect. I can see myself coming back to this time and time again. Highly recommend for all those looking for quiet - quiet of the mind and heart.
