“Rob mixes intrigue, murder, and magic into his own cool blend.” – Larry Correia
Edward sought a future of honor and hope, but only got murder and mayhem.
He came to the Empire of Makhaira to join the Imperial Guard, who admit only the best. Instead, he pledges his sword—and his life—to an innkeeper rather than the emperor.
In a land known for intricate plots and ancestral enmities, the empire’s corruption seeks to end his life with knives in the night and hidden treachery. And he must face these blades while memories of a father slain, a king defied, and oaths broken threaten his soul.
Can he find the one bringing schism, death, and hate before that steel tastes his blood? Or will be just another who came to the empire to lose everything?

Enter Edward. Think of him as a Viking, on his way to an Empire where he hopes to enlist in the Imperial Guard. Edward has already battle experience, and a past too. A past weighing on his soul. After helping a caravan rout some raiders, he stops in the wonderful lakeside city of Achrida, enjoying the hospitality of another northlander, innkeeper of the Frank Faerie Inn, and then, oh well, stuff happens. Travellers just get snatched in front of him by a hit team and as it happened in the inn, he is now honor-bound to rescue the abducted persons or at least to find the culprits. And in this wonderful town, he realizes that it is not only the waters of the lake which are deep, but also the politics. A great mystery story in a complex fantasy setting, with a very enjoyable cast of characters, a solid and devious plot as well as plenty of action.
An enjoyable tale but I must admit that the names of the participants confused me and I was unsure who was who most of the time , the city map was handy but I saw no point in the country map , the MC Edward is a pleasant enough character with a dark past which we learn very little about until the end but he takes his oaths seriously.
