Jasmine Prejean finds herself indulged in the prostitution pits of New Orleans. Unlike most prostitutes, Ms. Prejean was the valedictorian of Holy Rosary Christian Academy. Instead of attending Dillards, Xavier or Tulane University, she chooses to enroll at Tchoupitoulas Mumbo Room - The Big Easy's exclusive brothel. Jasmine's life dramatically changes after meeting Harper Williams, one of Forbes Top 100 Entrepreneurs. Harper introduces Jasmine to the luxuries and desires of life every woman yearns; nonetheless, she struggles to abide by the millionaire’s only request - Remain loyal, truthful and never keep any secrets. Torn between her heart’s emotionally attachment to Harper and her body’s physical lust towards her erotic demanding clients, the nymphet faces the biggest dilemma of her young life. Author, Kenneth Devon Hawkins, craftily creates a must read masterpiece. He manages to capture the reader's attention and hold it hostage throughout the novel. The sexually explicit scenes imbed the readers' mind leaving a long lasting impression. After reading this novel, readers will never view sex the same.
According to its synopsis, “Prostitute Flange” is about a prostitute, Jasmine Prejean, who falls for Harper Williams, a successful business man and entrepreneur. Knowing what she does for a living, Harper only asks for loyalty and that she keeps no secrets. But for Jasmine, when that itch needs scratching, it needs scratching. She finds herself torn between the possibility of what could be with Harper and what is with her current lifestyle. So that’s what the book is supposed to be about. What it actually was about was much of nothing. Yes, there is a character named Jasmine. She went from valedictorian to prostitute. Why? Readers never learn. Harper saw her one night at her “job” and took a special interest in her. Why? Readers never learn. “Prostitute Flange” is narrated in first person by main character Jasmine and readers stand still in time and learn what little they do about her through her thoughts. Through her narration readers also learn a little about other characters in her immediate vicinity. Unfortunately though, the tidbits of information about these characters is more than readers learn about Jasmine, Harper or their relationship, yet these characters do nothing to propel the plot. And the characters that should be pertinent to the plot are practically blank slates.
The book takes place over the course of one day yet nothing really happens and readers don’t meet the infamous Harper Williams until over halfway through the book. Everything prior to that was Jasmine’s flashbacks, thoughts and interaction with a few others. “Prostitute Flange” lacked development - plot as well as character – and editing. It was a very quick read, yet I couldn’t help asking WHY after reading the last sentence.
Upon completing the book I can see that the author did ultimately have a message but he took a long, non-scenic route to get there. While the premise was promising, the execution falls way short of the mark. As is, I cannot recommend “Prostitute Flange” to others.
