Rick Gualtieri loves to write adventure, mayhem, and snarky dialogue. His bestselling Tome of Bill series combines all of this into a world of supernatural danger with hard-hitting action and plenty of sharp-tongued geeky humor.

Rick lives alone in a dark, evil place called New Jersey with only his wife, three kids, and countless pets to both keep him company and constantly plot against him. When he's not busy monkey-clicking out words, he can typically be found jealously guarding his collection of vintage Transformers from all who would seek to defile them.

I wonder if Rick Gualtieri even realizes that he has such issues with women and gay people

Four books of toxic misogyny, homophobia and bad attempts at geek culture references. Female characters are bitches, whores or beasts (for committing the crime of not being sexually attractive to our "heroes"). More minor female characters are "T&A" for Bill to drool over.
Then there are the grammatical errors (I guess a decent copyeditor wasn't it the budget); this crapshow is full of them.
There are funny urban fantasy novels out there, Rick Gualtieri hasn't written any of them.

As more than a few other reviews have mentioned, Bill is basically a complete compilation of every stereotype about people who are computer programmers, male, and well, geeky. He only really cares about two things about every female but his "true love" and if you think those things are tits and ass, give yourself a gold star. Unless you want to add a third thing, which is if they'll sleep with him or not.

Lemme put this another way, Bill is probably a hero to all of the guys who are #Gamergate activists.

Look, i am normally right there with crude or vulgar jokes. I love snark. I do not love this book. I don't even really like it. I don't like cardboard jackass cutouts, who never change at all, be they male or female. Literally, I think the only character that shows any development throughout this whole tome is Bill's ultimate adversary, who only really is a character in the 4th book.

Also, now, I don't like the word thus.

There is one reason and one reason only that I will (probably) read the next 1-3 books: I just wanna know how it ends. Book 4 ended in enough of a cliffhanger for my completist side to really kick up a fuss. On the other hand, if i wait long enough, that part of my brain may forget that we don't know how this all ends. That might also be a winner.

So, this series has grown on me like a good fungus.

Mushrooms are fungi, bitches. Think about it.

It's grown on me so much that I'm going to go talk to the security guy more (I know his name. I've just broken them accidentally before. I don't like hurting them. It just makes me feel worse. But I'm more than broken. I'm looking for baggage that goes with mine?). That sounds rather pompous of me. Maybe because I've been pompous. Misplaced pride is stupid. I'm a hypocrite. I've always known it. I've tried to avoid being one, and I know I'm one in much bigger ways. But...OH, YEAH, I CAN'T FUNCTION IN ONE MODE. PICK A MODE. PICK ANY MODE. SELF-AWARENESS OF HYPOCRITE MODE IS GUILT MODE.

Down, Hulk, Down. Where was I? Oh, yeah, something about fungus. And feeling generous.

If you're really, honestly interested in the books, I'll give the audiobooks to 5 people. Just message me on here. This is not an empty gesture. If you're willing to spend the $2 to get the 4 first books as I suggested before um, see previous post on the previous books; I'm lazy, I'll gift you the 5th audiobook. First 5 rule still applies.

SEPARATE RANT: I love the audiobook narrator for this book. FOR THIS BOOK. He's perfect for this book. Except for some OMGREALLY shit. It's VOILA..as in "surprise"...as in Voo that rhymes Zoo sand Pooh and Poo. Say it with me: V (say ZOO but put a V there instead of the Z. Good boy.)-WAH (rhymes with paw, like I'm going to smack you upside the head with it)-LA (LA like the uppity French speak it. Likes it's all a lark. You can even put the hand gesture with if. After all, it is a French word.)

JUST STOP SAYING "VIOLA INSTEAD OF VOILA." Mispronounciation is one thing. Transplacing it with a beloved stringed instrument is another. And it's "eaVesdropping" not "E's dropping or EEZEdropping." [Brickwall: bangs head: doesn't help: ouch.]

There are a few more. They grate. Knee-jerk irritations that result in literal muscle spasms (thanks for the extra eye-twitches, ass-hat), but I'll keep the narrator.

I'd just like a few minutes alone with him to teach him how to pronounce some stuff. I think he might like it. If he does, I might need a few hours...

This contains the first 4 novels from the 'Tome of Bill' series. As a big fan of vampires, I really, really wanted to like these books, enough that I bought 4-in-1. And I suppose that I did find the books enjoyable enough, except for one aspect: the protagonist.

Honestly, he's a distillation of everything gross about nerd culture, including casual (and not so casual) misogyny and rape culture. It's obvious the author wants him to come across as a likeable every man but to me he just came across as cringe-inducing.

The rest of the characters, the state of the world, the politics were enough to make me wanna try Book 5 but if it's not an immense reversal of characterisation, I'll probably just drop the series there.

The Tome of Bill Compendim (Vol.1) is the collection of the first four stories in Author Rick Gualtieri's hilarious The Tome of Bill novel series. There's no real way to properly explain my love for this series in just a few sentences, so I'm going to post my reviews for each of the books included in this Compendium!

BILL THE VAMPIRE (BOOK 1):

Bill The Vampire is the first in Author Rick Gualtieri’s Supernatural Comedy series The Tome of Bill, setting the stage for newly turned nerd vampire Bill.

Before I begin this review, I have to say this… THIS WAS THE GREATEST VAMPIRE NOVEL I HAVE EVER READ! With the influx of vampire stories lurking around, this was the perfect counter. If this doesn’t get turned into a movie I will give up on Hollywood forever.

Bill Ryder is a video game programmer, spending his days playing games (video, board, and role-playing) and trying to think of ways to get laid. He lives with his two friends Ed and Tom, who are both as equally nerdy and excited at the prospect of having a live vampire as a friend. Their interactions were absolutely perfect, reminding me greatly of me and my own friends. I related to those scenes very well, and I laughed out loud more than once while reading.

After being turned as a part of a game a coven of vampires in SoHo were playing, Bill discovers that he’s a legendary type of vampire that can resist being compelled by the older vampires. He uses this to his advantage, scaring the other, meatier members of his coven to ensure his own safety as a fish in a tank of sharks.

His arsenal includes his roommates, a sexy vampire vixen who loathes him, and the ultimate defense against just about anything: a smartass mouth.

In honesty, I was a little apprehensive while going into this novel. I had read a few vampire satires in the past and, although they could elicit a few laughs here and there, they just couldn’t do it for me. But Bill The Vampire hits the mark with precision. I was captured almost instantly after starting, and only put it down for extreme situations – during which I would itch to get back to reading. By the time I was done reading I thought I’d have to massage my facial muscles out of their near-permanent smile.

Bill The Vampire was a fantastic read! I can’t say it enough.

SCARY DEAD THINGS (BOOK 2):

Scary Dead Things by Rick Gualtieri is the second in his Comedy/Supernatural series The Tome of Bill, transitioning vampire Bill’s already ruined, but salvaged life into more chaos.

I’ve heard of the old joke, “just one more chapter” before, but never truly understood it until I started reading this book. I found myself up at six in the morning, exhausted, but very unwilling to put down this book. I finally understand that it isn’t a joke, but an actual thing that happens when you’re drawn into such an amazing book – such as everything I’ve read by Rick Gualtieri so far!

Bill, now the leader of his own coven, has been loaded with a whole new slew of issues. Unable to talk to the girl he’s been crushing on for years, leading a coven of vampires who wouldn’t hesitate to tear his head off, being sent off to China, being hounded by an ancient vampire princess, and being hunted by Chinese vampire assassins… Bill has a lot going on in his un-life.

Once again full of the same wit and humor as the previous novel, Scary Dead Things is a phenomenal read. I couldn’t put this book down for longer than an hour. Bill is my new hero! Except for all the beatings, I would give anything to be in his place!

Rick Gualtieri is quickly becoming one of my top favorite authors with his wit, humor, incredible writing capabilities, and master story telling skills. I bow to this author and his The Tome of Bill series!

THE MOURNING WOODS (BOOK 3):

The Mourning Woods is the third installment in Author Rick Gualtieri’s The Tome of Bill series, pitting nerdy vampire Bill against an enemy that has hated his kind’s undead guts since before his greatest grandfather was born.

Being the third book in the series, there is always some worry that it may be the one to ruin it all – but by no means does this apply to the story of Bill and his gangly group of friends. This book was the final factor in my decision to add this entire series forever in my list of all time favorites.

Bill, although still the snarky smartass that he is, has grown throughout the story. He isn’t just jumping head first into things any more. He takes the time to consider the consequences of his actions, worrying about more than just himself in this book – a departure from the previous novels where he was mostly just trying to survive. The fate of the world has fallen into his lap, much against his will, and he tries valiantly not to screw it up.

Although, he’s still Bill… and what’s Bill if not a bit of a klutz?

The wit and humor are still very much so present that made this book’s predecessors so amazing, and even adds an element of serious drama and worldwide peril. The ending to this novel left me utterly shocked and prepared to read the next one ASAP!

HOLIER THAN THOU (BOOK 4):

Holier Than Thou by Rick Gualtieri is the fourth installment in the The Tome of Bill series, bringing the cataclysmic peril of the third book right up to Bill’s doorstep.

It’s been a month since the third book’s epic cliffhanger, and Bill hasn’t come any closer to solving his dilemma. The Icon – the very woman he’s in love with – has risen and threatens all of vampire kind. Unfortunately, that’s only the beginning of his troubles. The Magi are up in arms over the Icon’s appearance, and an attack on Bill’s coven leaves him and his allies severely lacking in man power. Now he’s gotta figure out how to outrun the vampires, Magi, and a group of religious fanatics straight out of an Indiana Jones movie.

All in all, a normal day for Bill The Vampire.

As the fourth book in the series, The Tome of Bill takes a major character development turn for its main character. Things are getting heavy for Bill, and he’s definitely feeling the stress. “When it rains, it pours” is an apt statement for the theme of this installment. But, despite this, Author Rick Gualtieri maintains his signature wit and humor throughout this novel. It just so happens between those funny scenes there’s some awesome action taking place.

I didn’t think I could sincerely love a series as much as I love this one! I’ve been hooked since page one of book one. I can’t imagine giving up any time soon!

Besides, I’m totally in love with Gan!

ADDITIONAL CONTENT:

In addition to the four novels, there are two new shorts and a character interview. The two shorts are fantastic add-ons to the series - keeping the same comedy and light darkness the main series has - and the interviews were hysterical. My favorite, of course, was Gan's! How can you not love her?

As a series, I give it a whopping FIVE out of FIVE stars!

3.5 stars. I liked the premise and characters for the most part. Nice hook with the nerd being turned and still looking the same being surrounded by the super pretty. My only real problem is the general lack of character growth over 4 books. By the 4th book Bill's constant inner whining really started to grate. As a gamer you'd think he would learn and adapt faster but he only gradually changed and did not throw himself into learning his new skills and abilities like I thought he should. Still, not bad. I am interested in the next set of stories and will pick them up if they come to audible.

Hates women, especially nice looking ones. All women are rape fantasies except for his "True Love", who he seems unable to talk to because he's such a NERD! Zero dimensional characters. Mildly funny and inventive in terms of plot. Zero stars character depth or realism, three stars imagination and humor. Zero stars for repeating phrases too many times. I read the first two volumes hoping for some growth in characters, but after seeing none in the second and reading other review that say little change occurs in the succeeding volumes, I give up on this series.

meh...This series was highly recommended to me by a good friend so I gave it a go. I didn't finish this volume because the story from book to book was derivative and the characters were shallow. The teenage-level sexual 'humor' grew thin rather quickly. I can understand why this series is so popular, however, it simply wasn't for me.

I slogged through the first 3 books but couldn't start the 4th one, just too much 'bitch' and 'beast' and stupid homo jokes. Have been reading gay fiction for so long I forgot how horrible some straight characters are written. Meh. Could have been so much better as some parts were genuinely funny.

THE TOME OF BILL is an entertaining urban fantasy novel about a somewhat skeevy nerd who gets himself turned into a vampire as part of a murder party, only to discover he's the legendary "Freewill" that can resist the control of other vampire's powers. Protected by an Elder vampire, he irritates the beautiful and dangerous coven members who want to destroy him as soon as his master's protection ends. Bill must figure out a way to survive the wrath of his coven master as well as how to keep his equally geeky roommates alive. Overall, I found this book very entertaining but was put off by Bill's use of sexist and ableist slurs.

Volume 1# compiles the first four books of the series into a single volume and we have a number of interesting stories about how he catches the attention of a 12 year old hyperactive vampire princess, how he's forced to negotiate a treaty with Bigfeet, and finally confronting the fact that his "girlfriend" might be as legednary as himself. Bill is, himself, the weakest part of the book since he's a sexist pig with serious issues relating to anyone who isn't a straight white male geek like himself. He's a compilation of every geek stereotype imaginable and not all the positive ones either.

Still, I love Sally and found myself strangely addicted anyway.

Yeah, I am bulk reviewing the rest of the first half of this series (books 2-4). See my review of Book 1 here- https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

My hopes were pretty much dashed, as the author hasn't really done much more character developement in the next three books in the series. This genre is an easy genre to develop characters- you set the lengths of lives in a vampire novel in ways that are impossible in other books. I should know way more than the shallow details I have about the main character, his right hand partner in the coven, his roommates, his love interest, and his roommate's love interest. Instead, they feel so unimportant to me. By the third book in a series, I should absolutely love or loathe SOMEONE....anyone. I feel really "Meh" about this group.

Stop trying to sell me the idea that Bill is a good guy. Good guys don't think the way he does.

SPOILERS- Who is so devoted to their crush that they haven't been seeking a relationship-even a casual one, but is constantly thinking misogynistic thoughts about the women he comes in contact with? I understand noticing them, but I am so sick of Bill internal monologues being interrupted that way. The author is trying to hard to make Bill "good" without really writing him that way. He doesn't feel passionate about fighting for himself or loved ones, he constantly thinks about running away or such....and yes, a protaganist can be conflicted, but that isn't how Bill comes off. He comes of as a geeky, "friend-zoned"(eyeroll), 'nice guy' stereotype that we've all seen online....all he is missing is the fedora and using "M'Lady" in his speech. (And sharing his misogyny out loud).
Sally is a one dimensional money-grubbing, slutty-dressing c*cktease (in the protagonists mind, at least)....We have no true back story at book FOUR!!! For a vampire.

Other things that bothered me:

- For a smart guy, Bill does absolutely NOTHING from day one to learn or practice his skills, normal vamp or Freewill inclusive. It's mentioned more than once that one of the bennies of being the Freewill is needing less sleep....so he has the time (between the 'adventures').

- The Coven is supposed to be organized and well run under Sally, under the ruse of Bill's leadership...yet Sally doesn't have him even put up the illusion of being leadership- i.e. He should be in contact with Boston and the First Coven, even if only for show. He should also have to dress/act the part in front of the vamps he supposedly rules over, even if just for show. There should be no need to steal cars with the Covens supposed resources.

-In this situation, you'd expect a vampire leader to up his personal security- especially if living with two humans he cares about, no?

- With his (& his roommates) skills, why wouldn't Bill be 'keeping an eye', virtually speaking, on Boston since he distrusts Colin?

There are so many lost opportunities in this series...it could have been great, but it just falls flat. I gave it four books...I'm not going to read any more. And that's a huge deal for me, I usually hang in to the very end -hoping beyond hope it'll get better.

Not your typical undead legend

--- Potential spoilers ---

This story (Audible edition) was recommended to me by a co-worker; Thank you Sean, this has been a great journey so far!

This story is a welcome change of pace from my normal post-apocalyptic genre style readings. Mr. Fetherolf does a fantastic job of bringing to life Bill, a completely relatable newbie to the undead afterlife who holds secrets he continues to develop throughout the first four books in this series. Along with his companion Sally, his reason for entering into this new life, and their coven of “loyal” vampires, Bill quickly realizes that he holds more power than can be expected for someone freshly turned.

As the legendary “Free will” of vampire lore past, Bill wields powers that far exceed those of normal vampires, even those several hundred years his senior. Rick does a fantastic job of telling Bill’s tale while he shatters traditional depictions of vampires in the modern day. An example of this would be the way crosses react in this storyline. It is not so much the cross itself that wields power, but the faith placed into the item.

As the journey continues, Bill learns the history related to the race of vampires and this includes tales of the “Icons”. Quickly learning that he is bound to fight and destroy a newly arisen Icon before it destroys him and his kind, he is emplaced within a very complicated triangle which will test what remains of his humanity. All the while, he is thrust into a world hidden in plain sight that consists of vampires, other mythical creatures, magical entities, and some power hungry entities intent on bringing about their own particular world view.

This is a truly wonderful story filled with some crude humor that keeps the story lively, moving along, and fresh. Rick is a masterful story teller and I have grown attached to his character, Bill, and the wonderful Facebook group Rick hosts and takes part in. If you are looking for a new twist on the vampire genre (that doesn’t require vampires to sparkle), dig into this story. This four-book collection is a great way to dive right in and I am now off to books five through eight to continue and finish the journey.

About the only question I have is, as is discussed throughout the books, how do the vampires in Boston take care of finances? Sally wields a centurion card (black American Express) and there are briefs accounts of some of the finances for the local coven, but who manages the higher-order finances? Heck, in the movie Blade, some of the financing is done by taking jewelry from slain vampires and other unworldly creatures and then selling/pawning it.

A great series and I highly recommend it. Easily a 5/5 for the first four books.

Simply Juvenile

If you like your humor male, juvenile (bordering on infantile), and detracting from the storyline then go ahead and read this series. I tortured myself for too long, hoping the series would get better. Or at least more adult. What I got seemed written by a pothead with an adolescent mentality. I can suspend belief for many things regarding fantasy and science fiction, and even Bond movies. But this series was utterly ridiculous. Snarky and witty humor is appreciated. The reviews seemed to indicate that's what I would read. Apparently these people hang out with Seth Rogan too often. Read Simon R. Green or Jim Butcher. This guy is responsible for reducing the national collective IQ. You've been warned.

I only just discovered "The Tome of Bill" and have read all the available books one after the other. They are a very entertaining take on the vampire genre, and I don't remember the last time I laughed so loudly or so often. In between the laughs there are some genuine thrills and spills too, and the whole thing is an emotional rollercoaster - scream if you want to go faster. Be prepared to care about particular vampires in the way you haven't since Spike and Angel in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" - this series is like Buffy for adults, but so much better than that sounds, now I have read it back to myself.

Bought the first four and read them over the next three days. I really liked these for a fun read. They kept me reading and laughing all the way. I know people who are tech smart but street stupid and while some took offense to the depiction of Bill and the other characters some of the personalities ring true. It’s meant to be funny and not insulting nor politically correct so if u are sensitive to sarcasm this isn’t the series for u. For those that can laugh at themselves and their quirks...enjoy. If they ever make this into a movie, Ryan Reynolds from Deadpool would be perfect for it...lol

I enjoyed it. It reflects perfectly the guy day dreams about his dream girl. It started out crappy for Bill but as the stories went along it started to show some teeth and how he and cohorts tuck together through all 4 books. I will say though his and Sally's relationship got a little grating at first but that soon passed will finish up this series soon

These books are capital F unny

Rick Gualtieri has written a truly awesome line of comedy horror novels. The main character is funny, snarky and really comes across as a pain in the ass. If you like vampires that don't sparkle or have friends who are gamers, nerds or just plain socially awkward you will love this series

Interesting read

Well, it's a good book, but the utter banality of the main characters sometimes makes me want to kick them all in the head, bad things happen and the plot moves forward. The short stories are not as good as the main novels though. I did enjoy reading the books and I do recommend them.

I bought this ages ago and never got around to reading it. I got the audible companion, and listened to that. The narrator was pretty good. Sometimes it got a little confusing as to who was talking. I really enjoyed it overall. It made me laugh. There was a lot of cursing, which doesn't necessarily bother me, but it did detract away from the story at times. I intend to continue this series.
