⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars.

Wow! What a wild ride of excitement, intrigue, adventure, scheming, and anguish! I'm still processing the craziness of the vol, it had layers of developments character wise and plot wise, also it ends with an intriguing continuation.
Anne along with Keith and Kat are assigned to negotiate with the leader of the fairy merchant to collect fairies for sugar crafting because of the events of v7. They get into lots of obstacles and trouble like always, Anne and Hugh end up being in great danger which was incredibly anguishing.

There were lots of developments or more like regressions 😒 in Challe's part and his love towards Anne. You would think that after what happened in 7 and his realizations and the apparent resolve of his declaration he would man up and move forward but nooo *facepalm*. He even regressed big time and behaved icy cold towards Anne because he thought it was the best way to protect her happiness. All because he doesn't understand the meaning of a family, which makes sense due to his context of trauma, fairy nature, and cold logical personality. It was heartbreaking to see how despite everything they've been through, and the beautiful bond they developed since v1 he tried to erase all that with this attitude, acting like he was just a job or she was a master he resented 😩😭. This was the worst thing he did and the ironic part is that it's all for her future happiness with Keith. He also said to Salim he was just a shadow and it was not her job to pamper her after telling her in v6 that it was okay to be pampered 😭😡. This parallel completely wrecked me, I had to listen to painful angsty songs for therapy.
Then Anne chooses to negotiate with the Wolf guy, he was a huge creep with his intimidation and sexual innuendos, I hated it, he didn't do more than that but I was scared for Anne. But despite that Anne's unwavering compassion and strength shined even with such a creep like Stowe. With every vol she grows more and more, and I love how strong and brave she is, after all she's the archetype of the resilient maiden that refuses to back down while being kind and fighting for her beliefs.
I'm glad that Challe and Salim were outside while she was with Stowe but still, an uncomfortable scene. What really gutted me was his huge emotional abandonment with Anne, he's not the chattiest or coziest guy but he erected an icy gulf between them, more so than before. He still protected her and told her to go to rest but he insisted on being cold, that really hurt me. This made Anne sad and he didn't seem to notice or care much because of his lack of emotinal intelligence or for the sake of her future happiness 😩.

Anne and Hugh are accused of treason by the Earl for protecting Stowe against him, accusing them of what he did. Also the Earl was so blinded and paranoid that he didn't cared that if Stowe died the fairy merchants would have gone underground and the government wouldn't have any tax money, society would have gone into chaos.
Also the mystery third stone brother made an awesome appearance, he was a menace.
Then at the end Challe choose to act again nice with Anne like before because Keith made a deal with him, thank you Keith. But Challe still mantains his resolve of not confessing his love because he still belives wholeheartedly that Keith is best for her.
Challe needs to discover and understand the meaning of family and gain this insight, if he does he will confess to Anne. I'm intrigued to see how this tin man fairy will gain this understanding and finally see a future with her.

I have only one complaint about this book……..WHYYYY WAS THERE ONLY THREE FREAKING INTERACTIONS BETWEEN CHALLE AND ANNE?? Like I understand they were setting the grounds for the next book, but come on now. They only talked maybe three times and they were interrupted two of the three times! And they were fighting the other time! Also I kinda think that Challe needs to just destroy the human kingdom at this point. Like the human are never going to change. But other then literally starving me of any interactions between the two main leads I love this book. 💙💙
