Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich was a Roman Catholic Augustinian nun, stigmatic, mystic, visionary and ecstatic.

The daughter of a peasant couple, Anne Catherine Emmerich worked as a seamstress and servant before entering an Augustinian convent in 1802 at age 28. Frail and pious, she became known for her ecstasies, visions of the supernatural and "conversations" with Jesus.

After she became bedridden in 1813 she developed the stigmata -- bleeding wounds corresponding to those of the crucified Christ. A church investigation pronounced the wounds genuine. Ill for many years until her death at age 49, she offered up her suffering for the souls in purgatory. She was beatified on October 3, 2004 by Pope John Paul II.

Famously the basis for the film The Passion of the Christ, this book portrays the Scourging and Crucifixion as even more violent than one might expect, and is pretty graphic even for the modern reader. Emmerich states that divine aid was required to enable Jesus to withstand the prolonged torture; certainly there is enough suffering described to kill a man at least twice over.

Most of the book is spent describing Holy Week in detail, including supernatural activity associated with the Resurrection. Emmerich also covers the Ascension, Pentecost, early baptisms in Jerusalem, and the habitation of Mary in Ephesus. Very, very Catholic in its interpretation of the Blessed Sacrament and the Blessed Virgin, and its assertion that the modern-day sacraments are exactly as Jesus commanded!

Emmerich usually doesn't make any predictions about the future, but at one point says that it was revealed to her that Satan would be loosed on the earth in a special way fifty to sixty years before the year 2000...i.e. in the 1940s. I would dearly love to know if this line was in the original German versions published in the nineteenth century or was sneakily inserted by 20th-century translators. It seems too prescient/coincidental to be real.

What now? These volumes are incredible, what now? Really, I love reading the bible but these bring the bible to life and fill in the gaps. There are probably countless stories we don't know that Our Lord did here on earth and continues to do. He is and was and is to come. He fills the who world with Himself, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We can never get enough, can we? And if we think we've had enough we need to ask for the longing for the love of Him and for the wanting of Him. For He is our ALL.

And Our Lady, Our Blessed Mother, the more I pray the Rosary, the more I devote to her, the more I see how important she was, how important her history was and how important the whole iineage of Jesus was and is. We are blessed, truly who know and love her.
