A quirky new collection by New York Times bestselling author Tim Dorsey. In the tradition of Pineapple Grenade and The Riptide Ultra-Glide, a peculiar new volume of odds and ends from the world of everyone's favorite Florida psychopath—Serge Storms!
Among the flotsam and jetsam of Dorsey's twisted
A never-before-published Serge Storms short story that places the iconic antihero in one of Florida's oldest (and most remote) little towns.
A classic travel feature in London's The Guardian detailing how you can explore Florida's most offbeat hidden corners like a true native. It seems Serge's reputation has spread across the pond!
An exclusive teaser chapter from January 2014's Tiger Shrimp Tango, the next installment in the never-ending adventures of Serge Storms.
Tim Dorsey was born in Indiana, moved to Florida at the age of 1, and grew up in a small town about an hour north of Miami called Riviera Beach. He graduated from Auburn University in 1983. While at Auburn, he was editor of the student newspaper, The Plainsman.
From 1983 to 1987, he was a police and courts reporter for The Alabama Journal, the now-defunct evening newspaper in Montgomery. He joined The Tampa Tribune in 1987 as a general assignment reporter. He also worked as a political reporter in the Tribune’s Tallahassee bureau and a copy desk editor. From 1994 to 1999, he was the Tribune’s night metro editor. He left the paper in August 1999 to write full time.
I'd have to say I really expected more. This appears to be just a sample or preview and there's not much to it. Very disappointing. I typically don't bother downloading samples or preview copies for this very reason. What there WAS was entertaining enough, but if it had clearly said it was only a sample, I wouldn't have wasted my time. I'm just glad it was free. I would have felt seriously ripped off if I had paid for it
A good but short story and a travel article written for the British newspaper The Guardian make up half of this book, and an excerpt from Tiger Shrimp Tango (due out in January 2014) make up the other half. Tiger Shrimp Tango sounds like a fun romp from the prologue and first chapter excerpted here.
The adventures of Serge and his adaptation to the Florida scene is refreshing to me being I am from Florida. Dorsey's style of writing is not predictable which is refreshing. This was a good little short story but I do like the series of books and the ever changing methods of demise Serge comes up with.
This is not a "Book". It is a 250 page short story.
Beware! This isn't a real Book. It's a cute short story, so keep that in mind. I got this to keep me busy for a weekend and I read it in 3 hours! Typical Dorsey/Serge. Wreak havoc on unsuspecting Florida visitors. Good but SHORT.
Fortunately I read another book from this serious before, so I knew to expect the unexpected from Serge Storms. I enjoyed "exploring" Paynes Prairie, FL. Even better was the included article that the author wrote about touring Florida for visitors from London.
Basically this is a short story,a flippant Florida guide book and a teaser for Dorsey's new book Tiger Shrimp Tango. I'm only disappointed that it didn't last longer.
This is a collection of other “debris” from Tim Dorsey. A talented and funny guy with Florida the usual target. The first story was Dorsey funny and there was a sample of excellent writing on “touring” Florida (albeit, Miami and south) However, as excerpts and samples this is not a coherent set more a random set of crazy happenings. Each story is in and of itself OK but as packaged here a disjointed set. That, said, of course, it was Prime “free” and helps sell Dorsey’s work.
Does this short story seem familiar? Maybe because this is actually two chapters from the subsequent book Shark Skin Suite. The material is amusing but nothing new here for those who read all the books. If you are interested in the author, this is an ok introduction but there are better. I would recommend a sample of one of the earlier works over this.
The best description of Florida geology courtesy of Serge...
"Miocene epoch remnants of limestone basins collapsing in sinkholes to the Floridan Aquifer, creating an insane irrigation and drainage system for a thriving balance of ecological synergy between swamp and arid scrub. How can you not get a boner?”
This book is actually two stories about Florida. Since I moved here not so long ago it piqued my interest. The stories were good but there just wasn't enough of them.
This is a cheap and relatively painless way to get a taste of what one can expect from a full length size of one of his books. Hiaasen is to blame for spawning such wannabes.
Finished reading " Tropical Warning " by Tim Dorsey. This was very short, basically a short story with everyone's favorite spree killer, Serge and his druggie, boozy sidekick Coleman. Then it is a small essay responding to what to do when you get to Florida to get a Serge like experience
to Florida. Based on the Serge Storm books, Dorsey gives you a quick 3 day indoctrination to about a dozen stops. And he is right; you need to rent a red convertible.
This very short story was a bizarre one, perfect for a story about Florida. It had great imagery and some ideas where to visit in the state. But it was very political too and I didn’t think that was necessary. The tips of visiting Florida were great.
You can knock this out in about 30 min. Seems like a scene that just got left on the editor's floor at some point. I did enjoy Dorsey's travel recommendations for Florida!
I didn’t realize this was a short story in the middle of a series when I downloaded it. It probably would have been better and made more sense if I had read any of the previous books in the series.
A funny little taste of a story but not enough to make me read other Serge Storms stories, I don't think. And yes, it is probably odd that I haven't read others but read this. Oh well.
