A New York Times & USA Today Best Seller
"He was my darkness and I was his light. We couldn't exist without each other."
For me, life was simple. I went to school and studied. I spent time with my friends and stayed out of trouble. I didn't drink or swear and I only dated gentlemen. I was the typical good girl with a bright future. My world seemed perfect.
But that was about to change.
Ryder Delaney was the one imperfection in my life. He was the bad boy, the black sheep, the one your mother always warned you about. He had only one hard-and-fast rule - Don't fall in love.
But some rules were meant to be broken.
We were best friends, inseparable since childhood despite our differences. I knew the real man hiding behind the tattoos and bad attitude. He knew all my secrets and dreams. But he didn't know there was one thing I wanted and couldn't have...him.
But sometimes Fate has a way of intervening. Soon our world collapsed. War erupted. Darkness prevailed. Alone and on the run, our only goal was to survive and to ignore the feelings we had for each other. But love is powerful...
and so is the darkness.

Nope Nope Nope

description

Maddie is a nursing student and Ryder is the local manwhore/bad ass. They have been best friends for fifteen years. When they run into each other at a local bar during a hometown visit she finds out Ryder has decided to enlist in the military and wants to spend his last couple days staying with Maddie at her apartment by her school.

Things are pretty normal, well not really it seems that The United States of America is on the verge of war against terrorist countries. Maddie is dating a guy name Ben and is a virgin.

Ryder is total alpha about her and saves her from a horrific event. Ryder puts the moves on her which confuses her because she doesn’t want to be another conquest for him but she too has feelings other than friendship. Truthfully, these two being friends for fifteen years doesn’t work for me they have no inside jokes, fun stories or anything!

Okay so back to this story, Maddie gives her “v”card to Ryder and here’s what he says before:

”Years, Maddie,” he said, huskily. “I’ve wanted you for years.”

And here’s what he says after:

”Shit, Maddie. What do you want me to do? Marry you? Put a ring on your finger? It was only sex.”

”We’re just friends, Maddie. That won’t change. But I told you before, I don’t do relationships and I don’t have girlfriends.”

Okay so Ryder throws some crazy mixed signals but a reader can pretty much tell where the author is going with this romance. Ryder loves her but keeps pushing her away, been there done that as reader.

They are at a club the earth starts shaking and the whole country losses power and society has fallen apart. Ryder, Maddie, Eva and Brody head back to their family’s homes.

All the while Maddie is not worried about the state of our union but about her and Ryder’s relationship. GIVE ME A BREAK.

description

They are attacked, without transportation, hurt and on the verge of dehydration and this chick is worried about her love life????

The foursome finds their way back home. Maddie’s father is in bad shape their town has crumbled but Maddie is still stuck on her “maybe” relationship.

Then the ending…

description

I’m sorry, I’m out, I wish this cast of characters best of luck in the next book. Sadly, I’m not interested in the least on what will happen next.

**May contain spoilers**

Awful. Completely terrible. Months later it still makes me angry to think about.

...The plot was actually somewhat unique (although, Revolution anyone?). The descriptions of the whole electromagnetic pulse thing was good enough for me (not a physics/engineering/whatever-subject-that-is person). And then the nursing care stuff was relatively accurate (RN here), besides Maddie being an awful patient - (yay lets punch someone with my broken hand) but hey not all nurses are the best patients so - benefit of the doubt.

HOWEVER

I did not like this. And I really just hated the characters beyond words.

How I feel about Maddie:

I really just couldn't get over how she kept putting herself and everyone in danger time and time again. She never had any character growth. She was stubborn to a fault. She was whiny. She had absolutely NO common sense. I just can't stand a character like that. Also she was the typical cliched "21-year-old virgin" who was waiting for true love but then gave it up to her player best friend who treated her like a floozy as she knew he would. And her personality was weird. She was this quiet innocent thing one section and then she'd be like punching Ryder and acting stubborn about the dumbest things...

I'd just like to point out a few scenes.

I think it really started to hit home for me how much I hated her when she started complaining about breaking into an empty house. Um okay Maddie. Let's stop and reflect. You have no food, no water, no shelter, got robbed of your car and almost all your supplies, the house is empty, no electricity works, no cars work, there's pretty much no chance of the house owners being able to get back to their house, and you're most likely going to die if you just hang out or keep walking. But let's just keep walking because breaking into the house would be so wrong.

It's a violent world out there now - she witnessed it firsthand - UGH STOP BEING DUMB AND JUST GO INTO THE DAMN HOUSE.

Then we have when they have gotten back to Ryder's home and the guys hear that there is trouble in town and decide to go check it out. Maddie hears that they are going and decides that she has to go too. Um okay Maddie. Let's set the scene here. TROUBLE in town. VIOLENCE. WAR. And then Maddie. Who has a broken rib, broken fingers, is described as tiny and little, gets basically knocked down by the wind, and has proven multiple times that she causes danger to herself and everyone around her. Also she likes to ignore the warning signs even when she sees them. YEAH Maddie you can go with them into town, okay. NOT. And then when they tell her no, she throws a temper tantrum and decides that fine if she can't go with them she's going to go to her house instead, with her dad who is dying of a stroke (great protection system there).

I think I am starting to understand why Ryder is so violent. Because this girl is an idiot and DOES NOT LISTEN. Ryder's mom says no, she knows Ryder and the others will be mad, but oh well they have to go anyway.

And then we have the next scene. At the house, when the convicts show up. There was a fleeting moment where I thought, oh my, is she actually going to prove herself?!?! She thinks - I hear someone, oh no! ... OH WAIT! I'VE GOT A GUN TO PROTECT US!! And then......... nothing. Let me just stand here immobile while the bad guy comes up and grabs me, takes away my gun, and heads off into the bedroom to rape me. Hm. Okay then. I almost started to warm up to her. But no. I did however slightly enjoy the next scene when she slices him in the brachial artery and he bleeds out. Nursing props I suppose. I guess if she has no common sense at least she has an education.

Alrighty so later on she goes and gets herself pregnant (love how there was like no concern on the character's part about the fact they're now living in a world without medical care and whatnot). And then she and Ryder are fighting and she's acting like a 3 year old. "I'm not hungry, I'm not going to eat because you want me to eat!! WAHH!!" Um HI dummy. Okay listen. I get that you have some weird stubborn pride thing or something BS but um YOU'RE PREGNANT NOW. That means you feed a baby when you eat. That means STFU and stop being an idiot and trying to kill the child that already has a decreased risk of surviving in this wacky world as it is. OK? Nope not okay. Still have seen no character development out of her.

I fear for this child.

Okay so just one more scene on Maddie, because I haven't even touched Ryder yet. End of the book - knock on the door... DANGER DANGER, PEOPLE HOLDING HER BACK. Someone calls her name, there's a GUN at the door. She hears her name and JUMPS UP AND RUNS TOWARDS IT while everyone around her tries to hold her back. Stubborn and dumbly she ends up staring down the barrel of a gun. MADDIE YOU IDIOT. YOU ARE PREGNANT NOW. THAT MEANS YOU NEED TO STOP DOING STUPID THINGS AND LISTEN TO THE OTHER MUCH SMARTER PEOPLE AROUND YOU THAT ACTUALLY HAVE A SURVIVAL INSTINCT AND COMMON SENSE.

UGH. I am SO done with her. I am getting angry again just talking about it. On to Ryder...

---

Ryder Ryder Ryder. I don't understand books like this where it's okay for the main male character to be completely absurdly violent with everyone around them. He scares off everyone who even looks at Maddie, and then he looks at Maddie himself and scares her away from him. It's like UM who would ever go near the guy in the first place? And how is he not in jail?? He physically fights with random guys in bars, with Maddie's boyfriend, with his brother, with other random strangers, etc... etc... There absolutely IS such a thing as TOO MUCH VIOLENCE. He needs some serious anger management classes.

And he is the ULTIMATE cliche. Like c'mon seriously, tribal tattoos (um why? Is he in a tribe? Is this at all relevant to the story? Nope), complete womanizer, but in love with the best friend (in denial, of course), obviously like the best looking guy ever, typical cliche crap. Blah blah blah. Like, why is this even remotely attractive? If I met someone like him I'd run in the other direction. No thank you.

But seriously. The violence is out of control. I'll admit it starts to come in handy when the whole apocalypse thing happens, but considering how it was present way before that and then during it as well at times it didn't need to be.. UGH I don't understand why there are so many good reviews for this book. I NEVER get this passionate and write reviews like this, but this book just made me SO ANGRY. I HAD to get it all out so I could move on.

Will not be reading the sequel. I honestly couldn't care less if all of the characters died. Particularly Maddie, she kinda deserves it with all the dumb things she keeps doing. She brings danger to all of them and they'd be safer without her around.

"He was my darkness and I was his light.
We couldn't exist without each other."

description

Maddie & Ryder two young kids, friends since childhood, deal with their feelings for each other, their shortcomings, war, heart break and the freaking Apocalypse, in this confusing but also strangely exciting novel by Paige Weaver. Hard to put down, frustrating but in my opinion, a really good story that just has too much in its plate.

First and above all, this is a love story.

description

Maddie, a nursing student, has been in love with her childhood friend Ryder since forever. Despaired that he won't ever feel the same she is in another relationship and try to live her life. I liked her spark, sense of loyalty and sensibility. Sometimes it seems as though she suffers in silence and patiently waiting for Ryder to pull his head out of his ass for a minute and admit what is obvious from page 1. They belong together.

description

Ryder is a stubborn, frustrating, hard-headed, love to hate male. Man whore, bad boy, tattooed and general bad ass, he feels inadequate of love and of Maddie. He think she deserves someone better than him. He can't help though, all the possessive and protective feelings he has toward her. He lives to take care of Maddie, but knowing he can't resist her for long, he decides to join the Army and even after sleeping together, he keeps pushing her away.

“I fuck up all the time, Maddie. I don’t want to drag you down with me.”

description

Stupid decision upon stupid decision, he keeps screwing up and regretting it. Running hot and cold, I think his insecurities really got old after a while and I just want to slap the shit out of him...

description

description

And this where the story, went post apocalyptic on us...

description

This is also the point, where the story lost me and picked my interest at the same time. Somewhere in the middle, it turned out more. Terrorists attacked USA and all the power went off. It's the survival of the fittest and this when the book became a cross between the TV series, Revolution and The Hunger Games.

description

Along with another couple, Maddie and Ryder must make a long journey to travel back home and to a possible sanctuary; fighting criminals, nature, themselves and each other in the way. Dealing with feelings, stubbornness, heartbreak and above all love, the trickiest feeling of all...

"You see me for who I am, Maddie. Not my ghosts. Not my bad habits. Not my past. Just me. You’ve always seen just me.”

description

Overall, this a book I enjoyed but can't say I loved. But it was a really great effort and I'm certainly intrigued enough to read the second. Maddie deserves a happily ever after and Ryder... well Ryder has to pull his shit together!

“After sleeping with you, I vowed not to touch you again but when I thought I lost you tonight…my world collapsed,” he said, his voice husky. “All I wanted was to be able to kiss you one more time. And I did but I’m greedy. I want more.”

Lyrics by Gavin Rossdale •Love Remains the Same•❤

A thousand times I’ve seen you standing
Gravity like a lunar landing
Make me want to run till I find you
I shut the world away from here
Drift to you, you’re all I hear
Everything we know fades to black

Half the time the world is ending
Truth is I am done pretending

I never thought that I had anymore to give
Pushing me so far
Here I am without you
Drink to all that we have lost
Mistakes we have made
Everything will change
But love remains the same

OKKKKKKKK......once again I found myself reading outside my normal box....this book fulfilled my challenge of reading a book of revolution/dystopia/apocalypse..... well alrighty then here goes nuttin!

The first part of this book I was in book butterfly heaven !!! my insides were gooey mush It literally played out like a normal NA book. Ryder and Maddie were childhood best friends and next door neighbors in their remote Texas town. Maddie has always been in love with Ryder but he was placed firmly in her friend-zone because he was breathtaking and gorgeous and dangerous ~ All the ingredients for a typical man-whore. She watched him date girl after girl and spent many nights wishing it was her that he loved. She's 21 years old now, she's a virgin, she loves the bad boy leaving on a tour of duty.....*greedy me says BRING IT ON......

I'M ENLISTING IN THE ARMY .......but before I sign up, there is one thing that I want to do. ~ Ryder ....fess up something you want to do or SOMEONE you want to do ......come on now son!❤

So while I was off in lust-heaven.....all HELL BROKE LOOSE !!! just like that!

Next thing you know ...VISIONS OF ...THIS

Busted up my ❤ in-the-making-happily-ever-after lots of visions of .....THIS

and

The remainder of the book was a story of surviving. Protecting whats yours. It was a combination of the Hunger Games and Divergent ( it was way steamyyyy though ) and some creep factors like in Revolution and the Walking Dead which is sooooooooooo not my thanggggg but I am forced to get ready for this "apocalypse" my husband and kids swear is gonna happen tomorrow. Will I read book 2 "Promise me Light" ? HELL Yes, of course....I must know!! . This is still a good love story and like with all love stories....I'm committed til the end of their happily-ever-after.

No matter what❤❤❤❤❤

✮ ✮ ✮ ✮ 5 HOT ALPHA MALE STARS ✮ ✮ ✮ ✮

Promise Me Darkness, was a super steamy, end of the world love story! I found it to be extremely unique in the sense that every other dystopian out there is focused more on the end of the world, and not the romance. The romance is the main focus of this story, of Ryder & Maddie's love for one another and the lengths they'll go to ensure each-others safety. Promise Me Darkness was filled with everything that I want in a romance: love, alpha-male, jealous alpha male, possessive alpha male, tattooed alpha male...okay who am I kidding, Ryder stole the story!!

~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.

Fate has a way of intervening. Soon their world collapsed. War erupted. Darkness prevailed. Alone and on the run, Maddie and Ryder's only goal was to survive and to ignore the feelings they have for each other. But their love is powerful...and so is the darkness that threatens to consume them...

Maddie

"You make me weak Maddie, so damn weak" ~Ryder

Ryder

"Ryder Delaney was a legend. Women couldn't keep their hands off him and the men were scared to death of him. He was good looking and dangerous. A little bit bad and a whole lot sexy. ~Maddie

Maddie and Ryder were childhood best friends and next door neighbors in the middle of nowhere Texas. Maddie is safe. She doesn't take risks or do daring things. She plays by the rules. That's why Ryder doesn't know she's in love with him...she's never had the courage to tell him. Not mention he's a total man whore who refuses to fall in love. Ryder might not have much of a choice to deny his feelings however, when foreign countries start attacking the United States, forcing Maddie and Ryder to stick together to survive.

"What happened to we can't do this again?" he murmured against my mouth. I managed to get an answer out despite his hands slowly trailing up my my back. "It's just a kiss Ryder". "It's never just a kiss with you, Maddie. It's so much more."

I loved loved loved this book! I can't wait to read the sequel. At first , I wasn't feeling it, but I stuck it out and it was so worth it! I love anything dystopian so this was right up my alley, not to mention Ryder is a total alpha-male to the EXTREME. I suggest anyone who loves a tattooed alpha male pick this one up!!

"You're all I need and want. Just you. Now and always." ~Ryder

***I would recommend this novel to others***

Huh??

Huh?

Hmm.....I'm not even sure what to say here. I'm kind of stumped. And a little confused. Maybe even a little disappointed. I guess I went in to the book thinking it was going to be one thing and it ended up being something completely different.

Things start off normal enough. Ryder and Maddie have been BFFs since they were kids. Ryder has decided he is going to enlist in the Army and goes to stay with Maddie for a week. During this time, terrorist threats are high. Ryder and Maddie end up having sex and the next night while at a club the ground starts shaking and the world is plunged in to darkness....

Yes, that's what I said. Darkness. Now I am reading a completely different book. I mean completely different. And not in a good way unfortunately. Apparently there's been a terrorist attack so it's every man for himself. The rest of the book is their journey home and surviving during this attack.

I guess you could say the underlying story is a romance--between Ryder and Maddie. Maddie has always been in love with Ryder. And we can all tell that Ryder is in love with Maddie but he frustratingly fights it tooth and nail the ENTIRE book. And that got old really fast. The back and forth was terrible.

Of course the book wouldn't be complete without a Ryder and Maddie finally admit their feelings for each other and the book ends with Ryder and family leaving to go save some friends who have been captured by terrorists. I swear I feel like I'm in the twilight zone....

This was honestly one of the best books I have read this year. I loved Ryder although at times his confusing behaviour was quite annoying he just kept giving conflicting messages that just wound me up a bit too. Maddie was sweet but sometimes her needy behaviour towards Ryder was just too much I understand about love and lust but just wish her character was a bit stronger and she wasn't so ruled by her physical reaction towards Ryder. I think the plot was great and the writing style really good. I can't wait for the sequel hopefully we will get Ryders pov as I would love to understand his feelings about Maddie.

[Reto 2017, Libro #10: Chico malo]

Fuck me!!! When is the next book coming out?????? MUST.HAVE.MORE!

Okay, I took a day to read something for myself. I picked PROMISE ME DARKNESS by Author Paige Weaver. I really had no idea what to expect with this book, but:
HOLYFUCKINGBADBOYBOOKBOYFRIENDSEXYMOTHERFUCKER!!!!
I absolutely LOVE this book! ♥ ♥ ♥
Please do not let the synopsis throw you. I went into this thinking it was going to be another sweet easy read about college love. FUCK NO!!! I was blindsided and smacked right upside the head. There is no easy about this, it really is a dark and kind of twisted story, but worth every damn page turning moment.

Maddie and Ryder have been best friends since early childhood having grown up as neighbors.

Maddie has always been secretly in love with her best friend who also happens to be the biggest man-whore she knows. Ryder is finished with college and back home. Maddie is home for summer break before going back to nursing school. One night, Ryder gives Maddie some news and asks her if he can come stay with her and her roommate Eva for a few days when they go back to campus.
Talk about sexual tension!!! Yes!!! it's everywhere!

Maddie has a bad run in with her boyfriend, yes she has a boyfriend, Ben, and Ryder is there to play hero. Now Maddie is starting to feel confused. But really, when you read this book you'll understand why at times her confusion is warranted.

If I wasn't already such a huge fan of Ryder at this point, I may have wanted to bitch slap him. Okay, I still did at times want to, but I really wanted to knock some sense into both he and Maddie.

And then, CHAOS!!!

Four 20 something's start a journey that should only take mere hours but turns into days. At this point in the book, I'm beyond freaking out. I've got heart palpitations, my gut is clenching and my eyes are starting to tear up from the most random occurrences.

After reaching their destination, heart ache ensues in two different forms for Maddie. The daily struggles in the "new world" are definitely a trial.

I can without a doubt say that this book is gritty, intense and full of sexual angst/tension and at times heartbreaking. The darkness surrounding this story is something that could very well happen and it eludes to that nerve wracking fear that would occur if it became a reality.
Right away I almost felt like I was in the show Revolution and I loved it! Please don't let that thought scare you, it's only based on how I felt the story line go, but it quickly changed and I was right along with Maddie on her journey.

My cast:

Ryder

Solid read!!
I'm even tempted to read book two!
There were some things that were questionable mainly regarding the villans and how did they found them & heroine was very irritating & some things like her inner monologue and relationship with the hero were running in circles. He was running hot and cold all the time.

So I don't know what book all of the negative reviewers read but it couldn't have been this one. This story was actually refreshing not like all the others that are all high power male/ female sex driven story lines.
Scary part is that the theory in this story is probably true. I'm seriously thinking that I may want to stock more canned goods in the house.
But back to the story...Maddie yes was somewhat of a pushover and a prisoner to her love for Ryder but she had her strengths and didn't give up even in her two significant life threatening situations in the book. Ryder was super protective with a fierceness you didn't want to even test. Yes for whatever reason his lack of wanting to state his obvious love for Maddie was a bit frustrating, but it wouldn't be a story if he gave into easily now would it be. I am a bit annoyed that Eva & Brody separated from them, but again then where would the second book go....I loved Eva by the way, Maddie & her friendship was endearing and I hope all works out in the second book. So when will it be coming out??????

Wow, having not read the synopsis but diving straight in this book was not what I expected at all. I was fully prepared for a feel good best friends falling in love type book with the typical drama that ensues, but this was so much more. Sure, we have that storyline in the mix, but that is in admist a war that has broken out. Instead of a book about daisies and sunshine, you get a scarily real depiction of what would happen if a war broke out in america, and it was every man for himself. The things people do to survive... this book gives you a haunting look into the lives of these four teenagers who have to face unimaginable hurdles through the texan sun to make it to safety. And even when you think everything will be okay, you realise the war has not ended this book is just the beginning!

I CAN NOT WAIT for the next book. With that epic cliffhanger ending, I need to know what happens! Great book, definitely recommend it to those who love romance, war and survival books!

ok wat da hell just happened!!!
i went in thinking i was getting me another healthy dose of bad-boy romance and BAM! i was right in middle of an apocalypse!!!

i kid u not
the book started off really incredible
tried and tested formula but it was really working for the book
by chapter 10, the love story was coming to a conclusive end
n i got really worried they wer gonna ruin a perfectly good story by dragging it n including some unnecessary love triangle
but in chap 12, BAM!!! just like that
things get sooo out of hand, it took me some time to comprehend wat was happening
and wen i finally began to get a grasp on things, i wasn't sure i was feelin it!
but then things picked up n it just got better n better
half way down i figured it was goin to be a series and that i will have to wait for book 2 to know how its gonna end
or maybe a book 3 even
and that did not sit well with me, coz i hate, HATE, waiting for the sequels
but at the the end of the day, none of it mattered
and i got just one reason for it

RYDER DELANEY!!!!!
it was sooo great to read an alpha male character after ssoooo loong!
I'l go as far as to say he was the BEST bad boy of the year so far!!!
love him. SO.MUCH!!
he reminds me so much of Daemon Black!
OH.SO.MUCH!

so yeah, give this book a shot
think of it as 'Beautiful Disaster' meets 'The Host'

EPIC!!!

ps: totally loving that cover! cant wait for the next cover release

This book was definitely not what I was expecting. I was expecting a swoony romance set against a post-apocalyptic warzone. Not quite! Instead we get an angsty romance which just happens to take place following an attack on the US which leaves everybody without power, and a few desperate people running around… occasionally. That may sound really negative, but I definitely don’t intend it to be, because although parts of this book are very familiar, the setting, and the challenges faced by the characters are actually really original.

It’s the story of Maddie, an innocent, somewhat naïve girl who is in love with her neighbour and childhood best friend, Ryder, who just happens to be a smoking hot, tattooed, manwhoring bad boy. Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. Oh, and did I forget to mention – she’s a virgin! Ding, ding, ding! All necessary NA boxes ticked.

But unlike other books with a similar set up, just when things start to get interesting between Maddie and Ryder, the US is attacked by terrorists, sparking what could be WWIII, and throwing the entire country into turmoil. Desperate to get home to their families, and with Maddie injured following a nightclub stampede, they set off with Maddie’s best friend Eva, and her boyfriend Brody to travel to their home town, along the way having to search for food, water and shelter in the sweltering heat of summer, and deal with violent bad guys, all while wading through the angst of their maybe/maybe not relationship.

And about that relationship... Holy effing hell. So. Freaking. Frustrating! And I feel the need to rant, so here it comes…

Obviously Maddie and Ryder are hot for each other, and there is a bit of hotness that goes on, which is very nice, but it all starts to go to hell when Ryder throws Maddie what is possibly the biggest cop-out in romance:

“I know you want it all. Love, a relationship. But I can’t give that to you. I won’t because I’ll just end up hurting you.”

Ugh! Seriously? And if that’s not enough, the boy throws off mixed messages like nothing else! One minute he’s all caring, protective, and alpha over her, and the next he’s pissed off and completely ignoring her. God, I wanted to punch him so hard!

And it’s not a one time thing, he’s up and down for the entire book. But it’s not just him. If Maddie stopped being such a sap and instead of wasting her time whining about how she’s only going to be friends with Ryder and actually confronted him, maybe she would have got some answers. It’s one of those books where you just want to grab the two main characters, smack their heads together and scream at them to TALK TO EACH OTHER, AND SORT YOUR SHIT OUT!!! But instead, Maddie (amidst her own TSTL moments that prove she is also in need of a punch) just stands by while Ryder is an ass and constantly pushes her away.

OK, rant over. And after all of that, I must confess that while I was supremely annoyed at his behaviour, I really want to love Ryder, and I do actually like him. He manages to balance just enough sweetness and what is obviously deep love for Maddie to have me clutching my heart, before he goes and says something that makes him a total douche.

Although, I am happy to report that he does get his act together, and in a very late reprieve, finally gets in touch with his feelings, and THEN we get the swoon.

“You’re all I need and want. Just you. Now and always.”

“I’m yours, Maddie and I’ll love you for the rest of my life”

Awwwwwwww... just in time to win my heart!

Despite all of the angst, and my constant eye rolling, there is something about this book that sucked me in. I care about these characters, I want them be together, I was interested the entire way through the book, and I’m desperate to find out what happens next in the story. There are some very intriguing story threads to be played out, plus the threat of the war getting closer to them. I’m excited for the big conclusion.

3.5 frustrating, but full of potential for a big ending, stars.

75% into this book, I decided the only reasonable thing to do was quit it before I ended up punching my computer. The plot was ruined by the most annoying characters ever. You know, the kind of characters you imagine killing every chapter.
The idea was actually a good one. I think is only the second book I've read with a similar plot (which nowadays is nearly a miracle). However, the stupidity of the characters ruined it for me (and that before knowing there was going to be a second book).

The plot is quite straightforward: 4 friends find themselves needing to get home from the university after USA has suffered an attack which has put down, electricity, communications... (Does NBC's Revolution ring a bell?).

The problem is that we spend the first 70% of this book nearly alone with 4 characters that would drive any sane person to death. Let's start with our hero and heroine:

Maddie, our heroine is our usual new adult book stereotype heroine. You know, 21, VIRGIN, supposedly clever (several new adult books definitely have me thinking that intelligence is not a requirement to get into university anymore) and IN LOVE WITH A MANWHORE.
Maddie is sometimes a pushover, sometimes stubborn, but 100% of the times she is just plain STUPID.

First we have her relationship with Ryder. Friends since kids, she acts deeply surprised and offended because after sleeping with her Ryder says he doesn't want something serious with her. WTF is she surprised or annoyed by that? She knows this guy, she slept with him when it was pretty clear by his actions and comments he wasn't thinking about happily ever after. So girl give us a rest!
But even worse was that afterwards we have to listen to her inner dialogue constantly going something like this: " Wow, Ryder is so sexy and every time we get close (or humping each other) I get so hot, but No, NO! He doesn't love me, so we can't have anything...oohhh, but he gets me so hot every time he looks at me....ohhhh...." This goes forever!!!!!

Secondly, this girl is too stupid to live . She goes into a fit because after 2 days of walking on the road (by her and her whinny friend's fault btw), they decide to break and enter into an abandoned house. For F*cks shake the house is abandoned, you have no food, no water and still we have to hear you complaining? With a broken rib and hand they tell you to hide yourself because there could be danger, but hell no...no way you are doing that because even though your presence could be potentially dangerous if taken as hostage you are not going to let anyone put you aside? ... Just 2 examples, but trust me I could write and write with more example.

Hunter is the 24 ass#ole- manw#ore that sometimes acts like a psychopath and sometimes like Maddie's puppy. If there was a time to be a controlling ass#ole is when you have to try and get home 3 of the most dumb people ever...But noooooo....we get the psychopath every time someone looks at Maddie and the puppy every time she puts herself and everyone else in danger.

Eva, the friend from hell . If you are still reading this overly large review, after reading my description of Maddie you can imagine what to expect of her best friend. Yeah...another too stupid to live person, who can even decide from one chapter to the other whether Maddie should hook up with Ryder. Even worse by that is the scene where they lost the car they were driving because the stupid girl decides to play Mother Theresa in what is obviously a trap! But even worse is that about a chapter later, she gets mad for hiding instead of asking a ride from 4 drunk men. Can you be more stupid? Wtf do you think is going to happen if you stop that car? I don't know...but being robbed and molested a chapter before, you could maybe imagine it! Call me crazy!!

This has gone too long so I won't even bother you talking about the 4th member of the expedition. Because, really do you really need to know more?

What happens when you pick up a book almost completely blind of it's premise but only know the genre? Well, let me tell ya, you get a huge smile on your face from utter delight because, uh, huh...it was THAT great!

I'm a sucker for good writing, first and foremost. If a story is in anyway cliche' or the same ole, same ole of "insta-love" and/or "insta-lust", with regurgitated phrases like: "He was the most beautiful man I had ever seen" or "He smelled of leather and musk", I'm out before the second chapter begins. Not to mention, having to seriously rest my overly rolled eye balls. Oh, but that's so not the case with this novel. (Thank God.) The incredibly easy flow and descriptive way Weaver tells her dystopian romance with cleverness and wit, along with a swoon-worthy alpha-male named, "Ryder"...I mean, seriously, I was a goner.

Let's face it y'all, there's been an explosion of new indie authors uploading to Amazon on a minute by minute basis. Only trouble is, the market is so over saturated with so many choices, it's beyond the proverbial "needle in a haystack" to find the really good ones. And that's where I come in, because reviews are just about the only way a reader can gage what's worth their sacred "one-click" anymore. Now, I must state the fact that Ms. Weaver certainly doesn't need my praise or my pimping because she's already experienced huge success with all her books. I'm merely the total idiot who, until now, completely missed the freaking boat. *face palm*

I will warn you, there is a cliffhanger at the end and if I'm being completely honest, I'm not the biggest fan of those - but if this tells you anything, I SIMPLY DON'T CARE! I'm happy and pretty darn excited to one-cllick the next installment (Promise Me Light) just as soon as I hit save.

You knows those books that suck you in from the beginning? The ones that you just cannot put down? Well, Promise me Darkness was one of those books for me.

Maddie is a 21 year old nurse student who's been best friends with bad boy Ryder for 15 years, despite their different ways of life. Maddie is the complete opposite of Ryder, the typical good girl, goes to school and studies, doesn't drink or smoke and stays out of trouble and only dates gentlemen. But with everything in her life going to the way she wants it too there is still one thing Maddie wants but can't have, and that's Ryder.
Ryder, well, he's a legend. The women can't keeps there hands off him and the men are scored to death of him. Ryder has one rule. Don't fall in love.

Was this a romance? Yes, definitely. But this book was so much more.. Love, friendships, family and i felt all of these emotions along with struggle and survival when the unthinkable happens.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it was a fantastic, beautiful and emotional read and I am very much looking forward to read the sequel 'Promise me Light'

I absolutely loved this book. I figured it was gonna be your average childhood love story. Girl goes off to college & then the stubborn sexy guy from her childhood finally comes to his senses. But NO!! That's not at all what happens. This book surprised me & took a totally different turn that I never saw coming. The direction the author took was so refreshing. Yes, of course you still have the gorgeous, tattooed, stubborn, sexy guy. Wouldn't be a great book without him. At times I would get so frustrated with him but just like Maddie, I loved him so much! So many other people who reviewed this book complained that Maddie wasn't strong enough & I guess was lacking that "girl power". But I disagree. Several times in this book she fought hard. She even fought with the the one guys she loves. I loved everything about this book. There is a cliffhanger in the end but not a huge one that leaves you very ticked off when the book ends. It's just enough to really tease you & wanting so badly to read the next book. Can't wait!! :)

I am left speechless over this book , I am literally at a loss searching my mind for just the rights words to express how well written this book is . This book needs to be a movie hands down it is that good. After reading this I felt like crocodile dundee when he said "that's not a knife , this is a knife !" Only I'm saying "That's not a book , THIS IS A BOOK !" This had everyhing you want in a book characters that were well put together , you can relate with ease . This suspense and drama with what will happen next betweem Ryder and Maddie in the middle of all this terror - And it makes you think , really think what if something like this were to take place on American soil that only made me relate to them so much more because in thinking that and how we all are really so dependent on electricity and electronic forms of communication it is beyond terrifying - This is a must read ! And the price is a steal at only $0.99 are you kidding !! I have bought and paid good money for books and felt robbed very few make me feel as if I stole from the authour , this one is being sold far below it's value - Can't wait for the next book !!!

I'm not going to do a review because I didn't finish it but I am gonna say why I didn't finish it. First off we are beat in the face with "we are friends" about every page. Yes I fucking get it y'all are friends move the fuck on. Omg I can't even remember her name and I just read it. Well whatever her name is she is annoying. From start to 62% where I finished she was just fucking stupid. Immature and a complete fucking child about everything. IT'S THE END OF THE FUCKING WORLD YOU DUMB BITCH. SHUT THE FUCK UP AND LET THE MAN LEAD YOUR DUMB ASS FUCKING HOME!! So yeah. The time that I read she kept doing stupid shit and getting them in trouble. I finally got fed up and said fuck it I quit. And it takes a lot to make me quit. I mean I read Beautifully Damaged and that was like shoving a hot poker in my eye repeatedly.

Turned out I enjoyed this one! Not the kind of story I was expecting but that's fine. But why gave us ending like that though? Not a fan of cliffhanger ending! But whatever, I hope on the next book will give more happiness to Maddie and Ryder!

P.S: Happy New Year to my lovely ladies here! I'm sorry I don't know how to make an update on my profile using my phone. I wish you all nothing but the best in 2015! And hopefully many good books to read. XO

Jointly reviewed on: http://totallybookedblog.com/2013/04/...

Jenny: Okay, this is going to be a difficult review. This book was not what I expected at all. It felt like two books in one to me.. I enjoyed the first half but the second part; I have to say lost me. On that note though….I had to find out what happened! I couldn’t put it down and I was drawn to finishing this book. That probably makes no sense Gitte, but I hope you know what I mean.

Gitte: I know exactly what you mean Jenny. I really enjoyed the first half of the story and I have to say I assumed it was going down one path then suddenly THAT happened and it took a completely unexpected route that floored me, I actually stopped reading and thought, umm what?! I had no idea what was going on or what I was reading; but I kept on because I needed to find out just where it was going and what would happen to our main characters.

Jenny: We have Maddie and Ryder. Best friends since childhood. Ryder is the tart about town – putting it about to every girl possible. Maddie is his virginal bff. Maddie has always had strong feelings for Ryder and they have not diminished despite the separation they have experience with Maddie being away at College. Even though he frustrated me at times, I was drawn to Ryder….how could you not love this tattooed bad boy! But….I had issues with him. This guy went back and forth in his emotions with Maddie so much, I wanted to slap him and his indecisiveness gave me whiplash.

Their friendship took a change and both sensed their relationship was going to another level. Feelings were being explored between the two.

“We’ve always teased each other but this was different. Underneath the flirting lurked something real. Something dangerous. And I wasn’t sure if I could resist it.” - Maddie

I was so annoyed with Ryder’s actions after Maggie had given herself to him. I got that he had a “never fall in love” rule but really?? Ryder giving her the “we’re just friends” speech after she entrusts him with something so special, well, I would have sent him on his bike! His actions and words just didn’t gel. He would say one thing and do another. I’m not sure how Maddie put up with him.

“My heart felt like it was breaking into a million pieces. Pieces that rested in the palm of his hand, easily crushed and easily forgotten” - Maddie.

You always knew deep down he had intense feelings for her but he just messed her about way too much for my liking.

Gitte: So yes, Maddie, I have to say I initially thought oh no the twenty something magical virginal vagina card has been pulled again, my pet peeve if I have to be honest, why is it that virgins are currently the best thing since sliced bread in fiction? Anyway, she was straight and narrow, wanted the khaki wearing straight laced man with manners, no tattoos in sight and driving a BMW. Yet she has always harboured strong feelings of lust and love for her best friend Ryder who is the exact opposite of what she ultimately wants. Ryder is a sexy, heavily tattooed bad arse player. He is a legend with women because of his dangerous attitude and his wild and crazy behaviour. I loved the friendship these two have and as I was reading I was willing them to drop the game they both played and just get together already. Seriously, I agree Jenny, Ryder fought his love for Maggie through the entire story with poor Maggie not knowing where to turn or what was going on. At one stage I thought, enough, I have had enough it’s too much and no person would honestly put up with being treated the way Maggie was by Ryder. It was so frustrating!

“…if we tried to make this work, I would just screw it up like I do everything else. Everything I touch turns to crap, Maddie. I can’t let that happen to us. No matter how much I want you, I’m not willing to lose you.” – Ryder

However, when it was good…it was good.

“Ryder was always saving the day. Even my childhood was filled with him rescuing me. My own personal superhero.” – Maddie

“You mean everything to me! You always have!” – Ryder

Jenny: Yep, he was frustrating alright! This book took THAT dramatic twist at about 40% – to say we did not see it coming is an understatement hey Gitte? This became like a whole other book and whilst apocalyptic (do me a huge favor…if you ever get to meet Gitte…ask her to say that word *wink wink*) books aren’t my thing I felt the author did a good job of keeping me interested until the end because I did think it was going to lose me completely but it didn’t, though I have to admit I wasn’t completely invested in the story.

The story was well thought out, there was certainly some tense, heart pounding moments throughout and whilst it did take a backseat to the rest of the story unfolding, the underlying love story kept my interest. The change in story forces Ryder to face his feelings whilst dealing with some pretty harrowing situations. We see how human nature can turn evil in the blink of an eye.

“With one touch, he took away my fear and left desire in its place” - Maddie

No, this wasn’t my sort of story but that does not detract at all what a great job the author did, it was purely a personal thing. Fans of this type of romance/suspense with apocalyptic undertones will devour this one.

Gitte: Absolutely Jenny, to say we were gobsmacked is an understatement. The sudden intense twist in this story comes completely out of left field side-lining Maggie and Ryder’s story, pushing it to the background really. It became about THAT rather than them. Sure, their story simmered and would rear its head and come to blows every so often but this story became mostly about survival in a world where the reality of the evil one human being can inflict on another is explored.

I have to say that this story was really well written, the Author did a great job at keeping me interested and reading despite not being completely convinced that this type of book was for me. My emotions were genuine and I always say, if an Author makes me feel and experiences what the characters are going through then I know the writing is class!

“You need to know that I would die for you Maddie….you are my everything…” - Ryder

Here goes my mini review (full one to come later on the blog:)

Ok, so I started this book like I start most, having no clue what I'm going to encounter and to my relief I was SO happy with this one.

It is a romance, yes, but it is so much more than that! It's about friendships, family, love, struggle and survival in a crumbling society. This book was like a movie in my head, I not only saw it but I lived and breathed the characters.

The drama surrounding the characters is Scary to think about it because it could happen in real life.

Ryder not only has to struggle with his demons and insecurities but face the challenge of a changing life in a blink of an eye. Become a provider in times of crises and feel worthy of feelings he struggles with.

Maddie's life like everyones else's has been torn upside down and she has to cope and come to terms with everything that is happening juggle a life that was not in her or no one's plans amongst coping with feeling for Ryder and his mixed signals.

I Truly Enjoyed this story and I NEED 'Promise Me Light' Like NOW!

AWESOME READ!

***3 Mediocre Stars!!***

What can I say that hasn’t already been said?
This book had a lot of potential to be 5 star worthy.

Unfortunately, Maddie annoyed the crap out of me and Ryder was just so wishy washy, losing me in the process. One minute Ryder is HOT for Maddie, and the next minute he’s being COLD, and distant. I swear his mood swings were giving me WHIPLASH.. Ryder would say sweet things to Maddie once in awhile but his actions would contradict him.. It was just to much at times.

I did however, LOVE the apocalyptic storyline, it had a unique twist that didn’t consist of a zombie infested world. It also had a good amount of sex scenes considering she was a VIRGIN..
And surprisingly enough, there were moments in the book were I was caught off guard or not expecting the new turn of events. Which that alone is an accomplishment. Looking forward to reading book 2, but trust me, I wont be rushing to purchase it when it releases...

WTF DID I JUST READ?

Is this author trying to insult my intelligence? Because I feel incredibly insulted right now. A little lesson for you guys: EMP's do not work the way it is portrayed in this book. Easy googling will tell you that much.
For one, an EMP would have had to be struck domestically because of America's missile's defense shield. And if it happened in the night as is portrayed in this book, then chances are there would be A LOT of cars working. Why? Because there would tons of cars in garages, and garages act like faraday cages, protecting the electronic devices therein from the dangers of EMP. (And no, it would not take down a plane and the ground would not shake).
Secondly, did this author glaze over the fact that power grids in cities are protected against EMP strikes? From an engineering point of view, there is more energy in bolts of lightening than in EMP blasts, yet they dont shut down cities because we have engineered them to withstand it.

description

The ignorance was frankly shocking in this story. It disturbed me, and had me facepalming ten million times.
The enemies are referred to as "terrorist countries" and never once have we EVER delved into what could possibly spark something this big. In the everyday world, you have to realize through easy research how countries negotiate and keep this world we live in turning, the possibility of ww3 is so unbelievably miniscule. Not just that, but this author brought up countries that would have no possible reason to feud with America, especially when they benefit so greatly by the consumerism of America (ex: China).

The heroine was another issue altogether. She was the most annoyingly dumb child-girl I've ever had to be in the head of. The internal dialogue in regards to Ryder were repetetive and pointless. Ryder isn't even a badass. So because he has tribal tattoos, gets drunk, f*cks blondes and fights a lot - that makes him a "bad boy"? He sounds more like a douche bag if you asked me. I know absolutely nothing about Ryder either. No idea what his aspirations are, what he likes or dislikes; all we read about is his struggle with Maddie. And everybody revolves around Maddie. We never ever hear much from anyone else. It's just Maddie, Maddie, Maddie. Fml.

And the idiot that she is, toward the end, made me want to hammer myself in the head repeatedly. *Spoiler ahead* What woman decides to just head to her house with her barely functioning father alone? I mean, the world's gone to shit, she's bumped into enough dangerous situations along the way, WTF would compel her to do this? Why not wait until Gavin came around or SOMETHING?! What a dumbass. Honestly. DUMB.ASS.

In fact, they were all dumbasses. We have a supposed survivalist man (Ryder's father) who doesn't even have a generator on standby (wow, great survivalism there, bud), and we have four idiots who decide to trek IN THE HEAT OF SUMMER'S DAY at the risk of f*cking heatstroke instead of traveling AT NIGHT when it's cool and there isn't an unforgiving star in the sky roasting you alive. I mean... that's common sense. Also, who in their right minds would sleep in an abandoned minivan in the middle of the road at night? I just... What the...

And lastly... The writing was awful. Do you want one fine example? Here it is, folks:
"The water was hot from sitting in the garage but it was wet."
It was wet, guys. It was wet. Wet. Water was wet and....

I thought this would be awesome. (Warning, minor spoilers and swearing, unless goodreads auto-censors?)

To be fair, this is a DNF for me.

Additionally, here I am breaking my rule about trashing other indie authors online. However, I'm doing this an exercise for myself. I enjoy determining what worked and what didn't work for me when I read a book. I use what I find to help me write better books. So I'm only writing this review because I want to explore what did work about the 40% of this book that I read, even though it had no effing right to work.

Okay, for starters, the book is a walking, talking lump of cliches, right? You've got the virgin 21 year old and the asshole boy toy who sleeps around.

Oh, but they're best friends from childhood, so that somehow makes it not some Glines/McGuire clone.

Hell, Abbi Glines writes better than this chick, and that is not saying much.

'Kay, so for some reason, though, it WORKS. Like, it's so stilted and the dialogue is awful and unrealistic and there are seven adverbs on every page and everyone apparently has a constant sore throat, because they are all talking hoarsely.

But the sexual tension--while utterly unrealistic--is powerful.

So what does the idiot author do?

She takes the ONLY thing she has going for her, the will-they/won't-they of Ryder and Maddie, and she has them fuck.

And then...

Oh, and then Ryder's like, "No, I don't want to date. I don't date girls. I'm the asshole playboy stereotype, remember?"

But it's obvious that he actually likes her and is just in denial.

Then the WORLD EXPLODES.

This was the part I had been hoping for. I was like, yay, there will be danger and tension and excitement.

But I found myself skimming, and I stopped reading, because I didn't care about the characters and Ryder and Maddie were practically together at that point, so I wasn't even curious about how the relationship would pan out.

How could the author have fixed this?

1-Real characters in a believable situation might have garnered my sympathy. Stereotypes? Eh. Let 'em die.

2-If you can't manage to make real people (and let's face it, some of the best stories out there feature cardboard cutout characters. I'm a Star Wars fan. I like horror movies. I watched Titanic. You can pull off a good story without great characters.) then, by all means, do not SCREW UP the one decent piece of tension you've got going for you.

Listen, would-be romance authors.

In a romance novel, they typically have sex AT THE END.

If they have sex earlier, their having sex needs to create MORE PROBLEMS.

NO TENSION=NO STORY

Blah.

A book about two people in danger, barely managing to stay alive, who also are attracted to each other, but won't give in to their attraction for some reason or other? That's a plot I NEVER get tired of.

They had sex too soon.
