AFTER READ:
Oh man, this was a painful thing to read. Aspen whined and minimized Maxon's character and feelings for the whole time up until the last few pages.
Hard to understand someone's point of view when all they want is the girl, not considering that maybe he's risking her life.

Maxon is the one for America not aspen. Aspen may say he loves her but if he truly loved her he wouldn't have dumbed her just because he was scared. And Maxon is madly deeply in love with America she is his world.

Please excuse this fangirl-is-angry-don't-mess-with-her rant.
I seriously don't know where to start with this novella. Honestly, it just made me VERY mad. First of all, everyone says "You're Team Maxon right?" Of course I am!! There is no Team Aspen. There's either Team Maxon or there's Team NOT Maxon. No one actually likes Aspen. He's just a self-centered guy who's cocky and arrogant and only cares about himself and his family. Throughout this book he always thinks that he's 100% correct about everything. And everyone in the palace fawning over him and saying what a bright star he is doesn't help shrink his huge ego any bit. He has rigid opinions on everything and refuses to be swayed. It's ridiculous. HE'S ridiculous. How America likes him or what she sees in him I will never know. Then again, America Singer isn't the brightest girl on the block. I despised her in "The Elite" and even more so in this novella. Aspen is badmouthing Maxon, and America does nothing!! She doesn't defend Maxon or tell Aspen that he's wrong about Maxon. She just agrees with whatever Aspen says and takes it like it's the freaking word of God. And Aspen calls Maxon an actor and says that he's actually a really bad person (takes one to know one), I was just thinking, I DON'T CARE WHAT YOU THINK ASPEN LEGER. I DON'T CARE. GET OFF THE BOOK'S PAGES AND GIVE ME MAXON!! And America keeps messing around with Aspen behind Maxon's back?! That is so low, and does she not remember what just happened to her friend Marlee?! Talk about inconsiderate and stupid and foolish. And Aspen, he claims that he loves her yet he's putting her in so much danger by pursuing her. If Aspen really loved her, he'd let her go. But he won't because he is a selfish adolescent who wants everything. If I hear Aspen call America "my girl" one more time I might just reach into the book and slap him so hard he sees stars. She is NOT your girl. You dumped her and now you want her back when she's suddenly all rich and high caste and famous?! Aspen is really naive and foolish if he can't see the sparks between America and Maxon. Stop. Pining. Over. America. I also love how Aspen talks about Maxon like he knows Maxon so well, like their best buds and that Aspen knows everything about Maxon. No he does not!! They haven't even spoken two words to each other!! I feel as though Kiera Cass has tried and failed to turn people over to Team Aspen, and she failed to make people think that Aspen's great, because he's not. Cass basically just threw Aspen at us and said "Hey!! Like him!! He's wonderful!! I just realized that I created the weakest love triangle in existence of any YA series so I'm gonna make it up to my readers now by giving the illusion of a strong love triangle since my series has nothing else to offer." Aspen's POV was so dull and boring, and I just hate him so much. I was begging for just one or two lines from my dearest Maxon. My brain can only take Aspen's stupidity and self-righteousness for so long.
Well I'd like to apologize for whatever I just wrote. I am fed up. *crosses arms and taps foot*

The Guard novella was... Well, it was just an okay read I guess. I get a bit bored when novella's repeat parts from previous books. And if I'm being honest Aspen's POV really didn't add that much to the story which is sad because I was looking most forward to his. I guess I was looking for something more and sadly this just didn't deliver. On the other hand, this was a very quick and easy read. And though I distaste repeated scenes (scenes from book 2) it was still nice getting a look into his thoughts and feelings and his desires. Aspens POV gives us insight into King Clarkson's nature, motivations, manipulative ways, and his cruelty. It was also nice getting to see the relationship's form between him and America's maids Anne, Mary and Lucy and the respect they have for him and the love they have for America. It was nice seeing Aspen's camaraderie with the other guards, especially with Avery and Tanner. Also, I enjoyed the couple scenes between Aspen and the old man who works in the stables. The old man gives some pretty good advice too :) My rating for this book has nothing to do with my liking or not liking Aspen. It's solely based on the content and the entertainment factor which was very low in my opinion. And... For the record, I have always loved Aspen ever since the first book! Not necessarily with America but because his dedication to America remains steadfast throughout EVERYTHING and he's caring, sweet and all around a wonderful person. Moving on to The Favorite :)

I was laughing the entire time I read this book not because it was funny, but because of what was going inside ass-pain's mind. He freaking thought that he was better than Maxon and America still loved him. Like I don't even know if I should hate him or pity him for his dumbness.
Now why did I rate it 2 stars? The one and only reason is because of the money he sent to Marlee's husband (whatever his name was) parents. I was shocked that he had some humanity left within him. People aim to do great things in life but the one and only aim of his life was protect hisfirst love teenage crush. Boy why don't you just move on? I was seriously hoping for him and America to get caught together even though I have read all the 5 books in the series.

Maxon and America are truly villains, and people like Aspen or Marlee deserved so much better than to be used and abused by people like them.
It’s actually insane how obvious it was that Aspen loved America a thousand times more than Maxon ever did. Aspen never doubts his affection or devotion to her, and he never wanted her to be someone she wasn’t. He was there for her from beginning to end, while Maxon was never more than the pompous arse who only cared about himself and his own needs.
Then again, America doesn’t deserve someone like Aspen anyway, so it’s good that he doesn’t end up with her.

• To Aspen,
You don’t deserve America. I know you sacrificed everything, taking risk just to see her even though you know the consequences that might happen if you get caught. It’s your own fault that she’s in-love or might be in-love with another guy.
I think you realized your mistake when you saw her and Maxon “together.” He’s prince and you just are a Six (now Two), you just want to prove something. You just want to undo what you did, but in your heart you knew you did the right choice of letting her go.
• When the rebels attacked did you notice that Maxon “gave” (he shoved her) to a guard (to Aspen) to get Mer. *sigh*
• “…With her words, I knew without a doubt: she loved me.”
“LOVED” that’s on Aspen’s point of view. GET A NEW GIRL DUDE! I think Lucy like you. *begging*

i fully thought i’d hate this. aspen was a character that i began to dislike as i continued to read the series. he was just a scrap character that was used as a conflict against america and maxon. however, reading this novella gave me more of a perspective on his character and helped me understand him more. that said, i still don’t like him. i liked his character development and how his story ended, but the before was not it.
he was so delulu in this novella. he kept referring to america as “my girl” and i was so sick of it. even if she liked the nickname at the time, she also was mad at maxon soo.. he also kept making these assumptions about maxon. he FUELED the fire between america and maxon in the second book. I can’t believe america believed this guy when he actually knew next to nothing about maxon and based his ideas on assumptions that fit how he felt about maxon for “taking” america away.

what pissed me off was he didn’t have the nerve to apologize when she was able to process it. why’re u apologizing for all the things u did when she’s asleep? he acknowledges how sorry he felt about all the things he did, so then why won’t he actually tell her? it doesn’t make sense. he also only does it after she’s in a life or death situation yet kept expressing how he felt guilty, even before that. i understand his worries about competing with maxon, but why wouldn’t he just communicate 😭😭 i think this is another one of his weaknesses, along with accepting help like lucy said.
i rated this book higher because of maxon. yup, i said it. he fully carried this series on his back and i love him so much. reading that scene where he tried to help america after the rebels attacked again from another pov 🥹 like it helped me see how much he truly cared for her, even when they were in conflict. he truly was so worried about her, and it’s even present in aspen’s eyes, yet he won’t admit maxon is a good guy. i liked how aspen was willing to put his life on the line for america, but he was also risking hers to be with her. this was so much to process 😭

Vamos a ver, el que yo odie a Aspen no quiere decir que le vaya a poner una estrella a este relato... aunque me haya sacado de quicio, aunque haya querido golpearlo durante 60 páginas, aunque sus delirios hayan sido tan absurdos que me daban ganas de recomendarle un psicólogo. Vaya, que ni así le he puesto una estrella porque es una historia corta que terminó de reafirmar lo que pensaba sobre este personaje: que me cae fatal y que menos mal las cosas en La Selección se desarrollaron en la manera en la que lo hicieron.
Ahora, si hay algo que rescato de este libro es esta nueva perspectiva que tenemos de los ataques al Palacio por parte de los rebeldes. En la saga principal siempre vemos cómo los protagonistas se esconden en los refugios y dejan que los guardias defiendan en castillo. Mientras que aquí, en El Guardián sí que vemos cómo reaccionan a los ataques de los rebeldes, a la muerte, al peligro y al haber perdido a America en los bosques.
¡Oh! Esa escena, por cierto, me partió el corazón porque, a pesar de que está narrada a través de los ojos de Aspen, vemos lo mucho que sufre Maxon al no poder ir tras ella a los bosques mientras es arrastrado de vuelta al castillo con su padre. Pobrecillo mío :'(
Ahora, si hay algo que rescato de este libro es esta nueva perspectiva que tenemos de los ataques al Palacio por parte de los rebeldes. En la saga principal siempre vemos cómo los protagonistas se esconden en los refugios y dejan que los guardias defiendan en castillo. Okay, I'm just being honest here but this novella pissed me off so much I couldn't even finish it. This is going to turn into a huge rant.
First of all, how does Aspen figure that he knows Maxon so well? How does he know that he's this horrible guy who just pretends to be decent and caring? Has he ever actually spoken to him? Has he ever made an attempt to know him? All Aspen does is make assumptions. He assumes America still loves him, he assumes Maxon is mistreating America when he never considers for one second what Maxon's life must be like. He never wants to see any good side to Maxon. It's so infuriating and Aspen thinks so highly of himself. Oh he's the best guard and the best person and he's so great yea no, you're not. You say that of all people Maxon is mistreating America when you are the one who is constantly and selfishly putting her in danger because you cant keep your hormones in check? It absolutely boggles my mind how sure he is that they wont get caught, he doesn't even give it a second thought really. Is he considering what could happen if they were caught? No. He's only thinking about himself and what he wants.
I never liked Aspen but this novella made me want to ring his damn neck. What a pompous self obsessed jerk off. Every time he called American my girl I wanted to punch him in the mouth. No dude, she's not your girl. She's not in love with you anymore. It pissed me off in The Elite when America just believes everything Aspen says about Maxon when there is zero evidence, when she has had no reason to doubt his intentions. Like Aspen is the expert on Maxon, considering he's spent so much time with him right? Having to relive that moment in this thing just pushed me too far. I cant listen to him bad mouth Maxon when he doesn't have any idea what he's talking about and I cant stand America just sitting there agreeing with him. It makes me think America doesn't even deserve Maxon, because he's been nothing but kind and noble and supportive. I have to remember how America changed her tune at the end of The Elite. It better stay that way because if she becomes indecisive again and goes back to Aspen at all during The One I might lose my mind and chuck the book out of my moving car.
On the plus side I did really enjoy the excerpt from The One. It was so funny how America was trying to be all sexy and seduce Maxon and he knew it. Oh man, if the whole book is filled with moments like that then I will thoroughly enjoy it. America seems very sure that she wants him, and I hope that never wavers because I cant take any more of this weak ass love triangle. Oh another thing this about this novella is that is further cemented by belief that America's father is a rebel. I think I'm done ranting now, but I really wish Aspen would get bitch slapped because he's the most arrogant character I've ever read about. It's not even that he's a horrible person in general, I mean he protects his family and everything and he cares about America but dear god, he is a real jerk and he assumes to know what's best for America and thinks he has to convince her of what he thinks she should do rather than letting her figure it out for herself. Which is what Maxon has done, he's given America time and space and everything she's needed. I don't see how America could end up with Aspen at all. It wouldn't make sense for the characters or the series as a whole. I kind of feel bad giving this one star, the writing isn't bad but considering I couldn't even finish it because Aspen was so infuriating I don't think I can give it any more.

Solo diré que Maxon es el indicado para America, no Aspen. Aspen puede decir que la ama, pero si realmente la amara no la habría alejado solo porque estaba asustado. Y Maxon está locamente enamorado de America, ella es su mundo.

This was my least favorite novella. It's all about Aspen and his time as a guard on the palace before he found love again with someone who wasn't America.
This is a novella you can skip without missing anything at all except for maybe how Aspen and Lucy (thank you,Khadidja for reminding me her name :P), fell in love.

*Huge Sighs*
When I first started reading this series, I instantly fell in love with the entire story line, the whole idea of what Kiera Cass had created with her magical way of writing...
I immediately fell in love with Aspen and Mer (America) and I wasn't sure about Prince Maxon. As the story progressed and the books fell away from my hands, my heart changed it's way of thinking... Aspen still clung to me but Maxon surprisingly grew to be something else and I began to fall....
Having read The Guard and seen things from Aspen's point of view, my heart has reclaimed him and his love for Mer, I can't stand by and deny this any longer.
What is even more interesting is the rumours and the sights that Aspen see's as a Guard and now I know there is something else going on, as we did before but now it's quite plain to see and feel. Whether Maxon is a part of this 'something' or has his own motives for his own 'something' remains to be seen.
The new book is on the horizon so it is with great pleasure that I am going to partake in a 'Buddy Re-Read' of this magical series before I embark on the final journey...

'The Guard' was a great addition to the series. Before reading this book, I wasn't sure what to think of Aspen at all. Was he the philandering, lying ex-boyfriend that didn't want America but couldn't stand the thought of her being happy with somebody else's? Or, had his love for America been so strong that he sacrificed his own desires to offer her a chance at a better life, one that he knew he couldn't ever offer her? Seeing events unfold through his eyes answered any questions I had about his true nature.
As a guard, Aspen's perspective also provides valuable insights about the King's nature and motivations. He silently witnesses the King's cruel and manipulative ways and his loyalty is put to the test.
His dedication to America remains steadfast. He is determined to win her back, now realizing that pushing her to enter the lottery might have been the biggest mistake of his life. As she struggles with her feelings for the two men, Aspen offers her the emotional support she needs, while trying to keep her from losing touch with her former self.
This was a quick and easy read, that I would recommend to anyone who has enjoyed this series. Aspen's story is heartbreakingly sweet as he does everything within his power to support the girl he loves, as he watches her fall for someone else. I'm really glad his side of the story was written. I like Aspen so much more now, having read his perspective.

UPDATE REVIEW: I LOVE LOVE THIS BOOK. I was actually for reading about Aspen's point of view of what is happening around palace. First of all, I got know Aspen more then I thought reading the selection series. Aspen Ledger strikes me as a guy that he thinks he has to carry the world's problem in his shoulders. He truly cares about the people around him and tries to help out people when he can. He tried to send some money to Carter Woodwork's mother and I thought it was sweet of him. I got to say fall in love with Aspen more and more as I read this book. Not only that it explains how things go around the palace but we found out the evil ways of the king. Now, i dislike him very much. Maxon, I think you need to open your eyes a little bit, I love love you too but you need to land a punch on your father but he is a big meanie. But anyways, I finally got the reason why he let go of America when they were at the tree house. All he wanted is to give her the world and he thought that by getting her in the selection would give her a better life. Overall Aspen Ledger is a kind hearted, loving, protective and he has motivates for the things that he say or do when he's around America. I mean, sure sometimes we don't like it but hey! he really loves America and all he wanted is her back and what is good for her. My heart ache a little just writing his review.
Also does anyone notice that maybe Lucy is crushing on Aspen? Because when America (does) end up with Maxon. I don't mind shipping Lucy and Aspen. I think it's cute.

It was really nice to get Aspen's POV throughout some of the scenes in The Elite. I think a lot is still happening behind the scenes that we aren't seeing though.

This book was soo good! I have no idea why or how Kiera Cass manages to utterly disappoint me with a book, and then wow me with the other. She really is a kind of her own making.
The Guard is an insight into the tough life of Aspen as the palace guard. His take on the whole Selection process and hearing his side of the story was very refreshingly beautiful. His endless passion for all things is obvious. I loved the way he analyzed things in his own way, even if he wasn’t always right. Like, what he thought of King Clarkson -
"Of course the man with everything he could ever need or want didn’t understand why any average person might want the same chance”
Or about America’s dad –
'Out of the millions of words in the world, Mr. Singer always seemed to know how to pick the handful that made you feel like you mattered.’
That’s so very true! (As was seen in Mr. Singer’s letters to America)
I was stunned to see how perfectly Kiera Cass has worded each feeling and thoughts, and made them unbelievably real. This book was so beautifully written, I am slapping myself for ever doubting Cass’s mastery of words. She has this simple, lyrical prose, and yet she manages to hold so much depth and emotions in the very handful of the words she uses.
There was one thing I noticed though, like this –
I swear, I wanted to give my girl a medal.’ I mean, what is there to swear about? Such sentences were a bit repetitive. Not that I mind them :)
Through this book, I’ve also learned much more of the setting of The Selection. The rebel attacks as seen through the eyes of Aspen differ so much from America’s pov. Hearing about them from America sitting in a safe room wasn’t all that informative it seems!
I also was wondering how Aspen and Lucy became close, or how they could ever be a good match for each other – but this book has vanquished such doubts too. I can see for myself now, that they were meant to be.
Only problem with this book? Well, I really wished it was a bit longer. There were so many things I would have loved to see through Aspen’s eyes. Like, the end of the selection, America and Aspen’s marriage, or his reaction when he finds Marlee and Carter were still in the palace. Nevertheless, I can’t complain. It was just really good. 4.5/5 stars

I'm just not a fan of Aspen, never will be. The fact I read this series when I was younger and was included in the love triangle? Nope. Didn't find this section enjoyable because of it.

It’s not a secret that I am not an Aspen fan. To me, he always seemed so…unnecesary? Is that the right word? I don’t know. He’s just so, bland, I guess.
He dumps the girl he loves, tells her to go and join the selection and marry the prince, and then acts hella petty when she does it. And then he refuses to let her go! Like, boy, could you not. Could you really, really not.
Seeing things from Aspen’s POV was alright, I suppose. I just felt like it was unimportant. At least with The Queen, we got to know a new character and saw a different selection. We also got to see a kinder King Clarkson and his relationship with Queen Amberly. With The Prince, we got to learn something different also. We see how a bit of Clarkson’s and Maxon��s relationship. We see how Maxon first reacted to America and how their relationship began. With The Guard we got, what? Just aspen being moody and hating on Maxon. We learned nothing. Honestly, I was just bored.
This isn’t really a review. It’s basically just me hating on Aspen. He should have just let America go, focused on his family and left it all alone.

Oh, Aspen! I do love reading from his point of view but at the same time I do understand why the books aren´t divided into different point of views. It gets tiresome to only read about his love for America.
