Tom and Amy are the ultimate happy couple – but only until one of them finds their ideal man.
To their friends and family, Amy and Tom are the perfect couple. Only, Amy's looking for a new man.
And so is Tom.
With a family wedding fast approaching, do they soldier on like the love birds they aren't, or come clean and face the devastation that will surely unfold?
It was very well written from a technical perspective (diction, syntax and so on) - but it remained quite uninteresting.
I had to work really hard to finish it.
The protag was not endearing or interesting. He was a guy in the closet. The whole 315 pages were simply about him trying to stay in the closet. And then at the big finale being accidently pushed out of it. And then nothing happens. I didn't find it remotely funny.
I bought this purely because I liked his last book. It wasn't what I was expecting at all. I like dark, brooding works - but that said, this was a great read. Ok, so it's fiction. First shock! I'm not a big fiction fan. And it's a comedy farce/romantic comedy - which aren't my bag either. But once again his writing pulls it out of the bag. It was funny, sometimes laugh out loud funny. It was clever and generally very enjoyable. I kept guessing what was about to happen and after a few chapters knew I had to finish. My wife is reading it now and already she is laughing and reading bits out to me, which suggests it's a hit with both sexes...
Really was Tom's struggle to believe in himself enough to accept that he is gay. He has hid for years behind careful wording and his friend Amy. Tom's workplace is an 80's style throw back with lewd behaviour, hard drinking, inappropriate comments all round. The denouement, which lasts quite a time, falls back on the old house party trope, though this is for a wedding. Gradually all the deceptions come to light - with the comic assistance from Ash.
I did find it a bit boggy in places but it did keep me interested towards the end.
