Wow. Just ... wow.

I love books. I love reading. I really like most books. I think quite a few books are fantastic. There are a handful of books that I think are phenomenal. It is actually quite rare for me to just not like a book. But this book is teetering on the edge of just not liking it and flat out hating it.

There were several times I thought about not finishing this book. Then I would take a break, play angry birds for a while, and talk myself into reading some more. Honestly, the only reason I read the whole thing was because I just had to know where she was going with this story. The answer to that: nowhere. The story went nowhere.

The whole thing was riddled with problems - all sorts of problems. But, if I'm being honest here, there were some parts that weren't too bad. Granted, they were sandwiched between the really horrible parts.

That being said, I will probably read the next one. I'm dying to know why Amy stayed with Roger.

I did not like Stealing Grace at all. I felt like I was reading a bad lifetime movie, and I actually like some bad lifetime movies but nooo. Everything was just too contrived, too pollyana and we are talking about sex slaves and human trafficking. I actually have a hard time reading about abuse in books for any Friends fans I can easily play Phoebe and go along with the author and say old yeller lived or take the blue pill go on with disbelief (matrix) but I can not go along with the plot in this book. I found myself skimming it and it my 3 years of buying ebooks it is the first book I asked for a refund. Again look at my books I have read some pretty bad books. It is not the worst book I have ever read it is just the higest rated worst book I have ever read so I am trying to prevent someone else from making the same mistake.

I really enjoyed this book. I must admit I thought it was going to be this dark and dramatic read where I am reading with my mouth hanging open and uttering nonsense to myself. The beginning did have one or two of those moments but once you get into the story it is more of a non-traditional love story and soooo good!

We meet Elena as she is leaving work one night and is waiting for the bus to arrive. She notices someone across the street but gets caught up in her own thoughts and soon after she is abducted. Alone, scared, blinded and bound she has no choice but to comply with her captures demands. She soon finds out that not only is she not alone in her misery but she along with her fellow prisoners have been picked up by a gang of human traffickers. They are transported elsewhere and made to stay in a warehouse with no food, water or hope of rescue/escape. On the second day they are made to stand facing a wall while men come in and peruse the selection of women. Elena is the second to be picked and is immediately removed and sent on her way with a man who has purchased her.

He brings her to his home and she is told that she is to be married to him–Alex and live with him as husband and wife. He briefly lays it out for her and reassures her that she does not need to fear him for he will not hurt her. Elena finds this hard to believe but as time goes by she sees that he means her no harm. They also discover that they actually get along quite well. After a while they both start to have feelings for the other and things between them start to progress.

However, the men in the“community” come by often to check on them. Women in this”community” are bought and they learn to obey or receive the consequences for their disobedience. Alex does not believe in the ways of the “community” and so this brings about some issues and they live in fear that they will be “caught” because he doesn’t believe in treating Elena with disrespect and a heavy hand. As time passes, both Alex and Elena feel worse and worse about what is going on and how the girls are being treated. Elena tries to help the women with a bit of advice but feels that it’s not enough. They eventually try to help the girls and this brings about a whole new set of issues and dangers. In this process, the find another couple who feel that what’s going on isn’t right and try to help them in their quest.

What starts out as a small rescue attempt quickly grows and the fall out and consequences are huge! Will Alex and Elena be able to help the girls find freedom? Will they be able to survive the consequences of their actions? Will Alex and Elena survive it all? You must read the book to find out! It’s worth it!!!

I found this book on Smashwords but you can purchase it on Amazon and Barnes & Noble as well. There is a companion Novella that can also be found at the previous mentioned sites. I haven’t read it yet but it is on my TBR list on Goodreads. If I had any complaint about the book it would be that there were some grammatical/editing issues but they weren’t so bad that they took away from the story.

Thanks for reading my review! :-)

P.S. Drop me a line! Let me know what you think!

I have never read

You might want to consider

If you are looking for a complex story, you might be okay with this, even then you might need a strong stomach for this book. The plot was out of this world. Just that it remained there and never came back.

I lost my interest right after they start fumbling about falling in love.

What i can't figure out, is why Amy stayed with Roger? i thought about it and then decided I am not that curious so as to read the next one.

Before I read this book, I saw that it received quite a few negative reviews. Since I am a Shelly Crane fan, I figured it would be worth a read though since I love her writing style. On top of that, I found the concept of this book pretty interesting. As a read it, I realized that on top of dealing with Stockholm Syndrome (which is kind of one of the main concepts in the book in a way), there are also other issues like human trafficking and the influence of traditional gender roles in society that come into play in the book. Those are such serious topics and yet in this novel, they are handled almost nonchalantly. That's not to say that they were not handled; it's just saying that they were added in as if it was completely normal. And that is what I think made this book so good. On one hand, you could put yourself into the story because it was written so clearly and simply (not in a bad way) but on the other hand, you were offended that people lived and acted like this (since the topics in the book are serious issues). I was left thinking about this book long after I finished it and that's always a sign to me that a book is good (when I cannot get it out of my head). I wanted a sequel to know what happens to the community and the families next and I was happy to learn that there will be one eventually.

another great book by Shelly Crane. I love how in the midst of tragedy and heartbreak, love finds a way. And even with all the bad stuff taking place in story, I found myself smiling quite a bit at the 2 main characters, Alex and Elena. oooh do I love me some Alex. ;)

This was a very interesting book. Only Shelly Crane could take a subject like human trafficking and write a romance. This was the only book I haven't read by Ms. Crane. Her Significance series is my all time favorite and has made me a full lifeime fanatic.

Elena is stolen off the streets and taken through the seedy world of human trafficking. She ends up being sold into being a wife as a part of a cult-like society. But Alex, her husband, has always felt that the treatment of the women was abusive and wanted to pick a wife just to save her from his mother's own bitter fate. As a result, Elena starts to see the good in Alex and a deep love is formed. Together they make a difference by helping some of the other women escape. In the end, they must run for their lives from not only the community but the human traffickers themselves.

Wow! What an amazing story! I really wasn’t sure what to expect when I started this. I knew it would be a little scary and emotional but I never expected so many wonderful romantic moments! Elena is such a beautiful person. She’s had a very difficult life so far but she still remains loving, forgiving, and has an incredible amount of faith in herself, God, and humanity in general. And Alex, he was quite a surprise! He was so strong, handsome, honest, and probably the only person in the community who was actually brave enough to think for himself. Together they may be the only hope the other women in the community ever have. There are some very intense, scary moments in the story, as to be expected. But there are also so many tender moments of love that it will fill you with hope as you read!

This book is different. It is not a typical hot romance, it is not erotica, however it does have elements of romance and gosh does it have a dose of surreal reality.

The subject matter is plausible and yet it isn't. It is about white/sexual slavery, one where a whole entire community is involved. The book is fiction yet it has elements where I said to myself, yeah I can see it happening, but then I was like no way can it exist/happen in reality.

Don't pick up this book if you expect another seduced in the dark story. This book is more about doing the right thing to help the women in those situations. Like I said, it has elements of romance and it is sweet but it doesn't have hot/scorching sex scenes.

It is definitely a good read. Despite the many obstacles or maybe because of them, the characters do end up falling in love. Very sweet! and it does have a HEA.

I was seriously worried when I started this book. I wanted so bad to like it because I love all of Shelly's other books. The story line scared me at first but in true Shelly form, the characters captured my heart.

The story is about human trafficing which is a part of this world's harsh reality. But more than that it's about people being able to over come their trials and pain in life if they choose to rise above. Someone else choices do not have to define who you are or how you choose to live. Love is the greatest gift thanks to the 'Grace' of God.

I can only recommend that you read all of Shelly Crane's books. I love them all.

Shelly wrote about a very serious and disgusting topic about human trafficking and managed to turn it into a brilliantly eye opening story. It is hard to write about such topics because they normally do not end well. Her characters are wonderful. I fell in love with Alex... He managed not to become what he was raised to be. Goes to show you that cycles CAN BE BROKEN.. Alex and Elena are a wonderful couple with such amazing hearts and outlooks on life. Praise to Shelly!!

The most horribly cliché book that I have ever read...interesting enough to hold my attention but had me cringing in horror ever so often. After the first quarter things just went downhill...surreal on a never-before-seen level. The relationship between the Alex and Elena had me rolling my eyes most of the time because it was in no way believable! An interesting premise of human trafficking and messed up communities that float under the radar of normal society; too bad it was executed poorly.

GREAT BOOK. EYE OPENER TO HUMAN TRAFFICKING. IT didnt go into great traumatizing details, but enough to give you a glimpse. I thought it would turn out to be with Stockholm Syndrome, but I was proven wrong. Looking forward to reading "Taking Faith"

So the first thing to admit is this is no DARK ROMANCE. Don’t let the title or blurb confuse you. Sure Elana is practically kidnapped but it’s not in any way for sexual abuse or any real dark elements.

Alex has Elana kidnapped because that’s his way of life. His community has always ‘kidnapped’ their wives, it’s just the way. Alex in no way wants to harm Elana, in fact he only has her now because at his age it was looked down upon in the community to not have a wife. So Alex marries Elana and Elana slowly learns that Alex means her no harm. Sure she never wanted to be a part of any of it but Alex is kindhearted and explains things to her to help make her understand.

I really enjoyed this story even though it was nothing like I expected. Elana slowly grows into her role as Alex’s wife and even becomes accepting of it. In time feelings begin to grow and Elana is actually grateful to Alex.

The two don’t immediately jump into husband and wife roles. Elana may cook and take care of the home but she is not allowed to leave nor have they consummated their marriage. As Alex shows his true kind colors Elana’s guard drops. When she witnesses the behavior of another new husband in the community she is outraged and also slightly grateful that Alex is her husband.

Elana just grows into her role and even takes on a mothering figure to the other community wives. She helps show them how their lives and marriages should be. I even enjoyed the fact the Elana was able to show one husband the error of his ways which led to him and his wife truly being in love.

Overall I enjoyed this story though it didn’t go in the direction I expected. Elana deals with so much and always comes out on top even with dire circumstances. Together her and Alex have a beautiful relationship that doesn’t happen overnight. The storyline was engaging and kept a steady pace throughout that was easy to follow.

I thought this book was going to be dark and, although it verses about a very dark issue, it is definitely more light than dark. In the middle of it, the story drags a bit. I mean, not much happens, but if you're into the characters, you enjoy it nonetheless in a slow, not desperately rushed to read and find out what's next kind of way.

Elena was a cool heroine and Alex, one of the sweetest guys I've ever read about. Certainly the "nicest" kidnapper.

Loads and loads of grammatical errors in the book, btw. I would give it less stars if it wasn't for the story being compelling enough. It is obvious it didn't go under any kind of edition. Also, a few stereotypes here and there, a couple of moments of ignorance. For example:

"Most of the men looked tan, foreign, a couple scruffy Americans also."

I don't think I need to explain it but, how can Elena know if the tan men are not the Americans? She could have said "most of the men sounded foreign", but she said "looked", didn't she? Can "real" Americans only be white? How does an American look like? As long as I've been able to witness, America is a big melting pot.

Another issue:

Anyway, to close the story I'm going to read Amy and Roger's short novella. I definitely want to find out how it was for them at the beginning.

I just finished Stealing Grace. This is a book about a subject that a lot of people don't like to hear about. Human trafficking is something you think happens in counties where the people are poor. Well to tell you the truth it happens everywhere. Its sad that men/women do thing sort of thing to other humans. Shelly Crane bring this gut wrenching story to you in a way that you can tell what the girls/women are dealing with when they are take. What's really sad about this its not only women that are taken. You get a small look into how some of the people rape, and beaten by the person who buys them. Some who don't make the grade standard are taken from the group of others and never seen again. If you can't handle a story that covers this subject you might not enjoy how the story is told and all the different things that happen to someone who goes against the family. You will cry a lot as well as laugh at some of the silly things are said. Personally I think every mother and father should read this book. Its an eye opener to a touchy subject.

Ok so I would give this book about a 2.5 if I could. I struggle between giving it two or three stars but I just can't give it 3 stars in the state that it's in.

First of all, let me just say that this story has a lot of POTENTIAL. It's a good story line and I enjoyed reading it and kept wondering what would happen next.

However, there were SO many grammatical errors and misspelled words, some that autocorrect should have caught right away, that it was hard to read the book at times because I was getting so irritated. I swear there was at least one error on each page.

I also didn't enjoy the writing style. I think a lot of the sentences should be re-worded, as they just didn't sound right and could have been written better. Because of all that, it's just hard for me to give this book three stars, although again, I really did enjoy the story. I think with some major editing, this book could turn into something great.

This is an incredibly realistic story about the horrors people face. It sheds light on serious criminal acts and how it is a constant factor in everyday life. This book also gets the point across about forgiveness, redemption, and love. People can change, and families don't define you. Love has the power to change you, it can make you stronger. Don't forget "Everything happens for a reason".

Elena and Alex are the definition of compassionate. Both lived through terrible things. Instead of letting those things bring them down, it made them more sympathetic to other people and caring.

This book is so incredible because it tells you about everyday dangers and how you don't always see it. It shows good always wins. Lastly love surpasses all!

5 STARS! Shelly Crane is truly an inspiring author. I don't think she is capable of writing a bad book. Figuratively this woman writes GOLD! Every book unique, but worth having!

I loved this story! (Shelly Crane...so I expected nothing less) I've been on a NA / Coming of Age binge so this was a great change of pace. This story is creative, intriguing, and unlike any other book that I have read. Although the book deals with difficult situations and there's definitely some darker details that were hard to read....this is a sweet story. It's considered inspirational fiction so you're not going to find every chapter filled with a sexual escapade. I enjoy a spicy read myself but sometimes it's nice to read something a little less "50 Shades-ish". Less can definitely more as it was with Stealing Grace. The lack of descriptive sexy time in no way took away from the emotions that you feel between Alex and El.
All in all, I really enjoyed this book. It would make one heck of a movie too. I'm looking forward to reading the novella, Finding Faith, which tells a little more about the supporting characters.

First of all, I normally love Shelly's books. So, I was a bit disappointed by this one. The story line is a good one but the content drug out a lot through the middle of the book. There were some minor editing issues but nothing too detrimental. I'm guessing that with better editing parts of the middle of the book would have been cut out altogether. But never fear, the main Characters of the book are well developed and just well...love will conquer all types.

Shelly...kinda left wondering what happened with Roger and Amy?...another follow on book maybe? But I really liked how you closed it together T the end with the visit to Alex's mom....that was awesome. Can't wait to read more of your books in the future. I'm taking Consume on vacation with me! :-)
