Everyman's War: Strategy, Security and Terrorism in India

Rate this book
What do Naxal terrorists have in common with Somali pirates? What man-made event triggers more refugees than all wars put together? How do terrorist movements end? And how can you help? Everyman’s War is a collection of insightful essays that describe our participatory role in securing ourselves and our progeny. Defence, internal security, and terrorism are important yet closely guarded issues. Even as outrage over safety of women and rising terror take centrestage, there continues to be limited access to information on the subjects of national defence and security—especially in a language that a layman can understand. Raghu Raman, an expert on security and terrorism, presents issues of defence, strategy and national security in an engaging narrative, with historical and contemporary examples. He recalibrates the great ‘India rising’ story with its real and present dangers and the role of a regular citizen in this everyman’s war.

Definition of terror being not the explosions that are shown in TV, but the systematic draining of resources of a larger group by a asymmetrically smaller group of people changes your perspective on security. Z-kitbag framework, metaphor of dancing on the edge to describe India-Pakistan conflict or the response to Chechen rebels acts of terror were points that bring in new perspective.
Definitely a worthy read if one can sift through horrors of human history and the lessons that it teaches to realize how to live in the World of "Today"

A delightful book and must read for every Indian and in fact for everyone else as well. If you thought all this while that terrorism was what we see on the television, this book breaks that myth. The author dives into every aspect of the society and explains how each of us contribute, sometime unknowingly to encouraging, spreading and not stopping what turns out to be terrorism at the end of it. The book is full of extraordinary quotes and highlights and I would specially recommend the last chapter. It clarifies a lot of doubts one’d have on how you can contribute to society in general.

It’s a book that lists out concerns of very Indian and has an outlook for the whole world so surely a good read and all this has been done without compromising the positivity. And I say that it’s not only a good read but largely implementable by every common person so that our world can become a little better place to live for us and for all the people at large. After all being a welfare state and country has to start from somewhere and that somewhere is per own will.

Very interesting book. The author passionately talks about terrorism, national security, crime and prevention. The short yet assertive paragraphs invoke a thought about our own role in war and how it is interested in us.

It truly justifies it's title 'Everyman's war'.
