He received his Ph.D. from Claremont Graduate School and has authored several books on Christian education. He resides in Irvine, California.

James Estep, Jr. serves as professor of Christian Education and director of academic assessment and faculty development as well as associate dean of the Christian Ministries Field for Lincoln Christian College and Seminary. He earned his Ph.D. from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. He resides with his family in Lincoln, Illinois.

Tried to cram in too many topics leaving each section underdeveloped. Poor formatting/delivery. Lots of "fluff" verbiage. Not enough examples from varied sources. Somewhat helpful, but also frustrating/boring.

A robust resource that provides information on the full range of issues involved in Christian ministry, After reviewing biblical perspectives on the topic and offering a detailed graphic on a systems approach to Christian management, ministry is dealt with in detail around the following topics:
Planning - including mission, vision, goals, and strategies
Organizing - reviewing various structures, job descriptions, meetings, and decision making
Staffing - recruiting, screening, development of personnel, and ethical/legal issues
Directing - development of leaders, mentoring, team building, strategies, and working with boards
Evaluating - performance reviews and evaluating the effectiveness of programs

Extremely helpful for those who want to learn tools to lead a ministry administratively. There is valuable charts provided in the book throughout that a ministry can pull out and put into their context for guidance in particular problems administratively.

This is a very thorough book on church administration. By that I mean it is certainly not light reading and ought to be used primarily as a reference, although the whole thing does give you a good overview of best practices. Some chapters are obviously better than others. It does tend to skew towards viewing the pastor as more of a CEO, but at least it does try to check itself. A good balance for the theologically stable.
