Six-shooters blazing. Bad guys closing in. When the dust settles, will he be the last man standing?
Jack Sage can’t let injustice pass. So as the Civil War veteran rides north toward the Rocky Mountains, he doesn’t hesitate to help an ambushed newspaperman. But just as they reach the tiny Texas town they’re headed for, the loner’s inner rage ignites when a homesteader is gunned down in cold blood in front of his wife and kids.
Reluctantly taking the job of marshal due to the tears of the innocents, Jack throws the guilty man in jail and starts cleaning up the lawless settlement. But between corrupt saloon owners and rough swindlers, the principled gunfighter may have bitten off more than he can chew.
Can he bring order to people in need, or will he end up in an early grave?
Stranger With A Star is the exciting first book in the Jack Sage Western series. If you like honest heroes, character-driven drama, and thrilling shootouts, then you’ll love Donald L. Robertson’s wild ride into the sunset.

I am a retired Southwest Airlines pilot. My wife Paula and I, live with our Chihuahua, Gabe, in Mesa, Arizona in a 55+ Golf Resort even though we don't play golf. It affords my wife a very active lifestyle while I spend my time writing. As a child, I enjoyed going to the Saturday matinee and spending the day watching westerns and daydreaming about the old west. I shared a passion with one of my aunts and read every western I could get my hands on. John Wayne was my favorite actor and Louis L'Amour my favorite writer. I miss those days where the good guys win, they treat the ladies right, have honor and are trustworthy. So, in about 2014, I started writing my own westerns and became quite shocked that people enjoyed them. I am so thankful to those of you who read my books, take the time to write reviews and email me. John Wayne said it best when he said "without you, I wouldn't be here". Please accept my deepest appreciation.
Stranger With A Star by Donald L. Robertson is the first book I have read by this author. The book and characters were well thought out with unexpected twists which helped move the storyline forward. As far as unforgettable characters go, the old dude, Sully certainly stands out. I am eager to read the second novel and hope it is just as enjoyable.
Really enjoyed this book. If you’re looking for n action packed content with some generalized humor mixed in from the main character especially then you will enjoy it. Jack Sage is the real deal.
A great Western novel full of excitement and intrigue. It centers around a mountain of a man, Jack Sage, who while minding his own business is thrown into a predicament only a man of his skills can handle. It has suspense, fist fights, gunplay, villains, beautiful women, packed in a story that stirs emotion. Read. It, you won’t be disappointed!
A fairly solid western, with a very competent big man who rides into a rancher trying to take over a small town and the nearby ranches. Every time I read one of these stories I am confused why they are spending so much money and time to take over a few settlers and a two-by-twice frontier town, but it really did happen at times in the past.
The main character is likable but never faces much of a challenge until a fist fight with a huge bear of a man, which puts him into the doctor's care for a few days. In true L'Amour fashion it causes him some minor limitations for a day or so then he's back on course. The book wraps up very quickly and without warning. Its pretty entertaining, and most of the characters are interesting enough, if often standard western tropes.
An action filled western with a reluctant lone town tamer hired to clean up a troubled Texas town. It's a great roaring story with elements of mystery and suspense. Jack Sage is not your average cowboy, having see the elephant in conflicts across the world and already cleaned up an infamous Texas border town he's just passing through when he finds an innocent man in trouble. Doing the right thing lands him in a powder keg between a greedy rancher, a town and Comanche raiders. The only thing Jack can do is rely on his past experience and do what needs to be done. Jack is hard as the rocky ground he walks on and with the help of those he's befriended he's going to do what he's set out to do, even if it's father then many may expect. It's a great tale and Jack is an interesting character. I haven't yet met a Don Robertson book I haven't completely enjoyed and this book doesn't disappoint at all. It's a great read.
This was a good read. If you like a good classic western then this is for you. It's well written with a good plot full of believable characters and the storyline moves along quickly. So if you have a couple of hours to spare and like a good old fashioned western I highly recommend this book. The only downside in my opinion is that it's very predictable and not at all original it's basically the same story that's been told hundreds of times in books TV shows and films. That being said I still enjoyed reading it and will definitely be reading more in this series.
I like a good Western; one that has action, good characters, and a good storyline. This novel hits on all three. The characters are well thought out and fairly well developed. That is, all but the main protagonist. I wanted more about the man Jack Sage, especially as he does some super-human type stuff. I was also disappointed in the final chapter and the final action scene. It needed resolution, but was over in a page or two. So I had to ding the rating. A 4.4 out of 5 rating.
This was an excellent read. This going to be a great series. Lot's of action and excitement. Very well written story, kind of reminded me of the Long Arm series. Same bad ass kind of Marshall. Not as lucky with the ladies though.
I would truly recommend this book to anyone that enjoys a a great Western story. I'm looking forward to reading many more if the series continues.
An extremely well told story. I do believe I have a crush on Nancy, Doc's sister. I would have enjoyed seeing Mather get shot. And without a doubt I'd truly enjoy sitting over at the stable shooting the bull with old Sully while reading the Cherry Creek Gazette! Mr. Robertson would be a successful wordsmith in ANY GENRE.
A classic old west story with a hint of Matt Dillon
This tale taking place in west Texas has all the parts that readers love, greedy men taking from others, hired guns spreading fear and townspeople unsure where to turn until Jack Sage rides into town. After cleaning up Laredo, Sage stays in Cherry Creek long enough to make things right. Great read.
The story line is consistent without errors or omissions. Good characters and interesting plot twists. It was a welcome break to read a story without the overused and tired memes of a hero bent on revenge or a woman trying to help then needing to be rescued
I've read all of his books and have yet to be disappointed. Some are better than others, but all are well written and entertaining. He provides strong characters, both principle and supporting. Jack is a strong lead, and Sully ( my favorite) provides terrific entertaining support .
Our hero, Jack Sage is a man who knows what he is and what his purpose in life is. A no-nonsense sheriff who doesn’t hesitate to do the right thing. A man of discernment who recognizes a killer, a liar, a thief when he meets one! An exciting and delightful read. Cant wait to read book two.
the author takes a classic western story and makes it a great story.
The main character Jack Sage will keep you on the edge of your chair thanks to the authors ability to write. A great job describing the story characters and their place in the story. But the ending will surprise one and all. A great read.
I have book 2 downloaded The one fact about a series about a hero is, you know he's not going to be killed... Shot, wounded or left for dead.....yet he survives... There are several very strong people..men and women ..in book 1 that I'm hoping will be part of the following books.
This episode in the Jack Sage Saga was filled with intrigue, surprises, sadness and happiness. The story almost ended without knowing what happened to a hired killer when he showed up. After a brief conversation, Sage began to ride on when a sixth sense caused him to turn and, once again, dodge certain death.
Another reason Donald Robertson is one of my favorite authors
This was a really good book just like all of Donald Robertson's westerns. The protagonist is believable and likable and the story was excellent. I recommend it to anyone who likes westerns.
Excellent! My preference is western and this was one of the better I have read in quite awhile. Thank you for writing and I look forward to your next one. Have a great day. Keep up the good works.
This was a great start to a new series and a new author! I really liked Jack and all the other good guys, and the bad guys were bad! I moving on to the next book and am looking forward to it! 4 stars. I rarely give 5.
I enjoyed this story very much. Had tears rolling down my cheeks from laughing about 'branded by a star. Now you're going to have to be a law man for the rest of your life.' Can't wait to read book 2 & 3. Thank you.
Book is missing at least half a dozen pages which just come up totally blank. This makes the continuity hard to follow. It makes the reader have to guess at the storyline at times. It is a good classic western except for that.
Good story and lots of interesting characters. Enjoyed the historical content as well that reflects the knowledge of the author. Look forward to reading more of Mr Robertson,'s books.
What a terrific story to read for an author for the first time. This was an excellent pieve of writing..strong characters..great plot and it flowed so effortlessly!
A good story. A solid western story. Great characters that have been carefully thought out.. I am looking to reading more about Jack Sage. Mr. Robertson is an author that I look forward to reading.
Excellent western. Nothing unexpected in the story but very well written. Reminded me of something I would have picked off my grandfather’s shelf on a hot Texas summer day. Enjoyed it just as much as an old guy myself now.
I have never read a book by this Author. I really enjoyed it. For me exceptional writing and so very real characters. I’m off to find the second book of Jack Sage and would loved to meet this Marshal.
Real action on a continuous story the characters were real. Good story. Descriptions of events kept you reading and interested. I liked all the people and the roles they played
Jack Sage just stepped in it! You know the feeling- you’re moseying ’ along and just step in something you’d have rightly strode around if you ‘d only noticed it first. But…. now you’ve GOT to deal with it…..stink or no…..deal with it.
I enjoyed this story, think others will too . it's not like most western you read today, lots of twist and turns. I'll be reading more of this writers as I find them!
