Wrapping up the long-running Gloom Cookie series, The Final Curtain brings us to a brief resting point for all of the characters as the goth soap opera brings everything to a boil, with plots, twists and turns in the relationships and the storylines.
Serena Valentino is best known for weaving tales that combine mythos and guile with her work on the comic book series GloomCookie and Nightmares & Fairy Tales, and her best selling Disney Villain Novels which have earned her critical acclaim for her unique style of storytelling, bringing her readers into exquisitely frightening worlds filled with terror, beauty and extraordinary female protagonists.
Her Disney Villain novel series would be best enjoyed if read in this order: Fairest of All: The Story of the Wicked Queen, The Beast Within: The Story of Belle’s Prince, Poor Unfortunate Soul: A Tale of the Sea Witch, Mistress of All Evil: A Tale of the Dark Fairy. Mother Knows Best: A Tale of the Old Witch and The Odd Sisters: A Villains Book to be released in Summer 2019. Book 7 will be out Summer 2020, Book 8 summer of 2021, and Book 9 Summer of 2022.
Serena lives in New Orleans with her dog Gozer, and a very tiny kitty named Momma.
I loved the first three volumes of Gloom Cookie, so I was recently excited to revisit them over a decade after my first read. To me they still held up, so I found volumes four and five online and ordered them. Volume 5 arrived first but I found it pretty disappointing. It felt like the creators got bored with the Gloom Cookie universe and just wanted to wrap it up in a way that seemed rushed and shallow. I also thought the artwork seemed rushed and unfinished and not up to the lush, complicated standards of the first three. The book was dominated by Vermilion, of all people- plus a new, pathetic character named Moon Raven. (To be fair, maybe she was introduced in volume 4? I don't know since I haven't read that one yet.) I will continue to treasure my copies of volumes 1, 2 and 3 and I still have high hopes for 4 (which will hopefully arrive in my mailbox later this week), but 5 is definitely a let-down.
I was really disappointed with this volume, and how the sloppily ended the series. The artwork was subpar in my opinion, and there were several loose threads. What happened to Max? Where did Chrys go after seeing Lex and Sebastian? After Damien was put to sleep for threatening to kill Sarah (another wtf moments), what happened? I assumed maybe the carnival would take him away, but it's unclear. It was conveniently not talked about, instead focusing on Vermillion and Moon Raven, two characters that I have a strong dislike of. I really wanted to like this more since I enjoyed the series. It felt rushed though, and as if the author wasn't sure where to go with the story.

Still a fun story, sort of a...non-fullfilling ending (so what happens? Is that it?) - my least fave artwork of the series. Some of it was okay but it really did not suit the comic in my opinion. It was too comicky, instead of arty like the rest.
Although the book itself was fairly good I had a hard time getting around the fact that the drawings and characters looked so much different than the first four!
