In small town America, attorney Tom Carlyle discovers the raped and burned body of Sue Ann Ainsley. Realizing who was involved, he agrees to keep the whole story suppressed, in return for certain favours. Ten years later the incident is mostly forgotten, until Jack and Dorothy Mortlock move to the town where Jack is to work at an agricultural chemical firm. They are happy, but their daughter Louise is troubled by something and soon has a horrific accident, after which she seems to be someone else…
A rather typical 'ghost-revenge' story by Sharman, or I should say, typical for 70s/80s horror. The prologue, set in an isolated New England village, has a local lawyer finding a dead body in a field; turns out to be the beautiful 17 yo daughter of the town's doctor, and she obviously had been raped and murdered. The lawyer finds an inscribed gold watch clutched in her fist and lightbulbs go off.
Flash forward 10 year and the Mortlock family moves into town from England; Jack Mortlock got a super new job in the States (something to do with ecosystems) with lots of perks, like a new swanky car and a lovely old New England house. The Mortlock's young 11 yo daughter, however starts acting a little strange, at first things like demanding a certain bedroom and 'sleepwalking', but it gets worse. Obviously, the house they are staying in was the murdered woman's from the prologue and something is tweaking little Louise...
Judgement Day also tosses in a mystery that gets slowly unraveled. Who killed Sue Ann from the prologue. Obviously (again that word!) she is back, using Louise to get revenge, but who will find her revenge served cold? Lots of suspects to be sure. This probably dragged on about 100 pages too long, but overall, a decent read with some pretty inventive foo. 2.5 80's horror stars!
Jack Mortlock and his wife and daughter move to the small town of Kilmer to take up a new research job. After an accident happens to his daughter Louise he finds himself caught in a murdered girl’s plan for revenge from beyond death
A good read, with a lot of small town creepiness and murderous secrets. Some bloody deaths scenes
