Peter Wardwell finds an ancient whistle in the ruins of a house about to be knocked down. When he goes sailing with girlfriend Mary Anne, he takes her to a mysterious cove, where he gives the whistle a go. It brings on a massive storm and fog that nearly kills them! However, it also seems to have summoned the spirit of Peter's ancestor Simon, who was burned at the stake for being a warlock. Whoops! Simon is trying to take possession of Peter's body to get revenge on those who burned him, as well as be born again.
Once again, similar to Magic Show, this one misses the opportunities to be a fun horror tale of supernatural revenge. There's some pet deaths and a graveyard disturbance, and that's about it, which is a little disappointing! It's a little more spooky and stylish than the other book, but seems to follow a very similar pattern. Boy gets caught up in a series of supernatural events, and his scared girlfriend must call upon the help of an adult skilled in the supernatural to assist her in saving his soul. The final showdown is quite well done. Once again, this would have benefited from being longer, so that it could beef up the vengeance aspect and witchcraft elements, which were quite intriguing. Nonetheless, tame and undemanding supernatural fun!
'OMG' - this would compete only with Sweet Valley High for my favourite series of books EVER when I was about 13! I LOVED all of this amazing American teen horror series and thought they were all brilliant, so feel compelled for that reason to give this 5 stars! I would love to get them again, although maybe I should just leave them as the perfect read in my memory - I can practically still remember them all!
I read all of the books in this teen horror series over and over in junior high and high school. I'm sure if I read them now I would find them hideous (in the bad way), but because I loved them so much then, I'm giving them all five stars!
If your hot but dumb boyfriend decides to blow a nasty rusty old whistle and accidentally summons some pissed of witchy ancestors who are holding a major grudge, he probably deserves what’s coming to him tbh
This was much scarier than Magic show. I found myself looking around in bed at night and wondering what every sound was.
I didn't appreciate the ending because of what happened to one of the characters. I wish it had been written differently and that Mary Anne and Peter would have shown more concern.
