Some 120 haiku by such masters as Basho, Issa, and Buson—all written on themes of the beauty of nature—are combined with the woodblock prints and paintings of the great artists of classical Japan. The poems appear both in skillful English translation, as well as in the original Japanese.
White camellias falling— the only sound in the moonlit evening
This is a jewel of a book. The poems and the illustrations both held me captive for a while; they're just so beautiful. I received this book as a present from my aunt last Christmas and intend to gift this book to others in the future, because it really makes a perfect gift (and not only to people, who love Japanese poetry and art like I do).
There is an introduction, which will be especially helpful to those readers, who don't know too much about the topic of the book yet. At the end, the book offers a glossary of the artists, the poets and the illustrations, which I found very helpful.
“A haiku garden is a place where humans closely interweave their daily activities with nature.”
A book divided into four seasons, highlighting the importance of each season in Japan. The introduction gives a brief introduction to Haikus as well. I found reading the haikus to be therapeutic, and relaxing, especially as I was reading them in a japanese garden in Fuyu/Winter . The japanese illustrations were also beautiful. A nice book to have in your library to revisit every once in a while.
Exactly what it says it is! I have a wonderful memory of reading the poems from this book out to my family as we did various activities in the summer. It was a lot of fun, and I might give it another read, too!
Great read for those who want to CASUALLY ENJOY haiku's. I feel like this collection brings them together in a very enjoyable way that is not overbearing or academic. It's just such a joy.
I really enjoyed this book in the series by Stephen Addiss, Fumiko and Akira Yamamoto. It is filled with great pieces from the Japanese masters along with great illustrations. Arranged to toe four seasons, this books is one I'll pick up again as the year progresses and will be a great seasonal aid to my own haiku writing.
