FLAME AND FORTUNE is a spry fantasy featuring a combustive fire elemental, a hapless were-elf, and a willful will-o’-wisp on a quest to retrieve a lost mortal girl. Hot-headed Flame is too loud and flashy for his own good, while poor Fenris Fortune is a young elf burdened by a werewolf's curse. Each flee their unsettled lives and meet on the road, where they find a shared knack for hunting down mortal children that have strayed into the Shattered Realm. When the pair are joined by the strong-minded will-o’-wisp, Maleeka, the trio finds themselves battling a sinister foe who threatens to unravel their very reality. Their adventure take them from Seeker’s Sanctuary, the capital city where everybody and their nephew has a statue erected for themselves no matter how trivial their heroic deed, to a fantastic endgame at the besieged outpost of Grimhold.
Flame & Fortune, sounds like a great title for a dynamic duo, but it’s actually the adventures of a terrific trio in a magical realm where anything can, and often does happen! On a quest to find a lost mortal, Flame, a “hot-headed” fire elemental and his sometimes furry partner, Fenris Fortune, are magnets for trouble, which is how they met the will-o’-wisp, Maleeka, who joins them in their adventure. Their travels take them on a twisted path full of danger, strange creatures and only by working together, can they survive against the evil that follows them!
Can you imagine partnering with a guy whose very touch could light you up like a Roman candle? How about having to deal with an elf who has been cursed and becomes a were-wolf type creature? Let’s not forget the will-o’-wisp, who could know they could have such strong wills, opinions and be so smart?
I think my “inner child” calls to me every time I see a book by author Brian Clopper! I know it will be written with humor, snark and filled with slick word-play and over-the-top adventures, all at break-neck speed! There is a magical quality to each of his books that I find addictive and charming for ALL ages! For younger readers, Mr. Clopper challenges their vocabulary, for adults, oh heck, I admit it, I MAY have learned a few new words, myself!

I send my books to my favorite writer from my childhood, Piers Anthony. His Xanth books were among my favorites when I was a teen, and he has written nice things about every single book I've sent him. This time, it was a beta copy of FLAME AND FORTUNE. Here's what he had to say on his website:
"I read Flame And Fortune, by Brian Clopper, published by Behemoth Books. This is a fabulous story, full of imagination. It features the fire elemental Flame, whose mere touch burns what he touches, and his friend Fenris Fortune, a were-elf, and a will-o'-wisp Maleeka, a tiny girl who lives in a lamp. This unlikely trio is good-hearted but tends to blunder constantly into trouble. Maybe one example will do to illustrate the tapestry of magic here. At one point they are trekking toward their destination when a storm comes up and they must take shelter in a house with an odd old woman; she is hospitable, but says don't even look at the papers on her desk. Naturally Fenris is curious, so he waits until the others are asleep then starts reading the letter on the desk. And it starts Dear Stranger, I hate that you have decided to read my words... What's going on here? Well, it seems that whoever reads the letter to the end will get trapped inside it, and that last victim doesn't want to do that to him so is trying to dissuade him. But he can't stop reading. I love the imagination of that sequence. To my mind, Clopper is emerging as a significant fantasy writer, not just for children."
As with all Brian Clopper's work, the characters and settings are rich with personality and detail -- including the wildlife and vegetation. The author describes the main characters as "a combustive fire elemental, a hapless were-elf, and a willful will-o'-wisp." Flame is my favorite. He spends his life literally on fire. I love the idea of that, and the author makes sure to address what happens when he touches stuff. Does it burn, or is it safe to sit or walk on without starting an inferno? This is just one aspect of a magical tale that takes Flame and his buddy Fortune (the aforementioned were-elf) on a quest that culminates in a great siege at an outpost named Grimhold.
This is a nicely challenging read for youngsters and a lavishly colorful one for oldsters. It also has a smattering of omniscient narrative that, if this were a movie, I imagine would be delivered by a warm and gravelly voice-over by someone like John Hurt.
