If you have 2 brain cells in the same hemisphere don’t even consider this poorly written thing!Ok I shoulda looked at the description better but w Taylor Sherridan’s series out and loving that time period I bit. THE STUPIDEST story ever and I’m no prude. Just some ignorant girl allowing some disgusting self inflated man to spank her repeatedly “for her own good”. So if you have a fetish for that ok- but it’s not even a decent story, poorly fleshed out characters, a blah heroine and repetitive as hell. 😤🤬Mad at myself for wasting my 1 hour it took to read.
Here I am, stretching my boundaries. This is a domestic discipline book. I was going to say spanking book but I think that implies that the spanking had an erotic element. Here it really didn't. She goes west and after being the only survivor of an indian attack on the wagon train, she ends up with a family who takes her in and adopts her. I thought that was odd since she was 17. Most 17 year olds don't get legally adopted especially in 1883 in the old west. The oldest son, who is 24, but was really written as if he were 10 years older, takes over disciplining her as she has previously been spoiled rotten by her rich parents.
In order for her to get a spanking every 5 to 10 pages or so, she has to act really immature, silly and rash. And boy does she ever. I read it. It was interesting. I had no major problems with it in that I knew what it was about before I bought it. Still after a while it did begin to wear on me that she didn't learn, that almost everything she did earned her a punishment, and that she was expected to obey the man absolutely. This eventually irked my feminist bone even though he was always proven right. I think I would have enjoyed it more if less of the book was about the discipline, that there was more plot so I could see that the spankings were a rational result of the happenings of the plot. Also, everyone in the book was a fan of spanking in marriage which just seems unlikely. But keep in mind, I'm the farthest thing from an expert on this type of book or lifestyle.
The writing was competent. The characterizations were fairly clear for the main characters. I did enjoy the younger brother. There were a couple of sex scenes late in the book. Pretty explicit but not over the top and not dependent on the spanking. Don't think this is going to be my cuppa, but it was interesting.
I thought this was the book on which the Duttan's 1883 story was based. Wrong. This was a ridiculous book. A spanking every few pages. A female who hated/loved being spanked. A male who assumed his right to "correct" her. A female who had the shortest memory on record. I'm amazed I finished the damn thing.
Laura grew up spoiled in her parents' house, which left her completely unprepared for the real world when they suddenly passed away when she was just sixteen. Believing she could manage much better on her own than under her uncle's abuse, she decided to go West. Laura's trip was quickly derailed and turned into a nightmare until she was rescued by Dalton and his brothers.
Dalton Garrison brought her home where his family accepted her with open arms. Laura's initial bratty and childish ways earned her too many trips across Dalton's knees to count. Eventually however, Laura blossomed under Dalton's guidance. She studied hard and developed interests in science and ranching. Determined to broaden the horizons of other women, she started a social group to discuss the latest scientific advances. Laura even had aspirations of creating a ranched based orphanage once she was old enough to have a ranch of her own. In time, her relationship with Dalton also blossomed.
I have found that my opinion of a book is sometimes contingent on how well I can identify with the main character. Many spanking novels that have amazing spanking scenes leave me unsatisfied because the damsel in distress is entirely too immature and bratty. Initially, that is how I thought Reesa Roberts' "1883" was going to be. Laura starts out incredibly obnoxious and annoyingly juvenile. Her antics were childish and her punishments were frequent. I have to admit, I did not have high hopes for "1883" at first because I found Laura's behavior to be that of a child and not of a young adult. I am so very glad I stuck with it though as this turned out to be one of my favorite spanking novels. Reesa Roberts managed to do something that is not common in the spanking book world. She allowed Laura to grow and mature right before the reader's eyes. Laura's character developed into an amazing woman who was smart, thoughtful, caring, and just a bit naughty (which in my opinion is the best a woman can be and one whom I can definitely relate to).
Reesa Roberts is an amazing author. She uses wonderfully descriptive language in such a way that the reader actually becomes a part of the characters' world. She is detailed and poetic. Her writing style is of the caliber of mainstream best sellers, but includes the added bonus of spanking. Her books are also the length of vanilla novels, which is easily twice as long as the average spanking novel, giving the reader the opportunity to lose herself in this fictitious world for more than just an hour or two.
I wholeheartedly recommend this book to any and all spanking enthusiasts. I personally can't wait to read another one of Reesa Roberts' novels.
