In My Own Words: Women's Experience of Hysterectomy

Rate this book
Perhaps you’ve had or are thinking about having a hysterectomy.

Maybe you know someone who is having a hysterectomy.

In either situation the most common reaction is to feel isolated and fearful about what you don’t know.

The Hysterectomy Association believes having enough good quality, impartial information is the key to navigating this change successfully, we also know that other people’s stories are incredibly powerful too.

This book of real-life stories has been drawn together from many that have been shared with us over the years. They show that whilst every experience of hysterectomy is unique there are common threads and themes running through them.

Other people’s stories help women feel less isolated. They show that they aren’t going mad, missing the point or stupid. They show their concerns are genuine and that the only way to deal with them is to voice them.

They are a mixed bag telling of loss, happiness, joy and pain and they talk of a need to share with others before moving on

I started out wanting to be a librarian and even did my work experience in my local library. I love the feel and smell of books and get a high when I have a new one to get my teeth into. I almost ended up as a librarian when I went to library school at Loughborough Uni and studied information science.

I am the author of six books and one short story including Woman on the Edge of Reality, LinkedIn Made Easy and 101 Handy Hints for a Happy Hysterectomy (no, I'm not joking!). I'm also the founder and CEO of the Hysterectomy Association.

My mantra is “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”

This quotation has been a guiding light throughout my life and I passionately believe that if people have the right sort of information and a guide to help them understand how it fits together, then they are best placed to make the decisions they need too in the long term, whether as a business owner or for their long term health.

As part of my research before deciding whether to have a hysterectomy or not this book of other women's experiences has been very helpful. There are stories which are very reassuring, others that make me second guess any decisions I think I've already made and plenty of useful hints and tips.

I was also relieved (if that's the right word) to see stories from women a similar age to me. That definitely helps me feel less alone.
