The twenty-first novel from New York Times bestselling author Eric Jerome Dickey, a steamy thriller set in tropical Barbados

Her name is Reaper. She kills. And so does her sister.

Wherever the Barbarians send her she goes, then gets out quickly. Within hours she’s wearing a new disguise, a new accent, a new wig, and on the way to a new continent, a new assignment. But when a job goes bad in Trinidad—when she sends two of the ruthless gangsters, known as the Laventille Killers, to chat with Jesus’s daddy—the Barbarians aren’t pleased.

They send her to Barbados, the next island over, barely two hundred miles away. It’s not far enough, and she knows it. She knows the Laventille Killers are looking for her, and Barbados is crawling with Trini accents. But the Barbarians won’t let her leave. They stick her there with no passport, no credit cards, no way out, and send her job after job of no consequence. The first rule of hit (wo)man Do the job, move on. This can’t last.

So with the help of her newfound relation, who is equally skilled in courting— and thwarting—danger, Reaper makes her own plans—plans she’ll have to pull off before the Barbarians catch on. Before the Barbarians send someone for her . . .

Filled with pulse-pounding suspense, steamy romance, and complex characters, A Wanted Woman will have legions of fans panting for more.

Eric Jerome Dickey was born in Memphis, Tennessee and attended the University of Memphis (the former Memphis State), where he earned his degree in Computer System Technology. In 1983, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in engineering.

After landing a job in the aerospace industry as a software developer, Eric Jerome Dickey's artistic talents surfaced, inspiring him to become an actor and a stand-up comedian. Yet Eric quickly found out that writing was something he could do and do well. From creative writing classes to avidly consuming the works of his favorite authors, Eric Jerome Dickey began to shape a writing career of his own. Having written several scripts for his personal comedy act, he started writing poetry and short stories. "The film work gave me insight into character development, the acting classes helped me understand motivation...All of it goes hand in hand," Eric explains. He joined the IBWA (International Black Writers and Artists), participated in their development workshops, and became a recipient of the IBWA SEED Scholarship to attend UCLA's Creative Writing classes. In 1994 his first published short story, "Thirteen," appeared in the IBWA's River Crossing: Voices of the Diaspora-An Anthology of the International Black Experience. A second short story, "Days Gone By," was published in the magazine A Place to Enter.

With those successes behind him, Eric Jerome Dickey decided to fine-tune some of his earlier work and developed a screenplay called "Cappuccino." "Cappuccino" was directed and produced by Craig Ross, Jr. and appeared in coffee houses around the Los Angeles area. In February 1998, "Cappuccino" made its local debut during the Pan African Film Festival at the Magic Johnson Theater in Los Angeles.

Short stories, though, didn't seem to fulfill Eric Jerome Dickey's creative yearnings. Eric says, "I'd set out to do a ten-page story and it would go on for three hundred pages." So Eric kept writing and reading and sending out query letters for his novels for almost three years until he finally got an agent. "Then a door opened," Eric says. "And I put my foot in before they could close it." And that door has remained opened, as Eric Jerome Dickey's novels have placed him on the map as one of the best writers of contemporary urban fiction.

Eric Jerome Dickey's book signing tours for Sister, Sister; Friends and Lovers; Milk in My Coffee; Cheaters; and Liar's Game took him from coast to coast and helped propel each of these novels to #1 on the "Blackboard Bestsellers List." Cheaters was named "Blackboard Book of the Year" in 2000. In June 2000, Eric Jerome Dickey celebrated the French publication of Milk in My Coffee (Cafe Noisette) by embarking on a book tour to Paris. Soon after, Milk in My Coffee became a bestseller in France. Eric Jerome Dickey's novels, Chasing Destiny, Liar's Game, Between Lovers, Thieves' Paradise, The Other Woman, Drive Me Crazy, Genevieve, Naughty or Nice, Sleeping with Strangers, Waking with Enemies, and Pleasure have all earned him the success of a spot on The New York Times bestseller list. Liar's Game, Thieves' Paradise, The Other Woman, and Genevieve have also given Dickey the added distinction of being nominated for an NAACP Image Award in the category of Outstanding Literary Work in 2001, 2002, 2004, and 2005. In 2006, he was honored with the awards for Best Contemporary Fiction and Author of the Year (Male) at the 2006 African American Literary Award Show. In 2008, Eric was nominated for Storyteller of the Year at the 1st annual ESSENCE Literary Awards. In January 2001, Eric Jerome Dickey was a contributor to New American Library's anthology Got To Be Real: Four Original Love Stories, also a Blackboard Bestseller. He also had a story entitled “Fish Sanwich” appear in the anthology Mothers and Sons. In June 2002, Dickey contributed to Black Silk: A Collection of African American Erotica (Warner Books) as well as to Riots Beneath the Baobab (published by Inte

A Wanted Woman is a roller-coaster ride of heart-stopping, nerve-shattering non-stop exhilarating action as a female assassin is caught-up between two warring gangs in this deadly cat and mouse tale. As a deadly assassin for the Barbarians, MX-401 knows the rules – the contract must be completed at all costs. Yet a blotched job leaves her employer pissed at her, assigning her more reckless assignments making her more visible to the rival gang who is sparing any cost to find her. All of this chilling action takes place in the laid-back charming Caribbean where once again Dickey shows his amazing talents for detailed scene setting that provokes the imagery that you are right in the middle of things. Also known as a woman of thousand faces, MX-401 takes awhile to begin to reveal the complexities that makes the reader want to know more about her while other characters remain a little too one-dimensional, And yes, the steamy sex scenes are here but I found the brutally horrific scenes of torture and gang raping too detailed and uncomfortable.

FIRST IMPRESSION:: Had this book not been required reading for my book club, I never would have picked this up. I approached with extreme prejudice, thinking this was going to be a romance novel with a dash of mystery and a pinch of action and suspense. I was wrong dead wrong -- on an epic proportion. This was probably the bloodiest, goriest and the most crude books I have ever encountered. Definitely the most racist and misogynistic. So much so, that it was hard to enjoy.

THE STORY:: Overall, this book was insane. There was no good guy to root for. The female protagonist, Goldie aka MX-401, was an awful human being. I found nothing redeeming about her. Her every reaction is fueled by anger, and never for the right reasons. She never treated anyone with any level of respect yet demanded it from everyone. Always condescending, too hard, and too cruel. She's just as sadistic as her targets.

What I really didn't like was how one-dimensional she is. Even with her complex ethnic background and her complicated past, she fell flat. It didn't add anything to her character, it did not give her relatable insecurities, or seem to have any effect at all. Her every thought and action screamed, "don't fuck with me. If you do, you die." If an author wants me to get behind their bad-ass character, they have to give me something to root for. I get that she's an assassin; but in this book, that's all she was.

Even as a child, she was represented as harsh, cruel and a little too worldly. Goldie was jaded from day one; I got no glimpse into a happier younger girl and she didn't turn into a more well-adjusted adult. She was a bitter, angry and jaded preteen who turned into an even more bitter, violently angry and sadistically jaded grown woman. This is a major problem for me; because frankly, I kind of hate her. When the "bad guys" are after her or calling her a crazy bitch, I don't sympathize. I wanted someone -- anyone -- to knock her down a few pegs.

Goldie just doesn't feel real. Even James Bond -- who's been kicking ass for decades -- mellows out with a shaken martini and beds hot women. Goldie just says tense, stays pissed and kills people. No hobbies, no relaxation, no casual sex. She's just too Mrs. Hannigan for me; the literal "kill, kill, kill”. I don’t think I’ve ever encountered a book that gave me so many reasons to hate the main character.

Now that I'm done ranting about the lead, I can talk about the plot. Oh, the plot. Where for art thou...? This story dragged on... and on... and on and gave very little. I was beyond frustrated with the pace of this book and how slowly it revealed vital information. For a story that was overflowing with violence, aggression and death, the scenes that would explain why the violence and death were actually occurring were given out very far and few between. And when all is finally revealed, at the last minute mind you, it's predictable. I feel cheated. Nothing was ever fully explained. But hey, if that was a writing device to make us feel just as in the dark as MX-401 herself, mission accomplished. More likely, it's a setup for the next book.

I think the writing style was interesting. At first, I thought it was too clipped and delivered with a rapid-fire pace. But then, it fit with Goldie so I didn't mind. The chapters where it wasn't told from her perspective were more precise. By the time I got to the end, I didn't notice.

FINAL THOUGHTS:: Something very strange happened by the time this audiobook wound down to it's final minutes. Somewhere in the middle of all the crazy, it got to me. I can't even explain how or why. Do I care about MX-401 now that it's over; no. Would I like to hear more of her story; oddly, yes. Maybe it's curiosity because I didn't learn enough. Maybe it's because I finally got the meat I was looking for. Not sure. Plenty of people have said you don't have to like the main character to be interested in the story and I never really got that; now, I understand.

RECOMMENDED FOR:: If you like your story with non-stop action and aren't too squeamish, give it a whirl. Otherwise run far, far away.

EJD is a much better writer than this tryst of violence that makes up most of this novel. Its hard to figure exactly what the author had in mind and for what purpose? His best work to date is "An Accidental Affair." 4 of 10 stars

A Wanted Woman is the twenty-first novel by NYT Bestselling Author, Eric Jerome Dickie. Readers who are familiar with his Gideon series will most likely enjoy this book. It involves an assassin named agent MX-401, aka Reaper, who is sent to Trinidad to take out a local politician. Her employers, The Barbarians, were very explicit that the kill must take place during a rooftop party. As with many situations, the plan did not work out in her favor and Reaper was left with no choice but to flee. As a result, her contractors set up a second opportunity for her to make the kill—albeit in an even more difficult circumstance. Reaper succeeds, but at a terrible cost—one which angers her employers as members of Trinidad’s most violent gang, the Laventille Killers—or LKs for short—were killed in the crossfire. Knowing that the LK’s will pick up her trail, Reaper escapes to the island paradise of Barbados, where she resides in a safe-house set up by The Barbarians.
Despite fulfilling the contract, The Barbarians refused to pay Reaper, kept her in a filthy one-room dump which didn’t have any food, lacked a real bed, and was without air-conditioning. Those who have been to any inland area of St Phillip, Barbados know first-hand how uncomfortably hot it can get during the day, and that electric fans are useless. The only entertainment Reaper had was a view through a neighbor’s bedroom window—where the two occupants frequently engaged in loud sex.
The Trinidad assignment left Reaper with many unanswered questions—ones that a professional, such as herself, would only think of. The fact that she was forced to complete her task in the most inefficient and life threatening way raised many red flags.
Fortunately for her, she was joined by her Bahamian half-sister, Petrichor—an assassin who’s happily married to a Bajan while using her housewife status as a cover. Reaper’s assisted by Petrichor on various assignments The Barbarians gave her. However, each job raised more unanswered questions—ones which she believed were connected to the Trinidad assignment. She enlisted the assistance of a local arms dealer to help her look into the dealings of the LK, considering that The Barbarians refused to give her any answers. As a result she inadvertently exposed herself—alerting the LKs to her location.
This isn’t your ordinary action-adventure thriller. The early chapters were very brutal—as the earlier scenes involved a rape followed by an even more graphic rape scene near the end. There were also scenes of torture that would make any man shield their genitals. Be warned that there’s a lot of graphic violence. Reaper’s not a woman you’d want to upset—as she’s demonstrated numerous times that she’s a very cold-blooded sociopath. To put matters simply, she’ll do a lot more to her victims than simply shoot them in the back of the head—execution-style—and walk away. These scenes will definitely shock some readers.
What I enjoyed about the novel was that Dickie took actual events from the local Bajan news and included them in the story. One item that was big news in Barbados was about a Rastafarian family who had squatted on land owned by Sagicor Financial Services for several generations before they were discovered. Because of the laws, it was very difficult to get rid of the family. Despite some scenes in the third act that I felt were a bit overdone, the ending that resulted from the culmination of those scenes was very satisfying—and would appeal mostly to those who love a good tale of revenge.
The last chapter raised another unanswered question, one that will no doubt be answered in a follow-up to this story—one that I look forward to reading.

I'm an EJD fan from his very first book. I may be done with him after this one. I actually stopped reading at 90% because I felt nothing could redeem all the violence and cruelty. Not impressed at all. Lots a violence and unnecessary descriptions of the setting. I feel like perhaps he wrote this book to justify writing off a long vacation in Barbados on his taxes.

Missing the old Eric Jerome Dickey. I have been disappointed in the last few books he has written. I love that he is growing as a writer but, I could not get through this craziness of a book.

This would make one heck of a kick ass action move. There was a plethora of suspense, violence, gore, and the blood flowed freely. I'm a bit shocked by the lack of romance. It would appear that my favorite romance author has turned thriller action suspense. The lead character was definitely not someone I would like to meet in real life. Goldie Locks Reaper was downright scary. She was unexpected and surprising. Her execution of violence was thorough to the point of excessive. I'm not sure where the next novel will take us, but I don't wish to cross her path again.

People were raving about this book on twitter...and against my better judgement, I requested it from the library. I haven't read Dickey in a really long time because I pretty much don't enjoy his books. His language just seems gratuitous and shocking.

It's the same in this book by in addition we get rampant violence.

I again was not impressed with his writing. I thought the storyline was "different" but I still hated the book.

This book is action packed. As I began reading, I noticed how face paced the story line moved. It kept me interested from the very first chapter. Eric Jerome Dickey is known for his romance novels, but this has a completely different twist. I really enjoyed reading, "A Wanted Woman" and I look forward to reading more books by Eric Jerome Dickey!

We are family.....A Family You Don't Want To Fuck With.....lol..I know most EJD fans Do Not like the change in his writing style, however for Mi it shows his growth and range of ability to create storylines outside of what most consider to be his norm.....I'm loving these newer stories, like Thieves Paradsie and the Gideon series and i welcome the change.

This is my first read by this author and his twenty first book that I would not have picked up if it was not a book club selection for the month of May. And to tell you the truth I was not looking forward to reading it. So I got the audiobook so I could blow through it a bit faster.
Goldie aka MX-401 the protagonist, is a female assassin who has the ability to transform herself, blend in and take out her target without anyone noticing at all. When she is sent on a mission to kill a top politician everything goes completely wrong and she has to survive on her instincts along with the money in her pocket.
This book is a hot mess. Why? Ok! First, the author never really gives you a reason why this is all happening. The end there is a "tell me what you know" moment but it is so far fetched and random that it is unbelievable. I think you have completely let go of reality to get some enjoyment from this book. Oh wait! I should say you have to be into gore to enjoy this book too! Gore is on every single page and I am talking hard core killing and raping. The author did not gloss over the details and make it poetic in any way shape or form. And did I mention there is alot of violence. ALOT! If you are into gore for the sake for gore, foil language and a pointless story without a purpose, and too many characters you will never ever care about...then this is for you. Not me! Yuck is all I have to say. Sorry this is not a proper review but I have nothing to say about this book that is good. Even the narrators were a mess. The accents were off a bit and all over the place. The use of a male narrator to read a few random chapters if strange.
This was not good at all! Pass.
And where did she get this code name from? You'll never find out and I don't care.

This book was just all over. From what I gather its about a young woman just trying to find herself. It was really gruesome and not like any of his other books. Was really hard to finish or enjoy.

How many female assassin's have you come across in your lifetime. Probably not too many. And that is exactly what the Barbarians are expecting when they send MX-401 out in the field. The woman with a thousand faces. Beautiful enough to entice any man, but dangerous enough to handle herself. When MX-401 aka. Goldilocks Reaper is sent to Trinidad on a mission, she is forced to improvise, due to false intel. Unfortunately, this makes her targets and her bosses very upset. Sent to the island of Barbados to escape Trinidad, she is trapped on this island with no way out. Her company isn't paying her and the LKs from Trinidad are hunting her down. Will she make it out of Barbados? A gripping novel, that will leave you wanting to be a female assassin.

In "A Wanted Woman" no detail was left unturned by Eric Jerome Dickey, the master of thrillers. His in-depth descriptions of the story's locations (Trinidad, Barbados, etc), its complex characters, the dialect of the regions, the music, the food, etc. were spot on. I felt like I was there with Reaper when she was wrecking havoc against all her enemies...and they were aplenty.

Also, there were so many great lines in this novel. Here's one of my favorites from a conversation between Black Jack and Reaper (a woman of many faces who switches accents at a drop of a dime and who is deadly as hell): "Keep a woman broke, keep her under control. Give her just enough to get by. She won't starve to death, but she'll never be able to afford to leave. That's from the handbook on how to be a pimp."

The action was definitely a thrill ride! A must read!

Great book. I am hoping that Mr. Dickey will continue these characters. Black Female Assassins!!!!! You can't go wrong. I am also happy to see the Mr. Dickey changed up on his writing. I had long ago put him down when I felt like I read the same book every time I picked one up. If it wasn't for a friend I would have totally looked this over. Now I am looking forward to what Mr. Dickey has in store.

If you are looking for nonstop action with a roller coaster ride that will leave you speechless then A Wanted Woman by Eric Jerome Dickey is the book for you! The setting is Barbados which already makes for a sexy backdrop and then you add an unlikely assassin and the impeccable writing skills of EJD and that equaled myself up all hours of the night reading. There were so many twists and turns that each page left me wondering what would possibly happen next.

Eric Jerome Dickey has been my favorite author for quite some time now, and I am still in awe of his writing skills. A Wanted Woman reads as if it should be on the big screen and assassin MX-401 is worthy of action hero status just as other strong female characters like Evelyn Salt and Cataleya Restrepo. Whether writing erotica or action, EJD has a way of capturing the female spirit and nuances better than most and that is why he continues to be at the top of my list of authors that NEVER disappoint!!!

Finally, finally, FINALLY! I thought I'd never finish this novel. This was not one of my favorite EJD reads...quite the contrary, actually. I was not a fan of the short choppy writing style in this book. There was also a particularly graphic scene in the last third of the book that was a little too much for my taste as well. I will say that the last maybe 10 - 15 chapters did pique my interest, though. But, the end left me feeling a little less fulfilled because I didn't feel like there was real closure. Not sure if there is a part two that I am missing or not, but not sure I'd read it anyway. However, I will not stop reading EJD books. He is still one of the best out there...his impressive catalogue is proof positive.

I would recommend no one read the audiobook because there is so much going on and the lack of separate voices becomes confusing. I frequently listen to audiobooks but this is one you have to pay a LOT of attention to, to keep up with what is going on.

Because of all that, this book was not too good to me. There were points within the book where I wasn't clear who was killing who and why and it became confusing. I got to the end and understood what happened. The audiobook was not too good, boring reader, spoke in non-emotional tones throughout the entire book and did not keep me interested.

I thought I was picking up a romance/drama and ended up reading the memoirs of an assassin. I enjoyed the ride, being a Caribbean girl, I appreciate the love you shown for the West Indies. I think this is one that HBO or Starz would be interested in producing for TV. Good luck finding a white girl that can pull off all the accents.

EJD wrote the hell out of this book. Murder. More grotesque mayhem than I could stand, but I couldn't turn it off. I couldn't stop listening. And the narrator, Zoe Bell was freakin' amazing as Reaper, MX-401.
