Cross. Mirror. Alux. “Al-ee-oosh!” Find yourself traveling through a porthole and down a tunnel with Bubba and Squirt to the country of Greece! Brother and sister, Bubba and Squirt are on a quest to free their father who is being held captive in a block of ice. To free him, they must defeat a ferocious jaguar-man and a terrifying gargoyle. A treacherous task. Bubba and Squirt are heroic, clever, and resourceful, but danger lurks everywhere. Just when the two are about to meet certain doom. . . .
Opinion: Author Sherry Ellis gives readers an alternate reality in Bubba and Squirt’s Shield of Athena. Ellis’ descriptive language allows the reader to meet beings from Greek mythology and thrusts the reader face-to-face with mythical beasts with magical powers leaving scenes to be played out in the mind’s eye over and over. Bubba and Squirt’s Shield of Athena is part of a series but was read as a standalone book. Ellis does a fantastic job of introducing the backstory; however, having a few additional details about Bubba and Squirt at the beginning of the book would have been ideal. To heighten the reader’s Greek experience, Ellis was thoughtful in providing interesting facts, a glossary, recipes, and maps at the back of the book. Reluctant readers will enjoy the heart-pounding, fast-paced action as will lovers of Greek mythology and folklore. Read Bubba and Squirt’s Shield of Athena. It is legendary!
"Bubba and Squirt's Shield of Athena" is an excellent book full of suspense, mystery, magic, and riddles! The book begins with the backstory from the previous books which is helpful for those who have not read the other books. While it is better to have read the previous books, readers are caught up on what is happening in the beginning. For reference, I read the first two books but did not read the third book but I had a good idea of what was going on in this book. Basically, two siblings travel the world via a magic shovel which created a portal. Bubba is the brother and Squirt is the sister. They take turns narrating the story for each chapter. This makes the book pretty cool to see the point of view of each character. The book is easy and fun to read. It kept me in suspense and I wanted to keep reading. While the siblings solved one mystery, they had to leave before finding their father who has been kidnapped. They finally let their mom in on what is going on. At first she doesn't want them to go back through the portal, but then she decides that next time, she is going along with their grandpa too! I can't wait for the next book to come out! There are interesting facts at the end of the book, a glossary of Greek words, recipes, bibliography, and maps to help readers learn more. Disclosure: I received a PDF copy of this book and I am voluntarily leaving my review to help others find great books to read!
Author Sherry Ellis brings us the next chapter in Bubba and Squirt's adventures. As the two of them continue to fight for their missing father they head to Greece this time. There they run into the oracle of Delphi who is looking for the mask of the great king Agememon. The mask is found in a mislabeled box at another museum. But the mask is taken by a woman whom is later found out to be the gorgon Medusa. Thanks to the oracle they're taken to Athen'a cave where she sends them with Medusa into a fight. During that fight they take town as many of the spiders and a gargoyle is destroyed. The sad thing is that it takes Medusa with it. Then Bubba and Squirt are taken to the location where they can travel home. This is a great novella and I'm looking forward to the next adventure. I highly recommend this book for all adventure fans.
This is the fourth book by award winning author Sherry Ellis about Bubba and Squirt. This time they got through the hole under the tree to free their father, who was captured in the previous tory by an evil gargoyle. They manage to kill him with the help of Medusa, but ran into huge spiders. They killed at many as they could but had to give up looking for their father. A great additional story. Easy to read. I love the story about the two siblings.
With high-stakes and a race against the clock, this latest edition to the Bubba and Squirt series packs excitement, danger, and a touch of history.
Bubba and Squirt are running out of time if they hope to save their father but aren't sure what to do next. Luckily, their Grandfather has an idea and leads them to a festival, where they learn about the shield of Athena. After portaling to Greece, an oracle reveals her visions, which hold clues on how to complete the quest. These aren't only difficult to encipher, but every step of the way, the danger grows.
This is the fourth book in the series, and while the author does give a quick skim of information to help readers settle back in (and this works wonderfully), it is better to read this as a series. We meet Bubba and Squirt where they left off in the previous tale. They need to figure out how to save their father. The tension and concern hit with the very first page and set the atmosphere for the rest of the read. Bubba and Squirt are running out of time, and that stays evident the entire way through. Still, the author doesn't forget to build in the historical goodness, which gives this read its special twist.
It's off to Greece in these pages and that doesn't happen without a bit of cultural and historical information throw in. There are quick facts and explanations dropped in during the tale. These are kept very concise and short so as not to cause any stumbles during the fast-paced plot, but at the end of the book, the main aspects are revisited with a little more information for learning purposes. The world building is also kept to a minimum, allowing the action and characters to drive the adventure forward. Still, small details are dribbled in seamlessly with the action and humor to allow readers to gain a little more insight on the foreign setting and culture. The author makes sure to weave in characters, who accompany Bubba and Squirt, and let a bit more insight on the country slide in naturally as they face one situation after the next.
And let's not forget the dusting of magic. Bubba and Squirt are still figuring out how that all works in as well.
This is a lovely read, especially for the younger end of the middle grade audience. The text fits well to those who have edged out of younger chapter books and are ready for more advanced reads...but aren't quite ready to grab up a thick novel, yet. The chapters are kept short, the action propels from one page to the next, and the sentences don't over-string into huge length. Even reluctant readers won't shy away from this one.
After this exciting read, it's clear that there's more to come, and it will be fun to see where Bubba and Squirt head next. I received a DRC and enjoyed the adventure.
Since returning from Paris, siblings Bubba and Squirt are more desperate than ever to rescue their missing father. Their time is short because their father is encased in ice and guarded by a dangerous foe, but they have some learning to do before they can officially join the fray. Luckily, their grandfather expects that they will find some inspiration at a local Greek festival, where they discover that the shield of Athena may be just what they are looking for. Together, the siblings journey to Greece, befriend some new companions, and face many of their fears while learning more about themselves.
This continuation of Bubba and Squirt’s journey picks up shortly after the first book ends, and it provides just enough foundation to remind readers what happened in the previous installments. While it is best to have read the earlier stories first, this one can still stand on its own thanks to the excellent storytelling and the well-rounded nature of the novel. Written for a middle grade audience, the text is accessible and fast-paced, making this a positive advancement for fans of series fiction like The Magic Treehouse. Short chapters, ample amounts of action, and approachable characters make this book well-suited to its target age group.
At the end of the book, readers find several pieces of back matter that augment the learning that can happen with this book. More detail regarding the artifacts mentioned within the story, a glossary, and even recipes can be perused by readers wishing to dive deeper into this narrative. Bubba and Squirt alternate their perspectives from chapter to chapter and this, coupled with the forward momentum the narrative provides, keeps readers engaged from beginning to end. Poised for a sequel, this book is a positive addition to both its own series and to library collections for adventurous middle grade readers.
Another engaging installment in the author's 'Bubba and Squirt' series . . .
Filled with action, historical facts, quirky characters, and excellent back matter, this fourth book in the author's middle-grade series takes readers to Greece in search of their missing father.
Fans of fantasy and adventure will enjoy the siblings' ability to use clues to fit together this puzzle with the help of some interesting new friends they meet along the way.
Once again, the back matter in this book is excellent. It includes detailed facts about an historical object, a famous historical location, and a list of resources. The glossary includes Greek words, Greek numbers, and the pronunciation of the characters' names. Two Greek recipes for foods mentioned in the story will appeal to young cooks. The back matter culminates with a bibliography and two maps.
This story is clean in language and content. I received a copy of the book from the publisher. My thoughts and opinions shared here are solely my own.
Brother and sister, Bubba and Squirt discovered a portal to other lands in the first in this series "Bubba and Squirt's Big Dig to China." In their last adventure "Bubba and Squirt's City of Bones," they found their missing magician father, but he was frozen in a block of ice and being guarded Kanaima, a creature that is part jaguar and part man. Determined to save their father, they go through the portal again and land in Greece where they get help from some auspicious characters, including the Oracle of Delphi.
If your young readers enjoy mythology, magic, action and adventure, they will love this series! I also appreciate getting a taste of modern society in each of these places with sprinkles of the local language, landmarks, and culture. With fast-paced action, even the most reluctant readers will be enthralled.
It’s a quest to save their dad, and Bubba and Squirts find themselves transported to Athens, Greece, where they follow a set of clues and riddles to find the Shield of Athena. This is a cute, little, magical adventure. The classical figure, Medusa, makes an appearance and becomes an ally to the kids. I liked that her story was pretty accurate to the Greek myth.
