Well, best book ever, I can read the same passage over and over and gain new insights, the depths of God's Word are amazing, I hope people read and understand the whole context (i.e., don't take things out of context!), the historical context, understand the WHOLE scope, the Word is powerful and an anchor for life...and not just living for yourself, a guide. I really liked reading it in chronological order, a certain amount each day, and at the end of the year, you have journeyed through the whole book. So the prophets and poetic books are put in their historical context which gives additional insight and a vividness to the whole narrative (not all historic books together, then prophetic).
I read this Bible until Ecclesiastes. But I am going to drop it. I don't think it is a bad Bible but it is a stumbling block for ME. I am reading it and in the back of my mind "This isn't the right order." Proverbs, my personal most read chapter in the Bible, took me ages to get through because it divided into categories. Constantly I am reading but I am not gaining anything because "This isn't the right order."
So I am going to pull my old trusty Bible off the shelf to read and I am going to give this Bible away. I pray that it goes to someone who needs it.
This book was heavily edited by F. LaGard Smith. He put the verses in chronological order. I red this uniquely-edited Bible (ISBN 1-56507-524-2) several times over as many years through the mid- and late 90s. Minus one star because (no spoiler, in fact, quite the opposite: reader beware) F. LaGard Smith claims the crucifixion happened on Thursday, not Friday, to which I simply say, “Pfui!”
Other than that one peculiar editorial claim, it is an excellent resource.
I found this a good way to read the whole Bible in a year. It uses the NIV translation and precedes most sections with a short commentary. Instead of presenting the Bible in the usual order of books and chapters, it arranges it in chronological order.
I remember going to christian publications and buying this bible. I have this same bible with a different cover. (I have the original) I bought this bible more than 25 years ago.
