I first found out about this book through a WWII historical fiction list on GoodReads. Yet, after finishing, this book reads more as a moving memoir of survival and rescue than anything else. It’s not written nor formatted as a historical fiction to my eyes at all. So keep that in mind if you’re looking to dive into this one.
Now Olga’s journey across war-torn Eastern and Central Europe was engrossing. She experienced some horrifying events and conditions, all in the name of love for Julius or family. In places, she seems to have only survived due to luck or just by the skin of her teeth. Some of the places her journey took her to were just jaw-dropping, especially the camp of Dachau. It really brought it home some of the events she experienced, how topsy-turvy and chaotic Europe was at that timeframe.
Olga herself was resourceful in getting out of some of her experiences, and I found myself more and more drawn into her story as the book progressed. There were times where I question her thought processes or actions, but I’m not sure I’m really one to judge that since I wasn't there. Either way, reading about her struggle to find out the fate of the man she loved kept me spellbound. Even after finding him, life wasn't kittens and rainbows. The end of the memoir is just as astounding event-wise as the rest of Olga’s WWII experience.
If you’re looking for a unique and engaging WWII memoir, I’d recommend this one. It tells the story of an amazing and resourceful woman who wouldn't let a little thing like a world war get in the way of love. But if you’re looking for a historical fiction, try another selection as this isn't fictional. Still an amazing book all around.

Nunca se como clasificar las biografía o libros sobre experiencias personales por lo tanto voy con la "nota media".
Una historia terrible en un contexto de locura total en donde la normalidad no existía, yo realmente no se como se puede pasar por tanto, no se como los seres humanos somos capaces de tanto ya sea en el buen sentido o en le malo. No dejo de sorprenderme de la capacidad de destrucción que tiene el hombre.
Esta mujer pasó por muchas cosas y yo me sentía tan frustrada leyendo su historia y la de todos los que la acompañaron en el camino que me daban ganas de gritar, de romper algo, y el final....bueno....al final lloré, que impotencia que me generó, que manera de joder la vida de tanta gente....no es un mal final pero yo no lo esperaba.
Obviamente ninguna historia contada sobre la segunda guerra mundial es de color de rosas y a mi me parece que mientras sigamos leyendo e informándonos sobre todas estas atrocidades podemos evitar que vuelvan a suceder, me enloquece el pensar en todas aquellas personas que vivían indiferentes a lo que pasaba a su alrededor, no lo puedo terminar de comprender.

Come si dice a Roma: ho rosicato! Non può non aver più visto suo marito per colpa di un padre che neanche le voleva bene...Olga nonostante non dovesse nulla al padre è andata a trovarlo perchè era malato ed è rimasta fregata letteralmente e non ha più potuto vivere la sua storia con suo marito Julius dopo che aveva rischiato tutto per lui!!

Ma purtroppo non è una storia inventata e la povera Olga ha dovuto arrendersi alla realtà della vita ed accettare il suo destino che non ha sempre un lieto fine come succede in un libro...

Es la historia real de un amor, es increíble todo lo que las personas son capaces de hacer para encontrar o salvar al amor de tu vida de los peores lugares que hubo en la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Un libro recomendable, pero no deben esperarse una novela ya que su narración es similar a cualquier libro autobiográfico, pero no por eso deja de ser excelente ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.

4,5 estrellas. Una historia de amor real impresionante, aunque desgraciadamente el amor no es como las novelas de final feliz.A veces se impone la realidad con toda su crudeza y no siempre el amor verdadero es el definitivo.

When I read articles about Olga's journey earlier, I took her for a feisty surefooted woman who knew what she was doing. I was, thus, in for a surprise. Unfurled at the turn of each page was a barely twenty year old girl who, gripped with an insane love for a man who once professed his love for her, leapt into the eyes of the Nazi storm. Of course, fear for her life accompanied her throughout her journey. However, her love for Julius emerged stronger.
They ultimately managed to find love in the most hopeless of places at the most hopeless of times. Only to lose it forever.

Ma ho una critica molto severa da fare.
Non so come sia stato pubblicizzato il libro in Gran Bretagna, ma sulla copertina dell'edizione italiana, sotto il titolo, è scritto "sono entrata a Dachau di mia volontà per salvare l'uomo che amavo".
Pagine del libro: 305. Pagine dedicate a Dachau: 16.
Olga non è entrata a Dachau come prigioniera di sua volontà, come il sottotitolo fa supporre. Ci ha lavorato come impiegata per poter consultare i registri, dopodiché se n'è andata.
Nulla toglie alla sua esperienza personale, il libro è, ripeto, piacevole, una testimonianza di vita raccontata con molta delicatezza. Ma non è la testimonianza di una sopravvissuta a Dachau, è un resoconto del suo pellegrinaggio in Europa durante la guerra. Sono indignata perché ritengo che il sottotitolo dia un'idea ingannevole del contenuto. Il libro sarebbe di sicuro più apprezzabile se fosse pubblicizzato per quello che è. Anche la quarta di copertina è dedicata esclusivamente a Dachau. Anche la copertina riporta la foto di un campo di concentramento. Ritengo l'errore molto grave: a quanto pare chi ha scritto sottotitolo e quarta di copertina o non ha letto il libro (e allora ha svolto il suo lavoro con molta poca serietà) o ha deciso di puntare su Dachau per vendere. Mi sembra quantomeno disprezzabile sminuire così una testimonianza di vita, che sembra essere importante solo ed esclusivamente perchè "è stata a Dachau". La storia merita di essere letta, ma questa pubblicità ingannevole la trovo indecente.

So this one seemed a bit of a smaller read, after trawling through several bricks lately. Several nights of coughing have left me with very limited sleep, and rather than trying to get back to the zzzzs, it was easier to sit up and read.
Hmmm, I'm not so sure of the front review that calls this "The Greatest Untold Love Story of World War Two", for me a bit of an exageration, as it was more a love story of the time. Olga is just 20 when the Gestapo seize her fiance, and she sets off to find him, not expecting to end up in several concentration camps in her search. One has to admire the risks she took to find Julius, without any help from her family and searching on her own, things could have turned badly at so many turns.
Then when things seem to be settling down after the war, more changes occur and they are lost to each other again. Stories like this one, always make me wonder how I would cope in similar circumstances, would I take risk, cross borders, work for Nazis, run from border guards - who knows? It was nice though to know that she did finally find some happiness in her life, after such a tough start. 3/5

E' impossibile non rimanere ugualmente colpiti dalle accurate descrizioni che si aprono immediatamente dinanzi al lettore: poter assistere alle singole e mutevoli ambientazioni, poter provare quell'insieme sconvolgente di paure e difficoltà che Olga è riuscita a superare così giovane, incosciente ed inesperta, sola in un contesto per nulla favorevole ed indubbiamente ostile e, fino alla fine, vivere quel profondo amore, giovane ed incerto, ma così forte da condurla lontano dalle sue sicurezze verso un futuro pieno di ombre, pericoli ed avversità.

Para empezar hay que decir que no es exactamente una novela, sino el testimonio de la autora, o se podría llamar una novela autobiográfica, abarca desde su infancia hasta aproximadamente el año 1985. La historia es dura, contiene drama, dolor, bondad, esperanza, entrega, ilusión, valentía,además de relatar insensateces( por amor,o con otros pretextos) que a veces los seres humanos realizamos sin medir la consecuencias. Hay que pensar que vivió en una época convulsa, con guerra de por medio. Es un libro que no deja indiferente a nadie seguro, advertir que no es para todo el mundo.

This book is an evocative memoir of events who's scars will never fade from European history and perceptions, and adds a personal experience which should be unbelievable if it didn't ring utterly true. Olga Watkins,and her book,should be household names, and yet they're not:I only found it by chance when going through the shelves of my library. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Though be warned,it will stay with you long after you put it down.

This is the story of a 18 years old girl. A very lucky girl, pretty much inlove... in the middle of the WWII looking for her beloved one. Dont get me wrong, I know this might sound as I cheesy story (another one) but is not. You wont be wasting your time if you decide to read it, I promise it will let something on you in the end. Also, its entertaining and easy to go.

Excelente historia. Es difícil saber cuantas personas vivieron algo similar a Olga en el afán de reencontrarse con sus seres queridos durante la guerra, es probable que no todos mantuvieron la esperanza y se rindieron en el camino.

Me ha gustado, pero le ha faltado emocionarme y engancharme más.
Aunque es una historia real, está escrita de manera un poco "aséptica". Me ha sorprendido el final, eso sí. No me lo esperaba y me ha quedado un buen sabor de boca :-)

El libro nos cuenta el viaje de Olga, una joven muy valiente en busca de su prometido arrestado por la Gestapo. Viajará por Yugoslavia, Hungría, Austria y Alemania, durante la segunda Guerra Mundial.
A lo largo del libro la autora nos cuenta toda su vida, empezando por una infancia dura, en la que perdió a su madre cuando era una niña y que vivía con un padre que no la quería. Cuando conoce a su prometido, todo cambia para ella. Porque sí, Olga nuestra protagonista, es la autora del libro.

Nach einer schwierigen Kindheit und Jugend in Jugoslawien, lernt Olga mit 20 Jahren Ihren zukünftigen Verlobten, den ungarischen Diplomaten Julius Koreny kennen. Der 2 Weltkrieg ist bereits in vollem Gange und rückt immer näher. Eines Tages kehrt Julius von einer Diplomatenreise nach Budapest nicht zurück nach Zagreb - er ist scheinbar verhaftet worden aber niemand weiß wohin er verschleppt wurde und was ihm vorgeworfen wird.
Es beginnt eine gefährliche und leidbringende Suche für die junge Olga. Sie ist 2 Jahre unterwegs in Ungarn, Österreich und Deutschland, um Ihren Geliebten Julius zu finden und taucht dabei tief in die furchtbaren Alpträume des 2 Weltkrieges ein.

Ich hatte in etwa ein Vorstellung was mich in dem Buch erwartet, diese ist um Längen übertroffen worden.
Am Anfang begleiten wir Olga durch Teile ihrer Kindheit und Jugend, die schon genug Stoff für ein eigenes Buch verdient hätte.
Sie lernt Julius kennen und innerhalb weniger Seiten wird die aufblühende Liebe und telefonische Verlobung erzählt.
Zu dem Zeitpunkt als die Vorbereitung der Suche begann, hatte ich allerdings keinerlei Verständnis für die große Aktion die nun folgen sollte. Die innerliche Verbindung der beiden, ist durch die wenigen gemeinsamen Seiten in dem Buch, bei mir nicht angekommen - bis dahin zumindest nicht...
Das änderte sich aber stetig mit jeder gelesenen Seite. Es ist so wunderbar geschrieben, dass man die Zeit vergisst und völlig in die Geschichte hineingleitet, plötzlich alles mitfühlt, was Olga erleiden muss.
Alles ist sehr bildhaft beschrieben, sämtliche Leiden und auch Freuden und es lässt einen am Ende so sehr beeindruckt von Olga, aber auch fassungslos über die Härte des Krieges und dessen Folgen zurück.
Zudem war es interessant die Kriegsgeschehnisse aus jugoslawischer und ungarischer Sicht zu lesen. So vieles wußte ich noch nicht.
Das Cover finde ich besonders toll, es passt sehr zum Inhalt und mischt mit den Farben das triste grau/schwarz des Krieges mit dem hoffnungsvollen rot der Liebe.
Gespikt ist das Ganze mit einigen Fotos und Dokumenten.
Eine wahnsinnig mitreissende Geschichte, die wirklich so passiert ist und jedem die Augen öffnet, der sie noch pikiert zu Boden blickend abwendet.

5 ⭐️ Simplemente me ha encantado y lo recomiendo muchísimo.
Me parece alucinante que esta novela sea una autobiografía. Todo lo que es capaz de hacer el ser humano por amor incluso sintiendo miedo.
Una de las cosas que más me gustó de esta autobiografía no es solo el trayecto sino que es real! Valga la redundancia. Me explico. La realidad es que no es una novela en la que lucha por encontrar su amor, lo encuentra y happy ending. Es una historia real y así también lo es su final y su happy ending no es el tuyo (no el que tú esperas leer para satisfacerte como lector).
La autora es una mujer valiente e inteligente. A menudo disfruto mucho este tipo de lecturas dónde nos encontramos que en la realidad la mujer es un sexo fuerte con un alto nivel de supervivencia y lucha.

Me parece alucinante que esta novela sea una autobiografía. Todo lo que es capaz de hacer el ser humano por amor incluso sintiendo miedo.
Una de las cosas que más me gustó de esta autobiografía no es solo el trayecto sino que es real! Valga la redundancia. Me explico. La realidad es que no es una novela en la que lucha por encontrar su amor, lo encuentra y happy ending. Es una historia real y así también lo es su final y su happy ending no es el tuyo (no el que tú esperas leer para satisfacerte como lector).
