The Woman in White

Rate this book
A level 6 Oxford Bookworms Library graded reader. Retold for Learners of English by Richard G. Lewis

The woman in white first appears at night on a lonely heath near London and is next seen at a grave-side in Cumberland. Who is she? Where has she come from, and what is her history? She seems alone and friendless, frightened and confused. And it seems she knows a secret – a secret that could bring ruin and shame to a man who will do anything to keep her silent.

This famous mystery thriller by Wilkie Collins has excitement, suspense, romance, and a plot that twists and turns on every page.

Actually I really enjoyed the story but I'm sad that the version I read was a simplified one (I borrowed it from my English teacher because I wanted to try to read a classic in English and I didn't want to start spending money on it without knowing if I would be able to read it, because of the language that it is used). So many things were left out, the events happened to fast due to the simplified version, which made me sad and, the language was simple. I even thought of reread it and this time it would be the regular version, but the regular one has something like 736 pages and that's huge to read in English and it's also too soon to reread it.
I have to say that I really hated Mr Fairlie, the Count Fosco and Sir Percival! Such a hateful characters. I loved Marian and Mr Hartright, what a lovely man. And Marian is so brave and sweet.

A well written page-turner with a complex yet interesting story. Slightly disappointed with the climax though it was the most practical solution, coz I was keenly waiting one last meeting between Walter and Count Fosco and How Walter gets his revenge. Overall it's a good thriller novel.

Really falls short of the original. The relationships seem hollow, and the villains are so tame and toned down!

#1 Question: we have many events in our life. when we read some books, we can learn some new things or we can remember that we already experience this hapening. In my life, I saw a person who wants to steal others money. Than, he tried to deceive him friends like in the story. he gave his friends a paper and said him like sign up on the paper that is important business. Him purpose to steal money from his friends. But he could not do that because polise catch him.

#2 question: the women in white and love or money are two different books. They have some same part which both of them explaine to us about money. People can do everything for get money. in love or money, there is a rich old woman. Her friend want to take her money. so they have some plan to steal money. I think this way same as both of them.

This book gave me goosebumps for the first time in months!

I must admit that I already predicted the plot when Marian heard the conversation between the Count and Sir Percival. But still, the excitement and suspense at the later pages of the book was just amazing. I like how clever both the Count and Walter is and how the latter got all of the evidence.

The whole Pesca, Fosco and brotherhood thing was brilliant too!

Looks like I'll have to read another work of Collins' some time soon

Great story, great plot. I had to read it for my English class. I first thought it was like the tipical classic novel in which there are misterious evil things but they never tell you what they are (?).

Nevermind, it surprised me in a nice way. It was very interesting and there was suspense all the time. You could never know what to expect from the story.

It is a fastmoving story. I also watched the series based on this story. It is very beneficial to watch film/series before reading. Oxford books are always the best, paper quality and the size is ergonomic.

La historia no es mala, but it's not my cup of tea.
