Commander Will Coburn's NCIS team is investigating the carjacking and assault of a young Marine and his wife. All evidence points to Bobby Lee Gant, son of the notorious criminal and suspected international drug smuggler Victor Gant. When NCIS agent Shel McHenry is wounded during a botched arrest, the team rallies around him even as Victor threatens retribution.
Meanwhile, in west Texas, Shel's father, Tyrel McHenry, struggles with his own demons as buried secrets from a war long since fought come to light. The path he chooses will change his—and Shel's—life forever.

Disclaimer: I have been reading and reviewing for over a decade, and in that time, I have grown and changed a lot. BLOOD LINES by Mel Odom, I am sad to say, is the last in the NCIS series. What a shame! His NCIS series has been so entertaining I hate to see it end. Though this series veers from the action/romance genre that I prefer, it didn’t deter me from wanting to continue the series.
In BLOOD LINES, NCIS agent Shel (Shelton) McHenry finds himself embroiled with Victor Gant, a drug lord who is seeking revenge, Shel being the target. Shel –being the proactive Marine type–goes after Victor when Victor levels threats against Shel’s family. Shel has to come to terms with the strained relationship he has with his father, Tyrel McHenry, and finds out along the way, a secret his father has kept from him for over forty years.
Could Victor Gant have really known his father? And is what Victor Gant’s saying about Shel’s father true? If so, it could change Tyrel, Shel, and his entire family forever.
BLOOD LINES is filled with action and emotion. The Christian influence in this book is very low key. Shel’s brother, Don, is a preacher and tries to reach out to both his father, who’s closed himself off from his sons, and Shel with his stubborn streak and unbending attitude. Though we know Shel from the previous books as the hardcore, loner Marine, BLOOD LINES reveals the emotionally hurt youth behind the man. We see his vulnerabilities, and the reason for his arms-length attitude that keeps people from seeing the real man behind the machine.
This was my favorite of the series. I like the story, and I felt I knew the characters better. It kept me engaged; I wanted to know what would happen next. I hope this is not the last in the series. I still want to know Remy's history.
This is the third of a trilogy dealing with an NCIS unit stationed at the Marine base in North Carolina. This story mostly featured Shel McHenry, the Marine attached to the unit, who is forced to kill a suspect in self defense in Charlotte. The suspect was wanted on connection with a carjacking in which a young Marine was killed. After the shootout in a tattoo parlor, the suspect's father, the head of a drug dealing motorcycle gang, vows revenge on McHenry.
After reading the first two books, I already knew the characters and easily fell deep into the story. It also takes a look at McHenry's family, with his widowed father having a Vietnam connection with the gang leader. The Marine's brother is a preacher in Texas, with religion playing a large part in the story. Some readers may be turned off a bit with the frequent references to God, but the story does a good job on its own.
Rating 3.5, rounded up. Mel Odom writes well. I have read other books that he has written and he does weave a good story. I have enjoyed this book and this series. I am not as into names and descriptions of weaponry (all three books) or play-by-play autopsies (first two books but especially book 2). Once in a while in all three books, things just happen too conveniently, or without explanation. He does keep a good pace in the stories that keeps me reading. I am disappointed that Odom did not follow up with stories about the rest of the team, particularly Remy. I had the most questions about his background that were never answered. However, since this book was written in something like 2009, I doubt Odom plans to round this series out with anything else.
This book is the third in the series. Shel, the marine and will, the SEAL go to arrest someone. In a tattoo parlour. All goes belly up and shel is badly injured. Seems the father of the boy they went to arrest was know to ashes father in Vietnam during the war.
Shels father has never spoken of those days, and the team end up working the case together. I quite enjoyed the story, but I did think it was a bit over the rop to believe a heavily pregnant pathologist team member happily trotted alongside trained military men in the jungle heat and nothing was said of her when they came under fire. Apart from that it’s a good easy read.
I'm a NCIS fan and have the series dvd's. I also seen the cover pages of this series by Mel Odom and put them on my TRB. Now I had the opportunity on ebook from the library. An episode on tv takes 42 minutes but reading this book took a little longer with life happening. At least you can return to the page when you stop each time. Interesting cold case story and I do like the team bringing different skills to investigate. I liked Joe's character and not sure what it was that appealed.. maybe as a dad to his daughter.. a longing that I missed out. 10 years old now but I think still worth the read if you are a fan!!
Book. The characters were will developed. The story kept you turning the pages. I have the first two books on cds. Hoping this book also goes into a CD so I can have the complete series on audio cd. I will be reading more from this author. Clean book
Gets kind of complicated and sort of track occassionally but still a good read. Been there, done that, still have a nightmare or two, but like Tyrel, too onery to give up.
The series especially this book kept me riveted and I couldn’t hardly put it down! Well written and I use the word redemption to describe all three books!
Perfect for : Personal reading, Adventure/Suspense fans, Fans of NCIS and CSI should really enjoy this book
In a nutshell: This is a great book for action and suspense fans. The story will keep your interest from start to finish. This is the last book in the NCIS series (dare we hope for another similar series?). The main character is Shel McHenry, who is investigating a carjacking and assault. He becomes the target of Victor Gant, a hardened criminal, when an arrest goes bad and Victor's son is killed. Throughout the story, Shel discovers that there are some skeleton's in the family closet, and his relationship with his father may never be the same! While it is listed as Fiction/Christian/General, the Christian values are not preached or forced on the reader, rather they are very subtle and help to support the storyline. Loved it!
Extended Review: Characters: I did not want this story to end. The characters come to life, and Shel and his father develop very nicely through the course of the book. I thought Tyrel was very rough around the edges and strange for a father, but it made the story that much better! My only pet peeve is that I don't know too many adults who still call their parents Mommy or Daddy - it's either Mom or Dad, so occasionally it bothered me that Shel called is father Daddy pretty consistently, but hey - ultimately it added to the charm of the family.
Story-Line: Fast-paced with a few twists at key moments. I found myself holding my breath in a few places.
Readability: The 62 chapters (don't let that scare you!) and epilogue help to create an easy transition between scenes in the book. The book was easy to read, and the author did a good job of explaining technical things throughout the book.
Overall: A great book to keep your attention - I loved the change of pace and the resolution of the story!
This was not a bad ending to this trilogy & over all I'm glad I finished it. The story was focused on Shel & his family this time and many of the other family story lines were not finished up well.
Musings from the middle of the book:
2 things so far: 1: why do two grown men still refer to their father as "daddy"? I find that just a little strange...if it was a female character maybe but I'm just not buying it especially when they're not all that close. 2: why introduce and give a lit of detail about a bit character if you're just going to off them a couple pages later? Not cool Mel, not cool. It's still an okay book & since it's the third in a trilogy I feel like I need to finish this book already.
*turns out the character didn't die but didn't reappear in the story. They were just referred to.
Do you enjoy the NCIS TV shows? If you do, you will really enjoy this book. If you have never seen the show you will still really like this action packed story. It is book three in Mel Odom’s NCIS series.
The characters in the story are believable and the story line is engaging. I found this book hard to put down and easy to recommend to anyone looking for a book filled with intrigue.
The story takes place in North Carolina and Texas. It follows Commander Will Coburn and his investigating team as they try to narrow down the suspects in a carjacking and assult.
This book is worth picking up and reading, you will enjoy the adventure!
I was given this book by christianreveiwofbooks.com to review.
Saw this book in the "New Section" in the library and found the blurb interesting. Mel Odom is a new to me author and was excited. However, not cool that I just saw this is the last of a series. So far, it hasn't been a big issue for me to pick up with this book. I am enjoying the book and for some reason I like Shel. The anger part would be hard to handle in a close relationship. (I am a girl and often look at the book's male characters and wonder what they would be like as boyfriends or guy friends.). Looking forward to see how it plays out. (3/6/16)
Awesome ending to this series. Loved everything about them, and am glad I read them a second time. This one may be the best of the three, and centered more on one of my favorites on the team: Shelton.
Great book. I did enjoy this even tho it didn't have any romance in the story. Shel, a NCIS officer investigates a carjacking. They have finally found suspect bobby lee grant. In being in bobby shel has to shot him dead. Bobby father, victor a notorious criminal is out for shel blood.
