Scott Snyder is the Eisner and Harvey Award winning writer on DC Comics Batman, Swamp Thing, and his original series for Vertigo, American Vampire. He is also the author of the short story collection, Voodoo Heart, published by the Dial Press in 2006. The paperback version was published in the summer of 2007.
Well i know the court of the owls from the tv series, so i know they actually exist. But so far batman doesn't, even after being attacked by one of their agents. I don't really feel great about that other rich guy, whose parents were killed when he was young, i feel that there is more to him than the writer is letting on right now.
"Beware The Court of Owls. that watches all the time. ruling Gotham from a shadow perch. behind granite and lime. They watch you at your hearth. they watch you in your bed. speak not a whispered word of them. or they'll send The Talon for your head."
Ok now I remember, I saw it in Nigthwing. I should have read this first. But anyway. "I'm the only legend Gotham needs" That was pretty cool. The monologue really awesome, he telling us the story about the Gotham tower, the guardians and their meanings, that was pretty great.
I like this version of Batman, but every villain in this run is the same. Dead mom inducing some form of psychosis, felt repetitive on that front.
A lot of graphic novelists want the art to tell the story in each panel, but Snyder likes to use dialogue. It can take up space in each panel, but I appreciate the dialogue bubbles more than most.
Batman & Commissioner Gordon annalyze the corpse of the John Doe. The emblem on the throwing knives matches one found on the man's wisdom tooth, which reminds Gordon of the old tale of the Court of Owls, which Batman shoots down. When confronted with the DNA evidence, Dick mentions that the week prior, the haggard John Doe had warned him that they were all in danger.
Episode 4: Trust Fall
Bruce is attacked a man dressed as an owl and stabbed multiple times. He tells him that "The Court of Owls sentence him to die" before kicking him through a window of Wayne Tower. The assassin mentions how he "loves killing Waynes", before Bruce is able to grab the 13th guardian statue along the tower, while the assassin plummets to the street below. However, he is seen to be alive afterwards.

Just reread Batman #2 by Scott Snyder, and it still holds up incredibly well. The tension ramps up quickly as the mystery deepens and the seeds of the Court of Owls are sown with real menace. Snyder does a great job building suspense while keeping Bruce firmly grounded in detective mode.
Greg Capullo’s art continues to shine—dynamic, moody, and packed with detail that makes Gotham feel alive and dangerous.
Even on a reread, it’s clear how carefully this arc is crafted. The pacing, tone, and atmosphere are all pitch-perfect. A strong follow-up that pulls you deeper into one of Batman’s best modern stories.
Batman investigates a string of murders tied to an old Gotham nursery rhyme about the “Court of Owls.” The tone turns investigative and eerie as Bruce refuses to believe in old myths.
Snyder masterfully builds tension through denial — Bruce’s arrogance and belief that he knows Gotham blinds him to the danger creeping closer. Capullo’s artwork shines with gothic energy, particularly in the crime scene visuals and shadowed cityscapes.
The legend of the Court takes shape — a secret society manipulating Gotham from the shadows.
i absolutely LOVED how Bruce talks about the architecture of Wayne tower in the beginning and finishes his story at the end by talking about a guardian statue on the side of the building which he grabs onto as he’s falling in his fight against one of the Owls that saves his life. Batman and Gordon investigate the John Doe, and Dick Grayson’s DNA is under his nails… the Court of Owls has sentenced Bruce Wayne to death

wow!!! better than the first in several ways, mainly in the way that it balances world building and keeping the plot going. bruce is such a fun and interesting character, and the court of owls is shaping up to be a great adversary. i really enjoyed this.
This is another issue I know I read nearly five years back. Bruce Wayne is attacked by the Court of Owls, and there is some good dialogue regarding legends.
Bruce Wayne is sentenced to die by The Court Of Owls, and the guy they sent is good, really good.. What's Batman gonna do about it? Did the legend suddenly come to life?
I actually hate the entire Court of Owls story line, but the 2016 Rebirth storyline was boring me so I came over to the 2011 New 52 storyline - I'll persevere. But yeah, hate it.
