Tormented by dreams and visions from an early age, Emily Dunhurst battled her way through childhood, missed the excitement of teenage years, yet still managed to arrive in her twenties with some shard of sanity.
But, when the Angel of Death appears at her grandmother’s bedside, Emily’s world is remolded in pain and worry. Her ability to see otherworldly creatures is the only way to stop the Creator’s Servant—and save her family.
However, Emily soon finds out that angels are hard to stop.
Truth be told, at first I did not like it! Though the characters were good, something kept holding me back in terms of really relating to the story and losing myself in it.
Let me explain, in Angel of Death we have 2 main characters: one human Emily and one divine Azrael! They are both going through their story lines and journeys side by side and it is only when they finally meet across time that things finally take a good turn (at least for me) and things start happening!
All of my beloved readers, know my love for fast paced stories no matter the genre and my abiding love for some action. As I said above, at first I did not like it, it was for me way too slow paced and I kept telling the book to get to it already! I am an impatient one, what can I say?
However, just as we hit midway through the book where Azrael and Emily meet and we have our first confrontation that I am happy once more!
Thank you Jesus (Maybe I should say the Creator instead?)!
It feels like the first half was made to set all the characters and give us a solid background; but because of my personal preferences, it felt like it took forever!
Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with it, it is just that I need stuff to happen! (I am a weirdo like that!!)
I really loved the story, we dive deep into angel lore (and we know my never-ending love for anything with angels in it!), the characters were wonderful and I have to give big thumbs up for Emily and more for her Grandma!
The love and relationship between the two gave so much added depth to not only the characters but brought balance to the fact that dear Azrael is more “cold”. I am using the quotes here because it is true and it isn’t at the same time…
If you are wondering what I am on about, well there is no choice but to read Angel of Death!
Now that I am writing this, and taking the ending into account, I do believe there is a lot of plot points that remain wide open and I am a girl that needs closure.
So does that mean that there could be a follow up book? Not wanting to give things away, but I can see clearly a huge battle ahead and a certain someone needs his ass kicked big time!!! (you will know who I am talking about when you read the book!)
Though I wasn’t crazy about it at the beginning, I am deeply pleased that the book turned around and satisfied my need for some battles! It is really good and I see a lot of potential for a series!
I won a copy of Angel of Death in a Goodreads giveaway from the author. I entered the contest because the cover is beautifully designed and the subject matter seemed enticing. This review is entirely my own opinion and I did not receive anything for it other than a copy of the book.
I normally don't write reviews for books before I finish them, but I feel like I needed to make an exception in the case of Angel of Death as it will be a while before I finish it due to school, work, and other matters. I will update this review accordingly once I finish and especially if my opinion changes at all.
Angel of Death is a very well-rounded story. It follows Emily, a young misunderstood girl plagued by night terrors and is interspersed with the tale of Aquino, a missionary.
This book is full of comprehensive descriptions of a brilliantly imagined universe and the driven, lovable characters that inhabit it. I was surprised that Eamonn Hickson is a self-published author, as he writes so well.
However, for some reason, I find myself struggling to get through the story, possibly due to the pacing being slower than I expected. This is also just a matter of personal preference, but I have found the alternating chapters make it more difficult to read, as right when I would get into one part of the story, it would be changed completely. I'm sure this will resolve itself in time.
If I were to offer up any small constructive criticism, it would be for the author to condense his usage of commas (there are a whole bunch, which can get distracting) and to be sure not to blend past, present, and future tenses to avoid confusing the reader. Otherwise, it's very enjoyable to read even though it takes a while to get into it.
In conclusion, I would recommend this novel as it is very well-written and packed with sensory descriptions and action. I wholeheartedly believe my inability to devour it in one sitting was a matter of personal preference toward Emily's chapters, which have been less frequent and shorter, and available time.
Thank you, Eamonn Hickson, you are doing a great job (from a fellow writer!)
I wasn't sure if I was going to enjoy this one or not, but I did. Emily has always seen demons, shadows, or whatever you want to call them. The only one who believed her was her Grandmother. The Angel of Death has had an interesting time himself making enemies and doing a job that was not given to him. When he meets Emily at her dying Grandmother's bedside, neither of them are the same. Emily is determined that he won't take anymore of her family but he gets his orders from a higher power...right? Ok, from the get go, I'm a Christians with specific beliefs about angels, demons, heaven, hell, etc. That being said, this is a fiction book, and a well written one at that! The author does a great job of giving us a vivid picture of hell and heaven. The traitor made me so mad, but so did the lack of thought on the part of some of the angels. I loved how Emily completely loved her family even if they weren't that supportive of her through her problems. The demons are creepy! Angel of Death has a story all his own, but he chose to be good, even when the 'good' weren't good to him. Overall, a good, original story! I rate this a 4/5. I would love to read what the author comes up with next!
Thank you to the author/publisher for the review copy of this book. I received this book in exchange for an honest review and the opinions stated above are 100% mine.

But here is a snippet and overview of what I thought:
Overall, I liked this book. The writing was really good. I loved it, the plot, however was a very slow but well thought out. I liked the characters, but I wasn't particularly attached to them. Thank you so much to Rock Star Tours for providing me with a copy go this book!
I feel kind of bad giving this book 2 stars because I enjoyed most of it. Unfortunately that enjoyment was marred by a huge streak of both good and evil being dumb. Most of this will be hugely spoilery, so don't peek unless you're sure you wont mind.
Along with my rant I found that as the book progressed the dialogue became a little choppy and people were doing a lot of exclaiming! when they didn't need to! They ended up coming across as very surprised when I think they were merely being curious or asking a question.
Which is all a bit of a shame really because I actually quite liked the main characters for the most part and thought they showed a few interesting qualities, even if they weren't the absolutely most well-rounded individuals I've ever read about.
Overall I'd say that perhaps give this book a go, especially if you like the judeo-christian variety of angels and demons, and see what you think. My problems with the book are actually quite minor for a lot of people who just want to sit back and read about a struggle between good and evil and it may not be an issue for you.
I really wasn't sure that weather I'm going to like it or I'm going to be dissapointed but I'm glad I read this book. It was really interesting book that every page was a mystery.
