JASON MANNING was born and continues to live in Texas. An avid reader and history buff from an early age, he favored the works of C.S. Forester, Jack London, Bret Harte, Ernest Haycox, John Steinbeck and William Faulkner. He started writing short stories when he was twelve. He is currently writing his 54th novel, to be published in 2016 by St. Martin's Press.

His first book, Killer Gray, was published in 1979; he did not write his second novel, Gunsmoke on the Sierra Line, until ten years later; it was published in 1989 by Zebra Books. He wrote five more titles for Zebra, Revenge in Little Texas, Texas Helltown and Showdown at Seven Springs among them. From 1990 until 1996 he wrote fourteen novels for HarperCollins using the pseudonym "Hank Edwards," including Gun Glory, Lawless Land, Lady Outlaw and Steel Justice in The Judge series, and the stand-alones Ride for Rimfire, Thirteen Notches, Apache Sundown and Gray Warrior. He also wrote two other westerns for HarperCollins under the pen name "Dale Colter." Beginning in 1993, Dutton Signet began publishing Manning's longer historical/western novels, such as High Country, Green River Rendezvous, Flintlock, Promised Land, American Blood, The Black Jacks, The Marauders; the six Gordon Hawkes novels -- among them Mountain Massacre and Mountain Courage; and the six Barlow novels -- The Long Hunters, War Lovers and Apache Shadow among them. In addition, he wrote six westerns for St. Martin's Press -- the Ethan Payne trilogy (Frontier Road, Trail Town and Last Chance), and the Westerners series of biographical novels: Gun Justice, The Outlaw Trail and Gunmaster. In November 2016 his newest western, Christmas in the Lone Star State, will be published by St. Martin's Press.

As an historian, Manning has taught at Stephen F. Austin State University, Southern Illinois University, and Montgomery College in Texas. His website The Eighties Club is widely regarded as an excellent resource on the history and pop culture of the 1980s. He has been active in wildlife conservation with a particular interest in wolf recovery. And, most importantly, he is the father of three remarkable children -- Nick, Connor and Grace.

A JM Frontier Action Adventure (F)

JM has penned a frontier action western about a mountain man who was recruited by the President to contain the anti establishment leanings of Aaron Burr. Aaron Burr was attempting to subjugate the new states of North America. Flintlock was recruited and given as much information that the Presidents office had on Burr and his contacts to check him before he and his followers wrecked in the new world. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS

Historical story

Very enjoyable read. The historical value has me looking into facts and places of reference. Worth the time and a great way to end the work day.

Good summer fun!

Flintlock is the frontier nickname of Nathaniel Jones, a deadeye shot on the Kentucky frontier. The book is ostensibly about Aaron Burr and his attempt to break the American West away from the rest of the United States in the early 1800s. For those of you not familiar with Burr, he was the former Vice President (Jefferson's first term) who killed America's first Secretary of the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton (he's on your $10 bill) in a duel. This ruined his political career and he was accused of conspiring to turn the US territory East of the Mississippi and west of the Appalachians into a personal dictatorship.

The book has a rather large prologue (almost 1/2 of the book) that concerns young Flintlock's exploits as a teen in the Revolutionary War on the Virginia/Kentucky frontier. To be honest, that is the only complaint that I have with the book - its back cover does not accurately describe its contents. It's a fun summertime book, a quick read with lots of action and lots of historical background thrown in. Is it a great work of fiction, able to stand with Melville and Hemingway? No, but it is a fun little book that does all that it was ever intended to do - entertain a lot and educate a little.

4/5: Great well rounded historical fiction, with some western characteristics. About a lieutenant that is trying to hunt down Aaron Burr for treason to the Union as trying to establish an independent country. It was a fun one with assassinations and romance in a detailed 1800s vibe of the Midwest, with Native American tomahawk attacks included. Great character and memorable world building in the story.
