I loved this book, the second I started reading it. I really enjoyed how Jordan didn't give up and she kept pushing until received what she wanted. The plot was amazing and it struck me as though it were going on a roller coaster. I definitely rate this 5 stars.

Best book ever

It's been awhile since I've really been captured by a book but this book did the trick it adds just the right amount of humor suspense and even pain that it takes to make a great book I also loved the second book heart of shadow that I would like to thank the writer for giving out free.

Awesome and heart pounding!

The rocky road that Jordan goes down is tricky and dangerous. Everyone wants to either have or kill her. This book makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up and their is plenty of power to last you a life time.

I loved this book right from the start, even though the "perspective" shifted from this time to that time a lot in the beginning (which made it a bit hard to follow everything that happened; but it made for a fantastic feeling of suspense...). I thought this book was great, fresh and a whole of a lot more positive things.

It was so easy rating this book since I think it's amazing.

I loved the plot to death, the beginning mysterious, the middle excellent (the best part of the whole book in my opinion), the crescendo good (but could have been a lot, a lot better) and the finish was intriguing.

I loved the characters, how they were portrayed and how they were introduced throughout the book.

The environment/world-building didn't distract you from the plot, but complemented it; which is exactly how I like it!

I didn't have any problems reading this book since the language was used well and I didn't find any (distracting) faults with the "set-up".

The themes, as well as the world-building only complemented the whole plot/base and it worked together beautifully.

I would without any doubt recommend reading this book. It's fresh, alluring, lovely and full of suspense.

Now, I'm going to see what I can do to find and then buy the next book; because it's all I can think of!

This book is an emotional roller coaster in which I found myself staying up into the wee hours of the night to finish. That being said, the first book was really hard for me to get into. I found myself a quarter into the book confused (which makes sense since Jordan, the main character is confused) and trying to decide if I really wanted to finish it. Thankfully, I decided to continue due to the awesome writing style and main character. Jordan is a really complex yet amazingly bad ass heroine. She has a terrible life, from being abandoned by her mom, to foster care, to being tortured for years before finally escaping and meeting her dad. Normally that would be an entire book, but that is only the beginning of the novel. The world is very creative and well thought out. The descriptions are amazing and, by the time I got past the confusing beginning, this book quickly became one of my favorite books. It's mostly quick paced and once the action starts it doesn't really let up. I am not a huge romance fan, but the romance in this novel is well done and not excessive. Jordan does not spend time wallowing in her relationships and actually acts realistic in stressful situations. I'm super excited for the third installment and would recommend.

I found this ebook for free on Amazon. With that in mind, this book could have been a good one or a bad one; there never seems to be an in-between with free Amazon books.

Needless to say, this was such an interesting story. I read this on my tablet and kept glancing down to the percentage to see how much more was left because I didn't want it to end. Sadly, I was so caught up in the story that when I went to turn the page, it was last. :( Yes, I'm interested in reading more in this series.

There were some mistakes/errors throughout the story (adding in a word, leaving a word out, or using the wrong word) but nothing that distracted me much. For example: "Jordan's didn't hear anything."

Questions/Comments:

I had a hard time trying to imagine what the wild rooms looked like (Tolly house, Jordan's room with the "mid-sized pond with a fountain of water in the middle," or the hotel room they stay at in Wintura with the island in the middle of the room). It's like the author used too much of her imagination and my imagination was simply left in the dust. lol

Why were grocery carts referred to as wagons in Walmart? The guy that grabs Jordan in the Walmart thinks she's his girlfriend. How? She's wearing a camo jacket with her hood up along with a hat.

When Jordan first meets her father, she doesn't know he's her father. Neither Mr. Penn nor Mr. Parker makes that declaration to her. Yet, there was a part when Jordan "...stared into her father's eyes and felt his will pressing in around her," just a little while later. But she doesn't know he's her father! Yet, for whatever reason, the author seemed to skip over that fact and made it appear as though Jordan already knew who he was; it was just left out of the story.

Jordan demonstrates how tiny the pill was that the Haven had been giving her. Strangely, the author informs us that it was "...smaller than a dime..." which seemed kind of obvious given most pills are smaller than a dime.

How did no one, besides other sorcerors, realize that William had lost his marbles when he killed the Walmart people?

Kelly heals ALL of Jordan's injuries. Jordan then attempts to eat some waffles, except she starts to fall asleep at the table. She's told to go rest. Kelly then ends up going to her room to show her the clothes and accessories she got for her and tells Jordan to go try them on. So no sleep?! Later on, there's a part when Jordan is feeling the bumps/ridges of the scars on her neck. Huh? Kelly healed those though.

There was supposedly no sign of her power after Mr. Parker severs the soul-tie, so why does Jordan still feel pain in her chest randomly?

Heath made the Parker house. His glass is "indestructible." So...how did Jordan manage to break the glass doors of the house, and why did no one comment how powerful she was since she manages to do this?

I didn't understand why no one seemed to care about Jordan and her powers when she first arrived at the Parker house, besides Health who made the amulet for her. Jordan's so emotional when it came to her powers and her struggle to control them, yet neither Kelly nor Mr. Parker seems to care about her struggle.

Only women can be grounders because they have the power of all four elements, and only men can be sorcerers. The women/grounders are used to help the sorcerers so they don't "Fall." I'm starting to wonder (haven't read book 2 yet), if Jordan will end up being the first female sorcerer and not be a grounder.

When Jordan is in Tolly House waiting for Cibrian to come back, the Master of the Haven shows up. There's a part when he looks "...beyond her (Jordan) to Tolly House." How can he look to the house when he's in it?

Having all four elemental powers supposedly makes the person stronger than everyone else, as Jordan states, "It makes them invincible," so how did William die? Unless I missed that part, I have no clue what happened to him besides when Jordan says that she could still feel his blood on her when she thinks back to the Walmart incident.

If Jordan's power has been gone for around two weeks while at the Parker House, how did she wake the Valor/Knight?

Can I say that I was annoyed with how many times Jordan stated that maybe she wasn't Donovan's daughter? Get over it, girl!

While in the Tolly House, Jordan, Levi, and Cibrian are on a landing with two sets of stairs on either side of them. First, there's his cousin who comes down the stairs talking to Cibrian without looking "up" to realize that he's not alone. Then there was his mother walking from the other side, who also didn't look "up". How did they not realize there were other people? They're walking DOWN the stairs! They should have been able to see them using the top of their vision (if that makes sense).

How did Jordan get Levi out of the Haven?

Donovan ends up getting the kids up at 3 am because "Every morning you'll wake with a new store of energy." Couldn't they have just waited till they actually woke up themselves? That part just seemed strange to me. Either way, right after they attempt to relinquish their excess power (it seems like just a few minutes have gone by), it's suddenly breakfast time.

The big boxes/carriages. Kelly has already gone inside of them. Her sisters later arrive, chat for a while, and then Kelly comes running outside to hug them. If she missed them that much, why hadn't she waited outside with everyone else? Is Kelly stupid/naive when it comes to Ruth and her constant flirting with Donovan? Strangely, I hadn't even realized that Heath was with the group until he's mentioned once they're in Wintura. Additionally, the inside is described as having velvet seating going around all four walls; so where's the front of the carriage?

I'm not sure where in the story it was, but I swear there was a part where it wasn't always possible, if at all, for a sorcerer to "sense" a Grounder. Yet, at the end of the story, the one sorcerer in the long, green coat tells her the opposite.

Wow Oh Wow!
This story can only be described as brilliant,a masterpiece.
My mind was racing from the moment I read the first page, this story goes full action from start to the end. I immediately fell in love with the characters and there stories. So much brilliance went into this story if I could crawl into this authors mind it would be an honor.
It's exciting fun emotional,oh emotional it's rare when an author can make you feel a characters pain and heartache to the core and laugh,I laughed my ass off!
I truly believe this should be a movie it has so much potential and have not read anything so good that just made me devour this book and ignore my family until it was read.
I'm so keen for the next installment to see what happens, bring on more magic, fantasy and action of the best kind ~

Poor writing style put me off

I gave up a few pages in because the writing style annoyed me so much. I don't know how the other reviewers say they were drawn in to the story as the paragraphs are broken into so many short sentences, that there is no flow at all. The story reads more like a narrative for a computer game than a novel.

Each paragraph consists of several short sentences that comprise of around 5 to 10 words each. As such the book reads; Catherine was removed from her cell. She passed several
other teens. One was a boy who grinned. Another was a girl who leant upon her guard. Etc.

This may be a good book but without any flow, it just doesn't work for me.

This book needs so much - editing and grammar checks as well as fleshing out the back story a TON more. The characters are interesting, but the main character accepts there is a magical world too easily, and that is never explained. This book seems like it should be a book #2 in the series because there are too many holes in the plot to ignore. I kept contemplating not reading the rest of the book. The only saving grace is the likable characters. I will NOT, however, waste my time with any more in this series, or any other books from this author.

Not bad and not flawless enough, a bit of structure would have been useful, like more of her past to build up a better storyline. I couldn't connect to the main character, Jordon. I couldn't understand the relationship between her and Levi, no information how they both escaped Haven. I can understand Jordan in some way that she suffered in the time she grown up, that nobody cared enough for her. I also can understand her mistrust, when she meets her father for the first time. I quite like Donovan, sure he showed not much emotion to Jordan, but I guess he has a secret and a reason for his actions. He tried to show her kindness, to keep her save, even his wife Kelly showed kindness, to make her comfortable. Cibrian is a lovely character, quite cheeky. I liked the idea of the book and the title of it. But somehow I get the feeling that Jordan don't want to be saved, not mature enough for her reaction. There are not really good conversations between the characters, to short sentence for my part. I didn't liked the end at all, she saw what the gem showed her and she still headed for the woods with her guardian, not even tried to connect with Levi in some way, well when her father is that powerful he should have found her when chaos found a way. No insight what happened to her father and Cibrian, Levi, Gideon, there where all with her. I found it quite strange that no one crossed her path.
Next thing the books did not lack on detailed description, they were good. I don't know how the second part will be, and found the price a bit expensive. Because of the structure of part one I am not sure if I get the second one. Sorry for the not so good review.

I decided to not finish this book, mostly because I couldn’t get into it. I tried extremely hard and I think that is part of the problem. I grew up in abusive situations (more than one) and reading and feeling what she is going through is.. rough. The fear and the flashbacks and the all night paseing is described perfectly. The not trusting anyone but a very select few I still fight with. This author is good. Extremely good. But in this case, too good because reading this work is freaking me out so that can’t stay focused on the story. I am sorry and I have no doubt at all that it is worth the read.

The plot moves very quickly and so much happens in a short amount of time. It felt rushed, but in a way the rushing almost felt right, because that’s how it would feel to the main character. One of the main male characters felt very inconsistent, like he was there to steer the plot instead of actually having consistent thoughts and opinions. Overall I enjoyed it, but am not sure I’ll read the next one.

Wow.... This book was an amazing read, I simply could not put it down even for a second. It has everything a reader could possibly ask for in a good book like great storytelling, loveable chraracters and greatest of all, magic. I'm a sucker for all things magic related. The world Jensen creates in this book is very creatively imaginative. Can't wait to continue the series. Five stars🌟 indeed.
