While the villains are away, the heroes will play! Sonic and his pals go off on their own adventures, even as all roads lead them back to one another.
With Dr. Eggman and Surge subdued for now, Sonic and friends have a chance to relax, reset, and plan for the future. Or so they hope. If anything can be counted on around Sonic, it’s that new misadventures are just waiting to happen!
To start, Amy visits Knuckles on Angel Island to return a relic. The island, as always, has a few surprises in store for them as they catch up. Meanwhile, Mimic is putting together the purrfect disguise to infiltrate the Restoration, and Silver is left to his own devices at Restoration HQ. Sonic himself has joined Blaze on a trip around the world where they will see all the sights to be seen!
Cannot express how much I appreciate any story with a focus on Silver. He’s such an underutilized character these days with his only prominent appearance being in the game he originated in, Sonic the Hedgehog (2006).
Silver’s whole character across the IDW run has been something to behold. He finally saves that desolate future he came from, but as a result he’s left feeling like he has no purpose, no real reason to stick around in Sonic’s time. I like these more mature, introspective moments, and seeing him trying to figure out his place in the world really hits me on a deeper level. Once we’ve achieved what we thought to be our life goal, what next?
While Silver was not the only focus of this trade paperback’s, his moments were some of my favorites. It was also really nice to see a greater focus on Blaze and Knuckles who have been rather absent after the Metal Virus arc so early on into the comic’s run. I think Blaze’s in particular were really fun as we got to see more development on her discussions with Knuckles in the 2022 annual, as well as some great depictions of the different continents from Sonic Unleashed (Spagonia especially!!).
This was a great read and I am really looking forward to the next few issues as well as the upcoming Sonic Riders inspired story arc!
I thought this book had a perfect balance of showing the different characters different stories equally. I also felt Vanilla and Cream cooking together was really really cute. We definitely need more of that. I feel like the guy who silver and whisper thought was the mimic was actually a pretty good villain in a good place for one to break in. When knuckles and Amy are searching for a place for the relics is a actually one of the best parts. It shows the cuteness and perfection of the sonic IDW comics storyline.

I love these more small-scale stories. And does Blaze have feelings for Sonic? It may have just been a detail that the artist included, but I think it's kind of interesting considering how the mainline canon almost never explores it outside of Amy's love for Sonic and Knuckles and Rouge's flirting. I especially loved the colours used in the art in this volume.
Not as much action here as previous volumes since it's mostly introducing the new plots and characters at play in this arc, but we do get good scenes and interactions between characters!
We get Knux and Amy shenanigans, Blaze and Sonic bonding time (i enjoy this so much since they're like counterparts to each other in a way btw SPAGONIA MENTION hi Unleashed!), Silver and the newly established Diamond Cutters, Mimic/Duo and Clutch begin their infiltration into the restoration, Silver and Blaze duo bonding moment (which I LOVED; also SOLEANNA MENTION!!!), team Chaotix and Babylon Rogues action ensues, Cream and Gemerl, and best mama Vanilla who will ensure that dinner is not Ruined.
Enjoyable read overall and loved all the Silver content we got here. I love him so much and he deserves more time in the spotlight! Such a great but underutilized character who definitely needs further exploration and development! So far, he AND Blaze have been done justice in these IDW comics.
Looking forward to reading next volume and finding out whatever evil Clutch and Duo/Mimic are planning for our heroes...
As always, something I love about the IDW franchise is that while it adds new characters, it never forgets the old ones. Here, Amy and Knuckles get an adventure on Angel Island. That’s new! Amy and Knuckles don’t interact much one-on-one, and I loved them just exploring the island together.
And…
“I trust you [Amy] and about five others, max” – Knuckles
Look at that growth! Knuckles has friends that he trusts!
Please keep the Sonic comics (and franchise, really) in the hands of the IDW writers. They know how to make Sonic goofy without being obnoxious, and how to tease cute moments without dipping into shipping wars.
One-star deduction for the miscommunication trope. It is no fun to read a character be gaslit though I’m happy Whisper knew what was up. Realistically, it makes sense why no one believed him, but it’s so unsatisfying from a reader’s perspective.
Sonic's ongoing adventures go on hiatus for a bit after this volume, and I can kinda tell why. With Surge and Eggman out of the way, there's not much going on. These stories are fun, don't get me wrong, but they lack any real momentum in terms of plot, which is amusing when you think of Sonic's main passtime.
I always enjoy Cream kicking the crap out of people, I will admit, and Mimic's infiltration of the Resistance was a fun plot, but yeah, I think Sonic's spinning his wheels. Maybe a break will be good for he and his pals, so they can come back all the stronger.
I am not usually a fan of the volumes where Sonic is largely absent, but I enjoyed this quite a bit. At first it seemed like a lot of filler content, but by the end it was clear there was a villainous plot afoot. Looking forward to how it turns out in the next volume.
I wanted to like this book but I was really confused by who some of the characters were and there were a lot of subplots. I liked Knuckles’ subplot with the Chaotix though. And Sonic was mostly absent for this one.
