A Fairy Garden Mystery #5

A Twinkle of Trouble

Rate this book
Carmel-by-the-Sea garden shop owner Courtney Kelly sees things others can’t—like fairies, and hidden motives for murder . . .

Courtney is delighted when her tiny friend Fiona returns from the fairy realm, appearing at the base of a Cypress tree. When her Ragdoll cat, Pixie, emerges from her own portal—aka the cat door—the three set off for a busy day. Busier than usual, since Courtney has rented a small plot of land at the Flower Farm, where she hopes to grow her own supplies for her fairy-garden business. Plus, the annual Summer Blooms Festival is coming up, and Courtney has booked a booth . . .

But the murder of Courtney’s friend, Genevieve, casts a pall over the festival. Ever since Genevieve sold her floral business, she’d been building a career as an influencer. She was perennially opinionated—but in her new role she’d become surprisingly vicious, dissing local entrepreneurs with nasty posts and unwarranted bad reviews. That’s landed a couple of Courtney’s other friends on the suspect list—including Flower Farm owner Daphne Flores. And when a second victim is discovered, seeds of doubt about Daphne’s innocence sprout in Courtney’s mind. With only a germ of a clue, Courtney will have to overturn every rock to get the dirt on the real killer . . .

Enjoyed the mystery and meeting Fiona's sister. Looking forward to meeting the Fairy Queen soon, hopefully. A good series; not a frequent fan of fairies as I don't know enough about the subject, but the Carmel setting is gorgeous. Looking forward to the next release in the author's other series soon.

This is book 5 in the Fairy Garden Mystery series. I have read all of these books and it’s a seres I definitely enjoy. The characters are great and they were all back for this one, including Fiona who had taken a month to spend in the fairy realm. I did think this story moved a little slower than previous stories, but it was still a fun mystery. Courtney is delighted the town is having a festival so she can drum up some new business for her fairy garden store, but when a friend of hers is found dead close by the festival loses some of it’s excitement for her. She’s glad to have Fiona back, and Fiona is mentoring her sister. Courtney tries to resist investigating, but she can’t help it. When a second woman is murdered she starts to worry that part of the connection between them is being friends with her. I liked the resolution to this one and found it to be a good mystery. It wasn’t the most twisty, but it was well written with some good red herrings.

I love this series. I’ve read them all. I think this is the fifth one but this one just didn’t sit right with me. It was too confusing.

A Twinkle of Trouble is the 5th book in the Fairy Garden Mystery series. I have read this series from the beginning. It takes place in Carmel by the Sea, CA. The main character is Courtney Kelly who owns Open Your Imagination, a fairy garden shop. Her assistant is Joss Tumberlake. Fiona is a fairy that lives with her. Brady Cash is her boyfriend who owns The Hideaway Cafe. There are an interesting characters that add to the story. They are: Hattie Hopewell, President of the Happy Diggers Garden Club,, Oliver Killian owner of Garden Delights, Genevieve Bellerose who was part owner of Garden Delights and is now an inflluencer, Yolanda Acebo (Yoly) who works part-time for Courtney as well as for her sister Yuanna Acebo who owns Sweet Treats, Petunia who owns a flower shop. etc.

Fiona has been gone a month visiting her mother who is the Queen of the the fairies. Fiona is a righteous fairy. Her sister, Eveleen is coming for a visit, She is a nuturer fairy. There are many fairies who live in the town and are living with the townspeople who believe in them and can see them.

Courtney has taken a booth at the Summer Blooms Festival of which Oliver is incharge. There is a scream at the festival which everyone runs to see. They find Daphane standing over Gwenevine's dead body. Detective Dylan Summers and Officer Redcliff arrive. Petunia at a later time is also killed.

This is where the story takes off with so much going on that it is hard to put all down on paper. I will let the reader enjoy the journey of finding out who the killer is to the exciting and unexpected end.

I did find that the story was a little long in it's telling.

Thank you NetGalley and Kensington Publishing Corp. for this ARC.

Courtney is back in action and this time she needs to investigate quickly as the bodies are starting to pile up and is making one of her friends look super guilty. Enjoy a bit of whimsey with your murder mystery as the fairies are in full flying form and woven throughout sometimes helpfully and sometimes distracting Courtney! This series is always a must read for me, but this book definitely cements that fact home! The murder mystery is artfully woven while the interpersonal relationships between the characters remain compelling and intriguing to draw you even further into their lives. I absolutely can't wait to come back and visit Carmel again so we can see what Courtney is up to with her friends and especially Brady, but also to see what antics the fairies get up to next!

“ A Twinkle of Trouble ” by Daryl Wood Gerber the 5th instalment in “A Fairy Garden Mystery" series. I think this was my favourite so far, I love catching up with Courtney, Fiona her righteous fairy, Joss and Meagan and Pixie. I also enjoyed meeting Fiona’s sister Eveleen, and Ulra the cafe fairy. Plus I love all the recipes at the back of the book! I’m definitely trying the apple streusel muffins.! Carmel-by-the-Sea garden shop owner Courtney Kelly sees things others can’t—like fairies, and hidden motives for murder . . .

I found the story to be very entertaining as well as full of twists to keep you guessing till the very end. I am glad that things turned out the way they did but oh what a ride for poor Daphne and Scarlet.

I’m anxiously awaiting for the next instalment as I want to know what happens next …

I highly recommend this series to all my cozy loving friends.

I requested and received an Advance Reader Copy of this book from Kensington Books and NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my OWN.

Courtney Kelly has a wonderful life. She lives in Carmel-by-the-Sea, runs a Fairy Garden business called Open Your Imagination, and has her very own fairy companion called Fiona. If she could just keep herself away from murder investigations and the wrath of the local detectives, life would be perfect!

Taking part in the local Summer Blooms Festival helps Courtney promote her business and garden making classes, but when a body is found, it casts a pall over everything. Worse still, Courtney knew the victim and was already putting her investigative skills into practice when a second body is discovered. With Fiona mentoring her younger sister, the two fairies are on hand to help keep an eye on everyone, but will they be able to work through everything together before the killer can set their sights on Courtney herself?

Book five in this lovely series doesn't disappoint with a great mystery to solve, a double dose of fairy magic, and a little romance as well! There are also some lovely sounding recipes included, all of which sound yummy and not too difficult to make. I read a lot of cosy crime, but of all of the main protagonists, I would like to be Courtney, pretty please.

I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, Kensington Books, but the opinions expressed are my own. This is a brilliant series that I thoroughly enjoy and happily recommend.

Courtney owns a fairy garden shop in Carmel, California. She can see fairies. Her fairy friend has returned from the fairy realm. Courtney has rented a plot of land at the Flower Farm and booked a booth in Summer Blooms festival. When a dead body of a new friend is found. Courtney decides to investigate.

I liked following the clues with Courtney and Fiona. I'm not a big fan of the descriptions of building fairy gardens, I tend to skim those parts. I enjoy the storyline regarding the fairies. I like this fantasy cozy mystery series.

#ATwinkleofTrouble #NetGalley. I really enjoyed this latest addition to this series.
Courtney has been missing her fairy her Fiona, so when she returns, Courtney couldn't be happier.
Fiona comes with news, that she will be mentoring her sister, Evelene, in the ways of the human world.
Courtney has her hands full, and when a friends death shakes up the small town, she can't resist the urge to investigate.
This story was well done and it kept me guessing until the end.
It's always a pleasure to get to catch up with all the wonderful characters in this series.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for selecting me to read an advanced copy of the book.

Courtney has rented a small plot of land in hopes to grow plants for her shop. Courtney is also preparing for the upcoming annual Summer Blooms Festival where she has rented a booth. When one of Courtney’s friends are murdered and another one is a suspect, Courtney and her fairy friends set out to solve the murder.

This is such a fun series. Most of characters are likable and have great chemistry. I enjoy the scenes with the fairies, they make the story have a whimsical feeling even though we are solving a murder. The story is pulls you in from the start and moves at a smooth steady pace. There are plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader engaged throughout until the big reveal.

All thoughts and opinions are my own, I have not been influenced by anyone.

This was an absolute delight to read, as are all of the other Fairy Garden Mysteries! I was invested in solving the mystery alongside Courtney and her fairy companion, Fiona. I was able to figure out who the culprit was before it was revealed. I really hope there will be another book in this series!

A Twinkle of Trouble, fifth in the author's delightful Fairy Garden Mystery series, has all of the elements that I love about these charming books. Courtney, owner of the Open Your Imagination fairy garden shop, specializes in teaching her customers how to make their own fairy gardens. I can't get enough of the descriptions of the figures of fairies, humans, and animals that she sells, along with tiny buildings, water features, and other objects that make the fairy garden--and the client's chosen plants--come alive.

You don't have to believe in fairies to enjoy this series, although one of the plots involves Fiona, a "righteous fairy' who may eventually be the next fairy queen, and who lives with Courtney. Fiona has spent a month in the fairy realm but has returned with her sister to teach her some lessons the current queen has commanded. Most people can't see fairies, of course, but a few of Courtney's human friends have "opened their heart" enough to view them.

There is a mystery to be solved as well, and this time, one of Courtney's friends has been murdered after taking her influencer job too seriously, stooping to criticize (in print) and anger even her friends and their businesses. More mayhem ensues, as Courtney tries to help identify the culprit and motive.

But I was most interested in the details of beautiful Carmel-by-the-Sea, the local Summer Blooms Festival, the lives of Courtney and her fellow entrepreneurs, her delightful cat, and a healthy portion of magical realism.

My review is based on a complimentary pre-release copy of this book.

3.75 this one was fun! We got a new fairy in town and I just love the magical aspect. However our sleuth was just a little too suspicious! Also, I feel like if people stoped trying to kill her at the end of books, she wouldn’t solve the crime. Hint to the next killer in this series. ^.^

Courtney and Fiona are back at it in this fifth installment of A Fairy Garden Mystery series’ while each book could be read as a standalone, I recommend reading each book in order as a series for continuity.
During the Summer Blooms Festival, someone begins making negative social media posts about the local business owners, when that person is later found dead, Courtney steps in to investigate.
A Twinkle of Trouble draws you in from the very first page and keeps you engaged and entertained until you close the back cover. The murders are well plotted, there are plot twists and red herrings that add to the excitement, be for the ultimate reveal of whodunnit. The fairies are an absolute delight, and add the perfect touch of whimsy, I loved the sections with Fiona and her sister!
I always enjoy my time in Carmel by the Sea , I’m already looking forward to my next visit!

If you love fairies and fairy gardens, or just a really good cozy, I highly recommend this book!

I voluntarily read an advance copy of this book all opinions are my own.

This is another fun, magical book in this lovely series. Whether you’ve read the previous books in this series or this if your first one to read, you will enjoy the characters and community of Carmel-by-the-Sea. Courtney gets some extra help with solving this mystery with the arrival of her fairy, Fiona’s, sister. Fiona is tasked with mentoring her sister, just as Fiona was mentored when she joined the human world.

Throughout the story, there are clues to the real killer and many actions the supporting characters take that make you doubt their innocence. The joy of friends seeing fairies for the first time, deepening love between key characters, and a few new members of the community make this a great cozy mystery. Such an enchanting series!

Thank you to the author for proving me an advanced readers copy in exchange for an honest review.

I love this series!
Labeled as a cozy mystery, but is it really? There’s a little bit of extra charm in this series with the fairies flying about. Just enough fantasy to add some sparkle to the daily happenings.

Fiona is home and her friends couldn’t be happier! Her sister is joining her for some human world training. And yes, even more fairy gardens are built! I enjoy the descriptions of each one.

Love the setting and all the small town feels. There is always someplace new to explore in this town and just a wonderful place I would like to visit. Visit, but not live. Too many murders! Another murder has occured and the suspect list is building. But wait! Could there be a 2nd murder making it harder to narrow down this list? Despite the blood shed, the friendships and romance keep this story going. I enjoy the bit of romance between Courtney and Brady and his support of her, even though he can’t see fairies - yet! There are a lot of characters to keep straight. Just enought to make me focus a bit more. The murder myster itself is interesting and the lovely combo of characters and story have me rating this story 4 solid stars.

Thank you NetGalley and #Kensington for the eArc of A Twinkle of Trouble. I recommend everyone give their imaginations a little extra fairy magic and read this series.

"A Twinkle of Trouble (A Fairy Garden Mystery)" by Daryl Wood Gerber is a literal fairy garden cozy mystery. There are fairies in the sense of tiny little fairies that only some people can see that come in and out of our world through fairy portals. Of course, the main character (Courtney) can see fairies and runs a fairy garden store. This is the 5th book and there are some previous book things that get brought up that would be better if you've read the previous books. However, it's not a deal breaker for reading this book.

The mystery in this book felt partly resolved. It made sense as to who the culprit was. I kind of thought it might go the direction it did. Thought, there were enough other suspects to throw you off a little too.

“A Twinkle of Trouble,” book 5 in the Fairy Garden Mystery series, returns the reader to Carmel-by-the-Sea and Open Your Imagination, a fairy garden business and tea shop run by Courtney Kelly. In addition to selling everything you need to make a fairy garden, Courtney offers classes helping people make their own fairy gardens, she hosts book clubs, children’s events, and tea parties, among others. The shop and Courtney’s geographic surroundings are so vividly and wonderfully described that you want to place it on your ‘to visit’ list, and then you realize it isn’t a real shop!

Courtney, her friends, and family, are all people you want to hang out with. From her best friend Meaghan, to boyfriend Brady, to the Hopewell sisters and other members of the Happy Diggers Club, and the many other well-developed characters in the book, you find yourself becoming increasingly involved in their lives and drawn so much into the book that you forget there is a murder to solve!

Adding to the charm of Courtney’s ‘human’ friends are the fairies – Fiona, Callie, Cedric, Eveleen, and Meriweather Rose of Song. These are such wonderful characters that they add another dimension to the story. By the end of each of the books I find myself wishing I too had a fairy in my life as Courtney does!

“A Twinkle of Trouble” finds Courtney over-extended as usual. In addition to running her business, she is participating in the Summer Blooms Festival by staffing a booth and trying to cut costs by farming her own plants for the fairy gardens, having rented an acre of land at a local farm. In the midst of ‘normal life’, Courtney is trying to solve the murder of a friend who has recently begun making negative social media posts about local business owners, and unfortunately, the suspect list includes some of Courtney’s other friends. There are many twists and turns in the solving of this murder and when another of Courtney’s friends is found murdered, Courtney, the police and the reader are even more puzzled, as it seems that every person on the suspect list has an alibi. Courtney, with a little help from Fiona, is finally able to put all the pieces together and the murderer is identified, but not before Courtney finds herself in personal danger.

“A Twinkle of Trouble” draws you in from page one with the return of Fiona from the fairy world to the last page. It engages you, causes you to question and think, it sends you down a few rabbit holes trying to solve the murder, it makes you laugh, it teaches you and it makes you smile. This is one of my favorite series as it is so much more than a mystery. There is a wealth of characters, and the author thoughtfully provides a list of humans, fairies, and animals. The reader learns some gardening tidbits and how to make a fairy garden. The author mentions some wonderful food served in her teashop or in her Brady’s Café, and then provides recipes at the end of the book! There are at least sixteen recipes in “A Twinkle of Trouble,” the author having provided gluten-free recipes for those of us who cannot have gluten. I’m never sure if I should place these books on my bookshelf or in my kitchen! Each chapter begins with a ‘fairy-related’ quote, many of which I have taken the time to seek out the original source to read more. Lastly, there are subtle ‘shout outs’ to other cozy authors, for example the book club in “A Twinkle of Trouble” is reading “Mum’s the Word” by Kate Collins – this caused me to chuckle as I too have read this book!

I could go on and on about this book and series and will anxiously await the next installment! I highly encourage anyone who has not yet met Courtney and Fiona to grab this book (or any in the series), a cup of tea or coffee, some snacks and settle in for a wonderful read.

Courtney lives in Carmel-by-the-Sea in California, and owns Open Your Imagination, a shop that allows people to make their own fairy gardens. It helps that she has her own personal fairy, Fiona. Fiona has recently returned from the fairy realm, and Courtney is happy to have her back. Although not everyone can see -- nor believes in -- fairies, Courtney and others don't really care.

While hosting a group that are there to make their own little gardens, one of the women, Genevieve, learns that she is not invited to participate in the Summer Blooms Festival, and it rankles her. She proceeds to insult other guests, and since she is known as an influencer, uses her online forum to diss other local businesses, as well. As imagined, this doesn't sit well with people. Although it is surprising when Genevieve is found dead, and Daphne Flores, one of the women whose business she insulted, is found standing over her.

When another person is found murdered, the police are honing in on Daphne. Courtney has trouble believing her friend is a killer, but to be fair, she's not close with the woman and doesn't know all that much about her. But Courtney is nothing if not persistent, and she continues to ask questions and look for clues that might point her to a killer -- a killer who might already be aware that Courtney could be dangerous if left alive...

This is the fifth book in the series and I must say that I have found them all delightful. While I will not say whether I believe in such things as fairies or not, I will also say that I am positive that some people have no problem believing. Which is why this book is so delightful (yes, I said it again). Just like the title of her shop, it allows you to open your imagination and try to think what it would be like if there were many of them floating around us.

While, of course, the mystery takes first place as it should, we have a secondary tale in which Fiona's sister enters the human world to be mentored by her elder sister and other fairies that reside there. We learn that even in the fairy realm there is sibling rivalry and arguments, but there is also fun and enjoyment. It is a pleasure to share in these moments with the fairies.

But back to the mystery -- Courtney has no issues with asking people where they were on the nights of the murders, even though the police tell her to stay out of the investigation. There are mixed signals, with the lead detective also telling her to keep her ears and eyes open and report anything she learns. Hmm. You can't have it both ways, sir. So Courtney does what she does best, and gathers information any way she can (although she doesn't do anything illegal, which is good). With each piece of data gathered she is eventually able to dismiss people from the suspect list, leaving her with only three of them; and figuring out which one it is could put her life in danger.

While I knew the murderer long before Courtney did (Again, I read a lot of mysteries) I did enjoy watching her figure it out. Alas, it was nearly too late, but Courtney can think on her feet and she had no problem putting things in motion ahead of time. In the end, it all comes together very nicely, and we are given a glimpse of what might be to come. Highly recommended.

I was given an advance copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley but this in no way influenced my review.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy from NetGalley. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

A Twinkle of Trouble by Daryl Wood Gerber has Courtney with double the fairy fun.

Can Courtney and Fiona solve the case?

It’s been a month and a half since Fiona disappeared into the fairy realm, and Courtney missed her fairy friend. Surprisingly, within that time frame, Courtney didn’t find any dead bodies until after Fiona returned.

Courtney and Fiona
Courtney has grown since the first book. She still cares deeply whenever they find a dead body and about the people she suspects. Courtney tries her hardest to be open-minded about her friends, but sometimes, it doesn’t work out very well during a murder investigation. She indeed finds this out in this book.

Fiona is getting more recognition from the Queen, and the Queen gives her a task to teach her younger sister some things. She is a good fairy who has truly grown from the first book, as she isn’t all that impish anymore and must have gotten on the Queen’s good side. I will miss Fiona when it is time for her to return to the fairy world for good.

The Mystery
Courtney isn’t the first person to find a dead body this time or the next one, either. Nope, two other people have the honor of being the ones to find the dead bodies. However, Courtney remains on the detective’s bad side by being there when they finally show up. The first victim, Genevieve, wasn’t that nice of a person when she was alive, and Courtney sadly has been finding that out as she’s been investigating.

But wow, that reveal surely had me on the edge of my seat, and I totally didn’t get who it was.

Five Stars
My rating for A Twinkle of Trouble by Daryl Wood Gerber is five stars. I recommend it to anyone who loves a good, cozy culinary paranormal mystery. Ms. Gerber always gets me with the actual culprit of the crime, as I usually fall for one of the red herrings. I also love the recipes she includes in her books.

Don’t forget about the recipes in the back of the book. They are Apple Strudel Muffins + Gluten-free Version, Banana Blueberry Scones + Gluten-free Version, Cacao Nib Brownies + Gluten-free Version, Chocolate Mousse Pie, Gingersnap Brownies, Lemon-Raspberry Delights + Gluten-free Version, Monte Cristo Sandwich, Prosciutto-and-Cheddar Drop Scones + Gluten-free Version, and Raisin-Rosemary Muffins + Gluten-free Version.

Thank you for dropping by! I hope you enjoyed this review of A Twinkle of Trouble by Daryl Wood Gerber.

Until the next time,

Karen Signature

Happy Reading!

Remember when, as a child, we believed anything was possible? A time we had invisible friends and were astounded adults couldn't see them, too? Well, this book will take you back to that time. In this case, Courtney's very real but invisible-to-most friend is Fiona, a righteous fairy. There are four kids of fairies, btw: intuitive, guardian, nurturer, and righteous, like Fiona. I couldn't help but think how cool it'd be to have a tiny friend like Fiona. It's been fun to watch her mature over this series, I might add, to the point where she is mentoring her younger sister Eveleen this go-round. Fiona takes her role seriously, as well she should since she's eventually destined to be the next fairy queen, albeit maybe a tad too seriously. Thanks to the very human Courtney, however, she's able to find her way and help Eveleen learn about the human world. In the process we meet Ulra, a shy fairy who I have a hunch we'll be seeing more of in future books.

But, enough of the fairy world. Courtney has a weekend festival to deal with, fairy gardens to create, lessons to give, and herbs and flowers to try to grow. And, oh, yeah, an unwanted murder to help solve. Who killed social influencer Genevieve? Maybe the key, why? As Courtney investigates, er, talks to people and asks questions, she finds it is far more complicated than who Genevieve recently insulted on her social media. Heck, she even heaved a mild insult at Courtney's boyfriend Brady's cafe. Brady takes it in stride but....did someone else try to shut Genevieve up for good? Was the shrieking seagull really an omen of bad things to come? If you got a threatening note on your door, would you get up and go running alone the next morning? Why is Bentley seen hovering around a victim's home?

Could sweet Daphne, who seems like she wouldn't hurt a fly, have committed a vicious murder? How about Oliver, whose marriage was put on the rocks due to Genevieve? Will Courtney find herself in danger...again? Who...oh, enough teasers. Despite a slow to me start and build, I enjoyed the story, basking in the idea of fairies and fairy kingdoms when not pondering whodunit. You'll even learn a bit about gardening and caring for flowers in the process. It's also fun to imagine the various versions of the fairy gardens created by Courtney at the request of friends and customers. Thanks #NetGalley and #KensingtonBooks - #KensingtonCozies for inviting me through the fairy portal again for a sneak peek. It's wonderful to put on that childish delight and imagine a world full of magic and fairies.

I have been a huge fan of Daryl Wood Gerber's Fairy Garden Mystery series since book one, A Sprinkling of Murder. That was the book that made me realize how much I love a touch of paranormal in my cozies. I'm pleased to say A Twinkle of Trouble is another strong installment in the series.

Courtney Kelly, owner of Open Your Imagination in picturesque Carmel-by-the-Sea, has rented a small plot of land at the Flower Farm in the hopes of growing her own supplies for her fairy garden business. The annual Summer Blooms Festival is coming up, and Courtney has reserved a spot. Unfortunately, not everything is coming up roses when a dead body is found. Courtney, along with her fairy sidekick sleuth, Fiona, sets out to find out who killed her friend. Is another friend of hers the culprit or was it someone else?

The setting alone gives this series a light-hearted, airy feel to it. I really enjoyed spending time in Carmel-by-the-Sea again with Courtney and her friends, humans and fairies as well as Courtney's adorable ragdoll cat, Pixie. One thing I really appreciate in this series is the list of characters at the beginning of the book. One of my biggest challenges when I read a cozy is remembering who all the characters are. This isn't a problem here because, whenever necessary, I can refer to the list that gives a brief explanation of who each character is. It was such a delight to meet up with everyone again. And this time we got to meet Fiona's sister. The banter between these two fairy siblings was quite entertaining. One of my favorite fairies is Cedric Winterbottom. He doesn't play a major role in this book, but every time he speaks I can't help smiling.

There were plenty of suspects with motives and opportunity that kept me guessing. About halfway through the book I did have a hunch who the culprit was, which turned out to be correct. However, there were times when I wavered. I wasn't completely sure until Courtney figured it out.

One of the reasons why I love collecting physical copies of all the books in this series is that each chapter begins with a short poem about fairies. They are such a delight to read. I wouldn't classify this as a culinary cozy, but for fans of recipes, there are several at the end of the book. Courtney's friend's last name is Brownie, so you can count on a brownie recipe to be among them.

If you're looking for a light-hearted cozy, I think you'll be happy with Daryl Wood Gerber's Fairy Garden Mysteries. As with most cozies, each book is a self-contained mystery. However, in order to follow the growth of the characters, I recommend beginning with book one, A Sprinkling of Murder, and working your way through the series.

Book 5, A Twinkle of Trouble, released today. Thank you to Daryl Wood Gerber for providing me with an ARC of this delightful book! All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own.

I was thrilled to have the opportunity to read and review "A Twinkle of Trouble", the fifth book in Daryl Wood Gerber's "Fairy Garden Mystery" series. This has become one of my favorites cozy series, and this book definitely lived up to the high standards set by earlier ones!

Main character Courtney comes across as a genuine, real person. She's smart, hard-working, kind, and loyal; she seems like the kind of person you could meet (and really like) in real life. The fact that she can see and talk to fairies adds a fun element to her character, and to the story. It's a tribute to the author that these magical realism elements fit right in with the narrative, and feel believable within the parameters of the story. By this point in the series, I'm as invested in the happenings in the fairy realm as I am with events in Courtney's world.

The mystery element (in this case, the murder of a friend of Courtney's who had a tendency to bash local businesses on her social media forums) was very well done, with a second (possibly related) murder to accompany it. I enjoy Courtney as an amateur sleuth, because she actually makes an effort to investigate. She is methodical and focused in her approach, and talks openly to the police. (Of course, they typically want her to stay out of investigations, but at least they listen to her when she finds a clue.) Due to the victim's nasty social posts, plenty of people have reason to wish her harm, which gives Courtney plenty of angles of look into. This time, many of the suspects are also her friends, which made things a little tricky!

This book also treats the reader to a bit of progress in Courtney's romance with Brady, as well as some interesting things from the fairly realm. We learn a bit more about how things "work" there, and meet some new fairies. As more and more humans are able to see them, this part of the narrative can take on a larger role. Plus, it's always amusing when Brady and Courtney's father CAN'T see the fairies. (I think Brady is open-minded enough to come around; her father....not any time soon!)

All the normal cozy elements are represented as well. The reader will spend time at work with Courtney in her shop, and as she interacts with her friends and pet. There are plenty of lighter moments to offset the murder investigation, and I enjoyed them very much.

All in all, an EXCELLENT cozy mystery with a bit of magical flair. Five out of five slices of perfect provolone!

Book Review: A Twinkle of Trouble by Daryl Wood Gerber

Rating: 3.5 Stars

I recently dove into A Twinkle of Trouble, the fifth installment in Daryl Wood Gerber’s charming cozy mystery series, and I must say, it was quite the delightful escape. The book features our favorite garden shop owner, Courtney Kelly, who has a unique ability to see things that most of us can’t—like fairies and, of course, the hidden motives behind a murder.

The story kicks off with the return of Courtney’s little fairy friend, Fiona, who makes a whimsical appearance at the base of a Cypress tree. Along with her Ragdoll cat, Pixie, they’re set for a busy day filled with exciting plans. Courtney has rented a plot at the Flower Farm to grow her supplies for her fairy-garden business as she gears up for the upcoming Summer Blooms Festival. However, the excitement quickly dims when her friend Genevieve is found murdered. Genevieve had recently transitioned from owning a floral business to becoming an influencer, but her new role came with a nasty edge—she had been known for her harsh and sometimes unwarranted reviews that put her at odds with local entrepreneurs. With suspicions swirling around other friends, including the Flower Farm owner Daphne Flores, Courtney finds herself digging deep for clues, especially when a second murder occurs.

First off, can we talk about the adorable cover? It’s just perfect for a cozy mystery! I’ve never encountered fairies in a cozy mystery before, which added a delightful twist to the genre. This book really doesn’t disappoint; it offers an engaging mystery to unravel, (I appreciated how Gerber layered the clues and red herrings seamlessly), a sprinkle of fairy magic, and even a touch of budding romance. What’s more impressive is that it holds its own as a standalone. So if you're new to the series, you can easily jump right in without feeling lost. Plus, there are some lovely recipes at the end of the book. Honestly, they all sound delicious, which is always a bonus!

Overall, I’d give A Twinkle of Trouble a solid 3.5 stars. It’s an enjoyable read that combines whimsy with intrigue and is perfect for those cozying up on a rainy day. If you’re looking for a lighthearted mystery that offers a bit of magic along with its suspense, this one’s definitely worth picking up!

A TWINKLE OF TROUBLE is the fifth book in the Fairy Garden Mysteries by Daryl Wood Gerber. This charming book starts each chapter off with a literary quote about fairies that evokes delightful childhood stories and imaginary friends. The author brings the world of fairies to life through her vivid descriptions, and you can’t help but want to meet them yourself. Instead, be content to see them through the eyes of the protagonist, Courtney Kelly, owner of Open Your Imagination fairy garden shop. Another aspect you can count on in Ms. Gerber’s books is the kindness of the core characters…be they human or fairy. They are people you’d like to actually know and become friends with, along with visiting their shops at Carmel-by-the-Sea. The story is a mixture of mystery and magic, both bringing enchanting entertainment to the pages. The author does an admirable job combining the two, to create a tale that captured both my imagination while trying to solve a puzzling whodunit.

As the time approaches for the annual Summer Blooms Festival, tempers flair when local influencer, Genevieve, begin posting negative reviews about local businesses. Angry over not being allowed to participate with a booth at the festival, the influencer seems intent on ruining those who are. There’s a slow build to get to the murder, so it’s not much of a surprise when Genevieve’s body is discovered. Courtney, her friends, and her fairies are soon pulled into investigating when it seems several of her friends are under suspicion. Courtney is quite bold in her questioning, maybe even a bit forceful. But she uncovers clues and… another body. With the second of her friends to be murdered, Courtney worries it’s only a matter of time before she becomes a target. There are clues aplenty and suspects galore, as so many people were targeted by the angry influencer. Once the murder(s) happens, the pace picks up until the edge-of-your-seat reveal. If you enjoy whimsical fairies with your mysteries, then I highly recommend this series!

There are a multitude of delicious treats shared amongst the friends throughout the book. Be prepared to be hungry, or better yet, make one of the many recipes included at the back of the book before sitting down with a cup of tea to read while you nibble.

I was provided with an advance copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This is the 5th installment in the Fairy Garden Mystery series. Courtney Kelly runs Open Your Imagination, a fairy/garden shop in Carmel by the Sea California. Courtney is thrilled to see the return of fairy Fiona return from a month long absence (to the fairy realm) and excited to meet Fiona’s sister Eveleen who she will be mentoring. Courtney is overextended as she has signed up for the Summer Blooms Festival as well has renting plot of land from her friend Natalie to help grow some of the items she sells in her shop. When a new group of friends arrives for tea at the shop there is lots of tension. Genevieve is shocked to hear she was not invited to be part of the festival as she is a social media influencer and was once part owner of Garden Delights with Oliver who is running the festival. Genevieve gets snarky with Scarlett another influencer and implies she is going to do her best to ruin the festival this year. The other ladies Petunia and Natalie think she must be kidding. As the festival starts, Genevieve is found dead just outside the festival grounds and it looks like she has been killed by a gardening tool. Courtney is trying not to get involved but she just can’t help herself as she stumbles upon information and Detective Summers wants her insights but then gets annoyed when she is involved. Natalie is an immediate suspect as she was seen arguing with Genevieve the day she died but then again so it Scarlett as Genevieve just wrote some unflattering posts about her. When Petunia, Natalie’s neighbor is murdered with one of her garden tools then Courtney thinks she is being framed. Natalie has no reason to kill either of the women but then again neither does anyone else. This was an engaging and quick read and although I had my thoughts on who could be the killer I was not sure until the very end when Courtney pulls it all together. I really enjoy this series and I like the characters. Meaghan is right by Courtney as they check things out as are Fiona and Eveleen, Brady and Joss. It was nice to see the introduction of a new fairy at Brady’s restaurant although he can still not see but it was nice to have a few more characters see the fairies. This has aspects of whimsical with the fairies with some intense mystery. Really keeps you engaged in the story. I look forward to see what happens next. Highly recommend.

This is a delightful addtion to this wonderful cozy series. Thank you to the publisher,, Net Galley and the author for the opportunity to review. My review opinions are my own. I have read this entire series and always enjoy returning to the magical world the author has created in beautiful Carmel California.

A Twinkle of Trouble by Daryl Wood Gerber the 5th instalment in A Fairy Garden Mystery series. Courtney is our savvy smart protagnist who can see fairies and owns a fairy garden shop that is popular in Carmel California. She holds classes, teas and sells all manner of fairy garden accessories that the locals and her friends adore. Fiona her personal fairy guide has returned from fairyland with her sister who she must instruct. Fiona is bonded to Courtney and adores her cat Pixie who she teases endlessly, The Fairies are a fun part of this series and can be seen by only a few people in town.

Courtney has to prepare for a local festival and is working in a garden plot she rented to grow her plants. Her shop is busy and her schedule barely gives her time to spend with her boyfriend Brady who owns a local cafe. They enjoy spending time in Carmel on the beach on their days off and their relationship is growing. I like that they both prioritize their business and respect each others time. One of the classes at her shop finds a influencer attending who is disliked by the attendents and told to leave. When she is found murdered at the festival Courtney is on the case assisting the local police detective much to his chagrin. Courtney is excellent at piecing together red herrings and clues as this case leads to another murder that shocks the village. Courtney is determined to solve the case and works a suspect board in her shop as she interviews people and soon finds herself close to the murderer. A very exciting sleuth !

The sleuth ,kept me guessing and trying to piece together clues as I read along. Courtney is excellent at solving murders and has help from her Fiona as well .as the locals. The sleuth was very well crafted to conclusion which was pleasingly surprising. I love the writing of this series as its so pleasing to read and the characters are richly drawn with the background of our beautiful Carmel Village. Well done to the author and please continue this wonderful series.

A TWINKLE OF TROUBLE by Daryl Wood Gerber
The Fifth Fairy Garden Mystery

Although they have a collective interest in gardening Courtney Kelly's new friends are a contentious bunch. Genevieve, a self styled influencer, has recently been panning businesses and people alike. She's even taken to bad mouthing Carmel-by-the-Sea's upcoming Summer Blooms Festival. Is it just sour grapes for not being invited to participate? Before Courtney can try to smooth things over with Genevieve, the influencer is found dead, murdered. When another in her circle becomes the prime suspect Courtney can't help but get involved. With her fairy friend Fiona by her side Courtney will dig deep to get the dirt on her new friends and find out just who's capable of murder!

A TWINKLE OF TROUBLE is a mystery about relationships, good and bad. Romantic relationships, relationships between relatives, friends, and pets too, all come into play. I like that Courtney has found new friends, but boy, what doozies these are! Courtney thinks they're just funny, but I found Genevieve, Daphne, and Scarlet to be just plain awful! I also call into question influencers. Who are they to tell me what to like, or not like? And unless they are experts in certain things I feel the same way about product reviewers. So automatically I didn't like Genevieve and Scarlet! And that says nothing about their personalities. I don't know why Courtney would ever want to hang out with them! Stick to good people like Joss, Meaghan, Renee, and, of course, Fiona. I love how Fiona is growing and that she was mentoring her sister in the fifth Fairy Garden Mystery. I laughed at their antics and sisterly affection, and annoyance. I also love Pixie and enjoy seeing the pets of Carmel-by-the-Sea.

The mystery itself was compelling. It was obvious to see that lots of people could have wanted to kill Genevieve. But when the second murder occurs the waters become even more muddied. Surely the killings were related, but how? With lots of suspects and nasty behavior Courtney has a lot to figure out, because even though she works with the police, she doesn't just leave it to them. Which almost gets her in BIG trouble this time!

With fairy fun, good gardening, and scrumptious food A TWINKLE OF TROUBLE makes even dastardly deaths delightful.

A Twinkle of Trouble is the fifth book in Daryl Wood Gerber's "A Fairy Garden Mystery" series. During the annual Summer Blooms Festival, two of Courtney's friends are murdered using gardening tools. Is someone targeting Courtney's online friend group, or might one of the members even be the killer? Courtney can't help but investigate with help from her fairy friends.

I have read all the books in this series, but I think you can read this as a standalone. This book, in particular, focuses on characters who are newer to the series so readers won't feel lost if they aren't familiar with the series' history.

I have always loved the setting of this series! The author does a wonderful job of bringing Carmel-by-the-Sea to life, and it is the perfect setting for fairies to live and communicate with humans and plants. Readers who enjoy magic and whimsy will be fond of Fiona and her fairy friends, who do play a part in solving the mystery. The author also includes recipes (with gluten-free options) that look yummy, but I have never tried to make any of them.

This book didn't quite meet the 5 star rating for me because I feel like Courtney's personal relationships didn't advance much. I would like to see more character development for Brady. I sometimes feel Courtney's relationship with Fiona (the fairy) is more intimate than her relationship with Brady (her boyfriend).

As for the mystery, there are multiple suspects so the killer wasn't obvious (at least to me). The amateur sleuth investigates and questions suspects; she doesn't just stumble blindly into solving the mystery (a pet peeve of mine in cozy mysteries).

The series is charming and offers a good entry point to cozy mysteries for fans of magical realism. You might just find yourself looking around to spot fairies where you live!
