Rereading some star wars comics for the 10 year anniversary of Marvel regaining star wars comics.
Reading via tpbs and past kindle acquisitions just counting it as 1 book.
Honestly not my favourite era of star wars comics there are some good stories by Gillen, but having read them several times they are not as engaging on reread, and Paks issues just aren't good. A good to middling omni but still worth a read for anyone new to star wars comics. They're just not my favourite.
it's so aggressively average and mediocre at best. unfortunately, while I'm sure all the artists are talented and capable on their own right, it appears that Disney and editorial overwatch go overboard on this book. there's no risks, there's no death, any romance is merely a bait and switch, and therefore no consequences of any degree. the art is the only thing that saves this rating, and subsequently, this book.
This book was fine, but still a pretty big step down from the Jason Aaron omnibus. The art is still good enough and the characters are all written consistently, the stories are just a lot more hit-or-miss and I found myself a lot more disinterested most of the time. Time to finally start getting into the post-Empire era!
The better volume of the two volume set, because the Gillen stories are fantastic!
This book is split into mostly 6 issue story arc, that are connected by an overarching plot, which makes this an enticing reading experience. The queen from Gillen's Darth Vader run really shines in here, but so does the shapeshifter guy.
The artwork is fantastic, all of these planets really look beautiful.
The book does fall off unfortunately (story & artwork), because the last ark by Pak is really boring and the one shot at the end isn't exciting either. Fortunately these parts are just in the end of this book.
I would definetly recommend this book, it could also be read on it's own without the inferior Aaron Omnibus.
I had so much fun with this omnibus. Makes you realize how little time you actually get to spend with Han, Leia and Luke all in one place hanging out like buds. Gillen picks some fantastic areas of focus and tells some really interesting stories (realizing he may be one of my all-time favorite writers in comics) and Pak caps it off with a great Star Wars film of a story at the end. Gets me excited and hopeful for Soule/Star Wars and Pak/Vader omnibuses.
I've been reading this series as paperback volumes, but since I'm getting rid of them I decided I'd attack the last few in an enormous digital omnibus. Not just because I want add another review to my Goodreads tally... of course not... ahem. Anyway, I'm glad I did it this way because the storyline reads so much better in an omnibus than in seperate volumes. Unfortunately, the weaknesses remain and there are many of them. That said, Hope Dies is still brilliant.
Gillen does an alright job, overall; Pak's contributions at the end are largely forgettable.
I really like their style of artwork. This whole series was particularly interesting because it makes a realistic aftermath progression between Episode 4 and 5. The empire would really strike hard against the rebels and its not like Hoth would have been a first choice. I really like the development of Luke in that he desperately wants to become a Jedi without having any formal Jedi training at that point.
Overall fun storylines, great artwork, and just good action.
again, excellent writing, but too much larrocca. And peterson’s art clearly suffers from him forgetting to redraw the fabric on the action figures he’s using for reference.
