Spire Station #1

Space for Love

Rate this book
A human starting over light years from home…. Accepting a job on Spire Station sounded great in theory. Now that I’m on an enormous alien space station with no humans in sight, I’m questioning the sanity of that choice. But it’s not all bad. When my best friend Mezli tricks me into using a pleasure sim, I find an unexpected connection with Breks, the intriguing alien running the sim. He’s everything I’d want in a partner—charming, empathetic, and so damn sexy. The only problem? He hides behind a holo and refuses to let me see his true form. For all I know, he could be a sentient ooze, but I’m too far gone to care. I want him no matter what he looks like. Now I just have to find a way to prove it. An alien desperate to forget his heartbreak… When I took a job at SimTech Suites, I’d planned to use pleasure sims to escape any thoughts of my ex. However, a far more enticing source of distraction shows up—a purple-haired human named Fina with the body of a goddess and shy, delightful wit to match. Too bad I’m nothing like the attractive holo I use for my job. I’m a seladin with sharp teeth, brutal claws, and menacing features that terrify most aliens. Her uneasy reaction after our chance meeting out on the station only confirms that I can never show her my true form. No matter how desperate I am to make her mine. Space for Love is a cozy sci-fi romance featuring a plus-size FMC, a monstrous alien MMC, and enough spice to keep you warm even in the coldness of space.

I love alien romance and especially when the H is more shy or self-conscious about his alienness comparative to the h being a human so this blurb intrigued me right away. I did enjoy it and was engaged, but even though a friend's review had a warning about miscommunication, I found that aspect of the storyline to be frustrating. That and the length it went on are the main reasons my rating was lowered a bit. I can be sensitive about miscommunication and other GR friends will likely just be able to enjoy the sweeter parts of this alien romance. Feelings about exes and difficulties with relationships are also mentioned frequently in parts and lessened my enjoyment of some scenes, which is just a personal preference too.

Fina (h) is a rare human in the area of space she's moved to. Fina's also pushing herself out of her comfort zone because she's not known for taking chances, in addition to being self-conscious about herself. Her best friend (who's an alien) tries to "help", sometimes aggressively and uncomfortably with meeting new aliens, wearing more daring outfits, etc.. It's during one of those uncomfortable nudges that Fina "meets" Breks (H), at a simulation center, except Breks' true form intimidates others easily so he's working at the center through a hologram. Even through an interface though, there's an interest and attraction to each other. However, Fina also encounters Breks unknowingly in real life and both make negative assumptions about the other. In spite of this, they form a friendship in real life, while Fina attempts to encourage Breks to consider something via their interactions at the sim center, without knowing who he is. So that's the premise and this is an overall cute romance that has a shyer H who's recently recovering from a heartbreak and a plus size h who's trying to be more badass. Written in first person, dual POV. No true ow/om drama (though each has an ex show up, it's made clear that there's no interest in rekindling the romances - but I didn't see the purpose in either ex being present personally) and neither is a virgin.

I really liked how the author included cultural misunderstandings and when Breks and Fina would clarify these with each other (some weren't clarified right away). Also that Breks' culture was big on wooing through acts of service, those were aww inducing moments. There were also times when each had to reassure the other because of their self-doubts. More of these scenes were later in the book, once the miscommunications and hidden identity were resolved though and I wish that the resolution had been earlier. But there were still cute moments of Fina with Breks at the center and of Fina with him as friends. Breks does also make up for the hidden identity, not sharing and is extra considerate of Fina and grateful for her giving him a second chance once the secrets are unveiled, which I appreciated.

This is a steamy book, sometimes through simulation and sometimes real life physical interactions. Consent was important and Breks does offer some unusual features with what he's packing and even a side effect. The steaminess does start before the relationship is firmly established, but gets better once they're officially together imo. Fina's self-consciousness about her figure does come out at times in her daily living scenes and during steamy times a couple times, but it's clear that Breks is very into her. Just as a head's up, there is one steamy scene that involves some domination too.

I didn't find the main side characters as fun as some other reviewers unfortunately. Fina's best friend irritated me and I didn't enjoy the inclusion of her ex. I did like Breks' sister as a character though! The setting was fun to read about with the various alien species and cultures, as well as the different sectors and some of the descriptions of different daily life and work culture.

I did love their HEA and the epilogue a few months down the road where they're celebrating their anniversary in a steamy way and then with an extra dose of cuteness. I very much felt they were in love and would last. I wish they'd had more of those solid relationship moments earlier cause I'm greedy. The final chapter is Fina's best friend's POV and a lead-in to the next book.

This is an absolute delight of an alien romance! It is one of those books that combines many great elements to create a fully immersive story. It takes tropes like secret identity, fish out of water, size difference, adding them to plus size romance set on a space station, and throwing in dynamic secondary characters with high heat.

The Basics
* MF Alien Romance - Alien M + Human F
* Setting - future, space station, The Spire; alien species are known and live together
* 1st Person Dual POV
* 1st in a planned series; HEA for the couple; next book with different MCs.
* Representation
* Plus size FMC
* Anxiety
* Non-binary pronoun use by secondary characters
* FMC is 35 (unsure on MMC’s age)
* Spice - on page, detailed & descriptive, several occasions, some involving Ds/kink
* Content
* Author’s note includes list
*

Fina is starting a new life as one of the few humans on a space station (think city size place). She has one friend, the bubbly, four armed Mezli (who I adore and want more of RIGHT NOW) and affirmations to be badass babe. Breks is recovery from a break up, spending time working in a Sim lab as it lets him escape into the sims more often, and in general just surviving. They meet, it’s flirty; they meet again, or do they? There may be a little inadvertent subterfuge creating a bit of a secret identity situation that may kind of grow to be a whole thing. (But every one loves a good apology, right?)

The world crafted here is fully formed, with many layers, species, and cultures combined and living together on The Spire. The time and care spent on the details of the world building is evident before the first chapter, just reading the Glossary. The introduction to the many species and cultures was artful, it never felt tedious, and always left me wanting just a bit more (not in an unfulfilled sense, but in a I want to stay in this world sense!)

What I loved (besides everything)
* The courting! I adore a good courting ritual and this was so freaking sweet.
* Baking and cooking; acts of service and meaningful small gifts
* The way the
* The fully formed secondary characters
* The way body image was handled

I don’t want to gush too much or go completely overboard, but this was absolutely wonderful! I loved it enough I ordered the print copy from the author (I have very books in physical form!)

Spoiler below regarding end, I can’t tell if my tag is working on mobile!

I received an ARC of this book, but the opinions in this review are my own.

Maerlon is the literal jackpot. I guess it's because he's not straight (sorry not sorry).
He worships the ground beneath Fina's feet and I'm totally here for it.

I don't really buy the explanation why Fina didn't know what was going on but besides this I really love the book and can't wait for Mezil's story (there has to be one?!)

Socially anxious people UNITE!
These two were so effing precious together. I loved that they were both convinced the other wasn’t attracted to them when they were. The virtual sex room was a fun meet cute as well.
Also, love the positive plus size rep!

it was a nice and cute story. i love a good secret identity book🤭

but it was a bit long imo. at this point they're clearly in love and i don't care what could happen more in the next couple of chapters 😔 since they had lots of sweet moments together before his identity revealed, i just got bored when they get together 🫥

but overall it was a nice read 🤍

I received an ARC copy of this book, and I’m so glad that I did. That being said, I’m always honest in my reviews regardless.

This book was the cutest shy male x sunshine woman. Our MMC was so nervous that our FMC wouldn’t like him, and she takes it upon herself to let him know how wrong he is. Once the MMC hits his stride, he starts leaving our sunshine FMC all flustered. If you’re not a fan of miscommunication proceed with caution (it’s not major but it’s there).

This book had everything. The representation for body types, ethnicities, and LGBTQIA+ was perfect and not overdone (by overdone I mean try-hard ish, the author made it feel normal/effortless and wonderful in this book).

My only critique is that it was a bit difficult to keep the alien species straight in my brain sometimes, added with I got a bit overwhelmed with the glossary in the beginning. Nothing major though, and I finally got a handle on it halfway through.

It was one of my favorite low-stakes alien romances. No high stress situations, just fluffy and cute.

My rating might seem low compared to the average, but I promise this is still a book I’d recommend to people looking for something very specific:

Cosy sci-fi romance with relatively low stakes, little focus on anything but the romance between the FMC and MMC, with a queer-normative world and bi characters galore.

It’s also features a classic example of the idiots-in-love trope, where both main characters have their hang ups and insecurities and frequently assume the worst of how their actions were received.

Key takeaway: it’s cute, sweet, and has spice.

Throughly enjoyed the ARC I received of this cute story - anxious dumbass X anxious dumbass is my favourite when it's done well, and this was done brilliantly! I love to be frustrated by two adorable people getting in their own way, what can I say? Other reviewers have done a better job than me of actually giving any idea of what happens, so please accept my enthusiastic flailing as review!

✨ I received an ARC of this book, but the review is my own opinion.✨

WOW! My first true alien romance and I’m blown away!
This books feels like slipping into the dating world on the Citadel with just as rich worldbuilding without feeling clunky or out of place.

The protagonist is so relatable in the way she sees and interacts with the world but has enough character for her experiences to feel genuine to her as a person.
The relationship made me feel all gooey and I was crushing right away, and the spice was top notch. (Extra spicy 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️)
ALSO THE BODY REPRESENTATION!
Beautifully done, I loved everything about it, especially the way Fina feels about herself.

Low risks, high chemistry in a killer environment.
I have nothing bad to say about this book except for the length. I wish it were longer.

I’m thrilled that there will be more set in this world, and I wait patiently for the next one.

Dnf cause I’m Demisexual and it’s real hard to enjoy the premise. I thought I could get over it, but I just can’t. I really wanted to like it cause awkward cinnamon roll alien MMCs are my weakness but I can’t handle how they meet and it being so sexual like immediately, nah I can’t do it. It’s written well and I’m sure other people would enjoy it. I couldn’t find anything inherently wrong with it. It’s just a preference thing. I will gladly try another one by this author, though! If they write a more slow burn story in the future.

Things I loved:
* Plus size FMC
* THE COVER
* MMC's design
* MMC is a total romantic
* Mistaken identity
* Making up for the deception
* Some humor
* Glow in the dark space flowers
* Great consent

Things I wasn't keen on:
* Miscommunication/deception
* A bit instalust/instalove between Fina and Breks
* Sort of cliffhanger in the epilogue, but not about the main couple
* I was left wanting more Jezrit lol

This is my first Emily Antoinette and it will not be my last!
The story was sweet, smexy, and the world building and side characters were well fleshed out.
I am so happy I had the forethought to buy the second book in this series.
Hopefully she has copies of the third book at the signing event next week.
If you, like me, were sleeping on Emily Antoinette's writing, then this is your wake up call!

A very cute, spicy start to a new series.

The anxiety and nervousness of both the FMC and MMC felt just a bit overdone to me. Otherwise, I really enjoyed it.

Listen.. I didn’t read the blurb when I picked this book out, so I didn’t know it was gonna be a miscommunication troupe which is my least favorite.

It was definitely cozy and I liked the day to day aspect!

However, I struggled to like the main two characters. They both have anxiety! We get it! I wish their anxiety was written better. It got to a point where they just became insufferable to me.

Also!!! Her best friend is not a nice person! Like at all! The epilogue set it up for her book so maybe she’ll have a redemption arc, but jeez she is not a good friend.

4.25 ⭐️ THE miscommunication redemption arc!

This book was so stinking cute! It's an alien romance with so much heart and soul, that you can't help but fall a little for both MCs.

As an pledged hater of the miscommunication trope, I was kind of iffy going into this book, but truly I should've trusted that Emily Antoinette wouldn't miss. She has yet to fail me so far, and I only have one book left to read from her published works. This took that horrible, sadly overused trope and turn it on its head, making it an enticing adventure - a discovery of how, when and where is it that you can meet your soulmate and not even notice... Or do you?

This was so fun to read! I cannot recommend it enough - especially if you're into alien/monster romances with tons of spice.

🌶️🌶️🌶️ / 5 - The mmc's... mmm... fluids (lol) are mildly hallucinogenic to humans (like the fmc) and it increases arousal. So, yeah, this was really fun.

A wonderfully enjoyable, funny, cozy and spicy sci-fi romance!
We meet our female main character, Fina, starting her new life on an intergalactic space station where she strikes up an unlikely friendship with a male behind a hologram at a simulation entertainment business, but why does he feel so familiar?

I adored Fina and Maerlon! Her sweet softness mixed with his brooding was beyond perfect! This love story had me kicking my feet and giggling, not to mention the spice was SPICY!! I sped through this book in a little over a day, I could not put it down! I cant wait to see where this series will lead!

This sweet, utterly charming book is what happens when you put the two most awkward people in the known universe together. Our heroine, Fina, is a curvy girl who, at the request of her alien best friend, has taken a job on the space station, Spire. She has NO self-esteem to speak of, her social awkwardness is off the scale, and boy is she an over-thinker! Same, girl, same.

Our hero, Maerlon, is a beautiful-by-human-standards alien male who works on the space station. He is just coming off a bad relationship, has NO self-esteem to speak of, and is so awkward around others it’s just painful.

This books is just a comedy of errors from beginning to end. Fina meets Maerlon under guise of a hologram named Breks. Through frequent conversations, they fall hard for each other, but when they meet In Real life (unbeknownst to Fina) he mistakes her human reaction as fear.

The social misunderstandings are thoroughly believable in this lovely, charming novel. The main characters are a delight. I loved every word. A healthy ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ read. Now what am I gonna read….

Easily one of my favorite recent sci-fi romance reads! An fun, cozy, funny and spicy sci-fi romance!

The story starts with our human FMC, Fina, starting a new phase of her life on an intergalactic space station, the Spire. Everything is a new experience and very isolating to her. She meets with our MMC quickly and the duo felt very genuine and truly a good mix of personalities. Their individual insecurities and shared miscommunication makes for an interesting start to romance and several other difficult situations.

Space for Love is a highly enjoyable, quick read with great tension and spicy scenarios 3.5 on the spice scale for me. The plus size representation is phenomenal and the two have extremely good chemistry.
Can't wait to read anything else that comes out in this setting - I loved the book and wish there was more. I demolished it too quickly.

✨ Thank you to the author, Emily Antoinette, for an ARC of this book. The review is my own opinion.✨

Cozy read! Loved this, but hate the miscommunication trope, and it’s soooo popular. Luckily it didn’t take over the plot, like others have. The world building was interesting? And loved the chemistry between the mmc and the fmc.

i accidentally read The Spire Station books so far out of order, so while I enjoyed the book one I just really loved book two. Probably caused a smidge of unfair comparisons but the world building of The Spire Station has been pretty interesting. I’d love to see art of all the species mentioned so far.

(I also wonder why an Americanized tipping culture might continue in space but that’s just the thoughts of a former server lol).

Not a fan of miscommunication tropes

“I want you to know that I’m interested in you. Whatever the real you is.”

Overall I liked the book. Started to drag a bit in the middle. I’m not a fan of miscommunication tropes but I knew going in that there would be.
I both liked and was annoyed by the MMC.

dnf at 40%, the writing was mostly good but the dialogue was rough and the scenarios felt unnatural. I would still read more from this author! I think the book just wasn't to my taste.
