Having recently been divorced from her husband, Kate Thurston feels it's time to have a break. Kate and her two children, Georgia aged fourteen and Liam aged eight have been having a hard time since the divorce. So when, Kate discovers she has inherited her grandfather's homestead she decides it's time to have that break even though the children are not happy about going.

It had been sixteen years since, Kate had been in Widgerry, but still she knew that North Star was only about half an hour away. Kate knew her grandfather had let the homestead run down over the years, but she had no idea how bad it really was. The overgrown grass throughout the property was only the beginning. The homestead was quite large comprising of seven bedrooms, but on closer inspection it was obvious that the homestead needed a lot of work. Kate’s wasn't sure if she'd be able to get it up to scratch with the limited money she had, but she would do what she could. Of course the children especially, Georgia would've been more than happy to return home, but Kate was determined to see it through.

Kate hadn’t seen, Jenny her childhood friend for such a long time. So when they see each other in North Star they have so much to catch up on. Jenny is now married with two children of her own who are close in age to Kate’s children. Knowing that Kate has a big job ahead of her with the repairs, Jenny and her husband do all they can to help out.

Kate had only been at the homestead a little while when she meets the local police officer, John. Their first meeting was more on a professional basis when, Georgia got herself into a bit of trouble. From that day on, John gave Kate a helping around the homestead whenever he had a spare moment. Kate was so pleased to have another pair of hands to help out with the repairs and she quite enjoyed his company. But Kate had secrets from her past and that's where she wanted them to stay. Then one day unexpectedly, Kate’s ex-husband turns up who will not only turn Kate’s, but everyone's life upside down.

This was a very enjoyable read and one that I didn't want to end. A fabulous story of suspense and romance which I found extremely entertaining. Karly Lane is a very talented Aussie author which I have no hesitation in HIGHLY recommending.

North Star is about Kate Thurston divorcee and mother of two. After her divorce, Kate Thurston did not know what to do and was wondering aimlessly. However, this change when Kate inherited her family farm. To Kate, this was an opportunity to improve her families lives for the better. Kate Thurston moves to the small community of Widgerry. However, everything was fine until a body was found on North Star. The readers of North Star will follow Kate and her family to see what happens.

I enjoy reading North Star. I have like all of Karly Lane books that I have read and North Star did not disappoint. I like the way Karly Lane describes how children react when their parent's divorce. Also, like the way Karly Lane handle family violence. I like Karly Lane portrayal of her characters and how they interact with each other. I enjoy Karly Lane writing style that allows her readers to become involved with the story.

Readers of North Star will learn about other ways to help farm properties to be financial propositions. Also, readers of North Star will see how childhood trauma can affect the suffer later in life.

I recommend this book.

Four and a half stars. If it hadn’t been for the good reviews of others here who opinions I value, I would never have picked up this novel, since I hate covers with girls in the bushy hats.
After leaving her husband who is a gambling addict, Kate takes the family back to the property North Star she inherited from her grandfather who she despised and with good reason. Though the place has been let go and also has many negative memories, she still figures the children 8 year old Liam and 14 year old Georgia who is in with the wrong crowd in the city will benefit from the change. Needless to say, Georgia is anything but thrilled by this change. Georgia is one of those characters you’d want to shake some sense into. It makes me thankful I never had a teenager like this one. I liked the setting and the character of Kate even though at times I didn't understand some of her behaviour, Jenny, loyal friend from Kate's childhood, is also a great character. I loved the relationship between Jenny and her husband. The other character is the Australian setting which I enjoyed. There’s mystery, a romance and a great deal about friendship as well as the attitudes of small country towns. This is the second novel I have read by this author and I really enjoyed it. Towards the end, I simply had to read when I should really have been doing other things.

With the fourteen-year-old teenage hormones well and truly working overtime, Kate Thurston was struggling to stay calm in the face of daughter Georgia’s sulky bad temper. Eight-year-old Liam was finding their life changing circumstances a little hard too, but he was easier to control. As the three of them neared the end of their long journey from the city to the country, and the little town of Widgerry near North Star, the property Kate had just inherited from her grandfather, she was looking forward to a rest. The heat was relentless, and the sight of a pool at their motel lifted their spirits somewhat.

Kate and the children’s lives had changed in recent months with Kate’s divorce from their father, Andy, and the loss of their home and possessions through Andy’s addiction. The children didn’t understand; Kate hadn’t told them any of their father’s problems so as to shelter them and not taint their love for their Dad, but Kate found their blame of her for the situation a little hard to take at times. So when notification of her inheritance had arrived, she decided it would be a wonderful opportunity for a new start for all of them.

Discovering North Star had been let run down terribly during the last years of her grandfather’s life, Kate’s determination to restore the property to its former glory looked like it would make or break her. For there were secrets in Kate’s past which no-one knew about, and she wasn’t about to let the walls which surrounded that part of her life crumble. As Kate’s hard work began to pay off, a tentative friendship with the handsome local policeman began, her friendship with the best friend from her childhood rekindled and Liam at least, was settling in well, suddenly Andy arrived unexpectedly and Kate’s life was rocked to the core once again.

I loved this book! Karly Lane is a new (to me) Aussie author with this being the first I have read by her. I also met her recently (she’s a lovely person!) and she signed my books. The tingling suspense blended through the story is fantastic, the characters are great (even teenage Georgie!) and the blending of the history of Kate’s ancestors and the early days of the lovely old homestead is vivid. The twist at the end was one I certainly didn't expect either! I have no hesitation is recommending this book highly.

North Star is an entertaining contemporary novel from author Karly Lane that combines elements of suspense and romance in the Australian bush. Kate Thurston has left a disastrous marriage and returned to her home town to raise her children on the inherited property on which she grew up. North Star holds few good memories for Kate but with little choice other than to make a go of it, she sets out to restore the house and land and create a stable home for her rebellious teenage daughter and reserved young son. With hard work and determination Kate begins to rebuild her life, reconnecting with old friends and developing new attachments, until her ex husband shows up forcing Kate to confront her tragic past and endangering her dreams for the future.

Lane packs a lot into this relatively modest length novel. The plot includes romance, mystery and includes social issues such as drug and gambling addiction, domestic violence, rape, abandonment, suicide and murder. It's an ambitious combination, yet Lane pulls it off quite well.
Kate is a complex character, she has worked hard to escape the family 'curse' however, living back at North Star brings her tortured memories to the surface. I think Lane captures Kate's internal conflicts well, particularly demonstrating how her past affects her present attitude and decisions. The reasons for Kate's marriage breakdown are understandable, as is her reluctance to become involved in a new relationship with Officer John Cafferty. As a mother to a headstrong teenage girl, I could relate well to Kate's concerns and struggles in regards to her parenting decisions. Everything for Kate though is complicated by the secrets she hides.
I really liked the suspense element to North Star, the secrets surrounding not only Kate and the circumstances of her mother's death but also the mystery with regards to Henry's twin's fate, which adds another layer of depth to Kate's family history. The pacing is good though the mystery of Kate's mothers death and her grandfather's brother isn't revealed until around a third of the way in, I would have liked it to been foreshadowed a little earlier though both elements are linked to the abuse hinted at quite early on.
The rural Australian setting of North Star is appealing and Lane captures the details that typify a small country town, such as the difficulty of being anonymous as well as the importance of grazing land, water and even Race Day.

I enjoyed North Star, it offered more than I expected and was an engaging read from start to finish. Another fine example of the growing genre of 'rural fiction', North Star should appeal to a wide cross section of readers. Lane's next book, Morgan's Law, is due for release in May 2012 and I am looking forward to it.

North Star is the first book by Australian author Karly Lane and it's the first book I've read by her. It was a quick, easy read that I flew through in two days as it was really enjoyable. Set in the Australian outback, the story follows divorcee Kate Thurston as she and her two children head to the family farm to start a new life. Kate was a likeable woman with enough skeletons in her closest that made her journey better then average. Her little boy was adorable but her teenage daughter Georgia was an absolute nightmare. I really didn't like her at all. The things Georgia said to her mother were awful and I found myself wishing that Kate didn't let her get away with so much. She did come good in the end but that was too little too late for me. Three quarters of the way through I was ready to give North Star 5 starts but a few things towards the end stopped me from doing this. The first was that right from the start it is obvious who Kate is going to get her happily ever after with. I like it when there's tension and it's not clear how a couple will end up together. This was too straight forward. The blurb didn't help by spoiling what will come between Kate and her boyfriend, John. Kate's ex. So I was expecting a lot of angst and heartbreak. With a history of addiction I was also thinking there would be more drama. Instead the ex appears, he causes a spot of bother, he's scared off by John and disappears. It would have been so much better if he stirred up more trouble! I almost think he was a waste of space. The last thing was that it was way too easy for Kate to go from city chic to country girl. I felt like anyone, including me, could just leave their old life behind and reside in the outback by the time I was finished. Thankfully I know better and that includes knowing I'll be reading more of Karly Lane's books!

Karly's books never fail to draw me in! Whilst ℕ𝕠𝕣𝕥𝕙 𝕊𝕥𝕒𝕣 is one of her oldies, it's such a goodie!!

Kate Thurston grew up on her grandparents property, North Star- if her negligent mother wasn't in the picture that is. Despite the fond memories of happier times spent with her gran and best friend, they are overshadowed with the cruelty of her grandfather. Until now, Kate has not stepped foot back onto the property since her mother killed herself and soon after, was ordered to leave.

Lately, Kate's life has had a major upheaval. Her husbands gambling addiction has led to their divorce, and their teenage daughter is getting too involved in the wrong crowd. So, with the news that she's the sole benefactor of her grandfather's estate gives Kate the clause to move her family out to safety. But some of the townsfolk aren't too happy with her plans for the property at all!

But moving back to the homestead and the area causes issues. As Kate restores the property back to its former glory, a family mystery/curse becomes apparent. If that wasn't enough to deal with, the sudden appearance of her ex husband brings another bigger set of issues that will change her life together.

I freaking loved Kate and sexy cop John's dynamic! From the get go, there is some raw sexual tension between them. It also helps that John is so overprotective of Kate and her kids. Speaking of which, whilst Georgia is a little terror, you can't help falling in love with sensitive Liam.

Reading this in 2022 is like stepping into the past with mentions of using phone books to hire services, home phones, iPods and paying with cash or credit (no debit cards in sight!) How did we cope ten years ago without modern conveniences and technology?!

Another fab read from Karly!

The cool thing about this little Aussie Rural Romance read was the reality of teenage girls! “Only someone who hadn’t gone throughout the hell of living with teenage girl could possible believe that, thought Kate. It was becoming easy to identity other parents of teenage daughters. If they still sounded positive and encouraging, they didn’t have a teenager yet.” The author also in her acknowledgement section offered words of positivity to parents of teenage girls. What a nice lady! (I’m struggling big time with this topic right now).

This was ever the sweet read, lovingly chosen for me by my 11 year old son. I directed him to my unorganised mess of a bookshelf and told him to pick his mum one!

A quick pacey read, again set in an area familiar to me – the upper north coast of NSW – where my parents have retired. I do enjoy reading familiar settings. Mostly a romancey read where we meet single mum Kate cleverly doing up the property bequeathed to her by her Grandfather with some family mystery scattered amongst. This was a wholesome, pleasant and possibly, a tad predictable read.

This is the first book I've read of Karly Lane's and I must say I was thoroughly impressed. I loved the action packed story line, the way in which you can connect and sympathise with the realistic characters and the passion with which Karly has obviously poured into this novel. I found that every time I picked this book up I didn't want to put it down. I was so drawn to the characters and the situations that were unfolding I just wanted to keep reading to find out how the current situation was going to pan out.

Poor Kate experienced so much pain and heartache throughout her years, I'm so glad that her move back to her homeland worked out for the best and she met such a nice man that will honor and protect her. You could almost write a sequel to this book! I can't wait to read some more titles by this author.

4.5*s Loved this book it was just perfect and the audio was great, aussie accents well done.

Kate works 2 jobs, has gone thru a bitter divorce as her ex became a out of control gambling addict. They lost their paid off home and everything but when he has the kids for the weekend and the people he owes money too come to beat him up she has had it, files a restraining order and gets full custody.
She has two children, Georgia aged fourteen and Liam aged eight. Georgia is being the teenager from HELL, she is sneaking out and hanging with 19yr old guy named Snake... yeah every mother's nightmare - she is 14 YRs OLD!!
When her estranged grandfather who was a mean old bastard dies and leaves her his run down ranch she moves with the kids to try to get a fresh start. Kate grew up sometimes (her mother dumped her a lot) at this ranch and it hold horrible memories. She starts to reconnect with her best friend and family and has hopes the worst is over. Turns out there is a lot of worst left for her.

On the bright side the local hot cop has a thing for her, of course she meets him right away as he picked her daughter up sneaking out at the liquor store. Yeah the girl is really acting out and blames Kate for the divorce and everything else. Kate is trying to shelter her kids from knowing what a irresponsible jerk the ex has become and doesn't tell them the truth about everything.

There is more than one old mystery, some drama and suspense with the ex, and family's so-called curse that may end up with Kate arrested.
Really great listen and totally enjoyed this book.

I was pleasantly surprised when I started reading this book, thought it was refreshing and good to read an Australian novel. There was the makings of a good story and on the whole it did not disappoint, though I think it could have gone further. In fact when I came to the end I did not realise that the book had ended, I thought there has to be more. I had a look to see if there was a Book 2, but could not find one. Thought there would have been more on the neighbour who wanted to buy the land. I thought he would have made some more mischief other than the little bit he did with the fence. Also thought that the drama with the husband ended too abruptly and too simply. I thought that John must have killed him because there was no further mention of Andy. Then there was Liam, I was expecting him to be in danger somehow, maybe recreating the story of how Harry disappeared. The little bit of drama around him was too flat. I was also disappointed that there was no identification of the body. There is the makings of a great story here, but sadly I think it fell short of the mark. The story line is very flat. More depth could be put into the characters and the plot. The book is an easy read, just lacking a little substance.

It’s been a little while since my last Karly read and it was good to be back!

Kate escapes to her old rundown family home that she has inherited, following a bitter divorce. The place is very much in need of some love and herself, friends and townsfolk are embarking on a journey to restore it. Amongst all the hard work, she finds herself falling in love, dealing with a troubled teen and the strained relationship and her ex-husband turning up unannounced, that sets off a chain of events that could flip her world upside down.

It is a story of change, hard work, overcoming a strained mother/daughter relationship, turning bad memories into good memories, letting go of baggage, accepting help, uncovering family secrets, that you can escape abuse and start over, that we can’t shelter our children from everything and sometimes the truth can set us free.

I loved Kate’s best friend Jenny and her family were more family than friend and her support, forgiveness, advice and just being there for her friend was beautiful and John’s maturity, care and understanding of things spoke volumes.

Now what to read next from Karly? I’m thinking Morgan’s Law!

So I'm kinda kicking myself for not discovering the awesomeness of Karly Lane sooner. (Although, I guess, now that means I have lots of awesomeness to catch up on, rather than waiting for new books to come out)

North Star is the story of Kate, a single mother who has returned to her childhood home after the death of her Grandfather. They need a fresh start, and this is the perfect opportunity.

The thing I'm loving about these books is that it's the woman's story. Although the men and romance play a part, it's more about Kate getting her life back on track, and that just happens to include a love interest, rather than the romance being her whole story.

As a single mother, I can totally relate to Kate's experiences, which I think made this book mean a little bit more to me. An absolutely fantastic read!

My first time reading this author and it certainly won't be my last. I'm lucky my library has a vast collection or I'd go broke.
This is a fabulous Australian story, even though I'm a city girl in Melbourne I do love my virtual visits to rural areas via stories.
Kate packs up her kids and heads back 'home'...where she mostly grew up during her rocky childhood. The property has been left to her and it's time for a fresh beginning. I really enjoyed their journey, Kate learning to trust again, the teen daughter working her way through her attitude and the young boy growing more confident.
A body? Was it murder? How old is this skeleton? Is this part of her past and will their lives be forever changed?
I absolutely loved this story. Get your slippers on, make a cuppa and settle in.

Really enjoyed this story.

Kate is struggling following her divorce, having to sell everything for her then husband to pay off his gambling debts.

She decides to move back to her childhood town, as she has inherited her grandfathers estate (albeit a run down estate).

She ruffles the feathers of some townies, and makes friends of the others. Her teenage daughter is not impressed with anything to do with the town or the house.

Kate falls for the hunky cop.

The story unfolds back to Kate being a child and a teenager and the dangers she faced.

I’ll definitely read books from this author as she writes lovely, I do enjoy Aussie stations/rural/ farming type stories.

This was a really good read. In typical Karly Lane style the characters were realistic, relatable and down to earth. The female lead was a strong, independent woman who struggled with everyday issues - from the challenges of raising a rebellious teenage girl to the traumatic childhood she experienced. I loved that this book had a good combination of drama, romance and mystery.

Since her divorce, Kate has felt like she can’t get back on even ground. She’s been working two jobs to keep a roof over her head and the head of her two children after having to sell the lovely family home in order to pay her husband’s gambling debts. He has continued to gamble, continued to make excuses and Kate has had to take action to keep her children out of the situation. As a result, her moody teenage daughter Georgia isn’t feeling very kindly towards her at the moment and it gets even worse when Kate is informed that her grandfather, a mean alcoholic that she’s had no contact with in over fifteen years, has died and left her North Star, a large property.

At first Kate’s plans were to fix up the house, which has been neglected and get it back on the market. But being back there, being in the house where she spent time with her beloved gran and felt real love, plants a seed of hope within her. Kate owns the property outright so it doesn’t come with the trappings of a mortgage. If she can find a way to make a little income, just enough to cover what they need, she thinks that they can make North Star their future. Georgia is less than enthusiastic, not willing to leave behind her friends and her social life for a dump in the middle of no where. Kate’s younger child Liam is more open to the idea and Kate hopes that living in a small town where he’ll have the chance to make friends will give her son the confidence he so desperately needs.

Kate, along with her childhood friend Jenny, Jenny’s husband and two children, begins the hard work of making the homestead liveable again. Just as she feels she’s beginning to make progress, in all aspects of her life by setting the house to rights, finding her feet in the new town, even making a friend that could possibly turn into something more, Kate faces opposition from a neighbouring grazier who seems determined to bully her off her land. And then her ex-husband turns up, seeing opportunity in Kate’s new found inheritance. He isn’t above playing games using their children and threatening Kate with a secret she has held close for many long years.

I’ve had a copy of North Star on my kindle for some time – ever since I read Karly’s second book, Morgan’s Law. She’s since released a 3rd, Bridie’s Choice which I’ve been hearing excellent things about and before I read that, I wanted to catch up by reading this one as well. I always like having a few books on the kindle that I think I’ll really enjoy in case I go away and am looking for something like a ‘sure bet’ to read and North Star was definitely one of these.

Kate was such a tough, admirable character. She’d had a horrible childhood, the only bright spot the times she went with her gran on North Star. She married young after being forced off North Star in tragedy and her and her husband worked hard to pay off their house only to then lose it to her husband’s gambling debts. You get the feeling that Kate craves stability, both emotional and financial after her upbringing and for her to lose the house was a huge blow. She had to work two jobs just to pay for the rent in a small flat, somewhere really unsuitable for herself and her two children. Her children have also been affected terribly by the marriage breakdown. Her teenage daughter Georgia is pushing the boundaries – sneaking out, experimenting with drugs and alcohol. Kate thinks that hopefully, being removed from those influences might have a positive effect on her daughter, even if she’s brought her attitude all the way out to North Star. Kate’s son Liam is younger and painfully shy. He needs some stability and structure desperately and Kate hopes to provide all that and more with the idea she’s had for starting a business on the property.

What I enjoyed about this novel was Kate’s attitude to her ‘fresh start’. She works so hard at fixing up the house to make it habitable again, she tries so hard with her children. She doesn’t lose her temper with Georgia when she’s rude and pushing the boundaries when it would be tempting to come down on her more severely. She also takes things very cautiously with John, the local police officer who makes it quite clear that he’s very interested in Kate for the long term. Kate hasn’t been involved with many men at all and she has some trauma in her past that makes it hard for her and she also has herself and her children to think of. They’ve all been hurt recently and you can tell that she wants to make sure that this is absolutely right before she proceeds. Unfortunately just as she makes that decision and takes that step, her ex-husband rolls into town, determined to make trouble, especially when he spots that Kate is slowly forging a life for herself without him and with someone else.

North Star is such an enjoyable book, it’s one of those wonderful reads that you just sink into and emerge from hours later, not quite sure where the time went. There’s an undercurrent of suspense running through the latter half as a story from long ago is unfolded. I can’t wait to get to Bridie’s Choice when I get home!

An entertaining, interesting and fun read. I enjoyed the surprises that came in this book, the characters (except for a couple), the story and the read.
Thanks #KarlyLane
