Hard Close (Lexington Avenue Express - Short Fiction)
Barry sat behind his littered desk watching her as she dialed the telephone. I've got a live one, he thought. He swiveled in his chair and popped a breath mint into his mouth without her noticing. As she talked, he began typing information into the sales-contract form flashing on the screen in front of him.
"But, honey," she cooed into her cell phone. "It's so perfect for us and they'll give us top dollar for our Tercel! Won't you just come take a look?"
"Absolutely not," Hector said. He knew his wife had bought the salesman's spiel. The last thing he needed right now was another payment.
"But--"
"ABSOLUTELY NOT!" he repeated, shouting this time. They'd been married less than a year. During those few months, he'd allowed his new bride to run up nearly nine thousand dollars in credit card debt.
"But, Hector, sweetie, it's so beautiful--" She heard the line go dead and tears filled her eyes.
The salesman sat looking at her from across the desk. He nodded thoughtfully as he handed her a tissue and leaned back in his chair, his eyes skillfully appraising her. He was confident she wouldn't notice him gazing at her breasts. After all, he'd been selling cars for years; he was a professional.
