When a handsome young man, claiming to be three hundred years old, offers Cara a chance at a new life in his future utopian world she considers she has two options: back away cautiously or try to help the obviously deluded stranger.
Because it comes naturally to a teacher of autistic kids to help, Cara decides to take the second option. By doing so she unwittingly opens herself up to a passionate new love in an unimaginable new world, where clones extend lifespans and time travel is used to repopulate a decimated human population.
To Jac, Cara appears to be the ideal target for Retrieval: a worthy, productive human being. But when her free-thinking individualism begins to clash with his peaceful, highly regulated world he has to rethink his priorities. How much is he willing to change to keep this loving, beautiful woman in his life? And, more importantly, is he prepared to break the rules that define their very existence to stay with her?
Nhys Glover is an Australian born award-winning author of over 75 romance novels. She is known for blending heart, heat, and a touch of the extraordinary in her stories. From time-traveling lovers to soul-deep polyamory connections, her work explores love in all its transformational forms. Now living in Durham County UK, Nhys draws on her background in teaching and spiritual inquiry for inspiration in her writing. As she sits at her desk, staring out at the windy moors, she often reflects on what it means to stay human in an increasingly digital world. It is, after all, the subject of her newest book, a non-fiction called Authenticity, as Taught by a Machine. But no matter the genre, Nhys is always chasing one thing: the truth at the heart of every story.
I bought the bundle books 1-3 (you save $$$) and it was well-worth the money ($1.30 at the time).
That being said, these books were hard to put down, the characters were well developed, the scenery well described, the feelings well sensed.
As per the author's website, the series contains 13 books. All the characters are in and out of these books. They all have their HEA ending, but it’s better to read them in order as the characters evolve.
They have the same outlines, without them being boring: Time-Travel/Sci-Fi: It happens during the years 2300’s, sometimes recalling the 22nd century when they lost everything, which made them survivors. Suspense: An exception always happens against their Rules and they cannot do otherwise than adapt, which they are not used to because no one ever went against those Rules before. Romance: Between the one in her/his own time and the one that travels through time. Sex Scenes: Not too many and instead of sexual satisfaction they are mostly to assuage the pain from the past, the guilt, the fears.
I took one star off because: 1. There is nothing in between completely different paragraphs in people, place, and time. You don’t realize it when you read until you don’t understand what you’re reading, two lines down; then you have to restart the paragraph. 2. The word “ubiquitous” is used too many times, sometimes a few paragraphs over (and over again). It always when the author describes the clothing they wear.
I will be upfront and honest, as usual, with you. I was approached via email, by an author I've never heard of, and asked if I would read one of her books and review it. I, of course, jumped on the opportunity! I know you are sitting there thinking, "Well!?! Tell us already!" Okay, okay, keep your knickers on.
I really enjoyed this book! Imagine if you are living your life like you always do when suddenly a stranger approaches you and offers you a choice of Door #1, your imminent D Day, or Door #2, a leap of faith and time into a new world, a New Atlantis, hundreds of years in the future. An opportunity to live hundreds of years longer in genetic clones of a younger, healthier, you. I would take Door #2.
I do not want to get too much into Cara and Jac as theirs is a love story that I want you to experience. Their story is introduced here in Nine Lives and I cannot wait to see the where and the how their story blooms.
If you are looking for a good, sweet, quick (164 pages) read, I can absolutely recommend Nhys Glovers Nine Lives, A New Atlantian Series
I thought the premise of this book was really interesting. I love this take on time-travel and the future. It's really interesting. I just wish there was more going on in the book. Their either getting naked or their just talking. I thought it needed a lot more action to make it a really great book. I did enjoy the characters for the most part. I don't usually read books about middle aged women so I thought that was interesting for me. I also thought they fell for each other just a bit too fast to be believable. Also, more characters. It would have been nice to meet some other people in either world.
