Ghost & Me

Witty rom-com with a touch of magic

Anxious accountant, Ethan Hart doesn’t need a magic eight ball to know romance is doomed. His mini-break country weekend is already off to a bad start when he’s dumped before he boards the train. And at reception, two guests have died before he’s checked in and now his room has a ghost.

But Ethan is ready to tackle life's challenges - as long as they don't involve heights... or dead people... or discovering a drunken wish killed his soulmate.

Relying on advice from a kooky band of pensioners, the priest, a local psychic and with a trusty vacuum cleaner for protection, Ethan embarks on a quest to make things right and send love into the afterlife. But love is hard to banish, especially when it haunts you.

With snappy banter, quirky characters, and supernatural tension, this ghostly rom-com will have your rooting for love after life.

3.5 stars.

I finished this book, but I am still not really sure what it is I read. It's at a breakneck pace, almost like a stream of consciousness at times, and I got lost more than once and had to go back and see what I missed. I am sure the writer is aiming for humour, and perhaps it just passed me by but I was more bewildered than anything while reading. There seemed to be so many quick changes, that I just couldn't keep up. I wanted to love it, it's quirky and I did find it amusing, if totally unbelievable - especially that anyone would believe a 21 year old man they never met before was the love of a elderly ladies' life. I was lost, more times than I want to admit.

I did like the connection between Ghost and Ethan - when it was allowed time to develop - and really would have liked that given more time. It seems the author tried to pack in so much in a little space that it just didn't quite work for me. There are laugh out loud parts, and some lovely moments too but all in all just not enough to lift this above 3.5 for me.

I received an ARC and this is my honest review.

Ghost And Me is a romantic comedy which delivers a fast-paced tale of lost love, and psychic predictions between a bank accountant and a rock star.

Ethan Hart is dumped by his boyfriend after he exchanges back stage passes to a rock concert for a romantic country break. Drowning his sorrows, he awakens alone on the train to the romantic countryside destination.

The rural setting frightens this city boy with every squeak and squawk. When he arrives at the inn, he finds that it is the venue for a wake. A comedy of errors ensues, with Ethan’s lodgings being reassigned; the only room left belongs to the owner’s grandson. Its location at the top of the stairs is terrifying for Ethan, and it is almost as troubling as the restless spirit in the room that disapproves of Ethan’s presence.

This speedy romp had plenty to make me smile; Ethan grew on me as the story began to unfold and by the end I was eager for him to succeed with finding his true love. I was a little surprised when I later re-read the book description to see that this story was mainly set in Scotland; I’m afraid that detail passed me by, but it didn’t particularly matter as this was very much a character-lead novel.

So when I read the blurb and a bit of the sample I was intrigued. Then I started reading it and didn’t know what to think. Is it weird? Is it just me not understanding what’s going on? Is it the British humour? I think it may have been a bit of all of the above but I was very invested to find out what happened to Ghost and Ethan. Some of it still went a bit over my head but that might be the British aspect or maybe it’s just my brain. Oh who am I kidding? It’s me.

I can say that I very much enjoyed the book and would absolutely love to see this as a movie. I would be rolling on the floor laughing because seeing some of the funny parts would just be hilarious. But I’d also be crying at the sad part… Still though… it would be worth it.

Highly recommend if you’re in the mood for a good ol’ wholesome “ghost” story.

I wish, so much, that I could give this book more than five stars, many, many more. It is absolutely spectacular! I was actually laughing out loud while reading it. It is definitely one of the best books I’ve read in a while. This author created something that is amazing and I say, “Well done”! This book made me laugh and it made me hope. The ending…Perfect in every way.

Accountant Ethan is a city boy with a dirty mind and anxiety. Upon being dumped, he makes a wish in a magic fountain that starts a chain reaction, beginning with Ethan on a train, centers around little old ladies and a ghost – then ends up with a series of experiences that change him. And it’s all because Lucy Jewels needs help.
Ghost & Me is one of those tales I was on the fence about for part of the story. It is a comedy of errors, misinterpretations, misunderstandings, and threads of conversations born of bad hearing that take on their own life. It’s a ride that can leave a reader confused and entertained. Hence, some will find it brilliant, others a nightmare. And for much of the time, I’m honestly not sure which side of the fence I belonged to. I appreciate the work involved, and I loved many of the Britishisms that the old ladies used that reminded me of my nan. But, the story occasionally had me tied in knots that I wasn’t sure which way was up. Like I said, brilliance or madness – I’m not sure which. Eventually, some of the insanity is less so, and an emotionally beautiful and somewhat snarky story inserts itself, although order never truly evolves.
The tale is told in the first person, present tense, from the viewpoint of Ethan. Technically, a few lessons about using autonomous body parts need to be learned. I understand their use – especially in the first person, but some things are still a no-no. Worldbuilding left some hilarious imagery of a city boy’s first experiences in the countryside, including interactions with horses, cows, and other wildlife. Also, a fear of stairs and a vacuum is involved, but that’s another line belonging to Ethan and the old ladies, alongside trading insults with a ghost.
Amid all the confusion, Ethan is a loveable character I found myself rooting for – especially in the face of his tool of an ex. The story is a tossed salad of bits and bobs where the whole thing makes sense, but the ingredients are eclectic. When Lucy Jewels appeared, I felt for the guy, and his journey made all the confusion worth the wait.
So, if you’re confused by my review – yeeaahhh, call it an insight into the story.

This is a new to me author and while I enjoyed this story it was fast paced and the writing style had me going back to check what I’d read a few times there was plenty of humour in the story and the characters were good and was happy with the ending for Ethan. Some people will like the writing style others won’t, but it was an enjoyable story just took a little extra brain power to understand it.

This is a new author for me and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was very fast paced and hard to keep track of in places but the brilliant characters, their dynamic, humour and a storyline that will hook you in to find out if they get their hea makes it definitely worth a read.

I bought this book as a thank you to the author who played on my writing prompt of the week.
It didn't really work for me, so I set it aside to perhaps get back to it later.
Not because the book is bad! It isn't.
It's just that my mood is, at present, a bit off to properly appreciate the writing style and humour. So I have shelved it for later.

I'm rounding this up from 3.5. This is a fast paced romantic comedy. I enjoyed the overall story. There were just a few things in the story that didn't work well for me.
