Argh...
I seem to have been plagued by bad book suggestions on Amazon.
I was drawn to this book because the cover looked somewhat fallen-esque, And i really loved reading those.

Unfortunately, this book was a cheap Twilight knock off with characters that contained no depth.
It had Nora, our protagonist, mooning over a perfect and flawless jock she used to be friends with, until he and his buddies tried to rape her, against the school lockers, in broad daylight, our book hero Hunter swoops in, kicks ass, saves the day and not one teacher, or pupil hears the noises of a 5 on 1 fight. Which is ridiculous.
So after he showed his super human abilities in protecting the helpless heroin from rapists (sounding familiar here?) he then disappears for 3 days (yeah..I'm serious, just like Twilight) There are 'animal attacks' and bodies found drained of blood, Hunters eyes are described as 'golden/red' (are you freakin serious?!) and here's a unique one...he can read minds (at this point I almost had a kindle shaped hole through my window..but I refuse to sacrifice my baby because of this...'book') because i'm essentially throwing money out of the window, every time I pay for one of these terrible books

description

So after what...2 or 3 extraordinarily brief encounters, Hunter bares his soul and show's Nora his mind reading abilities, and they're acting like bff's

I think I'm going to finish this book, purely because it will take me another ten minutes, but I'm only 25% in and all ready had enough rant worthy material I had to log on and start my review early...edit's coming soon upon finishing...

**Update**
NOPE...god this is so painful to finish...it's like the author had some decent ideas, but sped through, couldn't be arsed explaining them, so she gave her characters a crap ton of metaphors instead..I'm determined to finish this if it kills me. I hate having books in the did-not-finish.

God that was awful...I need some oreos..and a big ass jar of nutella..and maybe a read through the bell jar to remind me decent literature did once exist.

Story & Writing: The story was amazing! It reminded me a bit of Twilight and Vampire Diaries but the Vassiz legend did give an individuality to it. It is hard to be original among so many vampire stories but this was a good attempt and I enjoyed reading it. It had action and suspense and a bit of romance and the writing was nice and easy to read.

There were some unrealistic things,

Despite these things though, the story is still interesting. And these things can be easily overlooked.

Characters: The characters in this book weren't that bad but they weren't one of those memorable, life-changing characters either, whom you feel a connection with. Nora was nice, yes, but she wasn't a Katniss or Hermoine. She was OK and I did like her but I didn't see any depth in her.

Hunter was the same. He was an OK character and even though he should have been interesting, he didn't arouse my curiosity. But I'm not sure if this was my fault, that it was only me who couldn't connect with the characters, or if the characters were like that. Maybe some other reader out there night be able to connect with the characters...

There weren't many side characters, and the ones who did appear, appeared only for a little while so nothing much can be said about them. Rafael seemed like an interesting character so I hope to see more of him in the next books.

Overall: Forsaken was a really good book. More driven by the story than the characters, but good nonetheless. And I'm very eager to know what happens next!

Forsaken (The Forsaken Saga, #1) by Sophia Sharp is an interesting take on the origins of an ancient society, and perhaps, even the beginning of the universe (which isn't clear until later in the series). This book focuses on Nora, a typical high school student in the Pacific Northwest who is frequently caught by teachers daydreaming. Frustrated by Nora's inattentiveness, one of her teachers assigns Nora the task of tutoring a tall, dark, and handsome new student, Hunter, in Math after school.

As Nora gets to know Hunter (especially after he saves her from an inevitable rape at the hands of Nora's childhood crush), Hunter shares with her that he is from an ancient race known as the Vassiz who can walk in the dreamworld. It's after he takes her to the dreamworld that Nora's life goes to "hell in a hand-basket". The rest of the book is pretty much Nora and Hunter on the run from the Vassiz who are tracking them down to essentially kill them. They escape capture with the assistance of the reclusive Raphael whom they befriend and who lives beneath the ground in an intricate system of tunnels and caves.

While comparisons to the Twilight series and the Vampire Diaries are inevitable, I think the Vassiz legend is unique in itself and is actually more similar to the Carpathians in Christine Feehan's "Dark" novels. Plus, I continually fell asleep reading the Twilight series because they were so repetitive with no real plot line. In comparison, I couldn't wait to start the next book in the Forsaken saga immediately after completing one book, and all stories are an interconnected fight of good versus evil, which comes to a glorious conclusion - with no loose ends - at the end of the series in Foretold.

I listened to the Audible version of this story narrated by Pam Lorence. She had great intonation and pace, including differing voices for male and female characters as appropriate, as well as teenagers and more mature adults. Her narration certainly contributed to my enjoyment of this book and the entire series.

In short, this is a great beginning to this wondrous fantasy/romance quartet!

awful. I wanted to give up after the first couple of chapters. A girl alone in a hallway in high school gets surrounded by a bunch of guys that are grabbing her. A guy stands up for her gets her out that awful situation and essentially save her. What does she do? She gets mad at her savior punches him and then low and behold doesn't tell anyone what happens to her. Why? Books are role model for young girls so why In the hell are there main characters that don't stand up for themselves especially in unwanted sexual encounters. Beyond that the characters were dry and naive.

I knew early on this book was not for me. I thought I'd give it a go and hope things got better bet in fact they got worse. By worse I mean lamer and lamer. So unrealistic (and I refer to normal situations like highschool not the vampirism) and the characters were both horribly disappointing crybabies. I originally started this as I had the bundle but one was enough for me!

I hate this book!

Not my kinda book but maybe some people will like it, I just don't get how this book work.

The main event in this book "The romance" is incomplete! I don't really see them together I feel like there are to many plot holes and I can't just each one of those.

H disapproved!

I wasn’t sure where this book was going because it started right away with a nora meeting a new boy in school Hunter. He shows her an ability and then another, sharing a dream is bad and they are on the run. What hunter has done is against the rules and Nora learns he’s not just a boy with a gift. They have no time for anything other than to run and leave everything behind while they are hunted down. I am loving the book, very creative I can picture everything that’s happening perfectly. Great writing ✍️ I can’t wait for the next book. Also I would like to add that I read a lot of negative reviews in this. Not sure why someone is even comparing this to Twilight seriously. So not the same book characters have NOTHING in common. It’s a different kind of story the ONLY thing I can say is that there is another series that this same author wrote after this one book is called shattered. Sounds EXACTLY the same, same premise same characters with different names so I thought that I was weird BUT I have not gone into the next book yet of this series but I’m enjoying it. Not sure I will read the shattered series since what’s the point if they’re the same but I may check it out not sure yet

This book is so bad. Within 10 min I realized it was a watered down version of twilight. The main character is vapid and the dialog is brain numbing. This is such a bad book even my 11 year old thought the book was lacking. You should know my 11 year old is not a lover of books and rarely comments on the worthiness/worthlessness of books - he had a lot of complaints with this book... that is how awful it is.

The girl literally gives up her life for a guy (vampire) she has known for like 2 weeks? One she doesn’t really know at all... she doesn’t even know if he likes her or loves her or whatever. She almost gets raped by a guy’s she had a crush on... Hunter saves her and she gets mad and punches him. She completely forgets about her family and her dog that the author felt was important enough to introduce. She just goes along with whatever he says. There is a mysterious dress... then he is shirtless for the rest of the book. He literally gives zero information about himself - other than he can read minds and if he holds hands with someone they can hear it too and they can go in dreams. They get hunted in a maze and an older vampire helps them, the guy only speaks in like riddles or something - you have to listen to what he is not saying to know what he is saying. Well, now you don’t have to read the book... because that was it. The. Whole. Thing.

- sadly I got all 4 books and therefore have to finish the series... *sobs uncontrollably*

The author said she wrote this during her first year of college, so bearing that in mind I'm going to be gentle in this review. Not everyone has an innate skill for developing a story. Some things do need to be taught. For example, even after I earned my BA in Literature, my writing skills were amateur at best. While earning my MA in creative writing, those skills were honed and now I notice little things where other writers falter.
That being said, this book is amateur. I read the whole thing because it held my interest. But, the characters are underdeveloped and the plot moves too quickly, so the decision Nora makes at the end is not believable at all. She barely knows this guy but she's willing to make a permanent decision that will change her life? She's willing to give everything up for him?! I don't buy it.
The micro-details are okay; technically speaking the writing itself is solid enough and though there were some similes/metaphors that felt forced, I don't have many complaints insofar as writing. The story development, however, needs some work and that kind of skill comes with practice and knowledge. I am going to finish the series because I want to know what happens and I want to see if Sharp's skills improve. I'm not impressed, but I'm interested and sometimes that's all it takes. We'll see, Sophia Sharp...

A pretty good read

A pretty good read

I stumbled across this series in my search for something that looked interesting, but was also inexpensive. The summary sparked my interest and the reviews were good, so I decided to just go ahead and get it. I regret nothing. The first half of the book was slow and I couldn't really get into it. It started out as any typical supernatural/romance story. Someone moves to town, the girl notices the guy, something mythical happens, blah blah blah. Expecting this to be predictable and dull, I almost gave up. I'm so glad I didn't! While some parts were more interesting than others, I really liked where everything was going. The concept is one of the things that really willed me to keep going. I'd say this is a pretty good read, and I have to say, I can't wait to read the next one.

I have the box set for this series and have just started reading the first book so I will edit this review as I go. I just needed to start by saying except for maybe the first chapter this feels like it should be the second half of the first book not the very beginning. Other than knowing Nora is ordinary and Hunter is not, there is literally no character development. They know each other for a week and you get no sense of why Hunter has decided to trust Nora, or vice versa. Then when he says leave she says ok with no question or qualms relating to family, friends, or her own safety. I am going to continue reading with hopes that I will find some reason to love or hate these characters.

UPDATE
It did not get better. The characters did not develop any more. The bear was the best part of the whole "saga". The end was almost like the author got bored and just ended it.

Enthralling

What a great YA Read. I absolutely loved the story and the main Characters. Their journey together in this first installment has me wanting more. The love Young Nora Has For her New Friend Hunter (may be more than friends) so early on is exciting and sweet. Loss and Sorrow mixed with excitement and euphoria. Recommended!

there are very few books I've read that were worse than this one.

this entire first book reads more like an outline for a plot, with random sentences full of writing vomit, where lots of adjectives are used to describe the wind or something, but have absolutely no baring on the storyline, character development or world building.

do NOT waste your time.

I got this in audiobook. I can't tell you if i liked the story since the person narrating read so darned slow it made me crazy to listen to. I sped it up, but then they talk real high and lose all inflection on words. Narration should be at normal talking speed NOT so stinkin slow!

I like paranormal books.... but this book was just not quite doing it for me.
It started off similar to Twilight almost, then author did change things up by the middle of the book. But the changes were just awkward for me.
The dream world thing was just meh. The inability of Hunter to ever accurately calculate their persuers and then his surprise every time they caught up to them, was irritating and less than confident-hottie material. The ancient sanctuary part could have been awesome.
There were interesting bits but then alot of unanswered questions ensued. The interaction with Rafael was quirky. And to top it all off, it bothered me that Nora, the human, acted unrealistically, which made her unrelateable to me. And in spite of 4 days on the run together, he only ever kissed her forehead and told her she was beautiful once. There was ZERO romance and chemistry there.
Then unfortunately the ending seemed hastily pieced together.... very anti-climactic in the rapid [SPOLIER ALERT] conversion of Nora into a Vassiz (vampire).

Running for your life

I really enjoyed this book, from the very beginning. I was sucked in for a second time. I would highly recommend this book and series to anyone. I don't tell what is in the books I read. That is for you to find out. I'm off to the next book in this series. Hope to read that you loved it to. Thank you Sophia Sharp for writing such a great read. I would have been happy to stay after school to help.

Forsaken mirrors a familiar formula: small-town girl, mysterious new student, ancient secrets. While it doesn’t break new ground in paranormal YA, Nora’s curiosity and the unfolding mystery keep things engaging. The writing is fast-paced, and the setup promises a world of supernatural stakes. While not wildly original, it's a light and enjoyable start for fans of school-set fantasy with a romantic undercurrent.

Nora and Hunter

I wasn’t able to get very far into listening to the audio version because the narrator voicing Nora as a dense 12 yo was killing me. Then I tried to read it and it still came off as Nora being too young. I had to quit when Hunter kept on repeating his explanation of the dream plane/world.

Whiplash

Ugh. I had such high hopes from the preview, I enjoy paranormal fiction. But this was so fast and underdeveloped. The relationship and the unbelievable choices are based on nothing really. I'm so torn about reading the next book to see if sharp finds her pacing and develops things better, and writing it off as a waste of a few hours.

I liked this story it was ok. It just felt a bit rushed and over he top for em and most the times in was like yeah right, it pushed the boundaries of realism for me which I'm usually really good at letting them go and barely noticing them as its a work of fiction not reality so I usually don't really mind if things are a bit far fetched but this went overboard in most cases, the characters were ok but lacked a bit and didn't really contain any depth, but Nora was strong willed at times and showed some character and potential and hunter was a great romantic partner for Nora and I liked them together it just felt a bit forced even for me and too fast. It was a cool concept though and I haven't read a vampire book in a while so I enjoyed getting back into it and it was a really quick read and I flew through it mainly because it was so fast paced and action filled which at times I didn't like cause I felt like everything was moving to quickly with no real reason, which worked for the most part to keep me entertained. But I just didn't really care about any of the characters or what happened to them.
