Flying Out of this World

Flights of fancy and fear, ecstatic highs, dreadful falls, and beckoning these are the images British filmmaker Peter Greenaway collects and dissects in Flying out of This World, the second volume in a series developed by the Louvre and devoted to innovative writing on the visual arts.

As guest curator, Greenaway selected from the Louvre's collection of European prints and drawings ninety-one masterpieces that illustrate the human longing for flight. Greenaway's text, a compilation of brief commentaries that combine description, allusion, and interpretation, illuminate the images as depictions of flight desired and denied. Including works by Redon, Goya, Brueghel, Michelangelo, Mantegna, Rubens, Poussin, and Delacroix, this volume offers a combination of literary and visual art, of sight and insight.

A pursuit through the Bible, classical mythology, cosmology, theology, etymology, ornithology, and meteorology, Flying out of This World is not just an illustrated history of imagined flight, but a meditation on its meaning as a metaphor for the human condition, caught between a weighty body and a soaring spirit.

Staccando l'ombra da terra

Libro molto interessante, che riporta le schede preparate dal grande regista inglese per una esposizione al Louvre di disegni, schizzi preparatori ed altre opere grafiche.
Greenaway idea un percorso dedicato all'idea del volo ed alla sua rappresentazione nelle opere artistiche, partendo dalla sfera di Odilon Redon e ritornando ad un'altra sfera dello stesso artista, chiudendo così il percorso circolare di staticità, prima elevazione, distacco dal suolo, ascesa verticale, caduta rovinosa e stasi dolorosa.
Data la sensibilità barocca dell'autore ci sono molte opere del '500 - '600 italiano di autori come Primaticcio, Baciccia, Zuccari ma anche disegni di Poussin, Coypel, Goya, Rubens. Le interpretazioni di Greenaway sono sempre stimolanti e capaci di suggerire intuizioni e movimenti (quali tipicamente un regista può ideare), rendendo il viaggio stimolante e arricchente, specie per chi non avesse un grande conoscenza di opere grafiche.
Peccato solo per le illustrazioni delle opere che, ridotte ad un bianco e nero di dimensioni ridotte, a volte sono davvero difficili da elaborare, rendendo spesso necessario ricorrere ad immagini dalla rete.
