Teresa Carpenter believes in the power of unconditional love, and that there’s no better place to find it than between the pages of a romance novel. Reading is a passion for Teresa—a passion that led to a calling. She began writing more than twenty years ago, and marks the sale of her first book as one of her happiest memories. A fifth-generation Californian, Teresa lives in San Diego, within miles of her extensive family, and knows that with their help she can accomplish anything.
Michelle Ross is back in town to sell the house of her father, who was never around in her childhood as a cop. But what she finds is the sheriff of River Run, Nate, roaming around her daddy's house as if it's his.
It turns out that he paid the rent for four more months and is legally allowed to live there for that period of time. Michelle is irritated by his smart-ass attitude, and on top of it, she discovers a wailing baby left on their doorstep by Nate's cousin. But before she can help it, she's head-over-heels for the baby...and Nate too.
I liked this book but there were a few issues I had. First of all, the characters weren't very authentic--I could tell the author was trying to make their dialogue snappy and genuine, but it wasn't working for me. Also, Nate called Michelle "insane" and "crazy" more times than I can count on one hand.
Another unrealistic thing I noticed between the characters was their immediate, mutual acceptance of Jack, the baby. They didn't even talk about it, they just said, "Okay." I don't believe anyone in the real world would do that.
On the other hand, I did like how the romance was sweet and developed slowly. Whirlwind romances without any plot are no fun, but this one was the exact opposite.
Whoever says dreams and fairy tales can’t come true hasn’t read this enchanting story about a man and woman at odds with reality. Wishes and hopes certainly can become fact in real life but not in the fanciful way of fantasy books. In, The Sheriff’s Doorstep Baby the problems Michelle and Nate face are relatable, seemingly unfixable and diametrically opposed to their goals in life. But throw in a snow storm, an adorable baby and time to get to know each other and a reader is treated with a delightful relationship coming to fruition. It’s the journey getting to the happily ever after that makes this book a pleasure to read.
The heroine, Michelle, is looking for acceptance. She’s starts off wearing blinders and is hyper-focused on her goals, her life and hiding from facing anything that might hint at an alternate course. She’s hurt, she’s justified and she’d determined to do things her own way, alone and in control. She sounds confused doesn’t she? How can someone who wants acceptance at the same time steadfastly remain determined to do things on her own and view everything else as suspect? Someone who has a lot of hurt to work through. All she needs is to be somehow forced to slow down, to notice and experience life beyond the world that’s trapped in her mind with its skewed perceptions. Enter the innocuous intention to sell a house. Nature takes it from there.
Nate is a man’s man. He’s a character with integrity, honor and the capacity to love a mile wide. He’s strong and stern but he’s got a temper that seems to be triggered by Michelle. Readers figure out early on that it’s a symptom of passion brewing. She’s all wrong for him but there are moments that that fact doesn’t seem to matter and those are the moments to look for. Truly entertaining and meaningful, they propel the attraction towards combustible. Nate is described as a handsome man, but for me, it was his actions towards baby Jack that made him the most alluring and desirable character and cemented his status as hero. I enjoyed his personality and his dialogue.
Dialogue is a strong element in this story, whether it be between the main protagonists or their own private internal debates. Their interaction provided momentum to the conflicts that plague their growing relationship. Even when at times it seems begrudging in nature, they can’t seem to resist each other and they each help the other realize what is truly important in their lives. The heroine comes across as a bit too stubborn and mulish at times and that irked a bit. Obviously that means Michelle has the most growing and changing to do but Nate has to show her the art of compromise. The Sheriff’s Doorstep Baby was written in such a way that it would make an endearing Hallmark Movie to watch on T.V. – with the delightfully sensual and spicy physical capitulation obviously heavily edited for television audiences. Thank goodness readers get the full enjoyable effect.
The writing brings to life a lot of heart, emotion and feelings that make this contemporary romance shine and readers should find what they’re looking for when they want a quality romance. The Sheriff’s Doorstep Baby delivers a solid story and thoroughly entertains. It even has a wonderful warm and fuzzy ending that made me smile. Pick up your own copy and see for yourself.
This book had me hooked and I could not put it down. I stayed up half the night to finish reading it. I always enjoy Teresa Carpenter books for their heart, romance, sweetness and slight angst.
Michelle Ross has returned back to her small home town after the death of her father. She has big dreams that require living in a metropolitan city and some cash. The only way for her dreams to come true is to sell her old house. But there is a hinderance in the form of a renter that stand in her way. He might even be the person who changes her opinion about many things.
Sheriff Nate Connor has some demons to deal with and is a no nonsense man who is not easily fooled. He is faithful and loyal and when baby Jack is found abandoned at the doorstep of the house, things change drastically for this wounded sheriff. He readily accepts the responsibility without any questions asked, which completely melts the readers' heart.
Loved the banter and quick wit of the characters, especially Michelle who tries to get a rise out of Nate at every turn. Their chemistry grew as they understood each other with time. They were both rather contradictory to what they presented. Michelle was all girly but then knew all about home repairs. While Nate could by quite hard and unyielding, yet so caring, considerate and compassionate towards Jack and Michelle.
The changes that occur within Nate and Michelle so that they realized their love for each other was deep, reciprocal and respectful. It was great to be a part of their journey and growth. The supporting characters played a limited role but it was adequate to add to the story. Loved the slow burn of the book and the interactions with the baby. Some sensitive issues of PTSD and drug usage were touched upon but not dealt with completely. The lyrics of the song were so touching, brought tears to my eyes. Love scenes were described poetically as well.
There are additional books to this series as Michelle has two additional friends, Emily and Amanda. I look forward to reading those books and other works by Teresa Carpenter. If you are looking for a romance with a slow burn, a little angst, lots of humour, word play and cute baby antics then you will whole heartedly enjoy this tale!
Kinda slow, but also kinda good. This story starts out with the sheriff of a small town arriving home and finding a woman asleep on his couch. She turns out to be the late home owners daughter who wants to sell the house but had no idea a Sheriff Nate had rented it. Then they find a baby on the doorstep. Michelle stays to help Nate take care of it. They end up falling in love, but she had planned only on passing through town on her way to bigger and better things in LA. She has to decide what's more important. Both characters had the requisite baggage holding them back, but they slowly worked their way into each other's hearts. Toss a baby in the mix and the love story is even sweeter.
I absolutely loved this story! The characters lingered in my mind days after I finished it. At first I was a little surprised by heroine Michelle's seemingly shallow personality and her overt sensuality. But then Nate sees through the act, letting the reader know she's just trying to protect herself. I enjoyed seeing their sometimes intense, sometimes tender relationship grow and morph into love. I will def be reading this again!
