Here is an excellent resource full of practical information on teaching reading to students who are not native English speakers. Written for teachers who are working with students from diverse backgrounds and with a broad range of experiences, this comprehensive text includes background information on reading, ESL instruction, and ESL learners, as well as specific strategies that have proven effective with this student population.
Overall, an excellent introduction to English Language learners and what teachers can do for them. I have gained several great ideas and resources for my students (from 1st grade to adults)! Most of the material at the beginning is a bit dated and some selections are a tad dry, hence the four star rating. This is my second time reading this text -- I wish I had actually read it the first time instead of skimming it simply for a college class. The latter sections are very helpful.
