Covers everything from the first lesson to how to fill out your Schedule C. If you have been teaching a while, you will probably have already figured much of this out, but still valuable to experienced teachers for repertoire lists and Sol-fa worksheets as well as other nuggets of wisdom.

This was an excellent first book for a voice teacher. I've been teaching off and on for about 9 years (wow, has it really been that long?), and she has lots of great info. One of the things I loved is that although she is *very* well-known for her compilations and anthologies (has anyone *not* sung from her books?), she teaches in a small town in PA and teaches the same populations that the rest of us do. She talks about how in smaller towns she can't charge as much money as the larger metro areas, but she likes where she is, so takes the trade-off.

I would suggest this book for any beginning voice teacher and it should be required reading for all ped majors. It gave me bunches of new ideas and ways to do things.

Some concepts in this book are a little outdated, but otherwise this book was so helpful and challenging!

Some of the quotes I highlighted:
“As a teacher you will learn from every student you teach…You learn more about teaching from each and every unique person you accept as a student in your studio.”

“As teachers, we need a number of ways to communicate the same concept.”

“To be really effective, you must actively choose to teach. Your attitudes and personality will be reflected in your style of teaching as well as your accomplishments.”

“The most important lesson for any teacher is still the most obvious one: always remain a student yourself.”

Extremely helpful resource for voice teaching. I will definitely refer back to it over the course of my career. A must have for anyone who teaches studio lessons.
